I should have read into the reviews before committing to get a cake here. They call me 15 min before my pickup time for a bday cake order placed days ago to let me know they are late on the order and to show up an hour later. Here it is an hour later and the order is still not ready. Hopefully the cake is worth it because the service isn't. Well for the update - the top layer was great but the bottom one wasn't. Carrot cake was the top layer and was moist, bottom layer was white cake and was super dry. I'll update my rating from one to two stars. read more

Petit fours... I repeat PETIT FOURS!! They are divine!! I'm usually a chocolate person but the white on white petit fours are food of the gods good. Live another day to eat them good. Drive hours to get them good. OMG yes I'll go to the event with the crazies in your family good!!! These are NOT your standard petit fours - for one - I have never seen such HUGE petit fours - they're more like individual serving cakes surrounded in sugar overload icing!! And moist! So MOIST - the icing just holds all that moist decadent cake in place! Most of their other items are fair... some are sub par... they look pretty good but... hmmm... they're just not excellent. Examples are - cheese sticks tasty but too greasy and a little too spicy... Some of the cookies (oatmeal, peanut butter, etc) are good but for the most part you could do better at most grocery store chains. But (and I hate to repeat myself) get the freaking petit fours!! Seriously - giant cake heaven in a little personal size. Ask in advance and they'll customize the decoration - adorable with a pink or blue booties for a baby shower, ring for wedding shower or just different colors or kinds of flowers - you could even go plain and add a trinket from the hobby store! But seriously - don't complain about their food if you didn't try the !!!!!!WHITE PETIT FOURS!!!!! Did you? Did you try the petit fours? Are you in a sugar coma coz you ate 3? You get it now, right? Yes! Share them! Tell everyone!! Bring them to your next event and become the hero! I also highly recommend the cream cheese pockets!!! OMGood!!! But the petit fours here will transport you to a distant land- maybe the French countryside, or a swanky New York ballroom in the fifties. They are just stunning. I never write reviews, but my experience at Stein's was so bad today that I had to share it with others. I called yesterday to place an order to be picked up this morning at 7:30am. Their website and door say they open at 7:30. I arrived at 7:30, and they were not open. I knocked; no response. I waited; no one came. Finally, at 7:37, I saw someone in the back, and I was literally kicking the door to make enough noise for them to notice me and open up. The employee disappeared, and a couple minutes passed before a woman, presumably the owner, came to the door and unlocked it. She was not in a hurry, and did not apologize for the fact that I was outside waiting after the time they were supposed to be open. It was almost like I was annoying her by being there. I go in and tell her that I am here to pick up an order. I tell her my first name. She goes in the back for a long time, comes back out with nothing. Asks for my last name. Goes back in the back for a long time. Comes back out and says that they're boxing up my order. WHICH MEANS THAT MY ORDER WASN'T EVEN READY. I called ahead to prevent all of this from happening, and it was a total failure. I did finally get my order, but I was at the bakery for 20 minutes for a transaction that should have been 2 minutes, and there was never an acknowledgement of any faults on their part. At one point, another customer came in, and no one came out to greet her. She finally asked me if I had been helped, and we had a conversation about how the customer service there is terrible. This is actually the second time that I have been to Stein's at 7:30am and had them not be open. I called ahead to try to prevent that this time, with no luck. I will absolutely never go back because of the terrible customer service that experience every time I'm there. read more

I ordered some gender reveal cupcakes from here and brought them into work today.... well when I bit into mine there was NO color inside!! 2 out of 12 had color.... just two. One had faint color like they tried to add it in. On top of that, the cupcakes were dry and the icing was either store bought or from a powdered mix. On the plus side, a dozen cupcakes and 1 petite four was like $10.25. I won't be back, but it's nice to know I didn't waste too much money on my non gender - gender reveal cupcakes. read more

Stein's Bakery has been my go to bakery for delicious cakes, cupcakes and baked goods. They did my 40th birthday party cake and it was a huge hit! It was white cake with buttercream frosting. The layers were moist and delicious. They were easy to work with and gave lots of ideas. The order was placed two weeks before the event and I didn't have to worry about it again. When I graduated from UT I went straight to Steins to get a graduation cake made but am thoroughly disappointed. We pointed to a cake they have displayed on the wall in the shop (meaning they have made said cake before and should have been experienced and known the proper way to make it) and said I wanted that 3D Bevo cake exactly and said that I didn't mind if the body was made out of styrofoam or Rice Krispies and the lady said they were going to do the ENTIRE CAKE in real cake so I went along with it and paid $225 for the cake. (Note that my mother had called earlier and told them the cake and asked questions and for a price and she was told $175 but when I went in they told me $280 and I said absolutely not and called my mom and got her to talk with them and they brought it to $225 which is still higher than originally quoted). The day comes and we get the cake and on the drive home even though not going far and driving super slow and avoiding any bumps, the horns start falling off. So we unattached the horns (this was made of styrofoam and super easy to take off) but then the ENTIRE head starts falling off. We get it home and tried to save the poor cake but there was a metal piece supporting (ha) the head making us not able to put anything through the cake to support it further. I call Steins and they tell us TO BRING THE CAKE BACK AND THEY WOULD FIX IT, AS IF WE HAVE TIME FOR THAT VEFORE THE PARTY STARTS!!!! So moral of the story if you want something intricate either DONT GO TO STEINS OR HAVE it DELIVERED (which wasn't offered to us but we would have paid for)! read more

I have always loved Steins until this past Saturday. I ordered my husbands 50th birthday cake (chocolate with chocolate fudge icing) earlier in the week and went to pick it up Saturday morning. After I told the person my order for pick up, I could see him walking around the whole bakery looking for my order and asking people about it. He then disappeared for a few minutes and came out with a cake. It had chocolate icing on it so I thought maybe he found it. However, when we cut into it at the party, we discovered it was a white cake with regular icing that tasted like Carmel. I wonder if they just found a chocolate looking cake and passed it off to me. I feel like I'm missing out on what all the cool people are getting. Stein's was a total let down for me. My dear husband picked up a package of assorted goodies to bring home to his sweet pregnant wife (ME!) because you know, every pregnant woman needs her sugar. Chocolate chip cookies, thumbprint cookies, iced sugar cookies (for our toddler) and a big loaf of banana bread... you name it, he got it. I'm so disappointed to say I didn't like any of it. The chocolate chip cookies and thumbprints were hard and flavorless. I nibbled off my little girl's smiley face cookie and it had no taste at all. This morning I tried the banana bread. I'm pretty sure it's pound cake with added nuts and banana flavoring. While it's very moist, it's also too sweet and reminds me of the stuff you get out of the freezer section from Sara Lee. I am disappointed I am having to write this review. We have enjoyed ordering from this bakery for years. I know it is "old school", so I drove from Frisco to Dallas to order in person. (They write your order on a piece on paper...not even an order form). I ordered a cake for a birthday cake to celebrate an 80th birthday celebration. I looked through their sample photo book, picked a cake and placed our order. I called 3 days before & 1 day before to ensure the order would be ready on time as I was operating on a tight time frame and it was a 60 min. round trip to pick up the cake. I arrived at the pick up time. The fellow behind the counter stated they did not have a record of my order & there was no cake for me. I insisted he recheck... he went to the back THREE times (at my insistence) to recheck. I requested he have someone else check... after 20 minutes, the cake was located. It looked NOTHING like the photo I had chosen from their sample book (it was white and neon pink, as opposed to pastel pink... with a vastly different design pattern). It tasted bland and very dry - like it was 2 weeks old. Steins used to be our "go to" for special celebration cakes. Never again. So sad. read more

First, Stein's Bakery is a Dallas Institution. It's been around since the 1940's. Many of my friends have always ranted & raved about Stein's over the years. I finally see what the fuss is all about. My daughter in-law brought a two layer Chocolate Birthday Cake for my son's Birthday & we all agreed that it was one of the Best Chocolate Cakes we'd ever eaten. Perfect Cake Perfect Frosting. Ummmm I'd like to give Thanks to Deno for now passing her addiction to cheese pockets on to me - I've already passed it on to others since I discovered these little bits of heaven yesterday. I had seen the cheese pockets review and for some reason just never realized that Stein's is like across the street from my office almost - until I saw the sign over the weekend - and then I was sucked in. I tried to resist, but once I re-read the cheese pockets review I knew I had to make a stop. I popped over after work yesterday and told the lady behind the counter I had to try a cheese pocket. She knew exactly what I was referring to and asked me how many - I guessed 4. she put them in a cute little box and handed them over. I was surprised at how much that little box weighed! I paid for them - $3.88! for 4! yay! As soon as I got home - I started eating one and OMG! This little thing was delicious - and pretty much EXACTLY what deno described! It was super hard not to eat more than one, but I knew that I should share so I held out. Since yesterday I've given one to my fiance, and split one between 2 of my co-workers annnnnnnd I ate another one myself. Seriously for less than $1 - you have to try these things. read more

Stein's Bakery is partially responsible for the fact that I cannot wear my favorite jeans anymore. Obviously they force feed me their wares, there is no other explanation. But seriously, I have to stop myself from stopping in here all the time. Stupid delicious cheese pockets and petit fours so close to my job. They sell all of the normal bakery items, cakes, cupcakes, bread and I always see people buying cheese straws but haven't tried them. I can't cheat on the cheese pockets. I don't know how to describe what exactly they are, sort of a danish with cheesecake in the middle? I don't know, I just want to marry them and have fat little cheese pocket babies with one, is that so wrong? Their prices are reasonable and the people that work there are always nice. I didn't know this place was here until my brother and I drove into this strip mall where we would be having lunch. I seriously wanted to try everything here! I think I could have, but I just got a few things. First thing that caught my eye was pound cake. Yes, pound cake. I was raised on pound cake, so this brought back memories of my dad and me having some cake and milk when I was younger. Their cake tasted ok. It wasn't dry, but I wish it were a bit more moist. I also got a variety of their cookies.Their cookies are the type that are small and crisp. I don't remember what it was called, but I liked the ones with the coconut in it. I got some cupcakes as well. If you "must" have fresh cupcakes then come here, but the cupcakes I got were just kind of ok. The chocolate cupcakes seemed a little bland and the vanilla cupcakes were pretty decent. The icing was ok, nothing too spectacular. I think I would have rather had some Hostess Cupcakes. One of Dallas' oldest bakeries, or so they say. I'm totally addicted to what we will call cheese pockets. I do think that's what they call them at Stein's as well. I had a friend who used to get these at his work and bring them to me at lunch. He refused to tell me where they came from. I went crazy trying bakery after bakery until he finally caved and told me about Stein's Bakery. The cheese pocket is shaped like a kolache, but doesn't taste like one. Imagine a kolache made from sweet crescent dough with a piece of cheesecake stuffed inside and topped with powdered sugar, condensed milk glaze. THAT'S what a cheese pocket tastes like. They also carry an assortment of breakfast pastries and cookies. I've tried something new each time, cherry danish, gingerbread, buttery cookies...it's all been good but nothing to rival the cheese pocket. The cakes are also good. The best is the chocolate mousse cake. It's almost too rich to eat, but I suffer through it every time. They are almost always busy, and not open on Sunday. They are located on Preston opposite the freeway from Valley View Mall. It's a strip shopping center. They are located in the island in front of the Terry Costa outlet. Stein's claims to be the oldest bakery in Dallas, with their doors opening in 1940. I believe it, because some of the stuff in their bakery tastes like it has been there for about 70 years. The cookies were without a doubt, the worst cookies I have ever bought from a bakery in my life. They were so stale I wouldn't eat them, my dog wouldn't eat them, even Cookie Monster wouldn't eat them...I know I tried to push them off on him. All he would say is "Cookie Monster no like rock hard cookies, me rather eat Big Bird's toe nails." Otherwise, things were OK. Sticky buns were a little dry. Turnover tasted like it was from the grocery store. Pretty uneventful. The Nut Roll was a solid 4 star item though, worth eating again. Basically, you just go there for the Cheese Rolls. For some reason, I had it in my head that there were going to be a savory cheddar cheese or something, but they are actually a little roll thick with sweet cream cheese. They weigh about 5 lbs each but they are really the only thing I would go back for. Well, maybe I would go back for cookies if I needed to re-shingle my roof. read more

Back then I think they were only .25 cents. So worth taking the risk! Since then we have ordered petit fours, cakes, cookies...everything needed to make for a wonderful party. And you can't go in there to pick up with out also buying one bag of the cheese straws. It's all good! Then, if you love someone, buy them a Stein's birthday cake to celebrate their next full revolution around the sun. I've been getting a Stein's birthday cake every year of my life that it was possible. My mother even brought me one in Germany once. I might have a problem. The cake is fluffy without a lot of air bubbles. The icing is incredible...I dream about it. The lemon and raspberry fillings are where it's at. My cake always has red roses and violets on it. Cupcakes: Don't bother. Get the petit fours instead! Cookies: Waste of money unless you like dry powdery cookies. Cheese Pockets: GET LIKE 50 OF THESE, SERIOUSLY. They aren't fancy schmancy but they are close to my favorite thing in the world. This shocked the hell out of me since I dislike cheesecake. Various fruit pastries: ohhhh mannnn, these aren't artful or picturesque, but they just melt in your mouth and you should DEFINITELY also get 50 of these. Petit Fours: soooo good! The vanilla ones are much better than the chocolate ones though. They are so sugary and moist and buttery and just perfect with NO yucky distracting raspberry filling like so many others always add! Their normal breads are also very good! I've tried the poppy seed buns and one other type that I can't remember and both were really soft and nice. read more
