My sister in law ordered for delivery for her Mom, my MIL's, birthday. Food was delivered on time but driver just left it at the gate, doorbell n left. We don't order delivery too often so we were shocked to find the food just placed on the floor. We ordered 2x Hainan chicken rice plate - it was okay. I've never personally had it before so as is, it's very plain. Not much flavor. They do give you 3 little sauce containers but I had no idea what how it was supposed to be so I ate it as is and so did the kids. They weren't a fan of the soft chicken skin, peeled it off and to the garbage it went. Pork belly w/ charcoal buns were pretty good. The buns were a little tough but if you eat it with the pork it tastes better. The pork alone was good. Beef kimcheese fried rice with egg was delicious. By far my favorite dish. I'm not a huge fan of kimchee at all but this one was really good IMO. Just enough spice and it had me coming back for more. I would come back just for this. Shrimp Wonton (Noodle?) Soup - soup base was good and the shrimp wontons were delicious but we were MISSING noodles. Our order was incomplete and we were pretty disappointed because for birthdays, it's a must to have noodles (for long life), and we didn't get our noodles! I feel the soup would've been a lot better had the noodles been with it. I was a bit upset, especially since the order says noodle soup. All in all, not too bad. I might give the hainan chicken another try but not any time soon. From their photos on the menu, it seems as if we also didn't receive any salad. I don't know if that's only for dine-in but it'd be nice to let customers know what they are or aren't getting. It is a bit pricey considering the portion you get. I guess we got semi lucky that my kids don't eat kimchee, my husband was at work, and both grandfathers don't like to eat outside of their comfort zone because for the price we paid, there wouldn't have been enough food. Been here a couple of times. Overall, I would say that I really like this place, just not for the price. It's a super casual cafe restaurant. They play modern Chinese music, and overall, I like the ambiance. All their dim sums are frozen, not freshly made in house. The Baked Tomato Pork Chop Rice was on the soggy side, as compared to crispy, the way that Koi Palace makes it. Speaking of Koi Palace, Stick & Steam is own by the same people. While the quality is not super high, they are charging at a higher end restaurant price. Other than that, I would say the food is not too bad, if compared to other Chinese cafes. The food is flavorful and well presented. The restaurant itself is pretty small. Never had any problems with parking. Just don't follow the line of cars going into in-and-out. We ordered the following: Ha Gow* - larger than I normally get, it was good! Beef Shu Mai* - wrapped in spinach, it was average. Crispy Chicken - I really liked how it was super crispy, but not dried out, they did a good job of preparing this dish. It was served with a salt and a sweet sauce on the side, along with rice. Pork Belly with charcoal buns - pork belly was tender with the outside crisp. One was cooked perfectly, the other piece was slightly overcooked but still good. Cucumbers - served in a cold dish in a garlic sauce and sesame seeds. Note this is a cold dish! Green beans - not sure what it was seasoned with, but it was really well-flavored! Just got back from lunch here with my family. We did take out but sat at one of the outdoor tables on a kinda gloomy day. I have been wanting to come here for awhile now since I heard that they are owned by the same folks who own Koi Palace which is one of my fave dim sum restaurants so I was curious what S&S had to offer. The interior was not what I expected as it was much more dark and casual than what I was used to at Koi. Of course this might have to do with COVID affecting their normal desired setup. First thing I noticed when I looked at the menu were the prices. I had a feeling the place was not going to be like SF cheap takeout dim sum since this is the peninsula and it was owned by Koi. The service was average but gets the job done. The food took about 20-25 minutes on a Saturday morning 15 minutes after they opened. This is what I ordered: Wonton noodle soup ($12.25) - Was good but wish there were more wonton for this price. Hainan Chicken rice ($14.25) - The chicken was tender and moist but lacked some flavor but this was remedied with the sauces. The rice flavor and aroma were excepional. XLB Trio ($5.95) - Soupy with great flavor and textures. Siu Mai ($4.95) - Tasty but a bit on the small side. Egg yolk lava buns ($4.25) - This was excellent and my favorite thing ordered. The eg yolk was warm and runny just like it should be. YUM! Overall I would say the food is 4 stars and the value is 3 starts so it's more like 3.5 stars overall. Excellent shelter in place option. Not a wide variety of take out dim sum, BUT, everything is of excellent quality. Dim sum to go is frozen and you take him and simply steam. I can vouch for the sticky rice items (wrapped in leaf); the shrimp dumpling; and all of the Shiu Mai's with my favorite being the abalone one. It makes for great emergency food and if frozen will last a long time. I have two sticky rices that have been in my fridge for Months and I'm not worried. If they don't taste good, I'll update this. We were by the airport and found this place. We had the salted yolk fish skin which was so good. The two dumplings we ordered were their version of har gaw and the pan fried soup dumpling. Both were good. The har gaw was such a different take on the dish and I've never seen it done like this before. It was fried with a tasty crunchy topping. We also got two main dishes. The hainan chicken plate was good but I kinda wish it had the broth on the side that is usually served with it at other places. They have both outdoor seating and limited indoor seating. The hainan chicken is soft, juicy, and flavorful. I really enjoyed the flavored rice that accompanies the chicken. The orange sauce was pretty good but the hainan chicken rice lacked flavor, the chicken lacked salt, and it wasn't boneless. I liked the orange sauce and the chicken was warm. The string beans were pretty good and the dim sum I sampled tasted pretty good as well. I also sampled the hainan chicken soup and that was much heartier and tastier. Service 3/5: First off, there were no utensils and napkins at the table when we sat down, so we had to ask for them. Water also took a while to come. Today was my first time eating here post-pandemic. I have moved farther away and takes much more effort to drive up now, but since I was in the area, I decided to dine in! The first thing I noticed was that the menu is quite different now. They've cut back on the skewers (almost all except pork belly as part of the charcoal bun set) and increased the variety of noodle soup options and added baked rice dishes. There are also some new tapas on the menu. Because today was foggy and chilly, I was craving a noodle soup. I got the drunken chicken noodle soup, and my boyfriend got the shrimp wonton soup. We also got salted egg yolk fries (my favorite staple!), typhoon ha gao (LOVE the fried garlic flakes!), and the string beans. Overall, the food was great. The drunken chicken noodle soup was very flavorful and had the right proportions. My boyfriend devoured his shrimp wonton soup. And the tapas were even better than I remember. As a subtly sweet treat, we also got egg yolk lava buns, which was the perfect balance of filling and bun and SO delicious. It makes me sad that I no longer live close by and can't frequent this restaurant as often, but I'm definitely going to stop in anytime I'm in the area for some great food :) read more

I have tried the Hainan chicken plate, typhoon ha gao, and of course the salted duck egg fries. The Hainan chicken was the best I've had in the Bay Area. I like that it wasn't cold and it was super tender. Typhoon ha gao was really unique and had some spice. I liked the crispies that came with it. Salted duck egg flavor chips are a hit in Singapore, but it is my first time seeing the flavoring on fries. I've been here twice and ordered these fries both times. They came out differently actually. The first time was dry and the second time was wetter. I preferred the wetter version. They are nearby the Bart station which is convenient. My favorite place for chicken rice in the Bay Area, and I will stamp this having lived over 10 years in Singapore (yes Hainanese Chicken Rice is a Singaporean dish, a little interesting but true). Pro tip is to get the half chicken and rice separately instead of getting the chicken rice itself since the portion of the chicken rice isn't that great in my opinion. I agree with some of the reviews that mentioned about the disappointing price-to-portion ratio, though the prices for half and full chicken are pretty respectable, and the prices for drinks are also pretty in-sync with other places. I've also tried the skewers before and they're pretty decent, albeit with the small portion. It's also right next to the 101 and like 3 minutes away from the airport so if you're looking for a meal before your flight, this can be an option too! This is an awesome small dim-sum restaurant located in the little plaza right next to In-N-Out and the train station in Millbrae. We originally called to place a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday night but the person who answered told us not to worry as they were not busy at all and to just come in whenever. Ah! They definitely deserve busier nights - they are very good! We came in at 7pm as expected and we were the only ones in the restaurant, so we were seated and served immediately. The spot eventually filled up as the night went on. We ordered the full hainan chicken, the XLB TRIO (original, crab, & truffle), bbq pork buns, typhoon ha gao, pork belly w/ charcoal buns, and Chinese broccoli. I love typhoon ha gao and I normally order it whenever I go to dim sum spots, and theirs was really good. The original and truffle XLB were delicious too! (Sadly I was not a fan of the crab - it tasted very off to me, but my MIL really enjoyed it.) I'd love to come back to try the other soup dumplings and regular siu mai. For the price, this place takes the cake - there are many other dim sum spots on the peninsula that will charge $10-12 for three pieces of ha gao but here you can get them for $5.50 - SUPER, SUPER WORTH! read more

This place was soooo tasty! I had a strawberry and cream boba tea slush, the shu mai, a steak skewer, dumplings, and the pan seared string beans. The atmosphere was cozy and the people working were all very nice. My bill was just over $30 - so not super cheap, but also not too pricey. I will definitely be back next time I am over this way, but will likely just order the string beans and allllll the dumplings I can eat - yes, they were that good. Ok if your menu has anything "salty egg" - I'm in! Wanted a little snack while in the area and thought we'd give this a try - and boy am I glad we did.
