My interactions with StorageMart have been abysmal at best. The only shining example of a competant, understanding and decent employee is Yones, the assistant manager. This review is based on his performance alone. I went to pay my bill and check on my belongings. To my horror, my unit was infested with mice and my belongings were destroyed. Yones helped me receive a cleaner space, was supportive and incredibly empathetic. It is truly refreshing to find an assistant manager that cares about their customers, instead of profits. read more

I have had a storage unit here for many years. I have never had any problems. I just rented another one today. Natnael was the manager who helped me into my new unit. He fixed the problem I had with the website. I had two units rented to me instead of one. He credited my account and let me choose which one I wanted. He was very nice and helpful. Great customer service! Since the moment we arrived, Natnael was very kind and showed us different units so we could consider our options. The space was big enough to store all of our stuff (mattress, bedframes, closet drawer, lamps, microwave, TV...) and the first month was free. The only bad thing we experienced was in our moving out day, when the elevator got stuck. Fortunately we only had a couple of boxes left to take care of. So we just carried them through the stairs. I reserved a unit online, only to find out that the website errored on my selection and set me up with a smaller unit. Yonas still worked with me and set me up with a proper unit and kept the cost down. After all the processes were done, it was already closing time, however Yonas stayed at the facility until i finished unloading almost an hour and a half later. Storage Mart on San Pablo has made all my moves incredibly easy. I originally had one existing unit there but I was so happy with storAge Mart and their service I just got a second unit with them for my move that I just finished this week. Yonas has made my move easy and as stress free as possible. His customer service was impeccable. Yonas and John stayed late many times just to accommodate all the customers when I know they didn't have to. I was definitely guilty of that. Been with this Storage Mart for years and I've now come to the end of rope. *The place is always a mad house with not enough stairs for people w/ storage units that require them. So I always needed to make sure I was there first thing otherwise you're waiting for whatever random person who has to completely unpack they're unit over several hours before you get a chance. *Recently, on a Saturday (when they were supposed to be open from 9am - 5pm), rented a Uhaul van to start removing things from my unit as I no longer needed it since I just bought a house. Got there, right at 9am, AND THEY'RE CLOSED! I hung around for a good hour, calling the number to contact the manager and leaving messages. No response what-so-ever. Not that day, and not any day since has there been any explanation or customer service. Like how flipping hard of a job is it to sit at a desk all day and do nothing for a storage place???? Really???? ***Btw, Storage Mart, I still want you to compensate me for the $80 spent on that Uhaul.*** *The place is always dirty. Rat traps everywhere. *And finally, today.... So a while ago I set up an automatic monthly bill pay via their own website. For the longest time since then, it has been payed without any issue. Come today, I get a text saying that I'm over a month past due!!! Nothing has changed on how I make the payments on my end, guess it did on theirs and NO ONE INFORMED ME OF THIS CHANGE. Not via email, text, nothing. Called the number it said to call on my text just to check and make sure they hadn't removed and tossed my stuff (b/c def make sure you read your policy), and again no answer, no response, nothing. Don't expect one either. After work, today, I'm going to check on my unit, hoping everything is there. If it is, then on top of rebuilding a fence this weekend, I'm getting everything out of this third rate, dingy, crap-hole sad excuse of storage facility and putting a stop payment on any further billing from this facility. ***I DO NOT RECOMMEND utilizing this facility.*** P.S. To management, if you're reading this, don't bother responding. It's not like you ever did anyway, even when I was nice through out my numerous requests. read more

At first this seemed like a really great place to store my things for the summer while I went home from college. I prepaid for the unit and the manager seemed really friendly and helpful. However, when I came back to pick up my things I was to there were more fees to pay that I wasn't made aware of before. The manager was extremely rude and unhelpful and acted like I was purposely not trying to pay even after I tried to explain the miscommunication. On top of that, when I went to pick up my things there were rats in my storage locker!! Literally crawling up and down my things as I opened the door. My clothes and bedding are all ruined and the rest is a hit of miss with what I can clean. It's covered in feces and completely disgusting. Never going there again. read more

From my first phone call and visit, these guys have me believing that great customer service still exists. Yonas and John were super caring and helpful in making sure I saw and was satisfied with the rental space before I signed up, and have been kind and interested in my happiness every time I dash over for something. I Walked in StorageMart on 5/29/2015 and store met the manager Natnael Embaye was very responsive to my needs for a storage unit right way.He was very personable guy as well. He helped me decided on a 10 by 8 unit after looking at a few storage units. Natnael was extremely professional and courteous about my storage needs. I also would like to thank John for his outstanding customer service. He even helped me move up 1 cart of boxes to my storage unit, He explained how to use to security gate code and how to use the freight elevators. Overall my experience at this storageMart was a great and pleasurable one. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for courteous and professional people to lend a hand when you need it most and of course an inexpensive place to store their household goods. read more

As far as storage units go, I think this location is fabulous! I rented here for about 12 years, then at the request of family members, moved my things to a shared unit at Public Storage in Berkeley at 1120 - 2nd Street, 2 years ago. I only did that to help defray the costs at Public Storage, but it turned out to be an awful experience, but now I'm happily back at StorageMart (with all the storage that was at Public Storage. I will never use them again.) Don't let the looks of this building, or the neighborhood, deceive you. I've never had any problems in this area, and I've never had a single problem with the 3 units I've rented over the years. The staff is very courteous, and friendly and Brandon is an excellent manager who goes out of his way to help customers (Tishone is also professional and very nice to work with, and John responds quickly too any maintenance needs.) The units are not new, and some have nontraditional measurements, but they're clean and dry and they do the job! There are mouse traps, but that's a preventative measure all storage facilities use, including Public Storage in Berkeley (I'll do a review about them on their page.) StorageMart's prices are competitive and they don't increase the rent by high percentages, like other businesses do to make up for that "first month" deal. They really are all around a decent place to store your belongings. I suspect they're even safer than the newer looking facilities exactly because the building looks old from the outside. (Public Storage in Berkeley has had more than a dozen units burglarized this year, mine included, and I lost many sentimental family items there.) The moral to my story is: Don't judge a storage facility by its looks! StorageMart is the only facility I recommend to friends and anyone looking for a decent place. read more

The customer service for this location is 5 STARS and the employee Yonas was a huge help in backing my truck up. If it hadn't been for him I wouldn't have been able to unload my truck. I had an emergency load with not much time to unload into the storage space and that was the only reason I picked this place. For a quick place to drop off your stuff this location is suitable, but the quality of the interior and general cleanliness is terrible. I was afraid of leaving my stuff honestly because the place smelled like rats and the reason I left asap. For the price they charge you can find a much better and cleaner facility. The facility also has irregular shaped units that are priced by standardization which makes absolutely no sense. If Storagemart priced their units based on the individual units and charged half the amount they would do much better business. They might be able to afford charging half if they stopped their $1 first month deal and charged half price for a few months instead while also charging less for all the spaces. They would drive in more traffic and have more long term tenants. I would've stayed if they did this. I was paying $88 that should've been $45-55. Upper management needs improvement! Not the employees! read more

The On-site staff is professional, courteous and patient. My praise ends there. There are a few general maintenance issues which have caused me great inconvenience. For weeks the elevator in my part of the building was broken. They kept saying it will be "another week'. They said I could use the big freight elevator, but that only goes to the third floor. So, I had to carry everything by hand up to the 4th floor. Back in June or July, 2 of the 4 carts were stolen. It made a huge difference in wait time. There was often a logjam because of the missing carts. I spoke to the office often and to Roland, the regional manager. I was always told "couple more weeks" or something to that effect. It has been 8 months now!! I spoke to Roland again in December. He said the replacement carts would be there "in two days". That was two months ago. Still no carts! I finally demanded contact with the owners directly. (As a business owner myself, I would want to know about such persistent problems). The office staff told me I need to go online and contact the company. Then my letter goes to the regional manager's desk where he decides whether to pass it on to the owners. Well, then what's the point!!!!? For the quality of service, Storagemart is the most expensive storage I've ever had. Joe read more

I'm giving a good review, even though I am very pleased to leave this place behind me. My ex and I broke up and I had to move out of her place. Their $35/month storage unit was a lifesaver -- to be clear though, it was a raised unit that required a ladder to access. That's fine, whatever, it was by far the most affordable place around. The unit was very large for the price, too. I moved my stuff in one night, coming straight from my ex's place to StorageMart. While I was wheeling my cart in, a box fell off and nudged another patron's car. The guy freaked out, saying I had damaged his car and blah blah blah. He followed me up to my unit, threatened to beat the shit out of me, and demanded compensation. I went straight down to the office and called the cops with the desk folks watching. The guy continued to threaten me and also accused me of being high and drunk (I was sad and exhausted after moving out of my ex's house, but NOT high or drunk by any means). I waited around in the office until he left. Oakland PD never showed. I vowed to get my stuff out as soon as I could. I'm still giving 4 stars because the office staff stayed calm and told me later that they deal with that kind of nonsense frequently. When I came back to move my stuff out they gave me a discount because of what I'd dealt with the last time. Yunos was super nice and helpful. Great customer service even in a really shitty situation. Props, guys. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that there were lots of pest traps around -- I didn't see any rodents and no evidence of rodent infestation in my stuff, which i just moved out of there, but still. Other than that the staff and facility are 100% professional, affordable, and awesome. They're in a pretty crime-ridden neighborhood and do an excellent job considering that. I'd recommend bringing a friend or two with you when you visit this place, but if you're willing to put up with the neighborhood it's worth it. read more

This place is disgusting. Carts that don't go to the units. Dirty. Smelly. He tried to sell me a unit that was over $3 per sq. ftt. (more than retail space in downtown Oakland) with no light in it and so difficult for cats to get to you have to lug your heavy loads from the hallway to the unit. They used a bait and switch on me and tried to sell me a smaller, more expensive unit than I reserved. Oh and lets not forget that they guy got my credit card stolen. Left on the counter unattended...and was mad at me that I was going to make him stay later than the closing time. Yes, in fact, took my U-Haul keys and tried to drive the truck out of there while I was on the phone trying to cancel my credit card in a panic. He also refused to call the police, or the manager, or look at the surveillance tape...a few days later when I called to talk to the manager and they guy pretended it was him. When I told him I knew he wasn't the manager he hung up on me. When I called the main line to talk to district manager they never called back. DO NOT RENT THERE! Sketchy and gross.. read more

The best part of this place is the great service- manager Natnael Embaye is courteous and professional and will help you get set up right away. John is also great and very helpful. The second best part of this place is the pricing- great value, especially if you are able to use one of the smaller lofted/attic-like spaces in the $30-35/month range. Note that these do require first a ride in the freight elevator, followed by locating a metal staircase in order to reach your unit. It's not recommended to put anything too large/heavy up there because you will have to lift them up via the metal staircase. I figured this isn't a big deal since I don't plan on moving things in and out very often. StorageMart only has 2 parking unloading spots so that can be annoying, but the 3 times I've gone so far, I've been either able to get one of those spots or one right outside on the street. The street is a bit farther with a dolly, but not too bad at all. Bring your own lock if you don't want to buy one there. Also bring proof of renter's or homeowner's insurance if you don't want their $9.99/month plan. You can elect for autopay. Overall, tops for customer service and value! read more

Yonas listened to me and helped me find the best unit for my price range. He used the ongoing deals to help negotiate a lower price to fit my budget and he even helped me move to a different unit when I needed less space. All my brand new furniture was covered in rat feces and urine and damaged by chew marks after two months of storing here. Their customer service was ok but it took countless hours after moving out of the unit for me to clean everything I had stored here and most of my furniture is permanently damaged from bite marks on the sides. I had to rent a steam cleaner and the low price of the storage unit was NOT worth it because of how much I had to spend on cleaning overall afterwards. I received a follow up from Matt after writing a review similar to this one and he let me know that the manager would contact me but I never heard anything back from anyone. DO NOT STORE HERE unless you're ok with rats using your belongings as a toilet. read more

Right after moving in we lost the key to our lock in the moving truck and Nate helped us cut the lock at no charge. I would recommend this storage facility to anyone hands down. I needed a storage unit last minute and was struggling to find a company with low monthly costs as well as work with me immediately. This company did just that! I had all my things packed in a taxi and the staff did everything they could do to swiftly get me in and out :) The young lady at the front went through my lease agreement in detail and she did her best to go through all my information in order for me to catch the taxi out. The other gentleman helped me to make sure I received the perfect unit and that I was able to put away all my belongings. The manager is an amazing individual who does not compromise on the quality of customer service his establishment provides.
