Steel Plow has come a long way since they first opened. They've improved on many levels. Servers know the menu and what they're doing. The kitchen is more on the ball. Food comes out in a reasonable amount of time. I think the bar is still a bit on the slow side, but not unreasonably so. Their specialty burgers really are quite delicious. Unique flavor combinations and cooked to order. Interesting menu and burger and shake of the month are fun variations as well. I did order a shake once... just... well, they're large, enough Calories to be 4 or 5 meals and while quite delicious, and quite an impressive presentation... once was enough for me. I have a chronic illness and one time wanted a burger in the worst way (sometimes the only way I can eat is to eat what sounds good) and I called to place a to-go order and was told they do not do take out orders. I later asked our server and she said that the kitchen is just so small that they have made it policy to not do take out orders. Of course, that's slightly disappointing, but it was good to know the reason for something that made absolutely no sense (especially in the middle of a hangry craving!). We're semi-regulars here. We avoid weekends (Thurs-Sat) because the lines and wait times get unruly and the noise level is just too high, but in general, we very much enjoy it here. read more

Even the bathrooms were super clean and had a changing table in the stall so my son could have privacy. The food was amazing! We started with the poutine, best I've had! Then I ordered the Jumping Johnny B's Truffle, swiss and mushroom burger with sweet potato fries which was SO SO good!! Delicious!! My wife asked for a taste of the only Chardonnay they have on the menu and the waitress returned to say she couldn't that they only give tastes on the beers. That's baffling! My wife told her to go ahead and just bring a glass and it took 20 minutes and only arrived because a different server brought us our food and we asked for the wine again. What a great name for a restaurant in Moline,Illinois. That was all I found to be great about this place. I'm not sure how it applies to burgers though. My wife and I have been here 9 or 10 times and the service can be hit or miss. Today for lunch, we were with a group of 8 and our server forgot to put in my order. By the time my food came out everyone else was almost done with their meal. I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos, but when my food arrived, the fish was cold and I sent it back. The manager offered to make it again, but it would have taken another 15 to 20 minute and there was no offer to comp the meal. I ended up eating half a sandwich that someone in our group offered. Another time at the Steel Plow it took 40 minutes to get a bowl of soup. Our server said it took so long because all of the soup bowls were dirty and everyone was too busy to wash a bowl. Great fresh food! Service is good too! They had trouble with the Bud Light draft beer line but the manager got right on it and delivered an ice cold beer! I will definitely be back! Only minor negative for me was it was a bit too cold with all of the fans going at such a high speed for the weather we were having that day. After hearing several firsthand horror stories in addition to the reviews on here, I expected the service at Steel Plow to be a lot worse. Don't get me wrong, it was far from perfect - we asked for multiple items that never came or came after we were already finished with our meal, our server seemed very unfamiliar with the beer menu, and we were seated at a pretty small booth for a party of six when a much larger table was available in the same section - but our waitress was nice and never left us alone for too long. I'm a little mad at my family because they didn't want to get shakes. I really wanted to try one. Our food was only okay. Almost everyone got a burger. I got a "build your own" that was cooked to my specification. The pretzel bun was good. My sister ordered a Double Dare Ya Burger, which was advertised as a double cheeseburger but was really just a loosely packed patty that was twice as big. My sister's friend got the macaroni and cheese, which she really liked. The restaurant itself is looking quite spiffy. The burgers were moderately priced, just nothing the write home about. Steel Plow is within a couple miles from my house, so when I heard it was opening I was excited to have a new neighborhood spot to go. The biggest issue for me during my first visit was the lighting. I came in on a Saturday night around 9:30 and could not believe how bright it was everywhere in the restaurant. I certainly don't expect, nor want a dark bar atmosphere but this is a harsh bright light that did not help the atmosphere and overall comfort level. It was bad enough that I don't want to go back until they fix it. The food was good but needs a few improvements. My fiancée and I ordered the poutine as an appetizer. The fries were similar to potato wedges, crispy with a flavorful gravy and topped with cheese curds. The cheese curds were still cold despite being partially covered in warm gravy. Would have been a lot better if the cheese curds were slightly melted or at least warm. I ordered a pretty standard cheeseburger and I thought it was great. My fiancée also had a burger and thought it was very good. She also had a small side salad with ranch and the ranch was terrible! Practically inedible not sure if it's house made or just a bad batch but it was far worse than any bottled salad dressing I have had. Beer selection was good and service was just okay. Build your own Burger - $9 - the burger is barely bigger than a $1 mcdonalds burger. why bother asking how you want it cooked, its too small & thin, it will be at least well done no matter what you order. my burger was ordered medium, it arrived past well done. my burger had a different cheese than i asked for. my burger didnt have the bacon that i asked for. what?!? i got it on a "pretzel" bun. this was not a pretzel bun. it was something that resembled it, barely, it had none of the normal characteristics of a great pretzel bun. schnucks sells la briola pretzel buns, the farmers market sells their own, barley & rye bakery sells their own. these are all real pretzel buns. the "pretzel" bun from this place was a regular bun, that tasted like a regular bun, that sort of looked like a pretzel on the outside and that was the end of the resemblence. that bun would not be allowed to enter the city limits of chicago. the regular burgers are "prime rib" burgers. it could be dog meat burgers, as small and overcooked as they are, it makes no difference what meat is used. they offer grass fed beef or bison for $2.50 more. that would be a waste of money & disrespectful to the meat because it will be rendered useless by having a burger that small and thin that wont be cooked correctly. for an appetizer we unfortunately got the chicken "wings". they arent chicken wings, they are chicken legs. normal chicken wings are fried and then tossed in sauce, maybe grilled after that. these were breaded and had sauce in a cup on the side. they were warm, not hot. the waitress said 6 came in an order. we got 5, one was like half a leg also. running a burger restaurant should be the single easiest type of restaurant to operate. you dont need to have chefs to cook them, its easy to make great burgers. this place totally fails on that. the staff is not well trained, the waitress was nice but terrible at actual waitressing. the older woman manager was angry that she had to deduct something from our bill after two of our burgers and side orders were messed up. I was watching the kitchen area and observed an older gentleman tasting the food from the steam table. He not only tasted three different items while I watched but, he used the same spoon in each item. I was shocked to say the least. How unsanitary and just downright gross. I don't know what items are kept on the steam table but you can bet if I ever go back I will make sure I do not order anything that is there. I had a side salad (which was about 45% cheese, 55% lettuce, but I'm not complaining, I love cheese, but just fair warning to those that like lettuce with their salad). Lots of little touches make this a fun experience. On a break from car shopping, we were ultra hungry when we stopped here. So the delay between seating and order taking at 2 p.m. was not ideal. But we enjoyed everything else, particularly the food quality. We ordered two specialty burgers, a tenderloin and the Mac and cheese for my son. All were great, though the tenderloin was a little greasier than my mother in law preferred. I don't know what the previous poster expected from a tenderloin in the Midwest, but it's traditional to have the patty be far bigger than the bun, not an oddity. I liked the wire baskets, honestly, and thought they were a nice, quaint touch, along with the metal cup the fries came in, the glass jar the ticket came in and the angled dish the mac and cheese was in. To each his own, I suppose. Ultimately, we were here for the food, though, and the burgers were awesome. My Firestarter had a robust, spicy pico and an extra jalapeño on top, my salad was very good despite the national romaine recall that forced a new mix and my son all but licked the bowl of his food. My wife nearly died tasting her mushroom burger, but I didn't taste it because I think mushrooms are gross. A few of the fries were too crispy, but the mixture was fun. Going to a new restaurant is always exciting! My husband and I went here for the first time for lunch yesterday. Our server was absolutely fantastic. He was quick and attentive. He made sure to tell us all about the food and drink specials, and let us look over the menu to decide. The burger was done to perfection and the mix of fries filled us up so much to the point where the shake wasn't an option!
