I was really excited to try Gaston's Italian Steakhouse because I'd been looking forward to having a great steak. Our first impression was very good. We were greeted immediately, seated right away, and our waitress was attentive and friendly throughout the evening. Before ordering, I actually spoke with the owner, Gaston, because I wanted his recommendation for the best steak on the menu. He confidently recommended the Cowboy Ribeye, assuring me that it was one of their signature steaks. I ordered it medium rare with a little char, exactly the way I enjoy it. I also asked if I could substitute the mashed potatoes and broccoli for another side since I don't eat either of those. I was told substitutions were not allowed. For a $60 steak, I found that disappointing. I wasn't asking for anything extravagant--just a different vegetable or a simple side salad. When my steak arrived, it was much smaller than I expected for the price and didn't resemble the Cowboy Ribeye I was anticipating. It was cooked slightly over medium rare, and while it wasn't terrible, the flavor was only average and had a slightly off taste, almost as if the broiler hadn't been cleaned recently. To make matters worse, the mashed potatoes and broccoli I had specifically asked to leave off the plate were served anyway. To be fair, the service was excellent. Our waitress handled everything professionally and even apologized for the sides, explaining the kitchen had plated them before she could stop it. The chicken scallopini ordered by someone else in our party was very good, and the other chicken entrées were also enjoyed. Unfortunately, I came for the steak, and that's where the experience fell well short of expectations. At this price point, I expected a high-quality cut of beef, some flexibility with side dishes, and an overall experience that matched the cost. Instead, it felt like every effort was made to minimize portions and avoid accommodating a simple request. I always try to support local restaurants, and I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews. But when you're paying premium prices, the food should reflect it. Based on my experience, I can't recommend the steaks here. read more

While in the area finishing up a wine event, my friend and I decided to stop by Gaston's for dinner. With it being a Thursday evening, we were able to be seated right away because it was practically empty. Gaston's is absolutely beautiful. The entrance displays a beautiful, vibrant picture of Italy. There's also a stand that displays the Dining Area Dress Code, which is Business Casual Attire. Our server stopped by our table and was very pleasant. She was able to answer all of our questions and gave us some time to look over the menu. The complimentary Focaccia Bread with the fresh tomatoes were simple yet delicious. We had olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the table as well that could be used as a dipping oil for the bread. I decided on the Onion Soup to start, which was very savory and delicious. For my entree, I ordered the Wagyu Bolognese and my friend ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo. Unfortunately, the pasta in our dishes were a bit hard and chewy, it should've been cooked a tad bit longer. Also, my friend asked if the pasta was homemade and the server let us know that it wasn't...we could tell! You would think for an Italian restaurant like this, they would've had homemade pasta, it definitely would've helped the dish. The Bolognese was okay but lacked a lot of flavor. I barely ate it. Beautiful Space, But Food Missed the Mark My Bestie and I decided to try Gaston's Italian Steakhouse after a wine class at Total Wine (it's in the same plaza, which is super convenient). We were honestly a little hesitant going in because of the reviews... and unfortunately, I can see why now. First impressions -- the restaurant is gorgeous. The hostess stand is stunning, there's a visible dress code posted (which caught my attention), and the bar area where we were seated is beautifully designed with a very upscale Italian vibe. It was surprisingly empty for an 8 PM reservation, though -- only one other couple in the bar area and no one in the main dining room. Our waitress was a standout. She greeted us right away, was incredibly pleasant, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We always appreciate when a server can confidently recommend dishes -- it makes a difference. They start you off with focaccia bread, and I have to say... it was amazing. Soft, flavorful, and paired with olive oil and balsamic for dipping -- easily one of the best parts of the meal. (Side note: I'll never understand why two people get three pieces of bread give us four so we don't have to negotiate!) For entrées, my Bestie ordered the rigatoni Bolognese, and I went with the fettuccine Alfredo (no pancetta, no peas -- which they did accommodate). Here's where things went downhill. The pasta was not good. At all. I understand al dente, but this wasn't that -- it was hard. On top of that, it tasted like boxed pasta, which is disappointing for a restaurant that presents itself as upscale Italian. When we mentioned it to our server (after barely touching our plates), she did go back to the kitchen, but we were told that's just how they cook their pasta -- and nothing was adjusted. At that point, there wasn't much else to do. We didn't even bother with dessert. Between the underwhelming food and the unwillingness to address the issue, it just didn't live up to expectations -- especially after seeing how beautiful the space is and how great the service started off. We probably didn't need the fried Mozzarella but that was tasty. Lombata Marsala was sweet and tender even with the bone in. Potatoes were quite fancy and tasted good. Both petite and ribeye steaks were cooked perfectly, those were very tender. Fettuccine I was not able to sample but it looked great with plenty of sauce. Desert was a must have. Cheesecake was good but there needed to be more of the strawberry sauce and maybe a tad less sugar. My favorite dessert was the gellato in the chocolate ball. The margarita tasted smokey (some people love that) and the cucumber spritz was the best drink hands down. They have a set menu everyday but Saturday that is a good deal. I could actually look past that but then when the bill came and my to-go order of a wedge salad $14 with a side of chicken was up charged to Chicken Milanese (an entree) $28. It's beautiful inside and I was greeted immediately with a smile and kindness! I'm thinking it was the owner who was very welcoming and showed me the private dining area they have available for booking. We wanted to treat a friend for his birthday to a place where we had yet to experience. It was a very relaxing and quiet lunch for our table of 4. When I had made reservations I mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. They provided a candle and had stenciled "happy birthday" on his dessert plate. Customer service was very prompt and attentive. Our glasses were always full! The food is flavorful and exquisite! Our table wanted to try a good variety, so we all decided on their $40 menu special that includes a choice of appetizer, entree and dessert from a set menu. It was difficult to choose. Ultimately 3 of us went for the surf and turf which included steak and shrimp, mashed potatoes and asparagus. My friends from Yelp took me here for my birthday. (They're wonderful.) This used to be Burton's Grill, but it looks like they've remodeled it quite a bit since then. It looks very nice. We all ordered the lunch combo which gives you three courses for only $40 I ordered the mozzarella stick, the surf and turf combo, and the cheesecake. The food was so good! The steak was cooked perfectly. I loved all of it. Our server was very nice and very attentive. I would love to go back. If you plan on going, go for lunch! What a beautiful Valentine Day I had today celebrating my mother's birthday with mini-me. We got mani-pedi's as well as she got a waxing. Then we walked down to Gaston's for a little noshing with wine. Yes, mini-me has seen pictures of my mother, but I do not have a picture of my mother holding her youngest grandchild. This spot was on my list for a while and I finally decided to come here to celebrate a work milestone with my family, and it couldn't have been a better choice. I had reserved a table online and only realized on they way that there is a dress code. My husband was in a tshirt and dickies shorts so I gave the place a call and they said it wouldn't be a problem. We were seated right away. And the thing that was apparent immediately is that the service was going to be genuinely impeccable and it was. The ambience is nice, it's clear they are trying to be just a little bit upscale, the bar area seems to be the spot for the locals. The menu offers a solid lineup of Italian classics and a nice steak selection. The server walks you through specials as well but tbh I prefer written things and hence rarely order the specials. I had scoped out the wine list ahead of time, but I ended up going for my usual aperol spritz and it was excellent (truth be told I had two). I went with the risotto which was perfectly cooked. My husband had steak and it absolutely melted in his mouth. The food was really well done. What really stood out though was the service. The server was so patient with my son! Everything flowed smoothly, dishes and drinks came out at the right time and every interaction was just right. At the end they surprised me with a sweet little congratulatory dessert. My wife liked the restaurant more than I did! Gaston's restaurant is located where Le Yuca restaurant used to be. The good- The atmosphere was upscale and classy. The service was outstanding. The house Cabernet was surprisingly very good The appetizer of fried shrimp had the perfect crunch and great flavor. My wife's Cesar salad (which I tried) had great homemade dressing. My wife's entree (which I also tried) Rigatoni Bolognese was very flavorful. My wife's chocolate cake for dessert was very good Even my wife decaf coffee that came out in a French press was excellent. The not so good- The bread and bruschetta were boring - the tomatoes needed to be a more spreadable consistency. My 8 oz Prime Sirloin was a little tough. Flavor was just ok. I would definitely try a different cut next time. The mashed potatoes and Veges that came with were just ok- My NY style cheesecake dessert was just not good. Very nice place but one of the meals was not as good as we thought it should be. First the carpaccio was a very appetizer. The Risotto al Porcini (Risotto with porcini mushroom) was excellent and a must try. It was nice and cheesy. The Chicken Parmigiana was disappointing! It's a standard Italian dish and we were surprised that it was dry, to include the pasta. Not sure if this a one-off because everything else was fantastic. This includes the Lava cake we had for dessert. The ambience is very nice. We were surprised as soon as we walked in... we thought "fancy." There were beautiful pictures of Italy and the staff looked great. There's a beautiful bar, where we sat because we didn't have reservations. So, make reservations! Focaccia - Toasted flat bread with a fresh tomato, bruschetta-like topping. Fresh and tasty. Appetizer platter - This was upsold to us by the server. It had a good variety of items on there which I enjoyed, including big shrimp that was lightly breaded, a variety of fried seafood, fried zucchini, steak tips, and meatballs. It was quite pricey though at $78 a platter. Lobster & linguini - lobster tail was smaller than I hoped but cooked well and tasty. I didn't notice much of the scampi sauce until I flipped over the shell. The linguini was in a red sauce that was nothing to write home about. I was hoping for some cherry tomatoes but there weren't any on my dish. It was an okay dish, but with other options on the menu I don't think I would order it again. Tiramisu - It was fine but tasted more like cake. I would pick something else on the dessert menu next time. There were good opinions from my party on: chicken scallopini, veal marsala, New York steak. I thought the arrabbiata sauce on the fruitti di mare pasta was way tastier than the red sauce on the lobster & linguini dish. We came for an early Valentine's Day dinner. We made reservations but when we arrived, it wasn't too busy yet. We were seated near the bar, which was great because we had our baby with us who slept the whole time. There is a team of servers who bring food and picks up empty plates for you so it was all seamless. There was a special menu for the holiday where you could do a 3 course meal or order off of the regular menu. The drinks and food came out quickly. While staying in VA Beach I wanted to get away from the places at the beach and try something a little more local and after reading all the rave reviews about this place, I came here for dinner on a Thursday night. I made a reservation for just me and when I got there they were moderately busy, but I chose to sit at the bar, since I was solo. The bartender was great, very personable, friendly, and very helpful in describing the menu and ensuring his guests were all well-taken care of. Their menu is loaded with many interesting and plenty unique Italian dishes. Not only steak, as their name indicates, but also pastas and other Italian specialties. Their soup on the day I visited was pasta fagioli, so I got a bowl and it was really good... loaded with all the typical items and tasty. Their table bread was a small order of their focaccia, which resembled more of a naan thickness, look, texture, and taste... But I'm not complaining, it was really good and tasted great when dipped in the accompanying tomatoes and EVOO. My entrée consisted of their Chicken Farcito. When I asked the bartender what he thought of it, he said it was amazing and he wasn't lying! The flavors of the filling and the sauce worked very well with the chicken. The potato served with it was incredible and the asparagus was awesome. It all came together so nicely - definitely something to try! Since I was tossing between getting this and getting their Pappardelle Meatballs I ordered the Pappardelle Meatballs to go to enjoy as lunch the next day. That was also very nice! The meatballs were flavorful and the texture was perfect. I still find it a tough decision to have to decide between the two. Save room for dessert, their Zabaglione was excellent! Finally, my father-in-law's 82nd birthday was the event. We booked at 6:45 reservation and asked for a nice, quiet table bc we had our 6 month old. We were given just that, a spacious spot at the back of the bar area by the patio doors. Perfect. Everyone was friendly and our server, Ian, was excellent. It took us a while to order bc we got drinks and had questions and Ian had two other large parties nearby, but he was great and finally, about 45 minutes later we had our orders in. Fortunately the food was quick and our starter wedge salads came out within 5-10 minutes. They were a great portion size with fresh, delicious ingredients and a generous portion of cheese and toppings. I love a good wedge. This was tops. My husband chose the Wagyu Bolognese and I had the Flounder Francese. Both were good. Mine was served egg-watered and lightly fried in a butter/lemon sauce with scalloped potatoes and delicious and large portion of cooked spinach. Portion size was generous and the food was delicious. My father-in-law ordered the Chicken Parmesan and the portion was HUGE. Easily shareable for a couple. It also happened to be one of the best Chicken park dishes I've ever had. Will def. be coming back for that one. While here, we browsed the Happy Hour menu and it's excellent with tons of drinks and food so we plan to come back and give that a try sometime. Our baby got very fussy for the final 20 minutes or so (bed time) but we wanted to get my father-in-law a dessert for his birthday which they made very cute with a small candle and "Happy Birthday" element. He chose carrot cake and it was delicious. They have a very large dessert menu with lots of options. French press coffee was excellent. Gaston's almost great but a solid good. Walking in I was pleasantly impressed with the upscale decor and ambiance, definitely a nice location for a date out. Our waiter was quick to get our drinks and food ordered and had a very warm and pleasant demeanor. I was less than impressed with the cocktail experience, for an upscale restaurant they should have known how to make a sidecar. My second favorite whiskey sour is a classic cocktail that they couldn't deliver well. So I turned to wine which was ok. They had a nice selection by the bottle but by the glass the variety was lacking. Appetizer choices were ok but again for an upscale Italian restaurant I would have expected a charcuterie option that was missing. The main course options looked exciting and creative on the menu but again they couldn't deliver a great experience. I had the pesto which lacked flavor, my guest had the veal which was tasty and a large portion size. His dish also had a side of pasta that tasted like it was just warmed up and not made fresh. My daughter dined in for a work event and I had takeout. I had the lobster scampi with marinara sauce and cheese cake. The pasta was very bland. It looked like it should be flavorful, but NO, it absolutely wasn't!! I even tried to fix it up at home, but it just wasn't working. The sauce had a tart/sour taste to it. I don't think I'll have that again. My daughter didn't like the way the lobster smelled so she couldn't eat it unfortunately . The cheesecake was plain, but because I'm extra, I added pecans and caramel. The cheese cake had good flavor, I'm just not a plain cheese cake kinda girl. The toppings I added elevated it. Because the prices are more expensive for an upscale experience, I expected the food to be better to match the price. Unfortunately I don't think I'd like to try anything else. The restaurant was decorated tastefully for Christmas and it felt as if we were in Italy with the screens that pictured Florence and Venice. I received a friendly welcome entering the restaurant by 2 nicely dresses hostesses. I knew it was going to be a great meal. The decor of the restaurant throughout is elegant, modern, and spacious. With respect to many patrons, I choose not to take pictures. However, this will not be my only visit. From the selected menu, I had the Veal Marsala, flavorful tender with a light sauce. Finally! Gaston's fills VB's void for an exquisite premium dining experience. (There have are a few attempts, but only two or three others that come close to getting it right). Know up front that it's not inexpensive, but the quality of the food, service and atmosphere is worth it. Also...while not a formal atmosphere, proper dress and conduct is at a much higher standard than most VB restaurants. The menu is expansive without being overwhelming. I went with the lobster special, which was a whole lobster along with clams, mussels, and calamari served over pasta with a light butter/garlic/lemon sauce. INCREDIBLE!!! Other family members had steaks that were cooked perfectly and melted like butter. We were celebrating a pair of birthdays in the family and the personal touches by our server and a visit by the owner really made the night extra special. "Gaston's", more like Trashston's... first off I ordered a steak for 40 dollars and it tasted like doodoo. Store bought steak is way better, not to mention the audacity to charge me 10 dollars up charge for French fries and they gave us refills and didn't tell us it would be charged. They also charged my homeboy 15 DOLLARS FOR MEATBALLS. The staff kept side eyeing us. When my home girl ordered chicken and broccoli her broccoli was cold and soggy. We've been here quite a few times and always spend a fair amount. but tonight will be the last time. The service is fine and friendly enough, though the owner was in house and appeared to stop by every table except ours... we were the only non-white family in the restaurant, but perhaps he had other reasons for not checking on us. (Maybe bc we were one of the groups not in line with the "dress code," bc my elderly father is really self conscious about his recent hair loss and doesn't want to remove his hat?) At any rate, it wasn't busy, but we were squeezed into a small couple of tables a bit tight for the size of our party - and the main course took an additional 30 mins to come out once we were completely done with our appetizers. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't help matters. The medium rare sirloin was closer to rare (barely seared on the outside like an ahi tuna) and the cowboy ribeye was oddly tough and chewy, with a surprising amount of tendon for the cut (see photo). Gratuity was added at 20% and brought us to $700 for this underwhelming meal. Oh and be warned - they do charge you $13 if you ask for extra bread. Between the average food at premium prices and the overt disinterest from the owner, there's not much incentive to continue giving our business to this place. It's disappointing, it seemed like such a promising establishment when it first opened. But I guess they're doing well enough to treat some customers like 2nd class citizens now. read more

So happy we decided to go to Gaston's with friends. As soon as we entered we were welcomed by a very pleasant young lady who showed us to a very good table. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a happy feeling. We ordered appetizers which we all enjoyed. The mussels, the calamari and the Burrta. Entrees included the Shrimp Alfredo , the Flounder, Clams with wine sauce with pasta, NY Sirloin with lobster tail. All were delicious! Our server, Sierra was delightful! She made good suggestions and kept our sparkling water full along with our wine glasses too! Outstanding service, great food and a friendly atmosphere made for a great evening! We love the atmosphere and all of the Italy decor...reminds us of our Italy trips! The food and cocktails are always great, and the service is impeccable...particularly Bobby at the bar! Bobby remembered us after only one previous visit 3 months ago! Last night, I enjoyed a center-cut pork chop marinated in Bourbon and Vanilla for 24 hours! Gaston and the staff are very welcoming.
