They close at 11pm, that's what their hours show, my husband showed up in the drive thru at 10:34pm and they told him they were closed early for "cleaning" isn't that something you do once the store is closed? Not something you do 30 minutes before it's closed. This location I normally have a great experience. Today my boyfriend purchased his meal and I realized they didn't have what I had a taste for at the moment. Long story short i grab cheese sticks from pizza hut across the street. I come back and ask the gentleman at the counter can we wait for our uber and he says yes. Now we are at the table waiting I taste my cheese sticks and some random with a headset comes over to me and says no outside food. This Steak 'n Shake closes at 11:00 but if you come in at 9:00 on a Saturday night, you will be treated by a nice server but a shitty cook. We had six people in our party and wanted to all sit together. The chairs had been put up on the tables and as we were taking the chairs to all sit together, the cook started complaining and telling us to sit at a booth. Will never return. Ordered milkshakes at the end of our meal then our waiter proceeded to spend the next 20 minutes talking with friends. When we finally got his attention to ask about the shakes, his response was - oh, did you want those? Seriously??? We waited in line in the drive thru for close to thirty minutes for two kids' chicken finger meals and two burgers. It took fifteen of those minutes for the people in front of us to get their food, and ours still wasn't ready when we got to the window. For the longest time that I have lived in this town, Steak 'n Shake has always been 24hours even in the dinning area. I love it all. Friendly service, great food, inexpensive, and many of them are 24 hours now. I always get the same thing, shame on me, but the Steakburger platter with chili, fries and a side of cheese sauce rocks my world. I love their chili, full of meat and a great gravy, and the cheese sauce is incredibly tasty and doesn't congeal on you. The fries are thin, crisp, and just salty enough. I love the way the edges of the Steakburger are thin an a bit crisp and the fact that they cook them in front of you. Bonus points for the hot peppers in juice on the table for spicing things up. Food always arrives hot, and they are always happy to accommodate special orders. Shakes and other frozen beverages are always good, and they bring the extras to your table. I know this is technically fast food, but it sure doesn't feel like it. It's probably good I can only eat here when I'm traveling or I'd weigh about 300 pounds. read more

I was born/raised in California but Springfield is my dads hometown. Steak and Shake to the midwest is like In n Out to California (actually, in n out is much better but different too). No matter what we ALWAYS have to go to steak and shake for my dad to get his home-town fix. Ever since I was a little girl...single steak burger, fries and a salad, or maybe a cup of chili. Chocolate shake.....YUM. Then there was the year that the peanut butter shake came out! oh..my...dear!! then there was the time I was in town and they just started the side by side shakes..ahh!! I now eat nothing like I used to and the last few times I went to S&S I got a salad. It was your basic fast food salad. Not great but not bad either. I love the decor of S&S and the diner part of it but the reason it gets 5 stars is because a)the memories I have going here since I was a kid and b)the really nice man that has worked up front for as long as I can remember. Went there this afternoon around 1:30 and service was horrible. I went through the drive thru and I always check my bag before I leave because they usually don't put in my cheese sauce, but this time they didn't put in an order of chicken strips and a cheese sauce. When I (politely) pointed out what I was missing the young man at the window took the bag from me but then shut the window on me while I was still talking and just compared things on my receipt. I eventually got my correct food without any kind word or apology and he told me he gave me all fresh food. He did not. I'm tired of messing with this location. Really bad survice! All of the employees are pretend they are really busy. We wait like 20 minutes without survice. After talking like 2 minutes. They told me they are really busy and some of them are still chatting in the corner. I finally got my drink and it should be unsweet tea and they give me sweet. I heard this Steak 'n Shake had a decent horseshoe so I dropped in to try it. The restaurant wasn't very busy but I had to wait for service anyway. Once I was served, I was completely ignored. I waited for a refill on my water and it never came. I didn't think this disservice merited a tip but when I went to the register to pay, the attendant handed me the receipt expecting me to tip. I did so reluctantly. I will never be back. This seems a place never to eat alone. You will be ignored. read more

Just went through the drive-thru.... no one in line in front of me. Wait for food wasn't too long but I got one $4 meal and two chili 3 ways and it was over $17!!!. Drove about 5 minutes to get home and all the food was cold... all of it.... and the burger was soggy. Additionally, the helping size of each of the chili 3 ways was minimal. We are regulars at this location and your experience depends a lot on what time you go in. This review is for the morning crew, evenings tend to be longer waits and orders bungled. Breakfast is good for the money and kids eat free on the weekends, that's hard to beat. We had a wonderful waitress, Geri, and she made sure everything was right when we got it which is huge for me. Drinks were always full and she checked on us several times. I did have an issue with the dirty floor, it seemed greasy and dangerous. Hopefully that was a one time problem, we enjoyed our meal with Geri and we'll be back soon! read more

I've been coming to this Steak n' Shake location since the old building and this year it has gone downhill FAST! I try to give them the benefit of the doubt since it was great services and food when I was a kid, but this restaurant now has neither. The last few times the services has been awful and we have been sat before others who get waited on and order before we've even gotten to speak to our waiter. The staff are all on drugs with the most bloodshot eyes and glazed over composure. The drive thru is a joke and have never heard of a coupon. Multiple times I've been waiting in the drive thru for 15-30 minutes for a simple order. They also close before the times they have listed online and never answer the phone. I don't suspect this location or the one on dirkens to be here for much longer with the awful services at each location. read more

So I'm from the Alton area, we go to Steak 'n Shake not so often. There's pretty good service there but we came up to Springfield to go to some museums. It was dinner so we went to steak and shake we had 5 girls and 1 boy, but our waiter said "hi ladies" since when was there gender associated? But when she went to move our table she knocked of all our condiments. I Was a little disappointed but we ordered fries with seasoning and there was no seasoning on them but overall the food came very fast and delicious. First off I placed a pick up order at 4:40pm to be picked up at 6pm. I get there at 5:50pm expecting to wait maybe 10 minutes, oh no not the case I went inside and waited in line for about 5 minutes okay, I tell the man at counter I have a pick for 6pm gave my name he shouts it back to cooks, No one responds or acts like they care. I wait another 20 minutes with no one approaching me to say the order isn't ready, or they are working on it nothing . I ask again about my order the man asks manager who didn't care much and said I dont know where its at we have drive thru orders too, really i ordered at 4:40pm.. no excuses for the stupidity I witnessed. Many people who ordered behind me got their food way before me whom I pre ordered and pre paid, As far as hygiene and Covid go, terrible service, the hamburger cook didn't wear a mask half the time, another man didn't have gloves on while touching food, the man at the register didn't have gloves or mask over his nose, touched money numerous times, and then filled drinks, scooped chilli and back to register without ever washing his hands. NEVER again when I order from here. The overall service was a nightmare and the so called manager was disrespectful and rude. I will definitely pass on my experience!! read more
