Zero stars, don't go to this location. Placed an order, 7:30 PM on a Wednesday night: single cheeseburger, cheeseburger combo, chicken tender combo, large soda. Received our drinks and was asked to park in front and food would be out shortly. I see others waiting inside and in the parking lot. I go in after waiting 15 minutes and was told the order was on its way out. I see another person get their order and then come back with the bags, which was probably my order. I go in again and ask how much longer for my order, the 2 cooks look at the bags the other customer brought back, and say it will be a few more minutes. They then add a fresh burgers to the grill and take the bags out of sight. I asked for a refund, since I didn't want to wait any longer, and didn't want to risk being given any food that already left the store and was brought back. Wasn't worth my time or money to drive back (it's a $4 meal) but called to let them know to make sure they're checking this before serving customers. This is not my typical Steak 'n Shake, I'm usually a Hampton location boy. However, this morning we thought we'd change it up. It wasn't bad, but I think I need to stay with my regular location up on Hampton. Our server was friendly and attentive. We were fairly early and as the restaurant filled up you could see the community camaraderie. So many of the diners all knew each other and our server would greet them by name. Even with this being our first visit, we still received the same quality of service as her regulars. The grill-man did a great job on preparing our eggs over easy and making our Hash Browns extra crispy. I always request crispy HB's, my taste-buds just like them better. The SO's side of pancakes were evenly golden in color and his patty sausage were Jimmy Dean good. I have mixed feelings on two of my sides. My bacon appeared to have been fried in advance and waiting for an order. It was chilled and chewy. The biscuit was dry, but when combined with the thick sausage milk crazy it was enjoyable. However, if it were a moist flaky biscuit, it would get two thumbs up from this pudgy ex-farm boy. Overall, a good visit for a inexpensive breakfast. read more

Pick a different Steak 'n Shake. Never going to this one again. We had a big order we put in online and it said 7:20 pickup. We waiting an extra 45 minutes before our cold food was brought out to us. Had to go back in because we were missing multiple things. Both female workers there were short tempered and accusatory, one of them suggesting we did actually get all our food when that wasn't the case. They gave us our milkshakes first and then we had to wait another 30 min for our food, so the milkshakes were all melted by the time we left with our cold food. Awful service. read more

Me and my buddies come to this steaksnshake multiple times each week to hang out and get food together. I've noticed that the receipts have a survey for a free shake. Every time I go me and my buddies each fill out the coupon and get free shakes. However this time we went and we ordered our shakes to go and the young lady working came out to us and we were the only one is the restaurant and told us that she wasn't going to make our shakes because we didn't "pay for them". Of course we didn't pay for them we used the reward from the survey. She threatened to kick us out unless we went to pay for the shakes that were supposed to be free from the survey. I would understand not making them if the place was packed but we were the only ones there so she had nothing better to do. I was very disappointed and I don't plan on going back unless I get compensation for the shakes I don't get or something changes in the management there. The service is awful. My dad, daughter, and I made the mistake of having dinner here at 5:30pm today. We were one of three tables in the restaurant. I would estimate that 15 people were working during our visit, and yet the service was very slow. My waiter, Antonio, showed a complete lack of concern for doing his job. I imagine old people on vacation move with greater purpose than him. He even started to eat a meal while we were still waiting on our food. Let me repeat that. Antonio, sat down at a table and started to eat his own dinner while we were still waiting on some of our order. To top off our regretful experience, Antonio argued with me after I told him that they screwed up our milkshake orders (wrong size and wrong flavor). I've had problems in the past with this location so returning to eat there tonight, I really had my reservations. It was busy, and it looked as though they were short handed on help, it did take the waitress a little longer than need be to get to the table, so immediately I had my assumptions in gear planning on this being a long wait to get served. I was quickly put to ease when she did arrive at the table, and took the order. Servers were sarcastic. We were asked to seat ourselves and grab menus. They skipped helping a table who was already here. I mistakenly tried to be kind, and pointed this out. Took another 20 minutes to even get a drink order. The server finally took our complete order with drinks and food. Over 10 minutes later after that, we got our drinks. Server said, "Sorry for your wait on these (our drinks), needed to make sure that table's food was right." There were 3 seated tables when we arrived. So not even close to busy. I don't write reviews often, however, I feel this one is warranted. This is hands down the worst establishment I have ever been to, let alone the worst Steak and Shake. Several times I have been turned away from "not enough staff" "inside closed" etc. despite having a 24 hour sign up in their window. This place has the rudest staff imaginable-called to ask why they weren't open, got snapped at and hung up on, got told by a staff member to please call the hotline and tell how terrible the service was so that maybe things could get better, etc. This place is deplorable and I certainly hope they get shut down. My wife is a fan of Steak n Shake food. I stopped here to pick up dinner Sunday evening and got the lowest possible service. I sat at the counter to place my carry out order. The grill man gave me a glance I smiled at him. I was the only person at the counter and there were four tables occupied in the dining area. After not getting greeted for a couple of minutes I looked at my watch. The grill man left his place and I assumed he was going to get a server. I was fooled. No one came. Then a line cook moved my direction but she ignored me and got something from under the counter. I was getting pretty annoyed and noted that a full ten minutes had passed. I'm not sure why I keep going to Steak n Shake in general. The wait times for just a single shake are just ridiculous. The customer service at the front counters is seriously lacking. While a manager counted a drawer, the line of people waiting to pay or waiting to order grew to 10 long. Possibly understaffed? Once my order was taken, there was no apology for the wait, so I'm not sure if they are oblivious to the problem, or just don't care. My shake took about 10 minutes to prepare. Upon delivery the cup was covered in ice cream. He seemed annoyed I asked for a napkin... I want to say I wont go back to Steak n Shake since the service is terrible, but sometimes you just need a shake in the middle of the afternoon. read more

Just waited 45 minutes for my food; workers could not have cared less and were very unapologetic. Also asked for extra Buffalo sauce and didn't get it--when I went inside to ask for it I was asked for my ticket number as if I was just strolling in there to randomly cop some Buffalo sauce. I told her I just waited 45 minutes in line and I just want the sauce I asked for..I was not rude about it. She said nothing to me and yelled at someone to bring it up and I waited another four or five minutes because when it was brought up and set on the counter (near the kitchen) she deliberately chose not to bring it to me right away and let me stand there and stare at it while she moved .0000 miles an hour filling up a soda. Finally handed it to me, not a word. Also, as I stood there I noticed how all the workers were just moseying around at their own pace; hence the 45 minute wait. Steak n Shake is generally very delicious and if you want at late night snack or some greasy, inexpensive food, definitely come here. This particular Steak n Shake is fairly new, so their decor is not as dirty as some of their older restaurants. So a big plus there. Had a good experience as well with the waitress - she was friendly enough, and even re-filled water. I always come to Steak n Shake whenever I visit St. Louis - it's so nostalgic, and they haven't let me down. read more

I had to wait a little longer ("Just pull over to that big shake sign and it will be out nice and fresh for you in about four and a half minutes!") but I didn't even care that it was actually more than four and a half minutes because it was certainly fresh, and delicious. And the kid at the window was super bubbly. I like bubbly at 3 in the morning. It just makes me enjoy life. It's like, why NOT be friendly and corny just because it's at an incredibly strange and somewhat dangerous hour here at Kingshighway and Chippewa? Life's too short to be crabby! I grew up in St Louis and love Steak'n'Shake. It's a shame all the people who love it as well don't review this place to give it the rating it deserves. On my latest trip to St Louis, we got the Prince Royale Steakburger and it was excellent. Their shakes are amazing as well. However, they will give you a mix unless you request and a pay a little more for real ice cream. Their fries are probably my least favorite due to the fact that they get cold fast. So eat them quick, and you'll be able to appreciate their uniqueness. read more
