Ordered some takeout from Yuanbao Jiaozi to try out a variety of their menu items. On the bright side, the online ordering process was smooth and the food was ready exactly as promised when I went to pick it up. As for the food itself, it was a bit of a mixed bag. The Highlights: - Lamb Carrot Dumplings & Pork Shrimp Chive Egg Dumplings: These were definitely the stars of the meal! Both varieties tasted fresh, flavorful, and well-balanced. If you order from here, these are highly recommended. The Mediocre: - Xiao Long Bao: These fell a bit flat for me. The filling inside was a little too hard, lacking that delicate, tender texture you want in a good soup dumpling. - Napa Cabbage Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil: They weren't the worst, but they didn't stand out either. I've definitely had other versions with better flavor elsewhere. - Hot Spicy Beef Tendon: The flavor profile was okay, but the texture was off. Yuanbao Jiaozi was on New York Times list so I tried it out in the SF location. I found out that they have a location in the Millbrae / Burlingame area so I gave it a try! The new place is super spacious and big. We went for lunch on the weekend and got seated pretty much immediately. Compared to the SF location, this location has a lot of tables. We got the pan fried dumplings and the chili oil dumplings. The chili oil dumplings were pork and cabbage. The pan fried ones were chicken and corn. We liked the pork and cabbage for the filling but like the pan fried for the wrapping. You can't go wrong with the pork and cabbage, I highly recommend getting it as a filling. They also selling frozen dumplings in a freezer as you walk into the restaurant. It's on the left side of the entrance! Highly recommend grabbing some frozen dumplings from them as well. read more

I was looking for an Asian restaurant for a light early dinner on Saturday, and found Yuanbao Jiaozi. My fellow Yelpers didn't disappoint. This place met everything I was looking for: plenty of parking (inside Burlingame Plaza), near SFO, efficient service, and high ratings. When my daughter and I arrived a little before 5:30pm, they were already pretty full. By the time we left, a little after 6pm, there're people waiting at the door. We got seated right away. Service was minimal. We helped ourselves to the pitcher of water on the table. After looking at the menu on the table, we placed our order by scanning a QR code. Since we're not too hungry. We ordered one appetizer and one noodle dish to share. The special mix salad came pretty quickly. We ordered "less spicy", and it had the perfect amount of heat. All the ingredients tasted fresh and the dish had a bit of everything we wanted to try. I liked the tofu skin the best, and my daughter loved the crunchy cucumber. It would be even better if they included lotus roots as well. It took a little while for the house special beef noodle soup (less spicy) to arrive, but it was totally worth the wait. It came piping hot. The broth was very flavorful, with the right amount of red pepper. It wasn't oily at all. The beef was super tender. Was looking for a place for dinner after picking the wife up at SFO after a long flight. Also wanted to let rush hour traffic die down. Succeeded on both counts here. It's conveniently located not too far off highway 101 immediately south of the airport. We came in just before 6 on a Monday and there were only a couple tables occupied. They have the scan a QR on the table to do your ordering so I started with that but the waiter came by before I could get through all of that on my phone and said he could just take our order, which was much easier. We got the Dan Dan noodles and an order of Chicken and Mushroom dumplings in soup. Both were excellent. The Dan Dan was nicely spiced with good flavor and not too numbing or bitter, which I have experienced with Dan Dan at other places. Place was clean and bright and very comfortable. Service is pretty hands-off as you order via the online menu. Food came quickly. You can also buy them frozen in the front as well. For xiaolongbao you can't go wrong with the classic pork option. Meat is moist and they have a lot of soup inside. Skin isn't too thick. The crab roe one is a fun upgrade when they have it available. For steamed dumplings, chicken & corn and the pork & Napa cabbage are solid choices. You can make your own dipping sauce with the soy sauce, black vinegar, and chili oil at the table. For appetizers, we usually get the pig ears or the cucumber or mixed salads. I want to come and try their noodle soups sometime (hard to divert from dumplings though). We have been to Dumpling Empire, Tasty Place and a few of the others along El Camino in Millbrae over the years as well. Yuanbao Jiaozi specializes in Northern Chinese cuisine - primarily dumplings, evidenced by the relative translation to "money dumplings" - with their Dongbei owners who started their first location in San Francisco. It is said that their specialty is the shiitake mushroom & sole fish dumpling, which is more uncommon amongst its pork and chicken brethren within dumpling shops. In the peninsula (and probably a majority of the bay area), this is my favorite jiaozi-style dumpling shop, and the consistently packed house and regulars can attest to that. Despite being popular, the process of parking, getting a table, food service, and wrapping up is actually really smooth and quick. On top of that, their prices are very fair in this economy. You can choose to order via QR or with a server, but I find it much more convenient through the phone. For a good meal, I like to share an appetizer, noodle, and dumpling; as such, I'll divvy up this review in those sections. - Appetizers These are cold dishes (liangban) tossed in primarily soy and chili oil. You get a good portion for the price, and they taste so fresh. I've had friends who wouldn't normally eat stuff like this say they like it, as the sauce is good and evenly distributed. Most of the items are spicy or have a hint of it. - Noodle The house special beef noodle soup is one of my favorites in the bay; it's hard to try another noodle soup here. You can adjust the spice level, but it's pretty pleasant even at its spiciest. The beef broth is much more clean and clear than a majority of other places, and the beef is also cut into cute smaller cubes. The noodle is light and smooth with a small chew. I've also had the dan dan mixed w/ minced meat & bean paste noodles, which was disappointing as it mostly tasted like mala in oily sesame-peanut sauce, intentionally dried out ground pork, and random slices of raw onion. It made my dad cough a lot and my mouth sting, so you'll need spice tolerance for this. - Dumpling First off, their dumpling skin is similar to a chewy al dente at the fold, and soft on the body. Second, they are smaller than typical, which makes them perfect for popping in your mouth. You know they are fresh as you can view them being made in the back. You can choose the dumplings simply steamed, in soup, in chili oil, or pan-fried (potstickers). If you want them crunchy, go with potstickers. If you want a warm, soul-soothing comfort meal, go with the soup (though I warn it's very subtle and tastes like bland broth mixed with 10% chicken broth and 10% seaweed). If you want more dumpling per price, go plain. I don't recommend the chili oil dumplings since they didn't have too much of a taste, and I needed to add my own sauces anyways (there is chili oil on the table). The fillings are minced quite well and taste fresh, and no ingredient is overpowering. The flavors are more muted (less salted and leaner) compared to grocery store dumplings, so they taste healthier. Chicken is light, pork is typical, beef is beefy, lamb is slightly gamey. Fish softens up the filling and brings a fluffier texture. Shrimp has a firmer texture. There is one dumpling that is exclusive to this Burlingame location - the uni & pork dumpling, which comes as a pair. It's just a light meat dumpling with a briny ocean taste, which is interesting but not something I'd order more than once. Worth trying, though. Their xiao long bao is solid and satisfies the craving, though I wouldn't say a contender to places like DTF. The skin is soft, the meat is juicy, and the soup is just right. You can buy frozen dumplings here as well for a decent price (currently about 80 cents per piece). If you're looking for dumplings and beef noodle soup, this is a good pick whether you're a local or just visiting the area. read more

We were party of nine Friday night. Our friend made a reservation for 6pm. Good idea as the place was very busy. Located in a shopping center there were plenty of parking spaces. Hubby and I were the first to arrive. Our table was ready so we sat down. We noticed how comfortable the chairs were. We QR'd the menu and took a look at the various offerings. There were also hard copies of the menu on the table. Of the nine of us, two decided not to participate in family style eating as they weren't keen on many of the menu choices. The remainder of us decided to share a couple of starters, two soup noodles, and several different types of dumplings. No photo opportunities as the food was just dumped on the table with mumbled explanations of each. Then each plate was passed around the table. Personally I found sharing of soup noodles among seven people very challenging. I say each serving can easily be shared by two people. The dumplings are made on site. You can see the workers in the kitchen behind a glass window. Food came quickly. Don't expect much service. A couple of people in our group had been to the outpost in the Sunset district in the City. We got the house special beef noodle soup, cabbage and pork dumplings, shredded potato and pig ear apps. Shredded potato and pig ear apps both had too much vinegar, sour and not good. Also the pig ear was cut so thin couldn't really enjoy it. House special beef noodle soup - soup didn't have a deep beef soup flavours, kind of bland even with the hot sauce. The meat was good. I love Yuanbao Jiaozi in SF's Sunset District so was excited to see they opened an outpost down in Millbrae. Free parking is nice down here (unfortunately, this urbanist must begrudgingly admit.) This location is much larger and airy (and the menu is also considerably larger!) You can see them making the dumplings in-house in the back. My mom and I loved Steamed pork Napa Cabbage & Pork Dumpling and House Special Beef Noodle Soup--that's a dish we tend to get at most Chinese restaurants if they have it. The beef was tender and flavorful, giving some weight to the fairly-light soup broth. Noodles were thick and flavorful--loved the consistency and thickness. Also quite a bit of vegetables in there--we love healthy! Dumplings were yummy of course--after all, that is what they're known for! Service was alright. Seemed a bit slow. On a recently trip my friend and I shared an order of pork, shrimp, chive egg dumplings in soup, the spicy beef noodle soup and marinated cucumbers which was the perfect combination. We were hungry and this really satisfied our cravings for Chinese comfort food. Loved the dumplings, the pork, shrimp, and chive really made the dumplings so flavorful and umami. Pretty good dumpling spot! I forgot to take pictures but I also tried three types of soup dumplings: beef, pork, and pork and crab. My favorite was still the classic pork, but all of them were good. While the flavor was nice, I feel like it could've been more soupy. I also really enjoyed the pork and cabbage dumplings in chili oil which had plenty of yummy filling and a deliciously fragrant sauce to cover. The dan dan noodles and spicy beef noodles were delicious too! Although everything labeled "spicy" here is very very mild. The first three items came out on time, but the potstickers never arrived. I followed up twice with the staff and still got nothing. After waiting more than 20 minutes after my first follow-up, I decided to cancel the order. There was no effort to accommodate the situation, and they still expected a tip at the end. Pretty busy on a Thursday evening around 8pm but my party of 3 was seated right away.
