Marvin is a gem. The service was awesome from start to finish. The classic chopped salad was perfect. The fried artichokes came with bonus leaves and a scrumptious fennel salad with dill and sun-dried tomatoes. Then we shared the pork chop, which was honestly one of the best pork dishes I've had. We paired it with the 2021 Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain "Sous Roche," a Burgundy priced under $100 on the restaurant list, and the combination was exceptional. Marvin is such a cute spot, especially the interior. I've eaten outside before and, being right on Beverly, it can definitely get a little crowded and noisy out there, so this time we went inside around 5:30 on a Tuesday and it was super calm and relaxed. The service staff inside was incredibly friendly and accommodating. I ordered the steak frites and asked if I could substitute a small side salad instead of one of the huge entrée salads, which they happily did. The steak was honestly perfect -- a beautiful prime cut cooked exactly medium rare with one of the best crusts I've had in a long time. Seriously delicious. I cook steak at home all the time and still can't get a crust anywhere close to what they managed here. The fries were great too. Including the salad and tip, the meal came to about $100, which in my opinion is completely fair for the quality. It's definitely the kind of place where you go to treat yourself a little. The portion was generous enough that I couldn't even finish the steak, and the leftovers made an amazing sandwich the next day. Love this spot. We ordered the salami, burrata, & honey toast to start- it was sweet & savory with a good amount of burrata on toasted bread and I would definitely order it again. The truffle french fries came piled high, crispy & hot. The rigatoni spicy vodka pasta had a good spice to it and hit the spot- I just love a great spicy vodka pasta. The tomahawk pork chop was tender & juicy- definitely shareable and great combination with the mashed potatoes on the side. For dessert we ordered the toffee date cake & tiramisu. I came here for my birthday and it didn't disappoint. It was delicious! This neighbourhood Italian/French bistro felt cozy and relaxed - a true neighbourhood gem. Everything that we ordered was perfect! The server was nice and laidback. My favorites were the potato chips & Jamon Iberico, white anchovy toast, rigatoni bolognese and spicy vodka. Marvin is a great spot for date night or a cozy gathering with friends. It's not a huge restaurant, so it feels very intimate. The lighting is pretty dim, but it does add to the vibe. The food is honestly really solid. I loveeee their Caesar salad. It's so savory and has just the right amount of dressing. The squash blossoms are delicious and not too heavily fried. They come with heirloom tomatoes tossed in a beautiful olive oil dressing. The porcini soup is very flavorful, but not too creamy. For the entree, I love the rigatoni spicy vodka. The fresh basil provides the perfect contrast from the savory, buttery pasta sauce. Noodles cooked to perfection. The steak frites was good, but honestly wouldn't get again. It wasn't anything special and lacks flavor as compared to their other dishes. I really love Marvin and plan to be back in the future. The one thing I will say is that their service is quick, but the servers I've interacted with have never been friendly per se. A friend was in town and staying by the Beverly Center and wanted to get together for dinner nearby. With that instruction combined with the 2026 Red Dining Book, we wound up at the small neighborhood wine bar, Marvin. There are handful of outdoor tables on the side walk under a blue and white awning, we found ourselves dining inside under a ceiling of cans and colorful twinkle lights near the packed bar. The staff quickly greeted us and gave us our choice of tables as it hadn't quite filled up yet. The spicy vodka rigatoni lived up to all of the other reviews praises and is arguably one of the best ones I've had in LA (it also packs a bit of slow heat). Our waiter was honest when we asked about fries or truffle fries, his recommendation of regular fries delivered (the aioli was excellent with splash of lemon). The brussel sprouts were pan roasted well. The chicken parm (was a tad too salty) was huge and comes with a pesto pasta on the side. read more

Marvin is on the smaller side and has the feel of a cozy neighborhood café--great for date night and easy conversation. We started by sharing the burrata toast and squash blossoms, both of which were genuinely delicious and set a promising tone. Unfortunately, the mains didn't live up to that start. The veal chop was cooked with a heavy char that masked much of the flavor, leaving it tender but fairly nondescript. The steak frites were more disappointing--the steak was overdone and lacked tenderness, though the fries were good. What really soured the experience, however, was the billing. When we asked for the check, we paid promptly and added what we believed was an appropriate tip. Only later did I notice a small line on the bill stating that a "20% service charge is automatically added TO HELP PAY KITCHEN & MANAGERS, AS WELL AS SERVERS. ANY EXTRA TIP GOES TO THE SERVERS."--and that it is not considered a tip. So in effect, we paid 20% in service charges plus 20% tip--bringing the total to 40% on top of already high menu prices. That brought the cost of the meal from S240 to $340.80 or $166.54 per person for what amounted to fine appetizers and mediocre mains, and feels completely out of line. If a restaurant chooses to add a service charge, that's their prerogative--but it should be made abundantly clear, not tucked away in fine print that's easy to miss in the moment. Transparency matters. I left feeling more frustrated than satisfied when I realized our mistake the next day, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. read more

We went and sat at the bar for a last minute dinner out and had heard great things about this spot. However, we were quickly greeted by some very cold and off putting staff as we sat down. She was not very friendly and clearly had an attitude. The food was alright but for not for the price ($25+ per item) I expect it to be better. Like $22 for some toast....come on guys. Portion sizes were decent though. On top of the very expensively priced menu items, they also automatically include 20% of your bill as a service fee - INSANITY. Our experience certainly did not warrant 20% and the fact that restaurants think this is okay to do is beyond me. Big red flag of poor management and clearly price gauging. Cute little spot in weho. I've been here a couple times cause I crave their spicy rigatoni vodka pasta. Service is always good and they're always friendly, they also have a good selection of wines which is great when everyone wants something different. I loooovee the mussels however I wish they used higher quality seafood. The recipe is amazing but felt not so fresh. I also wanted to note that they do auto grat here 20%. Which is fine I guess, since I normally tip 20% anyway, I just wasn't expecting that for a place like this and was caught off guard. Marvin sits walking distance from where we live, and after seeing it so many times over the past few years, we finally decided to give it a try. We actually gave it two tries over the span of a few weeks - once for a date night for me and my wife, and the second to bring a friend who was visiting from out of town. Our experiences both times were very similar, so I wanted to write a review after we gave it another try. My issue with Marvin isn't about the food, as the food was delicious, but rather about the service. Before our first visit, we had made a reservation a few days in advance. However, when we arrived about 5 minutes before our reservation, it was as though we never made it in the first place. At first they couldn't find a table for us, and when they did offer us a table about 10 minutes after our reservation time, it was a table tucked in behind the door - not the best place to have a romantic dinner. With all the traffic going in and out, we would have been right in the flow of people and lost in the busy coming and goings of the staff and other patrons. We ended up being offered seats at the bar, and just took what we could get as we were hungry and already 20 minutes past our reservation time. We ended up ordering pasta and the burger, and they were both delicious. I would absolutely say that we really enjoyed our meals, but sitting at the bar felt like an afterthought versus an actual reservation. During our second visit, it pretty much mirrored our first. This time the restaurant was fairly empty, so we were given a better table. The only issue was that since the restaurant was so empty with plenty of open tables, they chose to seat us by the front corner server's station, wedged between that and another table where the people were already lounging back and spread out. It seems that they could have sat us anywhere but chose to just keep the two tables together in the tight corner for ease for the server. When we placed our order, our friend who was visiting ordered a couple of bottles of rather expensive wine. When he placed the order, the server seemed happy that he was spending nearly $200 on some wine, but after that the service fell apart. We ordered some soup (delicious) as well as a pasta, the chicken and a steak with sides (potatoes and brussel sprouts). The steak came out cooked perfectly, and the soup and pastas were delicious. The sides, however, lacked seasoning and flavor, and ended up going uneaten. Throughout the meal, whenever we tried to get the server's attention, he seemed more intent on cleaning and paperwork than he was on checking in on us - it was difficult to say the least to get either of the two server's attention. They did seem particularly attentive to the other table where they seemed to know a few of the other patrons. One example is when we did finally get one of them to come over, my wife asked for some lemons for her meal, and after about 5 minutes of waiting, the other server brought out some sort of sauce that we didn't order. Needless to say, we were a bit confused. Overall we really enjoyed our meals, aside from the sides, and made the best of our time with our friend. The issue with Marvin isn't the food, as the food overall was delicious, negating the sides, but the rather the issue is with the overall service. As much as I wanted to love Marvin as it's literally a 2-3 minute walk from our house, having had the same experience twice in a row, only a few weeks apart, would make me hesitate to go back. Maybe the 3rd time with he the charm, but we just don't feel the desire to test that out right now. So overall, really good food, just without the service to match. read more

I want to start by saying the food was excellent. Unfortunately, the service was extremely poor and dismissive--to the point where it made us feel uncomfortable. After experiencing it firsthand, I'm not surprised by the existing reviews. A 3.6 rating in this area is very low, especially when you're spending $400+. I told him I can't make one online since it's a party of 8 and can't call at any other time and he said "it's pretty standard to not call at this time" I've never been told this from a restaurant establishment in my entire life. So creamy, refreshing with a hint of garlic and olive oil...You got me at that first bite and every bite after was even better! The Spicy Rigatoni Pasta was something else, the sauce was divine! And then the Prime NY Steak Frite was cooked to perfection, flavorful with a slight char on the outside and the fries were excellent! For dessert we had the Toffee Date Cake and yes it's amazing!!! He took our order and then never once checked back to see if we needed anything. The worst part was when the bill came and we saw a 20% service fee added, for a table of three. Since when is a 20% service charge applied to parties of three? That's typically reserved for groups of six or more. When servers know they're automatically getting 20% no matter what, it really removes any incentive to actually provide good service. I so badly wanted to like this place. I had seen it always packed and heard wonderful things for years. I finally tried it recently and felt like I was met with disappointment after disappointment. We left maybe about a fourth of the pasta untouched (which for two very hungry people who tried to make the most of it speaks to what we thought of it). Service: they were nice, though a bit aloof. When we kindly asked if the pasta is always *that* al dente, they merely explained that yes and informed us that we can of course request it more cooked next time. I Personally, I think they could have done more to address it and see if they could remedy anything for us, though of course not necessary would have still been a nice gesture. We ordered a selection: SALAMI BURRATA HONEY TOAST ($20) Best thing on the menu! Creamy, cheesy, sweet, with crispy fluffy toast. Would come again just for this. I had the salami on the side and found it easier to eat that way. TOFFEE DATE CAKE ($14) Caramely and saucy. My next favorite dish. Sooo moist. New York vibes in Beverly Grove! Super crowded and a nice spot to go for a date or group. We were a big group friends so even though we had a reservation it took them a while to seat us. But they made up for it and sent us some apps on the house. I loved loved loved the hamachi crudo it was amazing. The arugula fennel salad and chopped salad were very good too. I didn't like the Caesar salad it was way too fishy. Squash blossoms and truffle fries were a hit too. For entrees: We got the branzino and burger which were great too!
