They ruined the experience by getting rid of hosts/hostesses - waiters/waitresses and have also shrunk the menu considereably. The kiosk model is impersonal and I feel like things like this are making the USA head the direction of Japan where more and more preople are becoming reclusive and antisocial at an alarming rate. It seems the only time the antisiocial people are the opposite are when it's time to get paid to protest....(Great stuff we've got going on thanks to the direction that the western world was COERCED) The whole idea of 24 hours became obsolete at most locations even though that post 3 a.m. crowd was a huge chunk of their business and for my firends and I, it was literally a Fri and Saturday tradition in my area for us to hit the Steak N Shake when we left the bar and it was usually a group of 10-12 of us, and on many occosions, many more. The waiter/waitress never left without, at least, a hundred bucks in tips on top of bill that began at 100 dollars. So, Good Job Steak N Shake. I think I will be acquiring a SBL or FSBG and opening a competitor soon that actuall remembers that the customers' wants and needs come before corporate's. Honestly some of the nicest employees, but that's the only thing keeping it from a single star. The atmosphere was nice with a 50's theme. I thought the burger was going to be great but we were told as we walked in that they were out of cheese and I thought okay that's fine. Every single burger was with cheese so there wasn't a cheaper option for not having cheese. The wait was long and finally they called my friends name. They handed him a bag but forgot his milk shake so he let them know. They were again very polite and apologetic about everything and went back to make his shake. They came back out in about 5 minutes with his shake but my food had not arrived yet. Then they came out with my food, which was a bag that only had a burger and chili. I let them know they forgot my fries and milk shake but again very nice people! Finally after about 20 minutes from ordering we had all of our food and were ready to eat. 2/10 Fries- were definitely refried from a previous order and had zero salt. 0/10 chili- tasted like dish water and was very runny with no seasoning at all 2/10 burger- one super flat patty almost non existent. The whole burger I could only taste the mound of overly fried onions. The 2 was for the very decent roll that was used on the butter steak burger. Again no seasoning on the burger at all when I tasted the patty alone. 8/10 Reese's chocolate shake- the shake was the last thing I tasted and what a save for the entirely meal! Horrible service, we had four people and two of us were vegetarians there was no option to remove the meat on a sandwich (you had to order on a kiosk on this location) my parents were older so it was really hard for them and when the food came. My mom didn't have cheese on her burger they forgot multiple basic items on my dads burger like lettuce, cheese and tomato! My husband ordered a shake and it was a plain chocolate shake and it was disgusting. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day sense we were traveling but sheesh. The worst experience in any restaurant I've ever been to. We were a party of 8...and were seated. The waitress gave us our menu's and then we waited 20 minutes...she never came back to check on us or even take our drink order. The restuarant wasn't busy and there were two other waitresses working...she even looked over at our table a few times and then walked away. Look, I hate to beat a dead horse, but this place is literally the worst. Unfortunately it's only one of the few sit down restaurants in the town and we continue to give it chance after chance. The verdict is clear, it's terrible. If you haven't budgeted at least an hour and a half to eat, you should slip out and go elsewhere, they probably won't notice anyway. This last time I had to wait by the register easily ten minutes without any reaction, finally I had to flag someone down and ask them to please find someone who could check us out because we HAD to leave. The wait staff was nice, but their interest in actually walking the floor is very low, you will probably see them 4 times or less during a visit. This is exponentially unfortunate because every time we go there, guests from out of town who are visiting because of an event or who have come in from I-70 are always at this particular restaurant and it makes a terrible ambassador for our city. This is a shame because it has an excellent opportunity to make a great impression to guests that visit New Castle. I have literally never been in there when there wasn't someone from out of town disgruntled at the restaurant because of slow and/or poor service. I really wish corporate at Steak and Shake would take notice of this particular outlet and take them to task to clean up their act. I gave one star only to leave a comment. We were traveling and stopped at the location in New Castle, IN. We waited 45 minutes before we finally got our food in the drive thru. Multiple customers before us and after us were angry at the wait time. As you can probably guess, our food was ice cold. However, the worst part was the condition of our burgers when we opened them. We checked our bag before leaving and discovered we were short a burger so we waited 12 more minutes to get the order right. Then we pulled off so the people behind us could get their orders. As we got back on the highway, my husband pulled the food out and one of the burgers was swimming in mustard and got everywhere. This was intentional and inexcusable. We paid nearly $30.00 for our order and the employee was sarcastic and unapologetic about everyone's wait time only excusing it by telling us that they can't keep anyone so they're always working short. We love Steak and Shake but do not recommend this location. Shame on them for treating customers that way. Total waste of money! read more

My fiancé and I had stopped here before, mostly because it was next to our hotel and open late, and were unimpressed. The staff acted very unprofessionally-- shouting at each other across the restaurant and arguing over the thermostat. We vowed we wouldn't go back. But on our next trip to town, we really wanted milkshakes and thought for sure, this time would be better. Maybe they just didn't have their "A team" last time? How wrong we were. It took literally eight minutes to get our WATER. Then an additional 27 minutes to get our burger and chicken fingers. It took another couple minutes to get our shakes. All in all-- we spent AN HOUR at Steak'n'Shake, when there were only four other parties in the restaurant. Our food was fine-- if it had been what we ordered. They gave my fiancé cheese fries which he did not order. They also forgot his chili deluxe-- and when they brought it out-- it was just regular chili. We were just too tired to put up a fight at this point. As someone who has visited many Steak'n'Shakes-- I must tell you-- this is the worst. P. S. Don't look in the kitchen after you have eaten. I have been to many a Steak 'n Shake in my day, and I can say with 100% certainty that my meal here was by far the best I've ever had at a Steak 'n Shake. I kept it simple - ordered All American burger and asked for grilled onions instead of raw onions and mayo instead of mustard. It arrived hot, with a few pickles and exactly as I ordered it. The bun was excellent! It was soft, sweet and fresh. My husband's meal was also great - he ordered the Cajun burger. Our fries arrived hot and crispy, and we were very pleased with our meal! Since we were traveling through, we ordered a Cookie Dough shake for the road, which was blended perfectly - not too tough to suck up a straw, and not too liquidy. The only complaint I have to this otherwise amazing experience was that we ordered a coffee to go - and it was extremely watered down and not up to the standards of any of the other items we received. I ended up tossing it out instead of drinking it...which was a bummer. So, if you order a coffee, taste it before you roll out! Ps. The restaurant was clean! read more

Well we have had minor issues in the past...however this past week was a disaster and I definitely don't think we will be going back. We ordered online Saturday evening, we were given a time our food would be ready went to pick it up waited 20 minutes past pick up time, it took a phone call to the manager ( my grandson went to pick it up) before we got our food. Food was ice cold..my husbands order was missing the fries. Called back offered replacement food went last night and our onion rings were burnt, my husbands burger was not completely cooked. And we did not receive our shakes until after we had our food for 5 minutes. The waitress did not check on us once to see if everything was satisfactory. When we placed our drink order we ordered a shake and didn't get the shake until one hour later! We placed our food order about 10 minutes after we placed our drink order and waited for almost an hour for our food! Once we got our food our orders were not right at all. The only way we got our shake was for us to talk to another waitress and she made the shake for us. I took my family here expecting the quality I have always gotten at Steak and Shake and I was so disappointed. First off, the floors were FILTHY, and I mean gross! Well, my daughter really wanted a shake and I figured we weren't eating off the floor, so we were waiting to be seated, then the guy says we have to order at the kiosk because of covid. My mother wanted to leave then and we should have, you have to edit your order over and over because if you accidentally leave your finger on the screen too long, it orders multiples. At one point there were 10 drinks in my cart. (The kiosk has the nerve to ask if you want to leave a tip!) When I asked for help I had to walk past the counter to see a person and ask for help. They acted irritated. The tables weren't very clean, but there wasn't trash on them. The coke didn't work, there were only 4 packs of ketchup and 2 spoons. The wait wasn't too long, but the fries were cold and it didn't seem worth the price ($80.00+ for 5 people) to not even get a plate or bowl for your chili. No classic Steak and Shake hats that are half the fun, no coloring placemats, no fold up cars. No ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper on the table. How a place can look sterile and filthy at the same time is beyond me. It was actually sad and depressing. No one said, thank you, or can I help you. It was dreary. The burgers were good as always, but the atmosphere and service are dismal. We will never go to that location again.
