I got the ying yang rice with fish cream sauce on one side and meat and red sauce on the other, it was delicious!! Lots of protein and good portion. Salted egg yolk fries also a hit for me! Perfectly crispy and perfect amount of salty egg yolk flavor. The dim sum I'm thinking they order frozen and re steam
Stopped by here on a Friday night with some friends who were craving Hainanese Chicken. When we got to the restaurant, I remembered I had come here about a year ago, and the menu had totally been revamped, either that or it was the lunch menu. Anyways we got seated quickly, and I began with a nice cold beer and we started looking at the menu. We instantly had to get the baked pork chop w. Spaghetti as that was pretty much our childhood choice, going to HK style places. We grabbed some fried fish skin in salted egg yolk and fried chicken in salted egg yolk as we haven't had that before. Both were good. I definitely never had that chicken in salted egg yolk before but it seemed to work well. We got a half order of the Hainanese chicken, and that was delicious with the sauces provided. You can never go wrong with dim sum, so we got the sui mai, har gow, steamed pork ribs, and chicken feet. All were comparable to what you would get at a dim sum restaurant in the morning, but instead we had it at 8pm! Overall, the ambiance of the place is nice and quiet, with a few families eating out, and some college students enjoying a meal. The waiters would frequently stop by and refill our water cups whenever they were near empty, I probably would have got rice but my friends wanted spaghetti with the baked porkchop, overall a great place for a meal with dim sum too!
Food 3.75/5 I recommend the hainan chicken series here! The chicken is soft and flavorful. Would not recommend the baked series, the fillet fish didn't taste fresh and the pasta wasn't flavorful. The wontons were good with lots of shrimp but the soup was just okay. We also got spareribs for dimsum but half of it was all taro, the xlb was okay not terrible. *they have afternoon sets which is a pretty good deal (1 entree + 1 drink) for $14 Service 4/5 Usual service here, nothing to complain about Ambiance 4/5 It's a little dark inside and not a ton of seating. But a great choice for late night munchies
Trying out a new spot, for us, and it was a pleasant surprise. The Hainan chicken was good and the soup that came with it was so flavorful! My husband really enjoyed his Sizzling Crispy Chicken Curry. He does wish the curry was a little bit spicier and thicker, but delicious nonetheless. Our friend's Combination Rice came with a drink with the special that is currently ongoing for only $19.99! The tables were a little sticky and the service was a little slow but the server did their best, and that's what matters.
My go to place for wontons! I don't know if it's because it's part of the Koi Palace group but their wontons are legit. Bouncy and lots of shrimp flavor!!! The host and the waiters are very nice and friendly. They speak both English and Cantonese. All my friends and family love this place and they said they will come back just for the wontons. So next time you're in Millbrae and looking for a quick lunch, come and eat here!
First time visit dine in. Previously I had to go order. There are plenty item on the menu. I am craving for wonton noodle soup and hainam chicken rice and my friend suggested to have them here. Illegal order hainam chicken rice with scallion sauce, shrimp wonton noodle soup, drink, wasabi shrimp toast and salty egg fries. They are ok. The wonton is good but the noodle is a bit bland. The soup is light and ok. The hainam chicken rice is ok. I like the scallion sauce. It comes with dipping sauce and it is interesting. Wasabi shrimp toast is a bit hard. Overall they are ok. I don't like on suggested min 18% granularity where there is no much service at all.
A safe haven from the ridiculous lines at In and Out, consider this a viable alternative with an expansive menu. Har gow - nice portion size. They need to put soy sauce on the table, however. Green beans - plentiful and cooked just right - not too crunchy not too limpy. XLB - skippable. You can tell it's not made to order because the skin sticks to the little Foil wrapping Chicken Ginger soup Hearty and hits the spot even on a hot day. Or even better if you're feeling under the weather. The ginger aromas really pop out to enhance the dish. The kitchen closes at about 2:30 and they were nice to accommodate us and let us know ahead of time for last call,etc. That's all.
This unassuming spot was perfect for a casual group dinner! It's in a strip mall, and it wasn't busy. But the dumplings were great! We enjoyed Sapporo beers and a lot of Sui Mai, soup dumplings, chicken and rice and other dishes. The ambiance is minimal, so don't expect a vibe but do expect tasty casual dining.
It's amazing that it's been six years since my 1st and only visit. We were planning to have lunch a few blocks away at the dumplings and noodle place but they were closed for a few days. Originally pivoting to another lunch rotation spot down the road on 101 South, I suggested coming here to minimize the travel time before our next errand. Arriving around 11:30 am, we were fortunate to park in a handicap space just a few steps away as my friend has a blue placard. There was no one at the greeting station at first but a young lady quickly asked us how many in our party. Noticing that my friend was using a walker, she offered the table nearest the iPad check in stand. We were given three menu sheets, one being a two-sided regular menu while the other two were specials. I liked that specials were offered and I noticed the menu was larger than I remember. It was on the sweet side so I waited for more of the ice to melt before drinking it. The flavors were good and the aloe and popping balls made this interesting. The ha gao was slightly oversteamed as the skin on one of the two that I had stuck to the bamboo steamer. The claws (or chicken feet as I normally refer to them) were perfect as the collagen fell off the soft bones once I put mine in my mouth. My friend did not read the menu carefully when we ordered and pointed to the Hainan chicken rice noodles instead of the rice plate that she wanted. She still enjoyed it and I may try that on my next visit. I am glad that we stopped here as it saved on our travel time as we had a few more errands to run this afternoon. The two gals who helped us were efficient and helpful as we were in and out of the restaurant in less than an hour. The dining room was half full and stayed about the same with customers coming and going. I would return if in the neighborhood for a quick bite. Do note that parking can be challenging especially during peak times since In & Out is just a few paces away and their drive thru line flows towards here.
Stopped by here on a Wednesday afternoon and didn't have to wait too long :) Stick & Steam has a cozy ambience, like somewhere you would go if you wanted a home-y meal. I had two orders of the variety XLB's as well as the Egg Yolk Lava bun. Everything was so fresh and made to order! Loved the flavors of the XLB's and appreciate that the skin was the right balance of thickness. Staff members were also very attentive and polite. Will definitely stop by again :)
I got a social media post about daily dinner specials for under $20 and stopped in on a Tuesday to try the Hainan Chicken rice and a side for $14.99 + $3 side dish. I was going to take the order to go so I used a kiosk that was reserved for 2 Go orders. It was easy enough to use the kiosk and there were options to customize your order to take out onions or substitute noodles (rice/egg/flat). I decided to take out the daikon/carrot spicy salad that accompanied the meal because of a pepper allergy and ordered the lettuce with oyster sauce to make up for the loss of veggies. I also decided to try the dim sum special pick 3 for $12.99. It took about 20 minutes for the food to come out. I had high hopes for this place as I heard it was under the same ownership as Koi Palace. I was disappointed in the hainan chicken as it was bland, rubbery and there was a large bone in my drumstick even though the description said boneless. The rice didn't have much flavor as well as the cabbage. I had to use the sauces to help make the food more tasty. The romaine lettuce only included a few leaves and it appeared to be singed. It also had no aroma and the Oyster sauce just made it very salty. I liked the garlic, scallion oil the best. The soy mai was pretty small, 3 pieces and XLB was pretty mediocre as well. The kiosk advertised a point system to earn discounts and free food but I was told they hadn't set up the program yet.
Not good at all. Ordered the combination baked rice. The order came on to the table 5 minutes after I ordered. Pork cutlet and fish cutlet was deep fried but cold. The rice was lukewarm instead of hot. The jasmine green tea with crème I ordered was nasty. They put condensed milk to the drink. It just tastes off. Won't be back.

3.5 STARS I came across Stick & Steam under Yelp's "Hot and New Businesses" and saw Charcoal Pork Belly Baos.... OHHH HEEEYYY! I LOVE pork belly... My thunder thighs can attest to this! BUT I figure the charcoal would cancel out the bad...at least in my imagination. :T Formerly Cafe Encore, Stick & Steam is a new Asian Fusion/Pan-Asian eatery inside the plaza with In-N-Out and Panera. On the menu are steamed and fried dumplings, hainan chicken, noodle soups, skewers, and teas. Since I had Tater Tot in tow, I ordered to go at their kiosk and sat in the communal tables outside. I ordered the following; items listed from favorite to least favorite (sorry for the bad pics in to-go boxes): * Pork Belly Bao (2 pc - $7) Loved the smoky flavor of the pork belly. There was a good ratio of tender meat to delicious fatty layers with caramelized edges. The charcoal bao was soft and fluffy (charcoal has no taste). The baos were served with a weird side salad of spinach, iceberg lettuce, chicken, egg whites, bell peppers, carrots, raisins, pomegranate, dried cranberry, nuts. Too much going on IMO. * Typhoon Hai Gow: Deep fried shrimp dumplings w/ garlic, fried chili, scallions (4 pc - $6.50) Creative take on Typhoon shelter shrimp - wrapper was a bit too thick but the shrimp filling was moist. Could be spicier and more garlicky. * Hainan Chicken (Half - $16) I love, love Hainan chicken and this one was just ok. Not as soft and moist as I expected it to be. I really enjoyed the accompanying chili-garlic sauce though, it was so flavorful. * Spinach Beef Siu Mai (3 pc - $4.50) I wasn't a fan of the spongy texture. Also, ordered the Chicken Heart and Chicken Cartilage ($2.75/skewer) but my friend ate it all before I could get to it. :/ I really dig what they done with the space, it's hip, instagrammable, and there's an open kitchen to watch all the action. Other than In-N-Out and the usual Chinese restaurants, Millbrae isn't a food destination so it's great to see a modern eatery like Stick & Steam bringing some hipness to the area! read more
The setting was cool and the service was prompt. The food was just ok for me. The plating is hip and the menu has outdoor market/ late night snack food vibes. For the price points, I guess I was expecting a little more. The sea bass collar and pork belly were tasty. The fries and kimcheese fried rice could have been amped up in flavor and seasoning. The quality reminded me of snack foods you get at a boba place like Quickly's. The grilled shrimp was good, but a bit burnt and dry. read more

Fast Hot and Delicious! What a treat for a chilly Friday night. Stopped in seated right away and the place was hopping already for 6pm! Loved the variety of the menu soups dim sum veggies grilled specialties! We ordered a sampling of items -string beans soup and dim sum. The string beans which came out first sizzling on stone plate just the right amount of crunch and spice! Then a braised beef soup with our choice of middles we chose egg noodles - oh my! This was so delicious especially for this just getting over the latest cold gal. The broth was rich not too salty or greasy, the beef tender and flavorful and noodles perfectly cooked. More than enough for two and some leftover. Our array of dim sum came out as they were ready which meant they were fresh and hot. The pan fried soup dumplings my first time trying were a real treat with a nice crunch on the bottom and subtle sweetness. All the other were order we're good too. The shui mai were large ! It filled up as we were there and they were also doing a brisk take out business. Def if we're in the area or craving some quick tasty dim sum and more we'll be back. Overrated and RIDICULOUSLY overpriced for their hainan chicken rice. First, let's talk about the to go container. If the quantity is not so much, i think they should switch to another type of togo container. Overall it just looked pathetic. Secondly, let's talk about the taste. The rice was way too oily and garlicy to be a decent hainan chicken rice. the authentic flavor should just be light with a hint of chicken soup cooked with the rice. The chicken itself wasn't as good either. The only thing i liked about the chicken was that they made it boneless. And not to mention, since the chicken wasn't so good, I asked for extra sauce to cover the taste and they told me they can't give me extra sauce! All i wanted was one extra garlic and onion oil sauce and they were too stingy to given give that. read more
Decent fusion food with modern dim sum options! My favorite thing by far was the typhoon ha gao (which is their deep fried version of ha gao). Juicy shrimp inside with a crispy exterior sprinkled with fried garlic! Some other things I got to try: Egg yolk lava buns: comes with 2. Delicious gooey savory yet slightly sweet egg yolk inside a soft pillowy white steamed bread. Egg yolk fries: decently flavored and crispy fries! String beans: a little on the sweet side but still tasty. Surprisingly this took the longest to come out Spicy Mala chicken: my favorite part of this dish was the pork rib bone soup (that I paid extra for). The chicken wasn't really spicy but your mouth will definitely be numb from the mala! Overall good place for some quick bites! read more
Learning to love this place given the variety of items cooked to perfection! Whether it's a skewer or beef tendon noodle soup, everything is cooked just right with tender loving care. None of the meats or vegetables are overcooked, but soft enough to maintain texture too. Some of my favorites include their noodle soups, Hainan chicken, sea bass collar, and xiao long bao trio. All their skewers are worth a try including chicken hearts, lamb, and pork belly. If you're afaid of spicy chicken roulette, counter it with the brown sugar milk with agar boba. The service is friendly, helpful, and quick. Parking is ample and this is definitely one of the yummiest options to check out in the area. Came here with 2 of my coworkers after a work event for an early dinner. We came around 4pm and got seated right away. Luckily, we came during happy hour, so a lot of the items we ordered were on discount! We ordered using typical pencil/paper at dim sum spots, and ordered a lot on the happy hour menu lol. We were super happy with the fast service. Our server took our order right away, and the food came out in about 10 minutes, wow! I loved the Xiao Long Bao & Shui Mai! My coworkers loved the seafood dumplings. I also had the Hainan Chicken Chinese rice. That tasted ok, a little dry, but I still enjoyed it. We even ordered extra to-go to save for lunch for the next day lol. Overall, good food spot and it was near our work conference. read more

*3.5 stars* Cute and modern looking space, options are mostly tapas/snack style with a few entree options. What we ordered: Salted egg fries 4/5: I love anything with salted egg so I knew I had to order these fries. Good salted egg flavor, each fry was almost coated completely. Although I felt like maybe SOMETHING else was missing in order to make this 5/5. Maybe a little seasoning in addition to the salted egg? Honestly not sure...but still a solid option though if you like salted egg! Wagyu Kimcheese Fried Rice 3.5/5: Medium-sized portion, the wagyu beef was good, but there wasn't much cheese or kimchi flavor. And also would've been better with a regular sunny side up egg instead of an egg omelette. It's not bad though, probably the most filling thing we ordered! Skewers 3/5: We ordered beef wrapped enoki and chicken heart. Both were okay, skewers are on the smaller side. Pork belly skewers with charcoal buns 4/5: Probably my favorite thing that we ordered. The pork belly was perfect and slightly crispy. Charcoal buns were fun but tasted no different than a regular bun. Pork belly is also on the smaller side. Typoon Fried Hagow 2/5: Least favorite dish although pretty flavorful. Skin was just really fried and I wasn't a fan. Stick & Steam is a decent place to go for a snack. They also have other dishes like Hainan chicken rice and chicken roulette, which seems to be popular. Probably will be back to try out other options. Hopefully they'll add more skewer options and entrees as well. They also have a small selection of drinks and beer. read more
Omg! I honestly didn't expect much coming to this place as it is a fusion restaurant, but some items were pretty good and that blew my mind House potstickers tasted pretty authentic, so that surprised me. Typhoon hagao was a deep fried hagao (shrimp dimsum) with some fried toppings on top. This was delish! I usually don't like hagao because of the skin, but since it was deepfried, I actually liked it. And it wasn't too oily, always a plus. Enoki beef rolls skewers were just whatever. Would not get it again as it's expensive for 3 tiny little things. Not worth. XLB trio was decent. Definitely not the best XLB I ever had, but it's decent for a fusion place! They still had a good amount of soup in them compared to other places. Service was not great in my opinion. As my friend took the last XLB the waiter came swiftly to take the plate away.. with the sauce that my friend did not get a chance to dip.. the table next to me was getting some last bits of onions on the plate and the waiter just stood next to her WAITING for her to finish so he can get the plate. How awkward is that? Also, they forgot about one of our skewers. So yeah service is not on par. read more

Decided to come here because we saw a lot of photos from Friends and having it come up on my hot and new feed on Yelp convinced us to give it a try. We got a few dishes to try such as the combo xlb and spinach wraps sui mai. The crab xlb was pretty good but a little light on the crab flavor, the truffle xlb with similar with some hint of truffle but not a lot. They both basically tasted like the basic xlb but with a hint of their flavoring. Since the kids wanted noodles we got the Hainan chicken noodle. the chicken is pretty solid and the soup comes with the thick rice flat noodle. We also ordered a fried chicken rice which ended up being more like a crispy skin chicken rice as a chicken was not deep fried. Both were pretty good but the chicken portion size was a small half chicken. Maybe a quarter of what you would get at Costco. The crispy chicken comes with a dipping salt which taste like the spice packet you get in instant ramen. Also got three skewers, the lamb, beef with enoki mushroom and chicken wings. The spice on the meat was pretty decent with a little cumin flavor. Came at 6:10 on a Friday and what's the second person on the list.We waited about 15 minutes until one party left and we were able to be seated. Once we put in our order the food started coming out within 5 minutes or less. I think if they had smaller tables they could accommodate different size parties a little bit easier. The tables are slightly bigger than the normal two-person table but too small to hold four people. So when there is parties of 3 or 4, they put two of those tables together which could probably fit six. I'm no seating expert but they may be better suited having a communal table which will hold multiple parties if people share. Overall the food was pretty good and we would come back to eat again. read more

Creative menu, excellent food, nice service. My favorite thing here is the XLB Trio. Simply the best in the Bay Area. I think everyone should get their own Trio. The three is very different and you can't split a Soup Dumpling. So best advice I can give you is to get your own Trio... The next thing I really like is the Pina Colada. It tastes just like the Pina Colada's I love in Hong Kong. So creamy and delicious. One thing I don't recommend here is the Mountain Yam. I like it when they barely cook the Chinese Yam so it is still crispy and a bit gooey inside. This one is a bit like a dry potato with no flavor. No delicious, heh. read more

my parents and I came here just looking for something to eat around millbrae. they ordered the shrimp wonton noodle soup and hainan chicken noodle soup. super mediocre tbh - the hainan chicken noodle soup was kind of bland but at least the sauces they provided helped give it a bit more flavor. I felt like I really had to dip into the hoisin sauce for it to be to my satisfaction but I also just love sauces lol my parents thought it wasn't worth the money tbh but we also didn't order the dim sum so maybe that was better? it's a small place - kind of a hole in the wall next to a lot of fast food spots. we were seated quickly though, and food came out just as quickly read more

Parking is easy to find in the shared private lot. The inside is small but we never had a problem getting seated. The food and service are both good prices seem on par for the area. Had a good experience and wouldn't mind going back if I'm in the area again. read more
This place is like a Chinese fusion tapas place. Salty egg fries - sorry, I'm Chinese. To me, this is fun food and personally, I loved the flavor you may not. It's an acquired taste. Pot stickers - nothing special even if looks different see attached. Hainan chicken - it's good, but not that big of a deal. Just like all the other Hainan chicken. Crispy egg plant - didn't meet expectation. Not that special. More if it coated with battered and mixed salt and pepper into the starch, that should be interesting Kimchi fried rice - I liked it! I liked it so much I didn't wait for the picture. Slightly spicy and didn't get overwhelmed by the kimchi flavor. Well done. Beef stew noodle - I'm not crazy about the noodles they used but the soup ain't bad. This place is not bad but the problem is not enough choices on the menu. It's hard for people to come back and able to try new dishes cause this is tapas restaurant, people came here once might tried most of the dishes. Suggestion for owner: Put together a monthly special menu. That way people want to come back to try the specials. It should be a few things and not something slightly change. And rotate your monthly special... Eh, monthly? Or bi-monthly. Important thing is to get them to come back because there are specials that may or may not serve again. It also help the kitchen and the chef to manage inventory and efficiency. read more
Whenever I'm craving Hainan chicken with rice, Stick & Steam always seems to comes to mind... Ordered the regular Hainan chicken rice plate, crispy fried chicken rice plate, salted egg yolk fries and salted egg yolk fish skin (I know, I went a little overboard with the salted egg yolk stuff). The Hainan chicken is a staple for me from them and the crispy fried chicken was pretty good too, they give you 3 types of sauce and they were all very different from each other but complimented the chicken very well. I had the salted egg yolk fries before so I knew it was good but then the salted egg yolk fish skin blew my mind even more! It was super crispy and crunchy even after 20mins of getting back home to finally get to try the fish skin. The batter was light and you can totally taste the salted egg yolk all coated on the fish skin, it was a delight in every bite. Haven't tried a place that makes this good of their fried fish skin yet without it being soggy after brining it back home from delivery, so this place definitely made it to my go-to list when it comes to Hainan chicken rice and salted egg fish skin! read more
came here a while ago for a quick dinner,l. everything was spot on except the noodle soup, very bland even if you add the mala chicken roll to it. The flavored rice was really good and the Hainan chicken with the ginger scallion sauce was great. The typhoon chicken wings is a must order very good, fried perfectly and the garlic bits was great. read more

We were in the area and excited to try the A2 Hainan Chicken with Scallion sauce rice$16.75. The sauce over powered the chicken. Better to stick with plain chicken if sodium isn't your thing. Rice was so so. We tried F1 Baked Sea bass collar. It took 25 minutes to come out. Unfortunately it was smothered in a teriyaki tasting sauce and half of the fish tasted of freezer burn and just old fish. There was maybe 2 ounces of decent non fishy tasting fish for the $23.50 we paid. Lots of other options that are available and we saw all the frozen dim sum and foods wheeled in. Obviously lots of food is prepared off site. We won't be back and note that there are many other good Cantonese places to choose from in this area. Not sure what the hype is about. Place was fairly full with mostly Cantonese customers for a Monday at 12:30pm. Decent service. Some prices are on the lower side along with the food quality. read more

Stick & Steam is an absolute hit! The restaurant is on the tinier side and it clearly draws a crowd so we suggest using the Yelp online waitlist to make it more convenient. The menu is quite extensive offering a variety of skewers (stick), dim sum (steam), main entrees, and even a boba list! Although, none of the boba flavors really piqued our interested. Since everything was quite tiny in portion, it allowed us to try many items, including: wagyu kimcheese fried rice, New York prime steak skewer, house cheese corn skewer, xiao long bao, har gow, siu mai, house potstickers, and the cheese baked scallops. Service did veer towards the slow side, but we liked how responsive everyone was whenever we needed something. Each dish came out one-by-one, starting with the kimchi fried rice which was easily one of our favorites. The creamy egg and cheese, the tender beef, and tangy rice made for an amazing dish that was comfortably shared between us. We didn't have a single complaint. The New York steak was delicious, making it a must try for everyone! It was cooked perfectly. I personally loved the siu mai which had more shrimp than pork while the hubby greatly enjoyed the house corn which was grilled to his liking. The rest of our meal, while good, wasn't exactly spectacular. The xiao long bao were flavorful, but they didn't have much soup. The har gow tasted as expected and the baked scallops were slightly strange in that they tasted somewhat fishy. The potstickers were pan fried well, but we felt that the filling was somewhat bland. Prices at Stick & Steam do veer towards the pricier side, but we liked how we got to try a variety of items. While it was quite a distance for us, we wouldn't mind coming back. A sister restaurant to the venerable Koi Palace. Stick and Steam serves semi-Asian fusion that is mostly either grilled on a 'stick' or just plain 'steamed', hence the store name (insert laughing emoji) I had the chance to try most of the items on the menu since I came with a party of 6. HOUSE POTSTICKER Do not order!! Many reviews have repeated this comment, I ignored it since the dish looked cool but I also wanted potstickers!! ...but got something that was more like a boiled dumpling that was quickly cooked with a crispy rice paper on the bottom... despite the look, the potsticker did not have the crunch I was expecting, the rice paper they add to the bottom didn't really add to the taste or texture (seemed to be there mostly for looks) and to top it off, the filling felt mostly empty... It's not horrible persay, I'd rate this dish a little under the ling ling dumplings at Costco. TYPHOON HA GAO Order this!! It's delicious, like a ha gao with a fried mochi skin wrap. SALTED EGG FRIES This is also pretty good, solid fries with a tasty twist! GRILLED FOOD (stick) Although, I only tried the shrimp and beef enoki, they were pretty good and tasty. I'd recommend getting some grilled items. Overall, this place has some good food menu items, the food comes out amazingly quick, but the service is just okay, and the overall experience is just okay too. With the plethora of Asian restaurants in Millbrae, it's hard to stand out but Stick & Steam does a great job with their modern fusion take on traditional Asian dishes. Food and service were both excellent! Must gets include the Typhoon Ha Gao, Sea Bass Collar, XLB Trio, House Potsticker and Salted Egg Yolk Fries. The Typhoon Ha Gao was the star of the show. They come as a set of four shrimp dumplings covered in a seasoned crispy fried dough and covered with a blend of garlic and chili spices that'll dazzle your taste buds. The Sea Bass Collar is made with a sweet miso glaze that's baked to perfection. The XLB Trio is a great sampler if you've never tried "Xiao Long Bao" before. These are steamed soup dumplings and you get one of each flavor (pork, shrimp & pork and truffle & pork). The Salted Egg Yolk Fries makes for a perfect snack and appetizer option. Great new little place in Millbrae that's perfect for lunch or dinner. Parking is a bit difficult in this crowded plaza but it's definitely worth the visit. read more
Located in a strip mall by right by the Millbrae BART station, you know, the one with the In N Out! The restaurant is casual, and there is an extensive menu. My friend and I ordered from the steamed dim sum menu. The hargow and shumai were solid, but there were some unique items on the menu we tried as well: Beef Shumai with spinach wrapper: The color was very pretty, but it tastes like a normal shumai dumpling. XLB Trio (regular, crab, truffle): Very pretty presentation and nice to have a variety. Definitely worth trying! Typhoon Ha gao: spicy, deep fried dumplings. Most of the dim sum items were solid, but I regret getting the beef noodle soup. The meat was super tender, but the lettuce was strange in the soup and I wished the soup was hotter. In one word: tasty. In two words: small portions. I guess that's why it's called tapas style. Ordered the popular dishes of: Typhoon Ha Gao $6.50 Salted Egg Fries $5.75 Beef Kimcheese Fried Rice $12.75 Half Hainan Chicken $16 By far the best thing was Typhoon Ha Gao -- imagine pot sticker shaped HA GAO filling and deep fried with spicy garlic sprinkles -- so damn good but expensive at $6.50 for just 4 pieces. Each piece took two bites to finish. Next best was Salted Egg Fries -- if you're a fan of salted egg batter, you need to order this. It is gooooood! But again, portion was small for $5.75 Beef Kimcheese Fried Rice is probably something I could've whipped up at home. Just throw some kimchi and beef with rice, then put scrambled egg on top. They could've added way more cheese. Hainan Chicken is standard dish but again expensive for half $16. I can get a whole steamed chicken from standard bbq place for that price. It was interesting to try this place. They need to get rid of the bug zapper at the entrance. Even though it emits a blue light, that's not the kind of ambience lighting people like. read more

The waitlist showed about 30 minute wait via yelp but when we showed up and got seated immediately. Parking is a bit hard to find since it's located in the in n out plaza, also the same with Panera. We got seated and got menus. The waiter didn't ever come back to check on us. They left a paper and pencil on the table so by process of elimination we just assumed we needed to go in and started writing on it. But for someone that has never experienced such a thing - this could be terrible service as they didn't instruct you on what to do or how to order. No one came to tell us any specials, what to get or even try to up sell a boba. We came on a Monday around 1:45pm and there was 2 empty tables left. All the others were filled. They also don't remove anyone from the waitlist at the door (hence the 30 minute wait). They didn't even use the waitlist system at all. We ordered a couple things - hainan chicken with rice, plus an additional soup for $2 upgrade. We also ordered a beef noodle soup, and XLB. To be honest, the place wasn't busy enough for the waiters to not stop by or even spend 2 minutes to walk us through the menu. The food came pretty quick, however overall taste was okay. Nothing spectacular nor pushing me to drive here next time for some food. XLB was okay there wasn't much soup inside the soup dumpling. For 3 pieces it's a bit on the pricier side. The hainan chicken was actually hot, I thought it would be cold. The rice was rather dry, not oily or moist enough for a classic hainan chicken dish. Portions looked small however once we started eating all of our dishes it was just about right. The beef noodle soup surprisingly was not bad. I had little to no hope that it would be good - assuming it was a taiwanese style dish made by cantonese chefs. The noodle was chewy and quite qq. The soup was alright, a little spice kicked in for an aftertaste. All in all, the food was okay, price is pretty high, and portions were average. Came here on a Saturday night at 6 PM and there were still lots of tables available. They hand you a paper menu to mark what items you want on the menu as well as a laminated menu to see some pictures of their most popular items. Their entree items come with a salad so it seems like it's more typical for people to order their own entree rather than sharing them. Overall, this place is cute and trendy with pretty decent food! 1. House potsticker 3/5 There's only four that come out on the plate. Potsticker was pretty good but not amazing enough to warrant the price. 2. Salted egg yolk fries 3.5/5 My friend and I had really high hopes for this but maybe we were too excited about it. The fries were crunchy and completely coated with salted egg yolk "batter" (?) but they overall just tasted a bit too salty. 3. Passionfruit aloe green tea 4.5/5 I really liked having this drink with my meal--a little bit on the sweet side so you may have to ask them for half sweet. It has pieces of aloe and lots of basil seeds in it. 4. XLB (xiao long bao) Trio 4/5 This comes out as three small XLB -- the black one is truffle, the white one is original, and the yellow one is crab. The XLB was pretty good -- not a lot of soup in it but the meat was tender. 5. Beef Kimcheese Fried Rice 5/5 I really liked this fried rice although I didn't feel like the cheese could really be tasted. Since this is an entree, it comes with salad. I thought this entree was pretty good and would order this again. 6. Hainan Chicken Rice Plate 3.5/5 The rice was much dryer than I expected and lacked the strong chicken/ginger flavor that is distinct about hainan chicken rice. The chicken tasted bland when dipped in the hoisin/soy sauce but with the red sauce and ginger/garlic mix it was much better. read more
Interesting Asian fusion tapa style liked restaurant. It's a small place, may be great for lunch but not for dinner. Mainly because the menu is somewhat limited and the portion is small. A place for midnight snack with a couple of people, definitely not with a large crowd (otherwise your entree will duplicate). When I was there, they offered a 10% discount for grand opening. The price was decent, except for the skewers. They ran out of a couple of items which I didn't really appreciate given the menu is already limited. Taste wise, some dishes were flavorful while most were just decent. I tried their salty egg yolk fries but they were soggy. Their Hunan rice was flavorful but the chicken lack flavor and was tough/over cooked (not juicy). Their beef skewers were delicious. The kimchee rice was decent. read more

Visiting SF and stopped by to try out this restaurant. Walked in at 2:18pm. Lady at the counter tells me that they are closed?? Door was wide open with a door stopper? So I asked "what time do got close?" She said 2:20pm? Huh.. ok? Walked out and checked on Yelp and online what time the restaurant closes, it says at 2:30pm. Even if I did come in 10m before they close, I understand it's last min but I was going to order and sit outside where the have plenty of tables available next to other connecting restaurants. Seems like this restaurant doesn't care much for business and to lie to me and tell me they close at 2:20? Not professional at all! taking my business elsewhere. read more
