Because "Bar" is front and center in the name, it's open until midnight (check the webpage or call first) and it's convenient as hell. What I didn't really expect was how good it really is. The interior is open and really welcoming. It's not short staffed, plenty of folks working. Smart, happy, helpful people. And I hope that embarrasses them. I got chicken Marsala. Comes with two sides, I got redskin mashed and a salad w/the BEST balsamic I have ever had in memory, recent and long-term. I never mention a salad. It's green and full of veg. Yeah, but this was great. The chicken Marsala was a sizable portion, breast in tenderloins lightly seasoned floured and served in a rich dark perfectly seasoned Marsala wine sauce. Just the right amount of sweet. The redskins were served hot, in their own crock, and no butter or gravy with it. That wine sauce paired with the potato amazingly well. I usually flood mashed with butter and gravy. THESE mashed were great tasting, but not full of butter like some places use to enhance flavor. These did not need the butter assist. Just. Great. And Linda had onion rings (crisp tempura crust and real onion rings and HOT) with the fried haddock, which I had a bite or two there, and will finish what Linda brought home in maybe ten minutes. Again, hot and tasty. Perfectly cooked. Crispy breading on a thick large haddock filet. The breading sealed the fish, so hitting it with that fork released some steam. Oh, and a crock of Mac and cheese too. And again, great wait staff. I mean, every person there. And the other folks eating there too. I'd have zero issues bringing the kids or Nona and Dadoo here.

I grew up in New Castle, and my grandmother took me here on frequent occasions. Hill House Restaurant is straight up out of a fiction novel; It's family owned, the customers have gone there for years, and the food is wonderful! On there menus they claim "Absolutely no atmosphere." But that lack of atmosphere (no music, the dishes don't match, the booths and chairs are old, hardly any decorations, no television, etc.) is exactly why I love this place so much. read more

So that was nice. So why the low score? The food. I had biscuits and gravy, two eggs and hash browns. Not sure what was going on with the biscuits. I guarantee you that they are not homemade. They tasted more like bread. Nasty! Gravy was flavorless, with specks of sausage. Again, the gravy tasted like it was out of a can. Eggs (over easy) were cooked perfectly. Then there were the hash browns. They use the patties like you would get at a fast food restaurant. To make homemade biscuits and gravy is so simple and cheaper for the restaurant to make. The hash brown patties is basically saying, "I just don't care." Homemade hash browns are more impressive on a plate and again less expensive to make. It looks like they have no competition when it comes to breakfast. Instead of "calling it in" why not find your passion and cook food people would brag about!?!
