This place is honestly the worst steak and shake in all of Illinois among all of the accountabilities of being a fast food/ sit down restaurant. They take forever to actually even start cooking your food and their usual excuse is how busy they are, I guess with the same orders for a whole hour long. Often times I find the floor sticky or covered with something at the booth/ table I am seated at and find it very discomforting when I walk out with my foot sticking to the floor! The food is okay but nothing to wait so long for.

OK, I read some of the other reviews and we were there today and had to rank it only 1 star. The service was awful. I have reviewed another S&S because I do like the food and we tried the one in East Peoria-same thing - service is below par. This day,Sunday,was busy. Janet yelled "2?", did I expect anything like "Welcome to Steak&Shake?"guess I shouldn't have-we asked to be seated in a seat different from where she directed - that resulted in her slamming down menus and walking away. She came back to take our order, without drink order first. It was busy but tables were left dirty for TOO long. There were people walking up to the door and then leaving because the line was too long. Come to find out half those people already ate & were waiting to PAY for meal! Hubby got his burger after about 20 min. Mine, Janet said, was burned and they had to remake it. Oh, but when it came, lucky for me, they put fries on it, that I didn't order, but Janet wasn't gonna charge me for!! Woo hoo! Didn't want um anyway! The cashier did NOT ask how our meal was so we didn't volunteer anything. She DID ask the people before us. Why do I keep going? Lets see if this negative comment stays on here. If so maybe S&S will do something about it!!!! read more

This used to be the place to go! Liz and Jan, even Debbie were on top of all tables! Now it takes 5 - 6 waiters to even think about getting it together!!! The manager is cooking & not even seeing or caring about what is happening on the floor!!!! I would not step foot in this store again. My 90 yr old Mom and her friend (who is 92) have been frequenting this store for so long they keep wanting to go back to see their favorite waitresses. However, it has been so bad lately that even they have decided not to go back!!!! THAT IS AWFUL!!!!! There needs to be a change and soon. read more

I only knew this because I got a flyer in the mail offering a free sandwich for the grand opening of Jersey Mike's. Matt got the same flyer in the mail, so I asked him if he wanted to check the place out. He agreed and we found an afternoon we were both free to redeem our free sandwiches. We got lucky as there wasn't a long wait for us to order our food. The coupon we had was for a free sandwich but we also grabbed some chips and soda to round out the meal. From what I remember, ordering a sub here is like any other sub shop. You pick out what sandwich you want from the menu and then you can customize it to your liking. Matt and I placed our ordered, waited for our food and took a seat outside. I grew up eating Subway in my late teens and early 20s so I am all too familiar with eating and ordering sub sandwiches. It wasn't until I started to travel that I realized that sub sandwiches have more to them than the mass-produced stuff they have at Subway. I've tried Head West, Firehouse Subs, Snarfs, and a few others. Once I tried these places, I haven't had Subway since. It's just my personal opinion but I feel these smaller chains do it better. Does Jersey Mike's do it better than Subway? Yes. Yes it does and then some. Jersey Mike's is easily in my Top 5 for places to get subs. Despite not remembering the specific sandwich I ordered, I do remember being amazed at the softness of the bread and the quality of everything smashed in that small crevice where the bread was split open. Each bite was full of flavor and everything tasted as if it were cooked fresh. It was with luck that I got another flyer in the mail. It was an offer that any money donated to the local firefighters earned you a free sandwich. I took the offer down there, threw some money in their firefighter tip jar and quickly scooped up my free sandwich. I remember being amazed at how good it was and that my first trip wasn't a fluke. If you like subs, you owe it to yourself to try Jersey Mike's (or one of the ones listed above). If you don't have one near you, I would encourage you to see what smaller sub shops are in your area and to try them out. Sometimes its a nice surprise when you try the stuff that isn't known nationwide.
