Nathan is the MVP. I won't lie, when I was in the chair and feeling how quick the cut was I was a little worried. He was nice through and through though and that put my mind at ease. And then when I saw my haircut after he was done I felt like I'd just seen a magic trick. I gave him the bare minimum idea of what I wanted and he did it faster and better than anyone else has ever cut my hair. Usually I'll find all kinds of missed spots after a haircut and there was nothing when he was done. I'm a very picky person with my hair and have even buzzed my head if the cut isn't what I wanted. Stew's Cal Oaks is an amazing barbershop. My wife and I happened to stop by with my son to get a haircut for him today and we were greeted promptly. While my son was getting a cut I was asked by the other lady if I wanted one as well. I hadn't originally gone in there for myself but decided to go for it. Wow. Having just moved to the area from San Diego, I had been looking for a close place that could provide good military haircuts. Having received a recommendation from a neighbor, I decided to give Stews a chance; walking in, I felt that I was in the right place as one part of the wall had patches from law enforcement and the military (I also liked the Star Wars and football memorabilia). Nathan, the owner, was the one who cut my hair and he did an excellent job; he was also very personable and had a good discussion on the Lions/Cowboys game (he being a Dallas fan, with me being a Detroit fan). Moved from OC in May, I've been looking for a good, consistent barber ever since. I've been all over town since May trying to find the best place for my son and I. Struck out many times, from the 'big chains', whose names need not be mentioned, to the fancier salons. Still inconsistent, either too short, uneven, or just not the desired result (yeah, so I'm hard to please, at least you don't have to live with me). I found Stews based on recommendations from NextDoor, and it was spot-on. Small 'hole in the wall', which is all I need. Some great sports memorabilia (if you like that sort of thing), very friendly and comfortable. Feels like that 'old town barber' where people would gather, tell fish stories and other one upmanship, just having a good time. Sure, the group there likes to chat about many different things, I think that's what adds ambiance, rather than a quiet library-like place. As for the haircut, I can comfortably say they took their time, asking me along the way if they needed to take more, thin out, that sort of thing. In the end, it's the cut I expected. I'll be back. I've been going to Stew's for about 10 years. I consistently get a good haircut and a lot of great, sometimes rather bizarre, conversation (existence of Bigfoot, do animals have souls, and of course sports, sports, sports). Nathan is a constant presence, but the other barbers will come and go, but of course that is to be expected. About a year ago I moved away and tried several other barber shops, but have returned to Stew's for the consistently good customer service. If they are busy Nathan will go out of his way to explain how long the wait will be and apologize for the inconvenience (not necessary, but a nice touch). Try to go on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowd. They offer discounts for military and 1st responders. Lastly Nathan is obviously into sports memorabilia and if you ask he will keep an eye out for something you may be looking for, like an autographed jersey or something like that. read more

This place is so cool. One of the reasons why we chose this place is because my son loves Star Wars and we thought he would enjoy getting his hair cut with all the stuff !!! He sure loved it ! I brought my other son in a different time (who was only a year old )for his first hair cut; he screamed and cried and I felt terrible and uncomfortable but the owner Nathan made light of the situation and he was so supportive and tried to do everything to make us all comfortable. He's so soo supportive to his staff too, he kept telling them what a good job they were doing ( them because two people stepped in at one point ) My youngest even got a "first hair cut certificate " and a clipping of hair. Worst hair cut ever !!! The blonde women rushed when she saw her other client come in asking for her. She also ruined my the fade, also before even setting in the chair there some one else's hair everywhere that I had to sit in. On top Of that I was left with a Harry neck that i had to shave myself . Not sure where to start as I have mixed feelings about this place. If I could separate rating based on quality of the haircut, friendliness of staff and then a different rating for the cleanliness of the place I would. I will start with the staff, I've been here twice and had two different barbers help me, I am sorry I do not know their names one was a gentleman with a beard and the other was a blonde lady both times the haircut was amazing, staff was super friendly and if I could give them 10 stars for quality and friendliness I would. Now for the cleanliness of the place, this is where I have an issue, if I could give it -5 I would. The place was very dusty, looked like no one has mopped in over 5 years or even vacuumed. I took my 3 year old with me and he started playing with the toys and once I noticed how dirty they were I had my wife hold him the entire time because I didn't want him to catch a disease. Then my son needed to use the restroom and to no surprise it was just as bad as the rest. I also noticed that the back room was full of crap and the reason why I am calling this out is because I myself own a business and the number one thing for me is ensuring my staff is happy and that the place is clean, not sure this staff even has a place to relax during breaks and lunches, very sad. Whoever the owner is needs to get their act together, clean the place and you will have a 5 start rating. I might give it one more try just because I love the friendliness of the Barbers and the quality of the haircut, but if the place is still a mess I will not go back. read more

The staff there is very professional, extremely skilled, and always make sure the customer gets exactly what they want. Not to mention the awesome memorabilia all over the walls !!
