They are very dense and filling so don't over indulge or you might be too full to eat your entree. I got the lobster macaroni and cheese and it was cheesy heaven. My one complaint was the lobster had a very strange taste. I ended up just eating the noodles and was pleased enough. The decor, lighting, and style is very nice. Update: I had brunch at Stella before we left Austin and OMG. The shrimp and grits were recommended to me by my waitress Brittany. They did not disappoint. We ate breakfast this morning. Two of us ordered breakfast that came with toast but did not receive toast. We order an order of biscuits plus an extra but only received the order of three. Once we brought it to their attention, they brought the fourth biscuit. My eggs were salted but I don't put salt on my eggs. Prices are high compared to the quality of food and service. I love the decor here... It creates a great feel and we've come here for happy hour and had some killer cocktails. We came for brunch recently and the only reason I'd take off a star is because the French "toast" actually is more like a cake... Not bread. It's good, but if you're in the mood for real French toast your craving may go unsatisfied. The other things we had were great, just super rich. This is a great place for a sit-down lunch or dinner in the downtown area! Menu is an array of American classics that are served just a bit fancier. I tried the shrimp/crab roll with rosemary chips and it was delicious. I especially liked how well the roll itself complemented the contents inside - it was buttery, warm and the right level of soft vs. crispy on the edges. We started off with the biscuits, which were delightfully salty and an appropriate amount of flakiness. It's not a place I would come to regularly because I found the food to be a bit heavy overall, but it's a solid option if you're looking for something casually upscale and easy! Made a reservation for my wife and I to have dinner here on a Saturday night at 8:00. When we arrived, the back 2/3 of the restaurant were full and the front 1/3 was completely empty. We were told that we would need to wait to be seated as there were no tables available. I asked about the tables in the front and was made aware that they were short-staffed and didn't have the servers available for that area. We went to the bar and ordered a drink and were seated about 10 minutes later. We ordered a bottle of wine (wine list is okay - lacks red Zinfandels completely, but overall is acceptable and better than most) and then an order of the #16 biscuits to start. The biscuits come with 3 biscuits and a whipped honey butter. Outstanding. 10/10 would recommend. For our main course we ordered the lobster mac 'n cheese and the short rib dinners. The short ribs were braised and came with mashed sweet potatoes and apple slaw. Delicious and would give it around an 8/10, as it was a bit cold by the time it got to the table. The lobster mac 'n cheese was outstanding. However, the disappointment here is rooted in the choice of proteins for the dish. They served it with 2 medium-sized pieces of lobster, which was "eh" for me. The mac 'n cheese itself (the pasta and sauce part of the dish) was absolutely phenomenal and the highlight of the meal for me. If I could make a recommendation, it would be to offer a short rib mac 'n cheese option, which would be an absolute knock-out dish for Stella on the menu. We also ordered a side of brussel sprouts, which were also very good. Knocked one star off for the food taking an excessively long time to come out and also for the short ribs being cold upon delivery. But besides those small flukes, meal was great, our server was fantastic, and I would recommend to anyone for a nice date night or dinner in Downtown. Enjoy! read more

Came here during a quiet time after lunch and found the food to be absolutely spectacular. Maybe I was in a good food groove or whatever, but had a couple of dishes that were in the "best of" category. The least awesome were the deviled eggs which were presented like three little weebles with top hats. Way too salty and a bit dry, but had a lot of potential. The "Egg and Bacon" was completely Larrylicious. Wow. Unexpectedly savory and mouth watering. It was a huge piece of pork belly that was crispy and succulent and it's porkological intensity was on the Pole Position as far as Larry is concerned. It was meaty without being overly fatty and Larry could tell that the kitchen team had experience wit 'da swine. Man, that was good. Served with a fried quail egg on top with a runny yolk that joined the meat in perfect harmony. Accompanied on the plate by grits with roasted corn that were just about the best non-breakfast grits Larry has ever had. Oh, and there was a ribbon of barbecue sauce as well which made them grits grittastic. I could have eaten a bowl of them by myself. They should ship them around the world - I'd place a standing order. And then, the biscuits. Ohhh the biscuits. Three two-bite super dog flaky and delicious biscuits served in a tee-tiny cast iron skillet. They were taller than wide, which Larry has never seen before and the surface to fluff ratio was so perfect that every bite conjured up a mouthfeel that was both crunchy and fluffy at the same time. Marvelous. Served with not enough honey butter, but Larry would have jonesed for some clotted cream or homemade marmalade as well - even whipped cream perhaps. This is not a detriment, just a wish, but oh we're those things carbambrosia in a pan. Phew. Also had the Cuban sandwich which was stuffed with ham and pulled pork and delicious pickles. The hot mustard was an awesome touch. Went back and told the chef they did a great job and it was obvious the team was proud of their work. Our server was wonderful too, laughing and attentive. Maybe it was because it was slow, or Larry was in a great mood, but I am inclined to think this place has it crushed every time. Thanks for a great dining experience. We'll be back. I came here for brunch and I was extremely disappointed. The host was great and sat us on time because she had the table ready. We were right next to the server station, which i don't mind cuz it doesn't really matter. We sat there for 15 minutes and nobody ever came to our table. We had to ask another server to help us because nobody even looked our way. The server finally came to our table and asked for our drink order but didn't really explain the menu or anything. my friend asked for a sprite with a splash of orange juice and she received a sprite with no orange juice. i got my iced tea which was warm lol. we ordered the biscuits, burger, and the praline french toast. the biscuits were to die for! but everything else was meh. my french toast was burnt and the inside all mushy but the taste was still nice. however, we never received napkins or utensils before our food arrived, so I had to hunt down for a server so we could eat our meal. when i asked for a napkin she gave us 5 cocktail napkins instead of a cloth linen. overall, our experience was really horrible. i work in the service industry and this was absolutely disappointing. for the price point that you're paying, it really should be better service and better food. read more

Stella San Jac was a welcome pitstop right before SXSW. My friend and I were looking for something to eat for lunch and got lucky because they were serving brunch that day. I got a bowl of delicious steel cut oats and we split some of the biscuits, which were quite delicious. The biscuits came with a honey butter that was really tasty without being overly sweet. It was a perfect match for the salty, flaky biscuits. But the real star of the show was my drink. I had some sort of coffee cocktail that sadly isn't on any of the menus on their website. It was creamy and tasty and way too easy to drink. I have a feeling the cocktails are always a go here. Our server was amazing and super easy to talk with. She was knowledgeable about the menu and made great suggestions. As if that wasn't enough, the space is really beautiful. I loved the look and feel of this place, so I would say half a point goes there. We started with biscuits, beet chips and the sprouts. Sprouts were the obvious stand outs. The biscuits were aok, but not mind blowing, and maybe something that should just come with your dinner. It felt silly to pay extra for them. The beet chips were really neat looking, but pretty blah. The horseradish/dill dipper was good though. I had the fried avocado salad. I added chicken. The salad was nothing to write home about. Romaine lettuce tossed is dressing topped with a few sliced cherry tomatoes and corn. The salad is named for three three slices of fried avocado that adorned it. Fried avocado may be better in theory than practice. Unfortunately they resemble cat poop on the side of the plate. My more polite friend said they looked like fingers to her. With so many other great options for lunch, I won't come back unless someone really wanted to. read more

I came here for dinner on a sunday night, the place was pretty empty so it was easy to get seated pretty quickly. The server/waiter handed me a menu and I asked her about beer options - specifically what was on tap, and if they had any rotating specials. She gave me a blank look and sent over another dude, who couldn't quite articulate what kind of beer was on tap. A bit of a turn off, but hey I guess not everyone who works at a restaurant/bar knows what is on tap or what kind of beer it was. The food itself was pretty good. I ordered the beef short rib, and substituted the sweet potato mash with the corn grits. The dish itself was pretty delicious - after all its pretty hard to mess up braised beef short rib. It was tasty and had the perfect texture. The corn grits and kale salad that came with the dish were ok. I didn't find the corn grits as amazing as the the waiter hyped them up to be. I found the overall dining experience to be ok, not terrible but also not amazing. Would have been nice to have the servers know what kind of beers were on tap - not just the name of the beer but what kind of beer it was. read more

I am normally not too impressed with hotel restaurants, but this place is something special. At first glance, it looks just like a bar, but once you walk past the bar you see it's rather large seating area. The menu reads like that of a very upscale restaurant. Lamb Meatballs, Lobster Mac, and bone marrow cooked in the bone are examples of some of the fare they have to offer. I chose the bone marrow and the fried avocado salad. The bone marrow is served with toast and it was phenomenal. But the fried avocado salad is what I really was impressed with. Besides the smooth earthy goodness of fried avocados, they added a special ingredient, candied jalapeños. The candied jalapeños added a unique sweet spiciness to the salad that I really enjoyed. The only reason I do not give this restaurant five stars is because I felt they were way over priced. But, if you want a nice bar to have a few cocktails and a quiet dinner with this is the place to come. read more

I've been here a few times. Another one of the limited restaurants in downtown Austin that has a full bar during brunch. Place deserves a 3.5 IMO. It is a nice buildout, a bit fancy. Located off a hotel lobby. On my first visit, I got the biscuits and the regular eggs Benedict. Biscuits were great. Eggs Benedict were proper, nothing extraordinary. Service was terrible, but I don't rate places on service. Only ratings on food. Second visit was a Friday morning. Sat right away. Place was empty. Service was much better. Got the biscuits again (fantastic). Brussel sprouts were good, caramelized, as expected. Deviled eggs I did not try, but they looked fine. Same with the salmon bruschetta (we didn't finish). Avocado toast was plain, not a lot of flavor. I would skip next time. Donut holes were pretty good. I'm not a sweets person, but the icing wasn't too sweet. Entrees were chicken fried steak (skip). Not very flavorful, had gravy on the side, but not nearly enough. And came with a fancy waffle like potato. It was bland. Chorizo breakfast tacos were the highlight, I would recommend. Good flavor and loaded with eggs, cheese and potatoes. Short rib grilled cheese was not good. Meat was dry, sandwich was flat. We did not finish as well. read more

Wow, just wow! We stayed at the Westin for the weekend and fell in love with the hotel. This restaurant was the perfect asset and complimented it well. Brunch was AMAZING! We had their well known biscuits, house-made donuts (which were by far the best thing I've ever eaten) deviled eggs which were to die for, shrimp & grits and the salmon Benedict. We definitely recommend eating all of the above! However the best part of our experience was Laurel, hands down. She made us feel comfortable, was hilarious, down to earth and inviting. I get being busy and hard working and this was not that. My wife got the redfish and it was so tiny and the end piece which was mediocre. It just wasn't good. Had a really nice brunch at Stella San Jac. I love that part of Austin (which is changing a lot) and it's a really nice vibe for a casual brunch. First off, our server was outstanding (I think her name was Shelby). She had a great attitude and seemed to really enjoy being there. She was at the table the right amount of times, and gave good recommendations. The food was solid and plentiful. We got the complimentary biscuits using the Yelp check-in which were fantastic. For mains got the breakfast tacos and stellaquiles. The tacos were really good (especially w/ corn tortillas). Stellaquiles were a bit on the heavy side for the morning laid over a bed of potato chips. Might have been better about 3 hours later but still very tasty. And the coffee was actually really good. I could go for a cup right now actually (our server offered to-go cups... I should have taken her up on it). Ok so the only downside which is preventing me from giving 5 stars. We were seated against the window right next to the restaurant set-up station (silverware, plates and the ordering computer for the servers). TERRIBLE location for a table... I seriously felt like I had someone's butt in my face for half of the meal. Every time a server needed to put in an order, print a bill or grab a plate, they were over there standing right next to where I was sitting (like, literally, right next to me). My tip to the restaurant is to use that table last. There were others available so really, don't put people there. Just don't. OK anyway, other than Serverbutt-gate, a great place and highly recommended. read more

My family and I had an astounding time at Stella San Jac. We ordered the Texas Red Fish, Berkshire Pork chop, Cesar Salad, and the Chicken Tenders. Every item was cooked (nearly) to perfection. Although the Berkshire Pork Chop was well seasoned, it still tasted rather bland. Furthermore, the sauce under the Pork Chop left a pleasant tangy flavor in my mouth after every bite. Moving on, the Texas Red Fish was well made but did not live up to its expectations after eating the Pork Chop. The Chicken Tenders tasted the way you would expect them to be and they are perfect for young kids. Finally the Cesar Salad is perfect for every vegetarian or someone just looking to lose some weight. Many people think that Salad = Boring, but that is not the case. The salad had a blend of flavors with rushed through my mouth after each bite. Everything up to even the sweet jalapeños made my mouth water and made me yearning for more. If you are looking for a great place to take your family and friends after a long week of work, this is the place! read more

I have mixed reviews and feelings about this place. I'll start with the bad and end with the good. There was mold in our mimosa carafe which started off the afternoon a little rocky. However, management and our waiter went out of their way to accommodate us for the mishap. We had a private section that closed off to the rest of the restaurant which helped some with noise and gave us a little more intimate feel to our brunch. I pass by here everyday to work so I'm amazed I haven't been here before. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is amazing, the service is amazing; by far my favorite place I've eaten downtown. Start off with some of the biscuits - you won't regret it. Great crusty texture, with smooth butter to go with it and sea salt spiked goodness on top. If you get a sandwich, be forewarned the portion sizes are huge and delicious leading you to a near instant afternoon siesta. I got a cuban sandwich, full and piled high with ham and pulled pork, melty cheese and pressed into a somewhat compact form - crisp pickles go well with it. The fries I've had better, but ask for some potato chips to be subbed in and you'll be golden. Some friends got the fried avocado salad, which is quite ingenious with the candied jalepenos. I visited here for brunch. Great food, beautiful atmosphere, good service. We did have a small problem with a homeless man asking my table for food and money, but after some persuasion he left. I only wish management could've watched over, and told him to leave; but there is no helping this problem! Upon checking in we received free delicious biscuits! Mimosas, Bloody Marys and an Irish coffee made us all feel fantastic even in the Texas heat. The Irish coffee was the best, coming with a coffee filled ice-ball! I was in Austin for the weekend and decided to make reservations here due to the amazing reviews. When we checked in at our reservation time, we were promptly seated at a table that had one chair and a sofa on the other side- I sat on the sofa which caused me to be uncomfortable throughout the whole meal. To my surprise, they had a Dj playing top 40 in the corner of the room which created a pleasantly surprising ambiance. Not something you'd expect from a hotel restaurant. We had ordered the brussels sprouts to start and when they came out, the amount of oil they were cooked in was very clear. The jalapenos were a nice touch but unfortunately, they missed the mark with the sprouts. I had ordered the avocado toast and again- disappointed. I don't think I would call this a meal, the piece of toast that came out (1 piece) was the size of my palm, placed in the center of a very large plate. The avocado was underwhelming and was not seasoned- I would not recommend this dish to anyone. The waitress was very attentive, the rosè was delicious and the music was great; sadly, the food was not at all what I expected. read more
