My storage unit was broken into and most of my belongings were stolen. This company did literally nothing about it.
    Megan P.

I secured a storage unit at this location in June 2019. Sometime between then and December 2019, my storage unit was broken into and most of my belongings were stolen. Since I had purchased the coverage that was sold to me as insurance for my belongings, I figured I'd have some protection in the matter. I was wrong. When I filed my claim, it was promptly denied by a single person who works part-time for the company, who said they were the final say on all claims. This person said that my loss was due to "mysterious circumstances" and used that as her justification for denying my claim. When I asked how I could appeal this decision, I was told I couldn't. When I asked what insurer the insurance was through, I was told that it wasn't actually insurance--it was "coverage." To even call it "coverage" is stretching the truth, as nothing was actually covered from my break-in. They insert language into their "coverage" contract that makes it very, very easy for them to deny legitimate claims for virtually any reason. By the way, literally no one at this company ever even attempted to pull security footage regarding my claim. Those security cameras are there to sell you on their storage units--nothing else. What's more, this location started renovating the units to be "more secure" immediately after I reported my claim. Undoubtedly, they were making these units more secure against human break-ins. It's almost like my loss didn't happen under "mysterious circumstances" at all...It's almost like they knew my claim was completely legitimate and wanted to protect themselves against further claims and possibly even legal action...hmm, strange, indeed. Trying to communicate with this company during this whole ordeal was a nightmare. When I asked for a copy of my contract so that I could make a claim through a legitimate insurance company for my loss, I was given the run-around. I never actually received a copy of my contract from this company; I'm lucky I found the original photocopy I received when I signed up for my unit. The front-desk person at this location literally told me she was doing me a favor by searching for my contract (and told me so very rudely), as if my asking for a copy of my contract was completely unreasonable and out of the norm. This company is here to take your money and deny any kind of responsibility when it comes to their customers' completely legitimate theft claims (and probably other types of claims, too, to be honest). They treated me like I was the bad guy when I just wanted to recuperate some of the loss I had incurred as a result of the break-in--items I had inherited from my dead father that I'll never get back. For a big company like this, it would have been so easy to pay me out with the coverage I had paid for to protect my belongings. A few thousand bucks would have been absolutely no skin off this company's back. These people are scum and I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere. Public Storage seems to be a much more secure, affordable, and customer-oriented business, for what it's worth.

I have rented a unit on the send floor here for a year and have had a great experience with the various people I've worked with. Always helpful. They also have lots of carts and sell everything you need for moving. The unit I rented was big and much better price than others in the area, and while it's not a fancy place, it's storage. Served me fine. There seem to be plenty of cameras and secure access. I see posts complaining about security but the woman was clear that if I'd gone in and tried to drill my lock off myself, I would have gotten in a lot of trouble. (See below as to why I had my drill with me). And today I am prompted to write this review because i am moving out this weekend and had lost my key to my lock. I fully expected a big hassle and cost, but after presenting my ID, they removed my lock for me quickly and for free. And they had me file my termination paperwork upon renting so, because if this process apparently, are not charging me an extra month after tomorrow even though I completely failed to give them any prior notice. I didn't even ask for mercy- they offered and I accepted that! This indicates to me that they care about the quality if their customer service and want repeat business. I will use them elsewhere and hope for a consistently positive experience.

Revision of review on 7/13/17: I am now most definitely taking my belongings elsewhere. I went to my storage today and found that since my posting on 7/8/17, someone broke off my heavy duty lock with bolt cutters, rummaged through my unit, and stole some of my belongings. The odd thing is that the person who did this left an unlocked lock on my unit (I'm guessing as a replacement?) and it's one of the locks they sell inside the office... This place is terrible. DO NOT STORE YOUR THINGS HERE.

If you're like some people in SF, you've had this happen to you: "WTF? My couch is 1/2 an inch too wide to fit in my new apartment?!" I love my couch. It was pretty, comfy, and cost me a pretty penny. I wasn't ready to hock it off on Craigslist for next to nothing. I needed storage FAST. I open the Yellow Pages sitting in my now-empty Oakland apt and look for the biggest ad in the book: No frills, cheap storage--better prices than you'll find in SF. Called them and got a quote of $65/month to store my massive couch and lots of boxes. They're right off of the West Grand Ave exit in West Oakland, near the Bay Bridge/Macarthur Maze. Awesome. Couch disaster narrowly averted. This used to be Economy Self Storage, but it got bought out in 2006 by Storage Mart, a national chain. The new management is upgrading the facilities: they've already improved the lighting and added a keypad entry system. The new staff has been consistently friendly and courteous. The facilities aren't as tidy as Public Storage, but I'm getting the impression that's going to change with the new renovations.

Put all my things in in June... come back in October to grab some hiking boots out of unit and find the locks changed... ask manager why and she says" maybe they thought you hadn't paid on time". I inform her that I had been paying on time ... she takes me to my unit and noticed the new locks are red... lets me know that multiple units had been broken into back in August.... I ask her why no one had called me ... she says she thought they did(wtf). Lock had been cut... unit was a mess with boxes open and things thrown everywhere....they stole a 2000 dollar carbon road bike, an acoustic electric bass guitar, power drill, and my bong (whyyyyy?). I fill out claim and complete police report same day and they tell me should be 6 weeks before I can get my money(unit was insured for up to 3000). It is now Jan 11 and I haven't received a penny... have called multiple times since then to check on status and always get the run around ... half the time they make it sound like I don't even exist in their system... now I have to pursue some sort of legal action. Do yourself a favor and use Public Storage. Ps this building layout is like a spider web and moving things in and out is a pain in the ass

Not the best situation, but Up & Up Moving was phenomenal, from first contact to the delivery finale. Many thanks to Brandon, who got us scheduled, and whose professional, and calm manner was reassuring. The moving team earned rave reviews from everyone: great communication, punctuality, and helpfulness from start to finish. All in all, the move was efficient and damage-free. Coupled with the fact that they are local and Employee-Owned, and their pricing is transparent (no hidden fees or extra charges as we saw with other companies we considered), choosing Up & Up Moving was the best decision we made.

The movers are consistently punctual, hardworking, and strategic, not to mention they are experts at Tetris. Our most recent move got complicated fast, with multiple pickup locations, last-minute changes, custom logistics, and Brandon was extremely helpful. He met every curveball with a genuine can-do attitude. He was honest about what was and wasn't possible while still making a lot of good things happen, and worked with us to land a fair, affordable price. He made a stressful move feel totally manageable. Even though our most recent move took us out of the area, but we will recommend Up and Up at all our Bay Area friends!

When I cited the invoice's 7/1 due date, I was sent a new copy of the same invoice with an "issuance date" of 6/16, with charge added post-facto on 6/21. The act of editing an invoice *after* its issuance date to change the amount owed strongly suggested fraud, so I left a review stating as such. I was asked by the reply to email their help@, but I already did that yesterday before they even replied to this rating. They didn't even check their messages before telling me I should email them... I would love it if they checked their email and we could work this out!

Then upon trying to finish my reservation the $71 price became $74 then $71 then $81. Not sure how the system works but it felt the epitome of switch and bait tactics. Given that I am punctilious on these matters I was going to see if I could do a small claims action. I believe the fees to file would have been much more than the rent discrepancy but refundable if I won (assuming the judge wouldn't consider my action too punctilious for such a small difference in rent). Storage Mart seemed very eager to refund and deny service to close the matter ASAP rather than litigate. Storage Mart seemed very apologetic too for the fact that the unit size was nowhere close to the size seemingly advertised. Storage Mart said some 3rd parties quote their size wrong. Storage Mart also said they had previously tried to phone me to alert me of the size. Not too sure why or how they get tangled in false advertising and subsequent complaints. Not sure if it could be Storage Mart being very close to trying to use smoke and mirrors to try to attract new customers and face litigation or perhaps their or 3rd party involve very inept or sloppy advertising. Overall though very time wasteful Storage Mart was somewhat seemingly trying their best -- sort as if walking a tight rope between bait/switch, false ads, inept organization and hurried concerned customer service. I would enjoy using my legal background to see if I could do a small claims action but not sure how I can quantify damages in switch and bait tactics situations, or if I could be compensated much for losing many hours in a messy reservation?
