I never knew Stella San Jac existed before yesterday. We were looking for a place to go before the gay pride parade and stumbled upon this place on Yelp. The restaurant is attached to the Westin. It's has a classy feel on the inside. Most of the seats were empty. We weren't super hungry, so we just ordered some small plates. The deviled eggs were delicious. Each one had a little piece of bacon on top. The crab cake was good, but I wish it had come with a little more aioli. The biscuits were super yummy and the honey butter they came with were even better. The tops of the biscuits were pretty salty, which I liked. This review is based on two visits: dinner and brunch (note the menus on their website appear to be outdated already in terms of offerings and pricing). 10/13/15 - Dinner: Our table shared a variety of items. As a nice surprise we discovered our delicious cocktails were all at happy hour prices and were half off. I can find no info. regarding their happy hour/times on their website, but on the tuesday evening we visited all our cocktails were half off (a nice surprise when the bill arrived!). Beet chips: Think taro chips, which of course are delicious. But it is the accompanying horseradish dill dip that makes this a MUST try! Deviled eggs: Unique and flavorful due to the bits of sausage in the whipped eggs. #15 biscuits: A tad on the dry side, not the best in town. Kale and Brussels: Delicious with sausage mixed in (so not vegetarian friendly). The Stella burger: Just do yourself a favor and order it. This burger received many oohs and awwwes from our table, even from the vegetarians! The two things making this burger outstanding, aside from the meat quality, is the confit stewed tomatoes and the shoestring onion rings. 10/18/15 - Brunch: Lemon Ricotta Banana Pancakes: Delicious! The folded in bananas and the ricotta cheese makes these pancakes melt in your mouth good. Turkey Omelet: Good, considering a low fat omelet. Modest sized. Hmm... I've been excited to try San Jac for awhile now, and last night I happily had the opportunity. When we arrived there were about three tables with people - the rest of the restaurant was empty. Interesting for a Friday night. We ordered drinks, the avocado salad, and the pork chop w/ brussel sprouts. We were debating between a few starters, but when we asked our server for her recommendation, she said the best starter by far on the menu is the brussel sprouts. ...Okay... we then asked if these recommended sprouts were any different than the sprouts paired with the pork chop. The answer was no, and we were told there are quite a bit of sprouts that come with the entree. So... that's that, no starters to review. The avocado salad was bland. The fried avocados had no seasoning and tasted like they had been fried in old/dirty oil. The pork chop was nice, but the highly recommended brussel sprouts desperately needed salt/dressing/something. The sprouts were roasted, which was nice, but they bordered on burnt. Other notes: We ordered a second round of drinks when the food first arrived to our table, but the drinks didnt get delivered until we had already finished our entire meal. We were unable to cancel the drink order because all servers seemed to have disappeared while we were eating. (We were probably one of two tables in the entire restaurant at this point.) And finally, whatever 'scent' the restaurant/hotel has pumping through the air vents should be toned down. We celebrated my husbands 50th birthday at Stella San Jac. The hostess had the sweetest smile ever. Our server Adrianna, was amazing, attentive and so sweet! Now for the food. Started with oysters 2 ways, the blue points were so fresh and Rockefeller were unique. The lamb meatballs were to die for, with a mint pesto:). Then bone marrow...aka meat butter..superb! Our entree, bone in pork chop was super tender and juicy sitting in a chipotle cream sauce (gotta extra of that stuff!) dessert , a spin on smores chocolate brownie, marshmallow cream and graham crackers. We went here for dinner on a Friday evening with friends because this place was listed as kid-friendly (we had a 4 and 2 year old in tow). We were seated at a large table, which let the kids spread out and doodle/color as we talked and ate. Other than that benefit, however, thIs was a pretty dismal dining experience. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and biscuits (which everyone on yelp seems to be raving about). The Brussels were ok in flavor but totally soggy in texture. I'm pretty sure the jalapeños come straight out of a can. The biscuits were so disappointing!!! They were served cold, and did not hold up in flavor or texture. (I've had far better biscuits at sweet cheeks in Boston!). My partner ordered the scallops, which were ok in flavor, but at $25, the portion was lacking (3 scallops). They were served with a side of greens drenched in a citrus vinaigrette. I ordered a kale & Brussels sprout salad which was mediocre at best. The combination of ingredients (green apple, bacon, cranberries, & manchego) sounded better than it executed (the bacon in particular did not jive here). I am glad I asked for the dressing on the side since it was tasty but creamy. Overall, none of the food stood out nor did it strike me as Southern in flair. All this might be somewhat forgivable, I suppose, were it not for the dismal service of our seemingly friendly but completely disinterested waiter. The restaurant was not full, nor was our order particularly complex. Nevertheless, he managed to forget requests not once, not twice, but THREE times! (An initial order for a glass of wine, a 2nd order of wine from a different person, and finally a coffee that also never made it to the table.) I mean, c'mon. You've got one job here. There was no comp or other attempts to address the gaffe. Unlikely to return a 2nd time. Eddie V's is right across the street--do yourself (& your tastebuds) a favor and go there. read more

The food here is very good but they definitely exploit the fact that they are attached to a hotel and are in the center of the tourist area of Austin. We started dinner with 2 cocktails: the blackberry snowcone and the bourbon/fig jam cocktail called the fig & rose or something or other. I had the blackberry snowcone and I probably wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it would be served with a spoon instead of a straw. It really was a tequila-ey snowcone. Enjoyed it nonetheless but next time, something else. The bourbon drink my BF had was good but it could have been more figgy for my taste. I love figs. Started off with a crab cake appetizer. $17 dollars for one crab cake. Was it delicious? Is the pope Catholic? Does a pimp carry a razor? OF COURSE! But for $17 there should have been 2 of them so we could have shared and had our own. My boyfriend had the diver scallops ($25) and I had a beet salad (much cheaper). Beet salad was OK but nothing to write home about. Needed goat cheese or something to make it more exciting. It was all one note. The diver scallops were good but there were only 4 on the plate with a little BS salad. The scallops were only seared on one side and absolutely dead pale on the other side. They were well cooked but a scallop must be seared on both sides. And for $25 a couple more would have been nice. Who would be full off 4 scallops? No one. Wanted to try the bone marrow appetizer. Easter brunch was a wow here for sure. I wish I had come back many times since. Hopefully when I visit I can hit this place up again. Friends and I wanted somewhere new to try and I had this place bookmarked for a bit so we decided to make a reservation. We ended up being a little late, surprise surprise, but they accommodated us with ease. Their brunch cocktails all sounded amazing, but as soon as I heard bacon bloody mary, I was sold. Every sip had pieces of bacon in it! I ended up getting a second one, it was that good. Another friend got the blackberry snow cone, although it was a teeny messy so when she ordered her 2nd, she opted out of the snowy ice. My other friend got the stella spritzer, because who doesn't love a good prosecco. We ordered the brussels sprouts and deviled eggs (with andouille sausage!) to start. The brussels sprouts were very tasty but not the star in my eyes. Those deviled eggs were salivating! For my meal I ordered the biscuits and gravy which included chorizo and poached eggs. While it was a little greasy, I didn't let that bother me because the spices and combination of the flavors was so yummy! I want to go back and get that same meal again and again. Yelp genuinely surprises me sometimes (particularly in Texas). From my experience, this is a five star place, sitting at 4 stars on here. I would have loved to deduct a star because of a rude hostess, but the quality of the food (and my server) more than made up for it. I came for brunch with my almost-three-year-old who I'd promised waffles. I ordered the short rib grilled cheese, and got a free order of biscuits for checking in on yelp. In one of the best food decisions I've ever made, I swapped the fries with the sandwich for a salad. I thought I'd be getting your run of the mill lettuce tomato onion fare, and was shocked to see a small mound of toppings on romaine. There was grilled corn, pickled jalapenos, cotija(maybe?), thinly sliced onions, and small green tomatoes. It came without dressing, and the combination of ingredients was absolutely perfect without it. The right amount of spice, slight sweetness, and juiciness balanced perfectly. I scarfed the whole thing down before even thinking about tasting anything else. The short rib sandwich was also great, and the biscuits were pure perfection. They were fluffy, layered but soft, with a nice herbal flavor and a great crispness to the outside. They paired wonderfully with the honey butter served at the perfect dipping consistency. The decor is beautiful and the hostess was very sweet. This place is on the ground floor of the Westin, attached to the hotel, which gives you access to the rooftop pool and bar. If you want to wow your date, take them to the rooftop. The hostess can take you there. Apparently it is the tallest rooftop pool lounge in Austin. As for the food, they're heavier on the salt side. My biscuit appetizers were quite salty and so were my $27 scallops. read more

Except for the noise level it is ridiculous in the lobby and the band that was playing in the restaurant didn't help the noise level. We asked to be sweated as far from the band as possible. It was a little quieter towards the back. The server came by to get us waters and I placed the #16 biscuit order right then because they are supposed to be really good. Ended up placing two orders since there was 3 per order and we had a party of 4. The server cam back and got our drink orders. We also ordered the crispy Brussels sprouts, bacon & egg, beet chips, and a side of grits. The chips were good but weren't very crispy. The biscuits were alright to me, I like light and fluffy biscuits and these were more on the crispy side. The Brussels sprouts were good, the bacon and egg was awesome, but tiny when sharing with 4 people. We didn't order another one since we all ordered main entrees. The grits were amazing! I could eat a whole bowl of that! We also got the gulf shrimp & lump crab roll, the pan seared chicken, the stella burger and a Cesar salad. The chicken was the best thing, it's strange to order a chicken dish like this going to dinner, but it was as moist as chicken could get. The outside was crispy. It was perfect. The burger was okay, it was juicy, the fries weren't anything special a little cold actually and didn't have any seasoning or salt. A little hard to salt cold fries though. The crab roll was good the seasoning is powerful. Hands down the chicken was the best. We got the strawberry shortcake and the chocolate smore cake for dessert. The strawberry had the same biscuits from the appetizer and it was too dry and crunchy for me to enjoy as a dessert. The s'more cake was amazing! Very very decadent though, it comes layered in a mini jar with graham crackers. The only downfall is this place is in a hotel, so you either have to valet for high dollar $20 for 0-2 hours! Or hope to find parking, usually not bad to find street parking in downtown Austin on non-weekend nights. I would recommend and come back for the chicken, grits and the s'more dessert. read more

My friend and I picked this place, expecting to order from the breakfast/ brunch menu. First off... finding parking was atrocious. Finally get in.. very nice place. When we arrived at 12, it was empty. The host asked if we had reservations. Then acted like he had to look for an empty table.. they were all empty. Which at this point I should've taken a hint. We look down at the very few choices and notice, no waffles, no pancakes! But the typical fried avocado salad and the "Stella burger". The waitress was like "yeah we stop serving at 11am soooo yeah". The waitress seemed a bit awkward to me. Even asked how our food was, which we clearly haven't touched yet. Back to the food... the burger was as though they cooked it was cooked in a pool of oil... then sat in a bath... of oil. GREASY would be an understatement. How do you mess up a burger? You named it after your restaurant. I wouldn't expect much from the rest of the menu. I felt like I was swallowing oil after each bite. Fries didn't seem so fresh. We had a group of 10 on a Sunday. This is obviously a challenge to a lot of establishments but Stella San Jac was unphased and had us seated within 10 minutes. Food was delicious! The deviled eggs, the biscuits, the smoked salmon. Really tasty! I got the short rib grilled cheese and thought the waitress said it was delicious, it was lack luster. The three stars is because the server was pretty inattentive, was not willing to go above and beyond for anything, wanted to charge an extra $5 for requesting an extra plate so two of our guests could share something (not because they were being cheap but because we ordered 8 appetizers). I wanted to find dinner within walking distance from my hotel downtown and I'm glad I settled on this place. The deviled egs were DELICIOUS. I had their signature burger for my entree and it was very tasty as well. The reason I have to settle on 4 stars instead of 5 is that the portions of both the deviled eggs and the burger were a little small for the price IMO. Service & atmosphere were great so the food tasted great so I really have nothing bad to say. As I said, I thought the portions were a little small for the price but not too bad. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, with a side of bacon and iceT. First, whoever approved this menu is a fool. They don't list/offer sides of anything! The side of bacon I ordered is off menu. This means you have to imagine what you might want to accompany your meal, ask the server, hope they have it and then inquire about the price. The rule of thumb is to avoid hotel restaurants if you want good food. The reason being, they will cut all corners imaginable even if it drastically lowers the quality. The restaurant is an after thought relative to the hotel. I saw all of the wonderful glowing reviews and thought maybe this place is an exception, NOPE. The rule holds true. When they brought the food out, I know I had a weird look on my face, because the dish looked so similar to the third worst biscuits and gravy in town IMO, at the corner on Congress. Owned by the same company, as it turns out. Biscuits and gravy Bright orange pool of chipotle gravy. I personally don't find chipotle seasoning appealing, has sort of a body Oder smell, like certain Indian foods. Wouldn't have ordered it IF, IF, IF it were stated on the menu. Eggs were cooked in something other than butter, no idea what. Bacon was cold, nice size portion though. The only reason this wasn't a one star review, the staff was friendly. I sat at the bar. Very cool atmosphere. Trendy and fresh. The food is pretty good but the service is exceptional. On one of my lunch visits I ordered the chicken sandwich with the cole slaw on the side. Well they not only removed the slaw but they didnt put any of the sauce on the chicken either. It was dry and pretty bland. I asked the server if it was supposed to come with a sauce and he had said no. I could have sworn it said it did on the menu though but went ahead and ate it as is. Near the end of the meal the server came back and apologized... he said he was wrong and that there was supposed to be a sauce. I was amazed at his honesty... he was already in the clear but chose to acknowledge the mistake and said he'd speak to the manager to see if anything could be done about it. So not only did he acknowledge the mistake, but he also went and informed his boss of it. Wow, it doesn't get much better than that. Was fortunate enough to be sent to South by Southwest for work for four days. Was put up at the Westin, which I hear is about a year old. The hotel is decent, not 5 star but definitely comfortable. I traveled all day Thursday and after checking in, doing a dry run of a presentation, and picking up my pass from the Austin Convention Center, I was spent. Luckily, being a good Yelper, I did my research and found that Stella San Jac has a solid rep and I wasn't disappointed. First, the staff was awesome. I had dinner and breakfast here during my stay and both times the staff made me feel at home. Jordan, the bartender, was terrific. You know how it is when you're traveling alone...it can be awkward as a$s, but Jordan made me feel comfortable. And topping it off, he is from Virginia (me too) and went to Virginia Tech (I'd like for my daughter to go to VT), so we had a lot to talk about. For dinner I knew I wanted the Brussels sprouts with caramelized jalapeños ... Really good! I also had pan roasted chicken with sweet potato mash instead of grits and pan roasted tomatoes. Wow! So good. For breakfast one morning I had an egg white frittata with quinoa, spinach, kale and roasted red pepper. Everything was fantastic. Definitely eat here! read more

The miso glazed black cod was rather bland compared to other restaurants that serve a similar dish. The spicy shrimp pasta and pan seared chicken were respectable. We enjoyed an excellent early dinner before a show at Bass Concert Hall. We had a 5:00 pm reservation and were seated immediately. Thank goodness for valet parking right there, otherwise we would have had a decent walk from parking to the restaurant. We used the Yelp check in to get our appetizer order of biscuits for free, and they were delicious...slightly crunch on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. The honey butter is the perfect compliment to the saltiness of the biscuit. For entrees we had the pan seared chicken with grits (yummy and juicy), the pork chop with Brussel sprouts (pork chop was good, Brussels were delicious), the short rib (fabulous and fall apart tender), and the salad with red fish (fish was excellent, salad was good). Everyone was pleased with their entrees and we shared bites with each other so we could all taste how delicious they were. The presentation of each dish was also lovely. They really pay attention to the look and taste of each dish. Service was great too! We will be back. read more

I'd heard mixed reviews, and normally hotel restaurants don't grab me, but Stella was great! I met a girlfriend there for dinner the other night and we were very pleased. THE SPACE: The décor in both the bar and the restaurant is contemporary and open, with lots of natural light. The lobby area of the hotel is equally inviting, with a living plant wall and comfortable couches so that you can actually sit and enjoy yourself. Very well done hotel. THE SERVER: Back to the restaurant: our server was Jaden, an efficient, funny, and pleasantly laid back young woman. She was extremely helpful and accommodated my special request to leave an ingredient out of a dish due to a food allergy. THE FOOD & DRINK: After ordering very tasty cocktails - a San Jac Lemonade and a Sparkling Watermelon Marg, we started with the beet chips which are served with a dill and horseradish dipping sauce. These were absolutely delicious! I ordered the zucchini quinoa dish as an entree, and my friend ordered a chicken dish served with grilled corn grits. Both were very well presented and seasoned and reasonably portioned. For dessert we split the most delicious form of s'mores I think I've ever had. Essentially you get a dip made of marshmallow and chocolate served with Graham crackers on which to spread the dip. Deelish! We visited on 5/27 at 12:20pm. We got seated within a reasonable time (before 12:50) despite not having reservations with having 6 in our party. The restaurant was about 3/4 full, but we were the only ones waiting. We had drinks when we got seated at our table. Our waitress was friendly and took an appetizer order. We didn't see her again for at least 15- 20 minutes where we finally placed another drink order along with our meals. Approximately another 15 minutes goes by before we receive our drinks and where the waitress wanted clarification for my order. (I'm assuming she hadn't put it in.) At 1:30, we asked about the timeline of our meal and were told another 15 minutes. By 1:40, we had a child breaking down and another one in the bathroom not feeling well due to low blood sugar. I communicated this to the hostess who said she would communicate this to the manager. I watched the hostess go directly to the manager. Another 10 minutes went before we received our food. Not once did the manager look our way or even come over to address or apologize about the wait for our food. Shame on this place for not employing someone at that level who can address customer service issues. After working in the industry myself for years, I was highly disappointed in the service we received and the blatant ignoring of paying customers. We will not be back and felt awful because we had out of town guests where this was our first and only outting in downtown ATX. read more

She was knowledgeable and very polite. What a gem! I come to Austin for business all the time and have frequented many great restaurants, but Stella San Jac is by far one of the best. Not only is the food fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and delicious, the signature cocktails are smooth (try the old-fashioned!). I was a party of one, and Anthony accommodated my desire to try 3 different things in smaller portions, even though this option was not listed on the menu as such. I was able to decompress after a long day in the dimly lit restaurant- very classy and modern - a very cool yet comfortable vibe. Highly recommend! I was in a time crunch and needed to grab a bite before I hit the road back to Houston. The hostess (Natalie) and server (Rebecca) were over-the-top friendly in helping me getting a quick, delicious, and health breakfast before I headed home. Had dinner here with a good friend of mine I haven't see in awhile and everything was perfect. From the waiter who was attentive and knowledgable about all the cocktails and food to the lighting, music, and yummy dessert. We started out with the fabulous #16 biscuits that were recommended to us by our waiter. For dinner she had the quinoa and zucchini dish and I had the pan seared chicken. Finally, for dessert we each had the s'more cake. Delicious, but very sweet. (As you can imagine) It was our first time dining here and they did not disappoint. 5 stars.
