My friend lives near here, so it was an easy place to give a try to see if we should return. At the end we both agreed it was worth a try but not really a repeat. Seafood isn't cheap anymore, I acknowledge, but then it's how much you get for your money. The stuffed scallop is mostly stuffing with very little scallop. I forget my other dish but same impression: heavy on money, light on seafood. Hey, that's how they stay in business. Service was also slow and really not much to it - you're eating in an enclosed outside space and they bring you food and that's about it. Nothing terrible here, but I'm gonna keep looking for a combination of atmosphere, service, and food that matches what comes out of my wallet. First timer here... very cute location themed out door seating tables with umbrellas cash only. This place was featured on a show claiming best lobster grilled cheese. We have to give this place a try we ordered 4 lobster rolls and honestly we were not impressed rather underwhelmed. The lobster was rubbery, seemed like it was old or frozen meaning didn't seem fresh at all, lacked butter and the rolls were basic. The meat was sparse in Comparison to other local places (Milford) that serve lobster rolls. The rolls were priced comparatively to most at 22$ a roll. I suppose everyone has their own opinion we truly don't think these lobster roll measure up maybe a bad day maybe a bad lobster maybe a bad cook day. read more

Wow! This is by far one of our favorite seafood places everrrrr! The soups are amazing! 10/10 must order! The lobster roll is perfect too - they add a lot of lobster!! The fish sandwich and the lobster roll didn't have much flavor, but by adding a few condiments to them they were fine. The food was freshly made while you waited. I have had better but the fact that it is freshly made raises the points for me. The fact that the business is across the street from the beach is also a plus for me. There is a small parking lot with no street parking around the business. I can see that this is a problem during the summer and weekends during the summer. Tried to order the Treasure Chest for $50.00, but they were out of fish. The cashier said I couldn't substitute the fish with another type, and I would have to order two Combos for $78.00 to equal the Treasure Chest, The cashier was not very helpful at all. I even asked to order it without the fish, but they couldn't do that. Again I would have to order two Combos. Stowe's was 3.5 stars for me. No doubt about the food being good. I think my favorite thing out of everything we had was the lobster bisque. It had chunks of real lobster scattered throughout which was very nice. The clam chowder was also pretty good. I regret not looking at the food pics posted on here for reference because they do give you a lot of food so initially when I saw that 1 choice of seafood, french fries and coleslaw was $17 I instead ordered the fish sandwich which I don't regret doing but I'd know better for next time. Their portions are big and two people can easily share from one meal unless you're really hungry. They're cash only which we were not expecting so I think that too limited us from ordering what we really would have wanted to order. SO and I decided on the Treasure Chest. Fish filets, shrimp, scallops, clams with tartar and cocktail sauces with a side of coleslaw. Also ordered was a bowl of clam chowder and a seafood chili. Turns out we were unable to finish what we bought, so it went home with us via a cooler. Chili was delish! Could have eaten a lot more of that. Was similar to a cioppino I ate out in Cali. Fish market attached also had additional stuffed fish options. Did not buy any this time. Parking is amble. There's a great beach across the street. Staff are friendly. Having lunch at Stowe's sure made me feel like I was on vacation somewhere. I loved the vibe of the place -call it Ocean Kitsch. What else would you call a place with pirate imagery, a mermaid skeleton, a giant inflatable Minion wearing a pirate hat, and Jolly Roger flags? Under Covid procedures, you line up at the ordering window and pick up a few stations down. The interior dining room is closed but there are quite a few picnic tables all over. Seafood is king here, with chowders, seafood chili, bisque and a gumbo. Now it's serious seafood time, with Shrimp, Scallops, Clams, Crab Cake, Sole, Haddock, Cod, Oysters, Squid, Salmon, Tuna, Swordfish, and Tilapia plates, all kinds of seafood rolls (lobster, shrimp, squid, scallops, clam and crab), plus specials, grilled cheese options and some things for the seafood haters, like hot dogs and chicken. I 've never seen Seafood Chili on any menu before, so I jumped at the chance to try it. Man, oh man, was it great! Some good-sized shrimp, minced seafood, and veggies in a surprisingly zippy broth. I LOVED it and at just $4 a cup it was a very fair price. I went with a Fried Scallop Boat ($15) with a choice of side and either tartar or cocktail sauce. I went with French Fries (a big portion) and cocktail sauce, which was just as zippy as the chili -if you like horseradish, you'll do handsprings over it. So there you have it, our lunch for three (cod boat, lobster grilled cheese, a water and two beverages ran under $60, and no one went hungry. For the food, value, atmosphere, and being a few hundred feet from the beach, you can't beat it. We were very happy with our visit, and as some Yelpers mentioned, the only down side is the tiny parking lot. So be prepared to park a ways away, and walk over, like we did. read more

Last week while at the beach in West Haven, we stopped by Stowe's Seafood across the street. This place is so adorable. They have the cutest straw umbrellas for sitting outside. There is no indoor seating, it's just a small shack for ordering. The inside and outside are filled with all kinds of pirates and treasure chests, and all kinds of fun island memorabilia, it's like finding a treasure, seeing it all. They have all kinds of fresh local fish dishes in their menu, including Clam Chowder, and lobster rolls. There's a lot to choose from, there's a variety of sides and appetizers. We got their "boat" to share, there's a variety of seafood to choose for this combo. My friend and I went with the Cod. It comes with fries or coleslaw. We went with the fries. We also got the New England Chowder. The "boat" doesn't come in any type of pretty presentation. It's all inside of a styrofoam container. While the Cod was plentiful and fresh for two to share, I didn't like how how it was coated, it was greasy and took away from the freshness. The fries were fine, they were generously cut and there were also plenty of them. The Clam Chowder was pretty good, it was $7.00 for a styrofoam cup, which they call a bowl. I've previously had other things here, I remember everything was greasy and very bland. The only winner is the Clam Chowder. It's a bit more watery then I prefer, but still very solid, hearty and filling. I suppose after spending a full day in the sun and water, this will work fine to fill your appetite, but it's far from delicious or amazing. If you want the BEST fried lobster tail go to Stowe's. It was so very sweet and fresh it was $15.00 bucks. You will eat one and will want another one but don't go crazy. Also, the clam strips - no bellies are very good as well. The french fries are good when you know you don't need ketchup. But ask for some ketchup anyway you must might want to dip a few fries. Well I cannot show the picture of the haddock fish sandwich because we at it before I took the pictures. It was very good. I will now switch from cod because the haddock fish has more flavor. I've tried multiple times over the years, mostly during the summer season, to dine here but the long lines were prohibitive. This past weekend worked to my advantage; the wait was less than 15 mins from order to table; soups are served immediately before another customer is queued up, nice touch. The RI clam chowda was deliious, chock-full of clams, potatoes, carrots, onions, celery with a full flavored clam broth, certainly one of the best you'll find on any chow line. The portion size of fried Haddock is much larger than it appears in the photo and absolutely scrumptious. The fish was lightly battered; fried to a crispy light perfection, it would be very hard to top Stowe's fried food quality. Coleslaw is often hit or miss, mostly a miss, just not here, this was dramatically better than you'll find in the best fried seafood houses. My overall first time impression was borderline blown away. Stowe's does an exceptional job from order entry to quality work in the kitchen to self-service window pickup. They are extremely well organized, efficient, friendly and understand that hospitality is every bit as important as what comes out of the kitchen. Give'm a try and see if you don't agree. read more

I was really between a 3 and a 4. We frequent Lenny and Joe's in Madison, and while the staff were WAY more friendly here, the food was really not better (though definitely not worse). I'd rate the food a 3.5 but the fact that it's across from the beach (and I love the outdoor seating area and friendly staff), I bumped the score up to 4. The seafood was expensive, but you get a gigantic portion. If my husband ate fish, we could have easily split a 2 choice combo and had more than enough to share. We didn't do that, so each got an entree. It was far too much food for 1 person (woman with a decent appetite) to eat the 2 choice combo and if (when) we return - I'd definitely make better choices now knowing the size of their portions. The fries were good and so was the coleslaw. The breading on the fish/shrimp tasted nice but it was not crispy which was a bit of a disappointment. They package all the food up 'to-go' even if you're eating there. It would have likely been better served in a basket on paper so that you don't have to close the top of the cardboard box and let it steam (which likely contributes to a more soggy texture). The cod was sweet and flaky. Again - a huge portion. We started with the cup of lobster bisque. A great size portion for the price. It was good but not superb. Great thick consistency. No chunks of lobster. Not enough sherry but still tasty. Kiddos had chicken nuggets and a hot dog. The serve old-time twist top sodas in glass bottles which offered a lot of nostalgia. All and all - we had a great afternoon. Drove 30 mins from our home (instead of an hour), took a walk on the beach and had some good fried seafood. We'll be back! read more

After seeing raving reviews, I decided to go here on my last day visiting Connecticut . I was excited to try here because this would be my first experience ever having both a lobster roll and stuffed Scallops. Stowe's is located right on the corner of beach st. And Washington Ave. Not too hard to find. I did go on a Saturday morning so parking was limited with a full parking lot and street regulations, so be ready to park near by, which was not an issue at all. With the amount of people + the huge line, + all the tables filled... I felt confident that this place had to be as good as the reviews.... Unfortunately, I felt as if, the food was just alright. Nothing spectacular and nothing to rave about. A 5 star review for me, would be contributed to several factors, such as: If the food is actually great -like I want to come back here again "great," - the ambiance, price point of the food -if it matches the food quality/size/taste,- experience, & customer service, to name a few. Some of which that were lacking was the 'WoW' factor of the food, and the price point. I can only give this place a 3 star because, again the food was alright... I would never succumb food quality for price... But I thought for the portion and how underwhelming the taste of the food was, the price of these dishes did NOT equate. The bread for the lobster roll was super soft (soggy like) it broke apart in my hands by just lifting it up to take a bite. The stuffed Scallops was a singular shell (see picture) with a mixture of stuffing, shrimp and scallops.. the flavor of both these dishes were just alright, I had taken some hot sauce packets which helped... Because, it's right across from the water I grabbed my food and a blanket -I luckily had one in my trunk- and ate on the beach. I came here for lunch on a weekend and was pleasantly surprised! I was in the area at a neighboring beach. I'm so glad that I found this place. The Manhattan clam chowder and clams were amazing! These were the best things that I tried. I also ordered the fish, fries, and coleslaw. If I came back, I'm definitely get the soup and clams, again. The lobster roll here was also tasty. A friend and I were in the mood for seafood and this place popped onto my timeline, so we decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise on a beautiful summer day. Stowe's is a small but mighty seafood shack across from a beach in West Haven. On a Saturday at about 5:15pm we walked right in and ordered and grabbed a seat at one of the picnic tables in their outside seating area. We received our order about 20 minutes later, a heaping pile of crispy, fresh fried seafood delight. For $35, the treasure chest houses shrimp, scallops, haddock, sole, a fried crab cake and seriously the biggest clam strips I've ever seen! Fries and toast as honorable mention. Beware, we made it just before the rush it seems. By about 5:30 the line was out of the door. Stowe's also has a number of specially prepared items like stuffed clams, stuffed shrimp, stuffed portabellas, and stuffed potatoes... All delicious! They have a variety of soups from clam chowder to lobster bisque. They offer a seafood chili, i wasn't a fan, but ppl i know liked it. They also have a number of sandwiches and seafood rolls. It is more than just the Lobster Roll which ppl trave about, but i have yet to try. I have had the Lobster Grilled Cheese. The sweet buttery fresh lobster have a new angle to the classic sandwich. This review actually pains me to write. When I think of Stowe's I've always thought of my favorite childhood seafood spot that is so tasty and delicious that I would drive over 30 mins to visit. When I came back to Stowe's after the remodeling I was so excited to get my favorite dish and try their lobster roll as I've been on this crazy lobster kick since my Maine honeymoon! I couldn't believe the price hike! What I known to be the $12 clam strip boat soared to $17! I wouldn't mind even paying that as their portions are always enough to feed 2, but the food tasted nothing like I remember. Lobster roll- When I opened the burger sized togo box I was shocked to see a tiny roll! The amount of lobster was ok for the size but I couldn't stop thinking about how dissatisfying this lobster roll looked. The lobster was so over cooked it was actually crispy which I've never experienced in my life of eating lobster rolls! It tasted like they used frozen lobster and then pan fried it way too long. Some of the lobster pieces were actually brown which was a huge turn off and scared me to even consume it. I would never ever order this again from here. Clam strip boat with fries- The clam strip boat was a huge serving of fried clam strips and fries. When I took the first bite this is when the disappointment had set in. The clam strips which I ate immediately in the parking lot were so packed full of breading I could hardly taste the clam at all. It was also so battered that they weren't even crunchy at all, it's like I was eating mush. The texture just completely turned me off. As I went for the fries next in hopes they would still be the crunchy yummy fries I have always remembered I was struck with yet another disappointment. The fries had no salt and were drenched with pepper. The once crunchy flavorful fries I remember had disappeared. I actually wanted to shed a tear because I was dreaming about coming here since they closed and was so disappointed with this visit I'm not sure I'll take the trip back. I really wish I had something better to say as I've always loved this restaurant but I couldn't in good conscience write a review they didn't deserve. This place is situated in front of a small beach. There is a walking trail (Savin Rock Trail) which leads to Old Grove park. Its a fun place to get some seafood and have it in some outdoor seating. There is no indoor seating. Parking space is limited, but you can park in the nearby streets. Some streets are for permit parking, so be careful with street sign. Stuffed Salmon and sweet potato fries were my favorites. Fried lobster roll is not as good as a normal lobster roll. I think lobsters are not supposed to be fried. Hot chowder was too watery. I noticed the boxed portions are smaller, via posted reviews, but have not yet been in to see if the prices also shrunk. UPDATE 7/23/2023 Totally new and different vibe, here. No indoor seating at all now although they do have enclosed seating (under a tent) outdoors as well as several tables outdoors under "grass" umbrellas. The long picnic table (30ft. long?) is gone (Hooray!) and has been replaced by several individual tables which I like because it was very awkward to be eating and have a complete stranger sit down right next to you! You order indoors and there is an ATM inside too (cash only at this place!) as well as refrigerators containing fresh seafood (and freshly prepared seafood like stuffed scallops, clams, shrimp, lobster tails, etc) to take home and cook. We stood indoors in a crowd of people for almost 30 minutes to give our order because the order taker is too slow! There were no open windows or ventilation, just an air conditioner, so it's not safe and I wish they would go back to taking orders at the outside window to keep everyone safe! Went here yesterday bc of craving seafood! Little parking lot, located across from the beach in west haven. Parking is a little tricky but not impossible. We got a single combo of the catfish and then the choice with two items combo with fries (shrimp and clam strips) the clam strips were ok not much too them but the shrimp was sooo big and tasty, not greasy at all. Same with the catfish, meaty and crispy. There's like 15 outdoor tables so good amount of room which I appreciate. No indoor dining but I did see there's cases where you can buy raw seafood and thinks to prepare at home. Prices were fair, seafood is expensive no matter where you go and we were impressed with the portion size for the price. But only 1 lemon slice for each big pricey portion of seafood is a little stingy, come on guys it's a lemon and seafood and lemon go together why not give a few?? read more

I'm a sucker for fried seafood. And where I live in Central New Jersey, it's not too accessible. If there was a store like this nearby I'd probably come very often. Outdoor dining was nice and spacious with umbrella covering. Nice view of the sea across the street. They sell special Lobster Rolls (3 ways: salad, fried, sauted). I got the fried, of course! We also got a "Boat" to share which includes two fried items of your choice (we chose clams and scallops), + fries. There are other options (I remember catfish being one I would want to try). They also have soft shell crab, but we showed up at 11am Saturday, and they were waiting for their daily delivery. That's a sign they get really fresh seafood, but some of my friend really wanted to try it, they didn't have a chance. Be ready to eat a lot of fried food. I love this, but some of my friends weren't quite ready for it so the all the fried food was a lot for them. They have some cool sodas from a local brand. Definitely a treat for me. read more

Very tasty seafood restaurant at the edge of the water, with a full freezer of items to pack and take home. The seating inside is tight and can be a bit loud, while outside has four large open tables under a pergola. They have some of the best clam chowder and lobster bisque I've had. The stuffed scallop and shrimp (a baked combo with breadcrumbs) were amazing, and the lobster roll was nearly perfect. They're missing a legitimate restroom for their customers. They will direct you to a portable outhouse at the edge of the property, which on hot days isn't a great experience. All in all, a really great stop when visiting the town and the beach. read more

I think we came on the perfect day (Friday), at the perfect time (2pm), because we parked right in front and there were no lines. However, it got busier as we were sitting inside, eating. We ordered a little bit of everything, since it was our first time having seafood in Connecticut, and we wanted to sample as much as we could. Of the 3 clam chowders, the white and creamy New England was our fave. The Rhode Island was too plain. The Manhattan was similar to the RI, but had a little bit more flavor, with the red broth. The lobster roll was buttery, flaky, delicious. Loved it! The stuffed clam was also very flavorful and yummy. The lobster mac n cheese balls were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside and good. The small parking lot was full (only about 15 spots) but there was plenty of street parking on the street around the corner. It would have been helpful to let customers know with some signage because as soon as I walked back to the lot, there were four cars standing that blocked anyone else from leaving the lot. The other major complaint is that the few staff I saw wearing masks had them pulled under their chins which frankly didn't inspire confidence. We ordered a crabcake sandwich, softshell crab sandwich, and a lobster roll. Walking through the food: Crabcake - unusual but good flavors and definitely two hearty cakes for $10. Softshell - very tasty and well done. $16 mp the day we were there. However, the MP was not listed on the board and we had to ask a few times to get the price. Sauteed lobster roll, $19 - the best thing we got by far very tasty and would come back for it definitely. Standard small size roll.
