My first yum-cha and dim sum review of 2026! What was once Tai Wu, is now Hong Kong Palace, which joins its older siblings; Lai Hong Lounge and Hong Kong Lounge - both dim sum institutions in San Francisco proper (I also have reviews on both). Where: Millbrae has always had a sleuth of dim sum or large Cantonese restaurants. Seeing the May Flower close its doors was discerning, but that Hong Kong Palace fills that void, or at least I think so. Located just minutes from Millbrae Bart station, and roughly 30 minutes by car from the center of San Francisco. Parking is also very accessible in the area (residential and parking lot). What: come here for dim sum during the day, and dinner in the evening for classic Cantonese fare. The restaurant has 3 floors of dining rooms, and the staff may seat patrons on any of the floors depending on how busy it is. The interior features red oak, pale pink walls, crimson red carpeting, and crystal chandeliers. Color palette and design is similar to that of Lai Hong Lounge and Hong Kong Lounge. How: a laminated menu not only displays all the dim sum offerings, but also as a means to order. Mark as many or as little as you want, hand off to one of the staff members, and wait for the piping hot dishes and steam baskets appear before your eyes. Why: while there are no push carts here, the food here is delicious and delivers on the quintessential experience of dim sum. One cannot go wrong with; custard egg tarts, shui mai, ha gao, black bean chicken feet, steamed rice noodle rolls, steamed pork spare ribs, steamed beef tripe, congee, daikon cake, etc - just to name a few. I didn't name all of what is offered, but know that everything is superb. Service: while there's no white glove service or fancy cutlery neatly placed on each table; the staff here do things right by acknowledging their patrons, taking their orders, serving food, and consistently checking on their patrons for anything else they may want or need. Honestly, this place really does deserve the current rating. We went for dim sum on a weekend, but it wasn't packed and there was no wait. I'm not saying a great dim sum restaurant needs to be packed, but it is a flag for me. The food was just okay, but the prices were affordable comparing to other spots. I come here for dim sum often, but this was only my third time coming for dinner. We dined here before Chinese New Year and enjoyed the food, so we decided to come back for our family Chinese New Year dinner. I called to make a reservation and pre-ordered their suckling pig for the evening. The nine of us also ordered eight additional dishes: crab and fish maw soup (which I forgot to take pictures of), half a chicken, Peking duck, XO intestines, mixed seafood tofu, steak cubes with mixed mushrooms, abalone with mushrooms and bean sprouts, and a garlic vegetable dish. All the dishes were delicious. The suckling pig skin was incredibly crispy. The restaurant also gave us a complimentary steamed sponge cake, which was delicious! The ceilings are high, so it doesn't feel noisy, and the tables aren't cramped together. They have two parking lots a block away, so parking isn't an issue. Street parking is also available. There are a lot and I do mean a lot of Chinese restaurant options in the city of Millbrae. With its central location near the San Francisco International Airport and Highway 101, Hong Kong Palace is just one of many options and it is actually the newest one of them all. But the place that Hong Kong Palace took over was long established as the home of Tai Wu, which for at least a couple of decades held the title of the most in demand restaurant in all of the area that surrounds the El Camino Real. Their success literally affected everyone else in the neighborhood, as parking and traffic were affected by their popularity and a constant stream of customers lining up outside to dine there, especially for a dim sum brunch. So with new ownership taking over with a new name to boot Hong Kong Palace is now reborn, although upon entry to this relatively new business, not much has changed since the new owners took over, as they still have three floors of dining with more private large party dining accessible on floors two and three with additional rooms for karaoke singing and dining on the second floor. Upon my first visit to this updated restaurant, a group of eight diners came for dinner on a Friday evening right when they opened and honestly the place was not filled with customers. The menu at Hong Kong Palace is separated into categories including BBQ, Soup, Seafood, Meat Selection, Rice, Entrées, and their set Banquet Menus for large parties. On our initial visit we enjoyed their Soup of the Day, which was a vegetable-based soup, one Roasted Squab which was quartered into fourths, Rice Noodles and Scallops sautéed with garlic and served on a giant clam, Peking Spareribs in Sweet and Sour Sauce, Mushrooms served in gravy on a bed of Chinese Spinach, and Hong Kong Style Fried Rice served with Egg Whites. Everything that we were served tasted really delicious, as you can tell that they are cooking their cuisine in a more homestyle way of cooking at Hong Kong Palace versus that of Tai Wu, which although was a completely different restaurant, everything inside remains the same, so one would assume that many of the same players are still involved. Our total bill was $168 dollars for meal which for seven large family-style entrées, is actually pretty reasonable, and the food was good enough to warrant additional visits, especially with their location being so close to the airport and with them having their own private lot made choose to make a return visit a natural choice. That return visit would happen a few months later where we would be able to sample their morning dim sum menu on a weekend afternoon. We lucked out as their first floor dining room tends to be busy during this time of day, but there was one large table available that our party of few felt very spacious sitting at. For dim sum, we ordered their Soy Sauce Chow Fun, a portion of Roast Duck, which was a special menu item, Tamago Tofu with Shrimp, House Special Deep Fried Eggplant covered in sweet sauce, Baked BBQ Pork Buns with a sugary exterior, Fish Porridge, Beef Noodle Roll, two servings of their Beef Meatballs, two servings of their Sticky Rice Shrimp Dumplings, and two servings of their Mixed Grains served in a wrapped Lotus Leaf. The highlights here were the Tamago Tofu with Shrimp and their Deep Fried Eggplant which were unique plays on the traditional Cantonese cuisine thanks to the abundance of sauce that each dish seemed to contain. Give me some steamed white rice and you are all set with a meal unto itself. For this visit, our bill came to $83.35 which included tax but not gratuity, which considering the amount of food we received, which included enough to take home for a future meal, it was a completely satisfying experience. Hong Kong Palace has firmly ensconced themselves in the competitive Millbrae dining scene, and locals and out of towners should be lucky that they are here thriving serving hearty traditional Cantonese cuisine at affordable prices. read more

There is a small parking lot right next to the restaurant, and another larger parking lot at 400-450 El Camino which is a block or so away. Came here for dim sum with my family (group of 12ish) on a Saturday morning. We made a reservation earlier that week, so we were able to get seated right when the restaurant opened at 10am. We were seated upstairs in a large room. The restaurant was filled and there was a large wait outside as we left. It seems to get very busy on weekends. There is a list of dishes that are only $3.99 but only before 11:30am. This is a pretty good deal! My family over ordered on food and ended up taking at least 50% of our leftovers home. Overall the food was pretty standard Chinese dim sum food and decent quality. The service was a bit grumpy and not the friendliest. A few of the servers were a bit snappy when my mom asked repeatedly for them to cut the dimsum. However, the host and staff were still attentive and responsive to our asks. read more

Came on a weekday during lunch time. It was a little crowded but there's more tables and seating on the third floor! They have a menu with discounted items available on weekdays from 11 am to 12:30 pm and weekends from 10 am to 12 am, as of now. The dim sum was very solid. I enjoyed the baked BBQ pork buns and steamed chive and shrimp dumpling, which were both on the discounted menu. I also liked the tofu skin roll with pork and fried pork puff. The shrimp dumpling was a little disappointing, as the shrimp was not very crisp or fresh, and the brown sugar sponge cake was also just okay (although the texture was great). I was able to try Hong Kong Palace in Millbrae right before my flight back home and overall had a decent experience. Service was friendly and attentive from this one waiter. The egg tofu dish was one of my favorite picks and it was soft and full of flavor. The shumai and woodear mushroom dumplings were also good. On the downside, the soy sauce chow mein was very disappointing and tasted old like it had been reheated. The steamed beef tripe looked well made but was very bland and lacked flavor. It is definitely hit or miss depending on what you order, but the restaurant itself is spacious, comfortable, and quiet on a weekday morning. Great spot for Dim Sum. (Cannot comment on full menu selection) Close to airport if you have a long layover. (About 2.5 miles away) Well worth a quick expedition. Very authentic! The servers were friendly but couldn't say they were attentive as they were kind of shorthanded. Their DimSum selection was very good. We ordered quite a lot of dishes (8-9) for two people. My friend in San Francisco called me up for Dim Sum that afternoon. I was in the South Bay so I told her we should meet up in Millbrae by the Caltrain. I started looking for a traditional Dim Sum place that seemed to be good. Found Hong Kong Palace. The place is three stories high. We were sat at the bottom floor on a table for four which was perfect considering how much food we ordered. We ended up ordering a table full of food for only two of us. I had leftover for 2 more meals and all items still tasted good even after I had to rewarm them up. We ordered about 10 dishes without realizing. The menu to order at Hong Kong Palace was a two sided large laminated menu with the list of items and some pictures of some of the food. It was laminated so that you could check the items you wanted. I loved that it was so easy to order. One dish that really surprised me was the pea shoots and tofu skin in a white broth that was absolutely delicious. They had a picture of it and thats why we ordered it. Plus we needed some greens with our meal :) Service was good not anything exceptional but it was great for a nice slow saturday. Good customer service when they give you tea and bring you to a nice table . We arrived at 12:30 pm and it took them a whole 10 minutes before anyone came to take our order . That was odd because we were the only table of new customers. May be they were afraid that we argued with them about the cheaper dim sum price on the lunch menu . There are a lot of Items to choose from . Food temperature is very hot , which is essential to Cantonese cuisine. I have been eating dim sum all over the Bay Area and from many different cities . The taste of the dim sum here is average and not excellent. They look better than how they taste . In Milbrae and South SF there are many choices . This will not be one of my top choices . read more

I ordered a bunch of dim sum dishes from the early bird menu as well as the regular menu. The orders came out with surprisingly fast speed. The duck feet in soy was my favorite, I also a bunch of dim sum items like chickie feet, siu mai, tofu wrapped veggies, wood ear dumpling's, the roast duckie is certainly a must, had I known it was that good I would have ordered the whole duckie. One thing that turns me off is when they try to change up traditional recipes like the lotus wrapped sticky rice with "healthier grains", yuck and double yuck, if I wanted healthy, I would simply go to the nearest park and eat grass. Had dinner here with my family and it was a pretty terrible experience. When we came it we could only order from a few set menus and we chose one for $598. It was a complete disappointment to say the least and most definitely NOT worth the price. -every dish came out lukewarm at best --not a single dish was hot when it arrived at our table -one dish came out every 20-25 minutes --the wait was insane...we finished each dish within 10 minutes -they ran out of the dessert from the set menu and just brought out something completely different without telling us --it even looked like someone dug through it before bringing it out to us -the staff claimed to be busy but only about half the restaurant was full -nearly everyone was still left hungry after the meal was over I highly recommend NOT coming here. My parents told me that this place has discounted items prior to 11am. We arrived prior to opening on a Sunday to join the other patrons who wanted to take part in the discount. We were seated immediately, but that was the last thing during this meal that was done in a timely manner. We ordered by placing quantities on the dry erase menu and waited. And waited. And waited. My college economics class told me that in order to make money off discounted items, many units have to be sold (see any store's business model). At Hong Kong Palace, they went away from this business idea and decided to make their patrons wait 45 minutes before any food came out (reminder that we were one of the FIRST groups to be seated). We requested spicy mustard 3 times to 3 different staff members before it arrived at our table. Despite the wait, the food was good, but nothing to write home to my parents about. We tried to flag down staff members to pay for our meal and were ignored. This place must: 1. have not prepared anything ahead of time (but it didn't taste amazingly fresh) or 2. Be making money hand over fist and don't care about pleasing customers. I'd happily pay full price to avoid stewing in my own hunger waiting for food to come. Our go-to dim sum place has always been The Kitchen. Today, they are reserved for private party. So, we went across the street to try this spot. This is our first time since they change name a year or two ago. The first and second floors are packed. As we are a party of five, they have asked us to go to the third floor because it will be a lot more spacious. We are all surprised at how spacious 3/F. All tables setting is like banquet style. Servers are attentive and courteous, but it seems they don't have the organizational down yet. A lot of chatters and confusion on where or who ordered the food. About the dim sum, I think there are a few they do really well. - shrimp dumplings - pork Shiu Mai - Chinese sugar donuts (as good as Koi Palace) - Baked BBQ pork buns - steamed custard buns The rest of the dim sum are ok. THIS REVIEW IS FOR WEI WEI TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE We ordered several dishes, but the sweet and sour pork with pineapple was completely unacceptable. The pineapple was spoiled. I knew immediately after the first bite and stopped eating it. The taste and smell were clearly wrong. After returning home, I began to feel very uncomfortable and ended up throwing up. This made the situation even more serious. Serving food in this condition is unsafe and irresponsible. The service was just as bad. Our server, Wei Wei, had a terrible attitude from the moment she seated us. She appeared unhappy and unwelcoming. No one checked on us during the entire meal. Staff only came to drop off the food and later to bring the bill. There was no service at all, yet we were still expected to tip. If the service had been polite and professional, I would have been more understanding about the food issue. However, because the service was so poor and there was no care or follow-up, I have decided to report this incident to the health department.
