On July 5 about 5, 6pm, I went this location 65 Newport Ave, Quincy, Stop and Shop for groceries, I bought one pound Finlandia Cheese (handed cut at the spot) in Deli Department. I went home found the cheese was already spoiled, bad smell, some dirt on it. I went back store, and got refund. I had Bad experience in that Deli Department. read more

I have to give this store credit for what it's due. Agreed this store is so crowded almost all the time - even on weekdays during afternoons sometimes. But the staff here is extremely efficient. I do come here once in a while for the following reasons and from my great experience with the same. - They are open 24 hours except Sat and Sunday nights when they close at 12 am and open at 7am. I work crazy hours once in a while so have stopped here late in the night on the way back home from work. One place in Quincy or on the way home to south shore everyone should be aware of that is 24 hours - They have great deals on Subs and Sandwiches in the deli section which I have seen are really good if I ever stop during my lunch break to pick up some groceries. They always have a special deal for a different kind of a sandwich / sub almost every week and more often than not, they are good. I would never mention a grocery store made sub unless it's good. - Also, they are the only Grocery store in the area that has beer and wine. And here are a few specific things I like about their beer and wine section that I really appreciate and have been frequenting the store despite a bunch of good liquor store options here in Quincy. * Craft beer selection: They actually have a great selection of craft and micro brews. And there is a section of the Aisle (cold one thank god!) where you can mix and match 6 bottles of Cold micro brew / craft beer bottles and take them in a carry off 6 pack cardboard container (like a coffee shop!) for just $10.99. I think that's a great idea and very intelligent! Special brownie points for that. * Again, some of the deals that I get for craft and micro brews here (on 6 and 12 packs), I haven't seen them in some of my regular liquor stores * Same goes with Wine section as well. They have a huge Aisle with so many cold wines ready to be whisked off to a party where you know you would need a crisp cold white ready to be served with apps. It's a shame most liquor stores don't think about keeping readily available cold whites a lot. That's where this store really comes handy. Again, very impressed with the selection of wines too. I found some really great Argentine and Australian wines here that were a rare find. Again, I don't expect any store around in South shore to carry Château Simone Palette Rouge or Rene Rostaing "Côte Blonde" - for that you visit your fav online wine resource and have them shipped to your home. * Finally they lock up the wine and beer section after 10am every night. For the last minute alcohol shoppers in Mass., we will continue to abide by the puritan rules for a few more decades here. Hopefully a couple of generations after us will be better off if they are not as better planners like some of our generation's folks. That should be all about this Stop & Shop. A few really helpful points. First of all, by nature of a supermarket, I think it's harder for people to give five stars. By definition, you know that you're not getting anything fancy or unusual with a Stop and Shop... and I think people are being a bit harsh considering what is a reasonable expectation of it. Second, it is often crowded as mentioned in other reviews, but I would maintain that it's because it's one of the best food shopping options in the area. And there are a lot of off times, late at night Monday through Thursday in particular. Or lunch time on those days. Sunday is busy not just because it's a family-friendly shopping day... but because of the popularity of big Sunday dinners, the prevalence of Sunday holidays, the freshness of produce on Sundays (tends to be decent), and the schedule of sales just to name a few. So don't complain about weekends for being weekends, and expect a lot of other people to have the same idea to go shopping and make dinner. Now, onto the review. There are a few supermarkets in Quincy. Mainly this Stop and Shop, the one by Southern Artery, the Star Market (Shaws) alongside Burgin Parkway, Roche Bros. and Hannaford. I would argue that the goodness of this North Quincy Stop and Shop is in large part by process of elimination of the others. There is no local Whole Foods (Hingham and Dedham have them) or Trader Joe's. The Milton Fruit Center is a nice artisinal market but expect a steep price tag. In Quincy, I would venture to say that Roche Bros. is the "nicest" supermarket in terms of cleanliness, displays, roominess and customer service. However, it is overpriced. This is a simple fact, as many of their retail prices are above Stop and Shop or Star. Hannaford has a few drawbacks, despite being a good supermarket. First, it received years of bad press and picketing for being non-union. Second, it's off the road and so people probably drive by without realizing it's an option. Third, it's right off Hancock Street which is the main drag in Quincy... and Hancock is almost always horrifically congested. Aside from that, it's pretty good, but the variety of items is near average and the prices are decent, but not super competitive. Stop and Shop off Southern Artery and Star both suffer from limited product and a somewhat grimy overall condition. Star Market was always a limited product supermarket chain, but locations expanded selections when taken over by Shaw's. But when Albertson's took over Shaw's a few years back the prices jumped and many items are overpriced even today. Their self-scan system is also a disaster. So the Stop and Shop on Newport stands as a better than average supermarket in terms of general cleanliness and organization. It's got a good product selection and tends to launch new items more than the other markets (except sometimes the S&S off Southern Artery). The prices are competitive if you shop savvy. There are always good sales even on premium brands (high end pasta, brand name meats, organic foods and so on). The customer service isn't anything to write home about, but it's a supermarket not a concept restaurant. I keep my expectations tempered. They recently updated their fleet of shopping carts which is well-received. Their handheld self-scan devices are apparently irritating to some, but they save me valuable time as I seek to quickly exit and get home with perishable and frozen items. You just scan your items, scan the "complete purchase" barcode at checkout and then scan your S&S card on the register. Occasionally, they do audits but even then, it's shorter than traditional checkout. What's the problem? Naturally, there are the fluke situations where the device craps out... it's happened to me twice but I've been in there about once a week since we moved back to Quincy almost three years ago. So I'm still happy. They keep decent hours, have a good selection, competitive prices, and a handheld self-scan option (along with a lot of self-scan checkout stands). It's a supermarket... it has a ton of parking, new carriages and most of what I need... what else are we looking for here?! I recommend it. If you need great produce or specialty items, check out Milton Fruit Center or a Whole Foods. If you just want some orange juice, soup, lettuce, pasta or other normal stuff... stop in! And bonus, they sell beer and wine. It's not a phenomenal selection, but it's pretty substantial for a Massachusetts supermarket... read more

Newly renovated, I honestly see no difference. It's clean, the cashiers are friendly. But why the review you ask... because they're open 24 hours. YES! Hours: Mon:7:00 a.m.-Midnight Tue:Open 24 Hours Wed:Open 24 Hours Thu:Open 24 Hours Fri:Open 24 Hours Sat:Midnight-Midnight Sun:7:00 a.m.-Midnight and they sell beer and wine - but not after 10pm or 11pm (i can't remember). read more

So I love this Stop & Shop, not only because they sell alcohol. The produce I've gotten here has been good so far, with a wide selection, there's a huge parking lot, and they have those little things where you can scan as you go with quick check out (which I haven't tried yet, but it looks really cool). Back to the alcohol, they have a section where you can create your own sixer for $9.99. So that's cool if you've been wanting to try some seasonal beers but don't want to commit to a whole case yet. read more

I'm a regular at this supermarket every since I knew how to walk. Clean. Fresh. Friendly. My latest infatuation is the top right section of the market - precooked/prepped section. The salad bar is fab! Plenty of items to choose from. I also like the rotisserie chicken here. There's always something here for all levels of cooking (or not cooking). read more

Nice Supermarket, very clean, employees are helpful, and prices are good. My favorite part is the self checkout isles which are better than the ones you find in North Jersey. They also have a cool scanner that you can carry around, scan what you want to buy, and then items will be ready for you when get to the front. read more

My suggestion- if you're gonna be open at 11:30PM, act like you're open. I stopped in for an impulse buy-snax-3 items , 8 bux. Only 3 self-check lanes open. Why? Each line had 2-3 customers waiting. Only 2 regular lanes open. One had a customer with a ton of food, and another waiting. The other had stopped the lane in the middle of check-out so the customer could get another item. That took 2-3 minutes. Then a conference between the customer, the cashier , and her shopping partner when she returned. I don't NEED the snax. I can save money and useless calories. Apparently S&S feels no need to take my money, or be customer oriented. So. I left my items in the store, and walked. Thinner and richer for it! read more

How can the service be so lousy when the corporate offices are less than a mile away? Apparently the big wigs at S&S aren't swinging by for milk and bread.. The lines are insane, no matter how nicely you may ask that they not hurl your produce down the belt, you will suffer some bruised fruit and you will not make it home without a cracked egg. Stop and Shop tends to be pricier than most supermarkets but I like venturing to this location because it has more options than other stop and shops that I have been inside. They have a sushi section as well as an olive bar that is still there amidst the removal of the salad bar. The people here are friendly as can be even at night since I hate shopping in crowds so I tend to shop later in the night. It is really convenient that they open to midnight, or maybe 24 hours, correct me if I am wrong. In general, you can find a lot of things at this place theyre always bringing in new products and expand many of the selections. read more

I like coming to the Stop & Shop because it's close to Dorchester where I live. I don't have to pay for bags. Sometimes surprises are not accurately marked. I use self checkout because it's faster then standing in long lines with my two rambunctious Sons. The only problem is 90% of the time it asks a cashier to swipe a card. For no reason at all. I've recently moved about 2 streets away from this Stop and Shop and this is my go-to for nearly everything. I come by every week and have only had 1 negative experience where I was denied alcohol because I was using an out-of-state ID. I was walking by the meat section and stopped because an elderly woman was stopped in front of me. One of the associates who worked there bumped into me, spilling his coffee on me. This store has good selection but awful customer service. I used to have some good shopping experience but lately it's been unpleasant. Last night I went to buy a few items and chose self check-out. To begin with, they didn't stock the bags. That wasn't a big deal; just grabbed one from the next check-out counter. The "needed assistance" light was on and I waited. No one came to help even though there were staff members near me. Had to "abandon" the transaction and go to the register. I was not the only one; the guy next to me had similar problem and went to one of the register too. I was also disappointed by the cashier. She did not tell me my total so I had to ask her. Informing customer of the total is a cashier's job but she failed to do so. I used my card and while we were waiting for the machine to process, she took out her cellphone and started texting. What kind of cashier would play with their phone in the middle of a transaction??!! Girl, I know you want to hang out with friends on a Sunday night but you needed to at least pretend you care about your job when you were on duty. read more

Awesome hours (open late or 24hrs), convenient location, no problems with customer service when it comes to returns. I bought expired almond milk, not like a week expired, I'm talking 5 months..but I just went back and told them and they let me exchange for a more expensive brand of almond milk. The flower dept is also great. I got a beautiful arrangement of flowers that exceeded my expectations :) I'd give this stop and shop 5 stars if they were more on top of keeping expired items off the shelf! read more

It's okay. Their prices are higher for some of the same products that I can get .5 miles away at Hannaford. I only stop here when I need something I can't find at Hannaford, like organic apples. The parking lot is CRAZY during the day, so I only visit during late evening hours. (Avoid at all costs on a weekend). They re-modeled the "natural foods" section, so that part of the store is nice, but the rest is just average. They do have an in-store Dunkin' Donut's, if that's important to you. They have much more flexibility with their hours, so that's one other redeeming quality I'll add. read more

Oh Stop & Shop, I've had this love/hate relationship with you for years. Love: You're the closest to my house. I don't have to fight insane traffic to to get to you. I could walk to you if I had to. I've never had any issues finding what I want. Then again, I've got your entire layout mentally mapped out. I've never had any issues with your overall selections in grocery, meat, bakery, and deli. The cashiers have really stepped up their customer service skills. I appreciate the fact that I don't need a loyalty card to get a discount on particular items. Hate: Produce is hit-or-miss. Over the years I've brought home, unbeknownst to me at the time I picked it out, product that is either on the verge of going bad or parts already going bad (hello, bagged salad greens, carrots, tomatoes, and berries, in particular). Prices. Yes, you're less expensive than Shaw's, but Hannaford still beats you in all categories, even in your house brand. Customer Service. Really, when a customer gets suddenly, violently sick all over the floor in front of the registers, it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to call for clean-up, especially when there are other customers trying to get into line while wheeling their carriages through it. One shouldn't have to wait for ages for an employee to clear out the bottle return machines. One shouldn't have to wait until one's hair grows white to be served at the deli. Perhaps some training akin to the cashiers' would be in order. Overall, you're not my first choice, but you will do in a pinch. read more

RACISM. Most of the time I visit this Stop and Shop its late at night because it's 24 hrs. I Came in one night around 12:30a about 2 months ago, for a few things, & at some point I realized that this Stop and Shop sold alcohol, so I grabbed a bottle of wine and headed to check out. The cashier a older white woman started to ring me up, no greeting, didn't ask if I had a Stop and Shop Card or see if I needed a complimentary Stop and Shop swipe nothing. At the end of the ring up she picks up the bottle of wine roughly, looks at it, and slam-places it on the closed register belt behind her and turns back to me with a blank irritated stare. Im looking like ok??? & I say whats wrong? She goes very sharply "IT'S AFTER 12 AM YOUR NOT ALLOWED TO PURCHASE ALCOHOL AFTER 11PM!! & Im like damn ok?? Thats all you had to say, but there is a right & a WRONG way to say things!!! Paid the total and got no good night, thank you or anything. I went on silently about it. Tonight My Boyfriend & his friend went to Stop and Shop to pick up disposable pans for the upcoming holiday, they get to the register to pay and the Cashier a woman (who happened to be very excited & eager to hold conversation with the white person ahead of him), keeps giving My boyfriend the worst glare! So much so that his friend even asked him "Hey do you notice how hard she's looking at you?? I will never attempt to purchase alcohol from this store again, and probably will not do my grocery shopping here, either. I went in with two friends, all of us being WELL over 21 but because one friend lived out of state and had a NH license, the extremely rude cashier wouldn't even look at his ID and rudely turned us all away. We tried to dispute this but she was demeaning and wouldn't even look at us. It was embarrassing! I have never felt so ashamed, as if I were doing wrong and was trying to pull one over on them. This supermarket is the closest to my house. Even though I much prefer Hannaford's, i tend to come here more often because distance-wise, it's a little more convenient- I could walk here, if I wasn't going to buy anything heavy to carry home. Pros: -Right near the T, so for those without cars, that's a total plus. -Pretty decent beer and wine selection. You can even mix and match your own 6 pack, which is pretty cool. -Decent produce section -Things are almost never out of stock Cons -ALWAYS crowded. Peak times you walk around wondering if there's a hurricane or blizzard coming, that's how many people are in there. -Deli service is SO SLOW. It's deceiving, because there are tons of people behind the counter- but the majority of those people are slicing pre-orders. My advice: put your order in before you shop, go around and get what you need, and then by the time you're done your cold cuts will be ready. It's not worth waiting as they slice it. -Self-service scanners are a pain in the ass. read more

What is up with the new self-checkout set up? AWFUL. Crowded, space too small to put groceries down, you cannot remove bagged items or the checkout halts. In a word, ugly, in every sense. It is difficult to imagine the thought processes that went into designing this absurd, pen-like area. It is bad enough when I go through a regular check out and have to bag my own items because there is not enough staff, but this arrangement is really terrible. Going to head to Roche Bros for now - not as convenient, but not such poor management as Stop and Shop. read more

I hate this place! Only reason I go is because it is close by, and on my way home from work. Cons: ALWAYS crowded. My friends make fun of me because I get up early on Sundays to get there at open to beat the crowds. I have also tried to go late night on Saturday nights, but that must be family night, and can be even more frustrating. I left my cart and walked out before due to frustration of rude people cutting you off and blocking aisles. They are always stocking shelves during peek times, they could be blocking an item that you want, but they completely ignore you no matter how obvious you make it. I am pretty sure the dunks doesn't do sandwiches. Pros: Pretty clean. I love and always use the self check out There is an older Irish woman there who patrols the self check out line, she has always been awesome. She is a hustler. The chinese guy with the funny hat who gets the carts is probably the nicest man alive and is always good for a few laughs. Though it is nice that they serve beer and wine, it is overpriced and if not for the liquer store bu the La Paloma closing down, I would never buy my beer there, Overall, I love the Hannafords on Hancock much better, but since I avoid Hancock street like the plague, I will probably continue with the S & S....during off hours. read more

This Stop and Shop is located in a strip mall on busy Newport Avenue in North Quincy. Not convenient to the North Quincy T station if you are walking. A large market, they have pretty much whatever you are looking for in a supermarket. The produce and meat and canned goods have a wide selection but not a Whole Foods type store by any stretch of the imagination. Of course the prices are much cheaper than Whole Wallet. Staff here are friendly and helpful. There are cashiers with baggers and also self checkout. They have high tech scanners so you can zap your own items but these were not working the last three times I was here. A Citizens Bank is conveniently located inside and open 7 days a week which is super handy. read more

We refer to this Stop & Shop as "The Good Stop & Shop". The other S&S being the one in South Bay that makes my blood boil by the time I get to the check-out. This S&S is clean, very well stocked, friendly, and yay - there's booze! Whenever there's extra grocery shopping time, we gladly take the trip out of the city to shop at this store. read more
