Our favorite grocery store in Vancouver because it reminds us of Trader Joe's and Newport Market in Bend, OR. I love Stong's flower arrangements that perfume the air as you enter the store. Plus their bouquets are the perfect gift (even/especially when buying for yourself). I also like how kombucha and mate is kept close to the checkout lines so I can stock up before my husband has finished emptying our cart. Even if it's not the closest grocery store to our home we enjoy making the trip for quality products. read more

Nice market with a selection of certain products that you can't find at other places. I feel like it's kind of similar to Fresh Street Market but Fresh Street doesn't have a big vitamin and supplement section or a better way to describe this store is a cross between Fresh Street Market and Whole Foods. It has a little cafe and seating outside. I visited the other day as I wanted to use my gift card but man is this place expensive. Even the products on sale were still expensive. I was only able to get two items with my $20 gift card then had to pay the difference still. I guess it's fine if you live close or want something in particular like dips for chips. I saw different types of hummus and dips I never see at other stores as well as they have their own signature juices too so if you're in town and want to splurge a little on groceries this place is an option. If you shop here regularly it might hurt your wallet a bit though. read more

I decided to stop here to grab something to eat quick before going to a show nearby. I pretty much made a beeline for the deli and didn't get a great look at most of the store, but I was pretty impressed with the deli offerings. The one complaint was that they were no longer cooking whole pizzas at 6 pm, which seems like prime time to order a pizza, but they did still have some hot slices which honestly looked pretty good. I ended up getting some deli sides (Moroccan chickpea salad and pasta salad) and a dessert (cherry trifle). I was happy with all of the food. Sometimes store-bought pasta salads are too mayo-heavy and oily, but these were not. The cherry trifle was also pretty good and not overly sweet. My favourite thing about the store was the service. Everyone, from the deli and bakery staff to the cashier, was genuinely friendly. read more

I love the Stong's floral department, Stems! This past week I ordered a floral arrangement for a grand opening, and Michelle helped me put together a stunning arrangement at a very reasonable price! I appreciated her going out of her way to make sure that the floral arrangement matched the colour scheme of the receiv organization. Cute locally owned grocery store on Dunbar. They're open early and they don't close till 10:30, even on Sundays. I love how their website features online shopping, so you can search for specific items that you might be looking for. They carry a great variety of natural and cruelty free products, which aren't normally found in typical grocery and drug stores. I really appreciate this! Wow. I was SO impressed with this grocery store! Where to start? This was to be our family's first Passover here in our new home city of Vancouver and I had no idea where to get a good brisket. A long-standing Vancouverite friend of mine suggested Stong's, so three weeks earlier, I emailed the store, asking how to go about pre-ordering a brisket, noting the size I needed and when I wished to pick it up. The next day, I received an email response from Chris D. in the meat department, and we made all the arrangements. Fast forward to this week: I came to this store to get my long-awaited brisket! I was first impressed with the free underground parking (accessible via the rear alleyway). I love free parking in this city as it is such a rarity! The store itself is beautiful. Nice deli area. I liked the "pizza buffet" where one came make one's own pizza. Lovely produce area. Decent canned and dry food aisles. They seem to have more "gourmet" (foodie) brands than other stores (these items are, of course, way higher priced). They have most of the regular fare as well, and the prices of these are competitive with all other grocery stores. The store truly stands out in two areas: 1. the meat and fish area. All I can say is, wow. I am really impressed. (BTW, Chris brought out my brisket and it was incredible). 2. the staff. Not only was Chris super but the other employees here who helped us were all great. I asked a gal at the customer service desk where something was located, and she insisted on walking me there. The check-out girl was also nice (and quick and efficient, too). Everyone we encountered was genuinely nice and helpful I noticed there was a mezzanine level of sorts that had a cafe/coffee shop here! It looked fantastic! Stong's is very much a community market. When I was fund-raising for charity 18 months ago, Stong's came through with letting us raffle off a grocery gift certificate from the store. The manager on duty also helped us set up, checked in with us throughout the day, and just all-around wanted to help. I've purchased the odd load of groceries here as well (it's a little far to be my normal spot) and find the produce and baked goods in particular to be excellent. And while you'd expect their prices to be the boutique version of Safeway, here's a comparison: Safeway coffee is $2.86/100g. Saltspring, organic coffee just $2.50/100g. Oh, and it also offers valet parking for customers! Now that's service. read more

My impressions about Stong's Market My first visit last year in October was great at Stong's cafe. Friendly service and good coffee, cookies, cupcakes etc. The friendly coffee team brought me later to the market. An average market, with no big highlights. I am not so happy bout these things: 3 of 12 shoppings were billed incorrectly and always to high. ;-( The cashiers have probably "no information" or "did not" pay attention to the price offers of the week, so that constantly wrong prices are calculated. No matter what it may be, bad training or whatever, you will legally be "cheated". That is unacceptable and intolerable. To enter a wrong price can happen, but the frequency is simply a fraud. The fluctuation of cashiers, that is, new faces is not a good sign of permanence. At IGA, Safeway, for example, I see a core workforce for years and relatively few new faces. The meat corner or fish stinks, I've never seen something like this at IGA or Safeway, etc. The packaged meat and fish packaging does not look nice either. The roast sellers could also be friendlier. The bakery does not testify to large "gustus" compared to Safeway or IGA and is also much more expensive and not the same quality. I grew up in this area and I know a lot, but I have never experienced something like this. Usually it is poor cleanliness, when smells penetrate the air. Stong's is by far the best grocery store you could go to in the Lower Mainland. They are everything to everyone. Whether you're the health conscious, eco-aware, or even both, they are that type of store to you. That super hero Stong's bear in the parking lot isn't just a cute show piece, it is representative of their service and dedication to grocery goods. This hyper-local grocery store not only offers top notch products, earth friendly bags, healthy alternatives, fresh produce and meats they do it all in that true blue understated way. They're not like the big guys who do it for show and flash up the giant "Organic" or "Biodegradable" hoopla all over the store. These guys live it and walk the walk instead of just being full of talk. Although you might not live in this neighborhood their delivery service is amazing in the fact that it isn't just restricted to just the surrounding area. They'll deliver as far off as Bowen Island! That's right these guys will take the friggen ferry over and deliver your food! I'm not sure if there's a different delivery charge, it doesn't appear to be but that's pretty darned amazing! Granted I'm too far to reach this place regularly, given the fact that I still come here when I can and that I'm not alone in doing so says a lot about this place. read more

Don't know why I still enjoy coming here, despite no fresh bakery to buy lemon meringue pies or croissants. Just something I like to throw in when buying groceries. It's a bit small, and a bit nostalgic, guess it's the Dunbar air ;) Prices aren't cheap but produce is fresh, and also an organic section. Especially that 4 litre organic milk for $9.99! ouch... A few years ago, I attended a national conference for grocery store owners in Toronto (don't ask; it's a long story). In any case, I when that year's winner for best store in Canada was announced, I was tickled pink to discover that, not only did the winner hail from my hometown, but it also happened to be the only grocery store located in the neighbourhood where I grew up. That store is Stong's. If you've ever lived or spent any significant amount of time in the Dunbar area, you know about Stong's Market. Sure, it seems to be a bit pricier than other Vancouver grocery staples, but what it does, it does well. And it doesn't really need an award to prove that. Taking extra time and care to ensure quality products are kept stocked in every department. Stong's believes it offers the best quality and choice available when it comes to meat, deli, and produce. And, having sampled their fresh-baked cinnamon buns more often than I care to count, this is a claim I can most certainly vouch for. read more

Stong's is an institution, and has been here since the 1930s. Parking is pretty decent thanks to the medium-sized lot. However, it does fill up pretty often on the weekends. Their produce has a great selection, and their items are fresh. Many of their items are also organic. However, this also means you're paying a premium. Something I'm not always willing to pay, especially for simple items like lemons. It does have a small town feel though. Something very rare in this city. They also have a delivery service, though I don't know how much it costs. read more

As a child I used to loathe coming here with my mother as she'd invariably run into 14 people she knew and have the dreaded "stop and chat". Now as a semi adult, I cherish this. Stongs is an independently owned and run grocer, a huge contributor to the community and a fairly well kept secret as far as premiere grocers go. It carries many of the same brands and treats as Meinhardt and Capers but is less expensive (generally) and friendlier. Oh and puts effort into supplying local products whenever possible. The deli alone is a reason to shop there. As a (somewhat closeted) non cook, I've faked my way through countless dinner parties thanks to this deli. They have unique and delicious salads, pastas and a huge variety of meats and cheeses. Even though I live in Kits, when I confront my empty condiment jar filled fridge, Stong's is my go to. Plus: they have the most amazing plant sales every year with healthy, inexpensive plants, flowers and herbs etc that only the blackest (mine) thumb can kill. read more

I hate grocery shopping..I love cooking..I just hate the entire process of getting the food into my kitchen..so I was super happy to discover a local grocery store that does on-line orders AND delivers it right to your door for an only $10 delivery fee...and when you become a regular it drops down to $5... Stong's has a great selection of local foods..good produce and fresh meats from the butcher.... Greta selection for all sorts of food related products. I popped in Wednesday, May 24th around 11:30 am. The deli is very well stocked and this one staff member (sorry, can't recall you name ) was wonderful and uber helpful. I got s few goodies including British crips - yah! Everyone is so nice/friendly, the atmosphere is really cozy and a fun place for Sunday groceries. They are small so there isn't the wide array of products compared to bigger places such as Whole Foods, IGA, etc. Prices are a bit steep, although a lot of foods are organic and they get the good stuff! Don't come here if you're loading up on groceries, it could cost you a lot (even Safeway in this case would be cheaper)! read more

An update to my earlier review: I often use Stong's grocery delivery service--their online site is easy to use and the time saved in running around can be a godsend--but they truly went above and beyond in helping me out and getting a delivery to me today. I have been stuck at home sick for 3+ days, and even though they technically only do next day delivery and most of their drivers were gone for the day, they actually shopped and delivered an order to me in under an hour. It was awesome--the ginger, juice and Emergen-C they brought over was sorely needed. I love Stong's--their prices are great and they are the very definition of great, small town-style customer service. Even though you're ordering online, you get better service than you would shopping in-person at most stores. And hey, another benefit of online grocery shopping? You tend to eat healthier. There is far less opportunity to snag those bad for you impulse items when you're not cruising around with your cart--and having fresh food on hand prevents you from turning to take out. Shall I compare thee to a Save-on or a Safe-off? No, I shall not. Stongs is our favorite supermarket. First, it is independent, locally owned. Second, they have the best staff, and they actually care. But mainly, they have a great variety of... well, everything. I love shopping here ! The grandkids enjoy looking for the items on my grocery list. We start the shop off playing where is the plastic bag and what is the price of this item. Then we get to play where did the item move this week as the groceries seem to move around a lot or they have some really odd places to be found. But this is why the children love coming shopping here with me. A unique experience and guess it works like who would have thought the fresh smell of popcorn popping with the mixing aroma of coffee combination would blend so well together. read more

I don't get why people love Stongs. I went to school down the road so occasionally would pop in with my mother for groceries -- I recall it being a bit grungy even then. Fast forward 12 years and my parents have moved closeby to Southlands -- it's either IGA on 41st or Stongs. Stongs is still as grimy as ever, has narrow aisles, a seemingly understocked and poorly organized meat department (though as I found out you can ask for anything and ye shall receive, though it still irks me that each type of meat is spread over the whole fridge), and to reiterate, not enough space to actually enjoy a shop. The selection is good, as are the prices, but there is no joy to be found in any of the narrow aisles. I love supermarkets and often show up at the supermarket without a list and just buy whatever looks good. Well, such a feat is practically impossible at Stongs because there are too many people for the allotted space, and too much product on the shelves to actually see anything. As for the service -- don't give a shit really, its a supermarket not a whorehouse. read more

I won't waste time here singing the praises of Stong's. But you need to know that they carry a full range of harder-to-find sodas sold by the SINGLE. Vanilla coke, cherry pepsi, bottles of craft sodas. Also they do BBQs by donation on almost every major holiday. They are top notch! read more

This is an awesome independent grocer. They have been my "go to place" for many years now. I love that it doesn't feel like a chain grocer. their deli has the best rare roast beef. They will even help you carry your groceries to your car. The Delivery option is awesome and really doesn't cost that much more. I ended up shopping at Stong's in a roundabout way. I was working in Nelson last winter and became enamoured with Oso Negro Coffee. This is the primary roaster in the Kootenays, and while I found Oso's penchant for low acidity dark roasts a bit intense at first, I became an Oso addict...like everyone else in Nelson. Not only is their roastery in Nelson, but they also have a cozy coffeeshop in town that is truly a haven once the pow starts falling. After I moved back to VanCity in the spring I began to get a hankering for some Oso Negro 'Prince of Darkness' coffee. I was in the process of emailing a friend from Nelson to request a mail-out when I impulsively checked out Oso's website and was astonished to discover that Stong's - just up the road from me - was the primary retailer of Oso Negro beans in Vancouver. When I was searching the supermarket for my precious beans I realised how much better it is than Safeway or No Frills, which are usually my go-to grocery stores. You can tell that the manager tries really hard to source local products, and this one visit made me a convert. Besides Oso coffee, I also noticed that the store stocks fresh duck! Most duck can only be found frozen, if supermarkets even carry it in the first place. Ooooooo, this Yelp entry has inspired me to go make a nice hot cup of Duck Fart! Nothing like a steaming mouthful of hot Duck Fart on a crisp autumn evening. read more

My local market for the past seven years... Slightly more expensive than other places but definitely worth it. Almost Trader Joe'ish- w/o the store brands- in that the place has quite a diverse and eclectic selection of goods. The deli is pretty decent and the store does sell Savary Island pies !!! (yay !) The meat selection and pretty good as well. The cashiers have been there for years and one usually don't see the revolving door thing with other places. It's nice to see familiar and friendly faces in dreary sunday mornings when one has to go grocery shopping.... The parking lot is fairly spacious and one is usually able to find a space quickly. However, beware of people turning left into the lot which can totally slow down South- going traffic on Dunbar. It's nice to have a locally- owned grocery store (there used to be a Stongo in WV as well- on Dundarave) instead of patronizing big national chains that sell crap. I really hate when grocery stores have the price of another product (usually cheaper) in front of the product I want to buy and head to the checkout stand and find out it's more expensive. That's what happened to me today when I went to buy a 4 pack of Butter's homemade oreo's here and the sign said $8.40 but they rang up as $11.99. But when I went back to check, $8.40 was the lemon loaf. Anyway, that's my only gripe. It deserves 4 stars though because 1) they carry Butter baked goods!! And 2) they carry 2 Canadian sources of Buffalo mozzarella!! And I'm sure more of other good stuff. That's just what I noticed today. I will come back for that Mozzarella di buffala. read more

This company does not appreciate the business we have given them to the extent of thousand dollars a month over the years. The problems with the order are ongoing and manyfold. The online order arrives in atrocious condition. The fact that raw meat products are not to be thrown in with the lettice without bags eclipses them each month. A dirty and heavy celery root should not be rolling over the delicate cilantro, both without a bag, is a lesson they cannot learn. The current manager, Dean, unlike Mr. Lim in the past, is unfortunately too busy, thus is unable and unwilling to rectify a complaint constructively, while he agrees that the online order preparation is indeed very awful, giving the explanation that it is borderline retarded people who work there. Leaving an item note is almost useless, as the opposite of the request happens. Dean's explanation makes this no surprise, as the people probably cannot read there. My complaint was not even marginally handled. It would be best to close this business. STAY AWAY from this so-called 'high end' food sore, any food store is better. read more

I've been shopping here since I moved into the neighbourhood in 2003. This is consistently a top-notch business - great selection of foods, including some unique and locally sourced products. They also have a nice selection in their deli and bakery. The customer service is absolutely superb. The cashiers are friendly and professional (can't emphasize this enough), and the folks stocking the shelves or serving you across the deli counter are always welcoming and helpful. We love Stong's Caribbean chicken kabobs, and have been buying them every week for several years. They make a perfect meal infallibly. Imagine our sadness when we learned that they are no longer available at Stong's on Dunbar although other variations which we like less, still are. They were so delicious. We stop in at Stong's on our way home after our Sunday walk, as we now live a long way away. We like to support a local company that does a great job in providing excellent food and service to it's customers. Stongs is fabulous - we shop there at least twice a week. First - the hours of operation are convenient - they are open late during the week and parking is never a problem. Second - they have unique items that you will not find at Safeway or Save-On. If you find it at Choices - expect to pay a lot more. Stongs is up to date on their price competition and I never feel like I am overpaying for items. Third - the deli section is fantastic for 'no-cooking' nights. The green-beans amandine is the same dish my grandmother made - it is a treat to serve this on a quick dinner night. Also - the root vegetables are amazing! Hot or cold - this dish is both healthy and satisfying. My only complaint is that some of the staff at the checkouts don't seem too happy and are not very interactive. But , that only relates to one or two employees, the rest of the staff is fantastic. read more

Stong's is about service, good quality, and neighbourliness. It is rare that you need to wait long in line as they try to have enough people working to take care of the rush periods. As long as you shop the sales prices are good. Try their specialty Turkey sausages. read more

Where else can you get mulled wine sachets at Xmas (tried a lot of other places - most had never heard of this)? And they deliver exactly to the minute you've arranged. Placed an online order on Monday morning with a promised delivery on Wednesday, store cancelled the order on Tuesday saying some items not available. They did not say which items were not available. They could have delayed the order until missing items are available. Not very good service. I went to IGA on West Broadway and found all the items that were ordered from Stong's and cheaper. Stong's has Dunbar pricing. IGA is owned by London Drugs, so a bigger company. The suppliers must be the same for both IGA and Stong's. Stong's could have delayed shipping until everything is in stock instead of cancelling orders leaving a bad impression on customers. They force you to create accounts to buy something instead of allowing guest checkouts with no accounts. My family have been a long time customer of Stong's former location in West Vancouver that is now an IGA. I have shopped at this Dunbar store a few times at both original and new location. There is a decent selection of products at slightly higher prices. The cashiers and online service not the most friendly. read more

We do the internet shop & delivery - the service is amazing! We get good prices, easy delivery options, and they always do it properly. Today, they came back after the delivery with fresh bread...because they could not deliver it earlier as it was too warm to bake. So not only is bread super fresh and high quality, the service is impeccable. i can recommend the seafood, the deli and healthy products - the quality and freshness rival or surpass local farmers markets. read more
