I first discovered Steam Rice Roll King during the Sunset Night Market. We received passes for taste of sunset where you get to go to a bunch of shops and they have a pre-made item for you to grab. We stopped by right before they were closing and the owner still accommodated our large order. Since then I've been back during the week at odd hours and the wait time for the rolls isn't bad. I know I read other reviews and it said 30 minutes but I've always only waited about 15. I love the Chinese bacon with fatty pork with added corn and mushrooms. Everytime i buy rice rolls or rice noodles from other spots and try to reheat the next day, it's already hard but I've never had that issue with rice rolls here. They're so fresh that I can literally pop them in the microwave directly from the fridge and it heats up so soft. I also love that they have many classic Chinese items like steamed black sesame rolls, herbal tea, taro sage, etc. During the most recent night market I stopped in again right before they closed the kitchen and they accommodated my order. While I was waiting for my order a couple came in and wanted to order but they said the kitchen was closed. Then they asked if there's anything they have or can make and they were out of almost everything they had (even the premade stuff). Then the chef (i think he owns the shop with his wife) sticks his head out from behind the kitchen and told his wife that to grab an order that they had already packed. So apparently they made someone's order but added the wrong topping so they had to remake it and they had this left over. They gave it to the couple and they offered to pay but the wife said it was fine. Anyways, I love this kind of hospitality! read more

Two ironies about Steam Rice Roll King: 1) It's not as good as Rice Roll Express in Chinatown. This is the first time I've ever thought something in ultra touristy Chinatown ever one-upped a local neighborhood favorite in the Sunset. 2) The chang fen (or cheung fun) was actually the worst item from my order here. 开平咸肉粽 pork zongzi 4.5 This was undoubtedly the best item. Since there's only one flavour option, I'm glad it's savoury, as I'm team savoury all the way when it comes to zongzi. It's also a couple dollars cheaper here than at iCafe in Chinatown where I've gone for zongzi hauls before. 猪肉粥 dry scallops, dry oysters, gingko, pork congee 3.5 Tbh when I first unpacked the congee, I thought they forgot to add the toppings, but then I saw them sparsely gathered at the bottom. The flavour was good, but there honestly weren't enough toppings. 鸡蛋肠粉 egg rice rolls 2.5 This was the worst item for good reason. Under normal circumstances, I would've ordered rice rolls with shrimp, pork, or beef to try a signature option. However, all the meat options came with corn, it could not be removed, and corn does NOT belong in Chinese food as cheap filler, so I ordered plain with egg, scallions, and bean sprouts. I've tried similar at Rice Roll Express when I went there with my vegetarian friend, and the egg was plentiful, but at Steam Rice Roll King, it was seemingly an afterthought. I couldn't finish the rice rolls because there was so much rice roll lacking egg. In conclusion, I'd def order zongzi from here again if I wanted a convenient, savory snack but skip the rest. read more

Huge fan of steamed rice rolls and this place didn't disappoint! I noticed there has been a few more of these rice roll places opening up around the city in the recent years. This one, similar to the other ones is fairly reasonably priced, with items at around 7-8 dollars for a tray of rice rolls. I ordered the bbq pork and the minced beef. With the order of steam rice rolls, you can choose two different items to go in it such as mushrooms, vegetables, corn or lettuce options. The order took about 15-20 mins after ordering on the machine. While the front says cash only, I was able to pay with card on the machine. I think it is just the counter items that are cash only? There were some dim sum type things in the front. It took me nearly an hour to get home to eat them and they were still nice and warm when I got back. Maybe I was super hungry but they both tasted very good! I especially liked the bbq pork with corn. Would definitely come back! read more

I'm going to have to downgrade due to poor communication and service that spoiled our evening and wasted a lot of time. I had spent time gathering a group order (8 items), and we submitted it online about 1 hour prior to their closure at 5pm. A few minutes after putting in the order, they called to let us know that it would take a little more time and would be ready by 5pm, which was fine. But upon arrival 45 mins later, they said they actually couldn't prep any of the orders on time, so nothing was prepared. Not even 1 or 2 items. We had collected orders for 8 people, invested about 1.5 hrs in ordering and arriving here to satisfy a strong craving, only to become sorely disappointed. I had to apologize to everyone in the group. Maybe they should note that they may not be able to take any orders 1+ hour from closing time, say they may run out of ingredients, or mention that earlier on the phone call so we wouldn't need to continue looking forward to it. Stopped by here to pick-up a beef rice roll before visiting mom. I placed an order for three minced beef rice rolls, two shrimp rice rolls and a beef brisket rice roll. There were so many nostalgic items that I ended up also getting a Chinese tamale and some rice cakes filled with egg custard. Because the rice rolls are made to order, it took close to 30 minutes for my order to be ready. Upon getting to my mom's, I realized they didn't give me my beef brisket roll and gave me an extra shrimp roll instead. Now a much brighter but smaller place, the name speaks for itself. truly some of the best steamed rice rolls I've had in the Bay Area and so close to home! Brisket roll (5/5) tender chunks of brisket that tastes like it's been stewed all day, this is my favorite item on the menu. add some corn, green onion and an egg, you got yourself a hearty breakfast or lunch! There was a constant line of people coming in ordering and taking out. They make everything fresh in the back as you can see them cooking the food. I just waited patiently. They call you and you pick up your food. Good thing they remember you and know what ordered I ordered and called me over to counter. I brought it home and opened it and wow, it's pretty big portions. You can order using the kiosk or the person behind the counter. I used the kiosk and every rice roll you order, you get 2 free toppings... Nice! It is made to order so there is a 10 to 15 min wait. They also had some very affordable dessert that I picked up as well. Got my order and the portion size is plentiful.. Double the size of what you get a Ji chang and cost less too. Taste is great too. I've tried the beef brisket, shrimp, and Chinese sausage and ham rice rolls, and my favorite is the beef brisket. The meat portion size is actually pretty sizable, and the noodle sheets are nice and thin. Each comes with two free toppings, and I usually opt for Chinese parsley and mushroom slices. Their chilled Hong Kong milk tea is also pretty decent and authentic, and I appreciate that it's not watered down with ice. The soft and chewy red bean rice cakes are an enjoyable little snack. They give a good portion of pretty soft and fresh noodles, but there wasn't much beef brisket. If only they added more meat, it would have been 5 stars. When I was a kid and went to dim sum, my favorite dish was Beef Chong fun with its slightly sweet soy sauce. Dim sum was priced based on how expensive each dish was (small, medium, large). Well, this dish was always expensive for some reason and I felt bad that my favorite dish was one of the more expensive ones. Well, now you can find stores that specialize in just this dish. Took a little while to get our order, but each dish is made from scratch and freshly made, so will take longer.
