Food was great. Restaurant lacked cleanliness, but I could attribute some of that to the lack of employees to how busy they were. The restaurant stayed slammed the entire time I was there. There are some obvious tell tell signs of cleaning issues, but I have worked in a restaurant environment before and some very high end ones at that, so these things reach out to me more than most. I can tell that this restaurant lacks a strong leader either in ownership or the GM position at the least. Staff was pleasant all the time I was there, not near focused on the task at hand. I arrived approximately 1 hour before closing and that was very evident through my entire visit, from being served with plastic utensils to the manager telling the wait staff to stop sitting people 30 minutes prior to closing. This is unacceptable in my opinion, and actually mis advertisement, it the sign says your open until 11pm that means if a bus rolls in at 10:58 and they all get inside you sit them and serve them as if they were the first customers of the day, very obvious this is not the practice at this location. I rarely give reviews but had to give one to this Union City location because service was so bad. I saw the drive thru line was long so I went in to order. Mind you when I walked in there was only a few families sitting down at tables. Not busy at all on the inside. I go to the "to go" counter to place my order and no one came. They had a bunch of workers in the back and all of them looked at me but no one to say .."just a moment or be right with you". The server that was on the floor had an attitude and never even made contact with me yet she kept looking at me like she had an attitude. I've never left a review but at 12:20 am I am compelled to write about the experience I just had at steak n shake. Again I say 12:20am, I went there at 10:52pm. This was the worsttttt service I've ever experienced, my daughter & I actually fell asleep in the drive thru..the car behind us honked the horn to make us move up but it really didnt matter being that we still were 2 cars away from the window, so we still had a long wait ahead of us.Now when we get to the window the guy is not apologetic at all, he just stated "you guys fell asleep , I know" & claimed that it was just two of them there. What I was trying to figure out though was why I saw (beside the two guys) a young girl walking around scratching her head, another woman walking around acting like she Freezing, & two other guys that I saw walk past, & why won't everyone helping out with this 1 hour drive thru..anyway when he gave us the food, my daughter didnt get her Parmesan cheese fries, so he took it & just put a whole bunch just on the top..no mixing it, no shaking,nothing just handed them back just like that..thennnnnn after getting that straight he thennnnn goes to make the shakes, WHY DIDN'T HE MAKE THOSE WHILE THE ONEEEE OTHER GUY WAS DOING THE FOOD!!!! We came in to order two shakes to go and left 45 minutes later with not even a refund. They were extremely disorganized and the staff would walk off randomly to talk to friends or leave the building. For "fast food" it was NOWHERE near fast. It was extremely frustrating and annoying, especially since most Steak and Shake places are delicious. Avoid this one at all costs. read more

Came in were not busy at all. Sat at our table took our drink order. 2 more groups were sat 5-10 mins after us. We shared a waitress with one of hose groups. We didn't get our drinks until that group did. The other group then got there food before we did and there were more people in that group. Got our food and and ordered no cheese on my burger. Regrettably one star is the lowest rating available; this place is not close to deserving even this. This was the absolutely worst experience I have ever had at any restaurant or fast food establishment!!! First time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. My family was travelling through Georgia on our way to Florida for vacation on July 24, 2016 and stopped at the Steak 'n Shake in Union City outside Atlanta on a Sunday night. The place was busy when we arrived (though I can't understand why unless these other patrons were as unaware of how pathetic the place was we were) but the crowd thinned out shortly afterwards. The place was horribly dirty ( we ended up wiping down our own booth table). The floors were dirty; they put up the plastic yellow caution signs but never bothered to clean up the spills on the floors. We waited for over 45 minutes for our food even though there were very few customers in the place for most of the time we were there. No explanation or apology was offered. We were never given any napkins. My wife went to the front and asked a manager for napkins. He tore off a piece of paper towel (the coarse, stiff, brown type which was not perforated into sections) and handed it to her. She informed him that all six of us needed napkins and he simply proceeded to rip off more pieces for her. The food was at best mediocre. My wife ordered sliders (hamburger) which, upon inspection, was merely a hamburger which they had cut in half. The orders were not filled correctly. The waiter (though very polite) never checked on us again. There appeared to be a lot of workers there but few doing any work. While paying my bill I inquired about the long delay and was told that they only had one cook. The most amazing thing about all of this is the mystery of how an such an establishment can stay in business. I will never go into one of these stores again. read more

Came here for a quick bite before a movie with my boyfriend for date night. It was pretty busy, but everyone was nice enough. Ordered two milkshakes, frisco melt, and apple harvest salad. Waiter was confused about what salad. No worries. Water came after 10 mins or so. Then milkshakes come. One of them was wrong. Took another 15 mins to flag the waiter down to tell him. He was confused about how to order the right milkshake and another server had to tell him how to put it in. Fast forward to the frisco melt coming out, and after about 10-15mins of waiting more for the salad my boyfriend goes to ask where the salad was. Apparently they forgot about the salad, didn't have the ingredients for it, and never brought the right milkshake to me. 50 mins later we paid for the chocolate milkshake and left without ever having eaten. Waiter seemed completely not concerned. Other servers were trying to help fix the mistake. So if you do go, pray you don't have Malik or he gets better training on the menu/ checking on the table. :/ read more

I wrote the previous review while waiting for my drink as I choked down my very dry Frisco Melt and hard fries. After my meal was done and my wife's drink was empty, we stopped another waitress who refilled my wife's empty drink and retrieved my long-awaited tea. While we waited, another customer complained to a "manager" (a woman in regular clothes behind the counter that seemed to do very little) that the men's room was trashed and "unusable." There was no sense of urgency on behalf of the store employees and, after a while, a young man with a spray bottle went in to (hopefully) fix the problem. I was astounded with the lack of empathy and sheer incompetency. Our original waitress mysteriously showed up to take our money at the register, only to be unable to open the cash drawer. Our bill was $15.04, and even though we gave her $20.05, the register showed she owed us 4.96 (she made a mistake entering our money), and the "manager" (????) standing there told her to give us a 5-dollar bill. I'm not going to get pissy about a penny, but two people couldn't even make correct change with a cash register in front of them both! This store needs to be shut down and bulldozed. read more

I feel like people are expecting 5 star service from what is ultimately a fast food restaurant. Admittedly, the staff does seem to still be learning the ropes. I was seated quickly, and my order was taken and my food was brought out quickly. It was hot and fresh, my boys loved tje shakes. It was pretty crowded so my waiter was a bit hard to track down for my bill. By the time we were leaving, there was a long wait for incoming guest to be seated. So when I went to the counter to pay and get a box for my food. My table was turned over, and my leftovers were thrown away (hence thee 4 stars). When I brought it to the person he took the order and made a new sandwich wearing the same gloves that he took my money with. This is my first time here and most likely my last. I came here between 3:30 and 4:00pm. Store was about two thirds full. I was seated so I had a view of everyone going in or out of the store. My first impression, not enough people working to handle the crowd. Service was slow, almost a forty minute wait from time I entered store to having food placed in front of me. I cannot for the life of me see why anyone would go through the drive thru window. While waiting for my order, I had plenty of time to read the previous reviews for this place and they were spot on. I don't see any real hope for change for the better here since the reviews have been overall bad for a lengthy period of time. Not impressed with the burger or fries, thin is in I guess except I prefer thick and juicy when eating this type of food. No real flavor to the meat or fries. No complaints about my milkshake, it was decent and got the happy hour price. That was my one star for this experience. read more
