After reading the reviews, I know why this place has poor ratings. We got there on Saturday at 5pm. Bad time to show up. Kids eat free on the weekends. So there are screaming kids everywhere. Dirty tables that need bussing. And 6 employees standing around doing NOTHING. Oh wait. One was playing with her hair, two were checking messages on their cell phones, one was standing there drinking an energy drink, and the rest were standing there doing nothing but ignoring us. When we flagged down a manager, his excuse was, it was shift change. Regardless, to have employees all standing around ignoring customers, does not make a good first impression. Our food took a long time to get. Their only saving factor was the food wasn't too bad. My steak burger was good, but my husband said that his chicken tenders were greasy. We decided to give this place one more try. Unfortunately, the service was slow (45 min wait after ordering), the salad was old and the 4 pieces of chicken on top were as hard as a rock. The large serving of onion rings covered only half a small plate. The hamburger was dry. No more chances. Stick with the milkshakes! read more

It's hard to rate a budget chain 4 stars, but I prefer this location to all others in Lakeland. The food gets out quick, the place is clean and have always experienced good service. This is the slowest, most unfriendly, most inconsistent restaurant I've been to in a long time. No one ahead of me, no one in the drive thru and it took me 20 minutes to get a milkshake. You don't have to worry about me coming back or recommending this establishment ever again. 1/2 price shakes aren't worth it if they give you anxiety and heartburn. It's horrible! read more

Busy place. Popular. But hey it's the second oldest chain restaurant, Steak n Shake. (Guess who is #1?). I enjoy Steak n Shake's as my favorite restaurant of all time since 1969 in another Florida city, Daytona Beach. I can be harsh on those sub par places. This one in Lakeland is safe. The waitress was the excellent. The manager made his rounds to see how things were. The food took longer to get to us than we'd prefer but the place was busy. The food was predictably good. Chili dishes for us. Perfect. The traditional hand-spun milkshakes finish off a nice meal. And its not expensive. Good job Lakeland. read more

Consistently poor quality. I love S&S and eat there often. However, for some reason this one is lacking in something. Always old fries and cold burgers. Even the shakes taste weird. I went through the drive thru planning to get two separate orders, one for each of the coupons I carried with me. I hadn't been to Steak n Shake for a while, so I asked if two separate orders was okay. The lady who was taking my order was exasperated and acted like it was a big deal. As a customer, I wasn't sure what to expect next, so I went ahead and ordered. There was a small miscommunication about sides, as the only side I saw was chili or sides that had chili in them, such as the chili mac. I was told that for my one side (on the first order), chili already comes with the burger meal, and that I could get an additional side. Well, okay. She gave me my total for the first and we went onto the next order. After that, I pulled forward and I asked about the sides since chili doesn't already come with it. She told me that chili doesn't already come with the burger and that she put it on as the additional side. So I asked about what kind of sides they had. She huffed "Oh my god" under her breath and proceeded to take someone else's order in the midst of our conversation. Afterwards, she told me about the different sides they have. I told her I was confused, thank you for clearing that up, but I couldn't help but think "What a poor attitude". She smiled at me on the way out, but I wasn't sure what to think about that. Three stars for the meal (and the fact I could use both coupons), but two stars taken off for the poor attitude towards the situation. read more

This location is def the worst Steak N Shake ever!!! In the 5 years that we have lived here- we have only eaten here 3 times and the food and service was horrible. The other 3 times we walked out due to waiting to be seated for 20-30 minutes or more and the place was not even busy. The waitresses here are very rude, slow, and do not care at all. There is no urgency is seating people or cleaning the tables at all. The place is filthy and the manger does not care. If he did- the place would be better by now. Who lets a restaurant stay this way for this many years?? If it was worth going to- I would go at least once a week - but sadly it is not. Do not waste your time or money here :( read more

We called them and asked why no one was taking drive thru orders and they said they were too busy. 10 cars in the parking lot...I hate to see what it's like when they are actually busy. The drive thru is pointless. They are always "busy inside" or some other excuse as to why it takes 10 minutes for them just to take my order. I usually go on off-peak hours, so I understand why the staff is smaller, but please explain to me why they have 1 employee in the kitchen and taking orders all by himself?? Since moving to florida, 10/14, my wife and I have gone a few times to this sit down fast food restaurant. This so far has been the cleanest and safest feeling one of the bunch. A couple of issues with ALL of them is the seating, we walked in and were the only ones in the to be seated line...we could see four empty clean booths and we were told it would be ten minutes!!...what the???...are you kidding me? Finally after 5 or 6 minutes we were seated. We ordered and it took about 10 minutes for the order to come which was a cup of chili, that was 99% beans and tasted exactly like hormel out of the can, some (about 8) very SOGGY, greasy onion rings that you're charged extra for over the shoe string fries, but the two burgers were good, not great just good and a bit overcooked. While eating we asked for additional napkins and soda refill, we thought they went to publix for the two items and noticed the waitresses eating and drinking while we waited...another what the ???. So I guess in the long run you get what you pay for...the waitress was polite, courteous and professional. read more

Very poor service, we order our food and sat for about 45 minutes, grumpy waitress, our food was sitting at the window for about 5 minutes getting colder and colder while all the personal on the floor was roaming around minding their own bussines. The food was so cold and mushy chicken tenders, cold fries, never got our shakes, no napkins except the one wrapping the utensils. Tried to call a waitress to get ranch sauce for the tenders to be ignored completely. Talked to the manager, he took part of our food and returned later with even colder fries and burger, caused our children to get stomach sick. We left the cold fries on the table. When paying for our bill, the cashier who was the very same person who took our food back to be reheated, slammed the money drawer so hard that it shooked the counter, the sad part about it is that he did it in front of other customers that were aproaching the desk. we felt that we commited a crime, trust me is not a good feeling when you are trying to have a peaceful evening with your family eating out and enjoying the evening. read more
