Great Food, But…read more... I stopped into the Hickory Bar and Grill while in the Hermitage area. The Hickory Bar and Grille has been around since 1998, and it is a local restaurant serving American cuisine, steaks, seafood dishes and pub-style foods. I actually went there to try one of their grilled items, but ended up having a Seafood Jambalaya from the featured menu. This was a very good take on Jambalaya as it was packed with fresh seafood, clams, and other related ingredients. I did have one glaring issue with the dish and the service. The Jambalaya had baby clams in it; however, the server did not warn me that the baby clams were in their shells. In that thick jambalaya broth, which I stirred and actually looked at before eating, the baby clams were well hidden. I took a few spoonfuls of the Jamabalaya, and on the third or fourth mouthful, I had a mouthful of clam shells. This was not cool, as I ended up with a small cut on my gums, nothing like the taste of blood while dining. The server did not drop a bowl for the shells on the table, so I did not expect the dish to have shells in it. She also did not mention that the dish had shells when she brought it to the table. I wasn't too happy that I had to pull chunks of clamshells out of my mouth either. This is an example of poor communication. The kitchen staff should have told the waitstaff that the jambalaya had shells in it, and the servers should have asked at the very least, "What's in it ? " before their shift. Another server came by the table and asked how everything was, and when I told them that the dish had shells in it, it did not faze her either; she just said ' oh yeah,' and sort of chuckled and walked away, no apology or action. I may try the Hickory Bar and Grille again one day, but I will go for what I originally went there for, steak or another grilled meat.

A difficult evening handled with kindness and integrity…read more My wife and I visited Smoke on the Water during the very busy D-Day weekend in Conneaut. Our experience did not begin smoothly. Somehow we were initially overlooked, and after ordering we waited about an hour and a half before receiving our food. One of my orders, the brisket, was also accidentally missed. Naturally, after such a long wait we became frustrated. However, what impressed me most was how the restaurant handled the situation afterward. The manager came personally to our table, spoke to us very kindly, sincerely apologized, and made sure our food finally arrived. I told him that I understood how exceptionally busy the restaurant was and that I was happy once we finally had our meal. Then, when we were ready to pay, we were told that our entire bill had been taken care of. I actually insisted that I wanted to pay, but they would not accept payment. That gesture was far more than I expected. Mistakes can happen, especially during an extremely busy event weekend. What tells me much more about a business is how they respond when something goes wrong. Smoke on the Water took responsibility and treated us with generosity and respect. I have no complaint about the restaurant. My only food criticism is that the pork ribs were much too salty for my taste. Otherwise, we enjoyed finally sitting down, eating, and enjoying the waterfront atmosphere. Thank you to the manager and staff at Smoke on the Water. You turned what could have been a very disappointing experience into one that left me with a great deal of respect for your business. That is good customer service, and it deserves to be recognized.

The elegant atmosphere, complete with white tablecloths and candlelit tables, makes for a memorable dining experience. The service was absolutely exceptional from start to finish. Our appetizer was phenomenal, especially the crab cake--it was one of the highlights of the meal. We also tried the crab mac & cheese, which was rich, flavorful, and definitely worth ordering. The portions are on the smaller side, but by the end of the meal we were completely satisfied. Our only disappointment was the fish entrées, as both were a bit overcooked. Aside from that, everything else was excellent. Overall, it's a gorgeous restaurant with outstanding service, delicious appetizers, and a wonderful atmosphere. We'd gladly return and would recommend it for anyone looking for a special night out.

The restaurant appeared to be clean and for a week night there was a decent crowd. I was pleasantly greeted by the hostess and my server was also very friendly. I typically have to be in a mood for a seafood boil but I had eaten at the same restaurant 3 days straight and wanted something different. I played it safe and did the snow crab and shrimp boil in a garlic butter sauce that was very tasty. The corn and sausage were also good. I washed it down with a cold Stella. Overall I have no complaints and would eat here again.

My boyfriend and I weren't really into the King Cajun Seafood Special Sauce. I usually go for house special sauces since they're usually good, but this one just didn't hit the spot. We ordered the hot spice level, but it wasn't spicy at all, and the sauce had this creamy taste--maybe they added flour or cornstarch to thicken it? I prefer my seafood boil sauce to be zesty and spicy. We ended up ordering a side of Cajun garlic butter sauce instead, and that was way better in my opinion. I also wish I had asked for a side of lemon slices (my bad), it would've made the flavors pop more with some extra zest and tang. One thing I really liked about the restaurant was that their seafood sizes were enormous! The shrimp and crawfish were jumbo-sized, and the Dungeness crab was packed with meat. Oh, and a heads up, when we ordered extra corn, we thought it would be three cut pieces, but I think it was actually three whole corn cut into thirds. So yeah, no need to order extra corn unless you really love it. We ended up leaving with a whole bag of corn. I guess that will be my lunch and dinner for tomorrow.
