Poor attitudes from some of the staff. Eye rolling, not responding when greeted, body odor, unkempt, profiling, etc. Why be in customer service with that behavior? Better yet, why is that type of poor behavior the norm at this location? Will be shopping elsewhere. I'm done. read more

Let me start by saying that i think this store itself is fine, their prices are stupidly high though. Now to dice further into the real reason for this review. Tonight they fired him. Let me begin with he is a good worker. He shows up early and stays his shift. They let him go because he called off twice in the few weeks he's been there because we were very sick, and he didn't want to take that to work. They let him go without a verbal warning, without a written warning, they even let him bike all the way there and then let him go. (we don't have a working vehicle right now) They'll fire the employee who shows up but not the one that no calls no shows. That is fact. I am incredibly disappointed in this display and management should be ashamed. We can't even go to contest it because my partner signed the release forms not knowing it would affect that. If you value a healthy work environment don't work here. read more

I just want to say that LANDEN in the deli and food area was so nice and so kind and so professional and he took the time to get me a fresh piece of chicken. What a kind sweetheart went out of his way to pack my gravy in an extra bag so it wouldn't spill on my way home. He is a great example and should be employee of the month. read more

UPDATE: After a prompt response from someone at this Stracks location, I contacted the store and spoke with one of the owners,Tom Ard, who apologized for the inconvenience and let me know steps were being taken to resolve the issue. He was extremely nice and understanding about the situation and even offered me a gift card for my troubles. I generally enjoy shopping here and wish to continue doing so. After this conversation, they still have my business. Please Stracks in Portage enforce the rules. I like the 1 way aisles. People were not following this I was in there today. It seems 2 of the people who chose to do what they wanted didnt wear a mask either. There was a wrong way shopper on the phone too. There were also staff there when it happened. The original supermarket of Portage - before Ultra Wal-Mart or whatever. This place is great for decent prices, and their produce is usually decent depending on what you're looking for. The deli is fresh and very accommodating to whatever one might need, and the selection of foods is pretty decent. If you don't mind paying a little bit extra and feel like running with the little guy, shop here if you're in Portage. read more

Just your average supermarket not a whole lot to say so I'll keep it short and sweet. The store is pretty clean it's gotten a lot better and it's been remodeled a little lately. I come here basically for sale items. They have a decent deli and meat department. The produce department is on the larger side which is good and it's normally fresh. Overall just your basic local grocery store. They do have a little sushi area, salad bar, olive bar and some miscellaneous chicken wings which I wouldn't eat they also look gross. I do like the fact that there seafood department will cook the fish for you for free when you buy which is a plus and makes for a fast dinner! Overall decent store I don't mind coming here and they have good prices. Recently just added utility clerks to help customers take groceries out to the car so that's nice. They have reasonable priced food and the store is clean most of the time. read more

I guess I will no longer shop at portage. Will go to hobart. 2nd complaint with cashier in a month. Most are polite. Today at check out I had to cough. Masked of course. I covered anyway and coughed down to floor. I'm a nurse I know what to do. Cashier immediately turned her back with arms up in air waving. I will not accept that behavior. Literally every person working the front today either has their mask below their chin or under their nose. Why not just forgo the masks if you can't cover your nose? Don't like wearing them?neither do those working in the hospital, but they do it to protect you. read more

Beware - if you're not a fan of crowds, it is best to avoid this place between the hours of 5pm-7pm. T&C can get really annoying when it is crowded. Also, if you go, double check your receipt to make sure you are being charged correctly - every time we shop here, at least one item is not priced in the computer right, and we end up having to go to the customer service desk to have them correct our overpriced item(s). I know it is not the cashier's mistake - but it is VERY inconvenient to have to go back to customer service over a dollar. And yes, I will get my dollar back...they add up after awhile. On a positive note, the staff I have encountered have all been generally pleasant to deal with and friendly. They have great sales - actually, the only items I ever purchase are usually on sale - otherwise, they are normally a little pricier than I'd prefer to pay. I question the freshness of their deli meat...I had an unpleasant experience with ham a few weeks ago; I don't want to go into too much detail but I will leave you with the word "slimy" to describe my deli lunch meat experience. read more

I would much rather shop at a real grocery store then a super chain store. Town and Country is the original Portage grocery but I feel like they've gone down hill quite a bit. The store seems dirty, the selection of foods is mediocre (you won't find any unique or inspired ingredients here) and their deli is really low grade. The staff is quite nice though and I like the stores layout over all, I also enjoy their meat selection. Prices are average. The parking lot sucks though, it's way too small and arranged awkwardly. I'm surprised there's not more accidents there. read more

Poor customer service at the courtesy booth. The lady that usually works mornings ( I won't mention her name) is extremely rude, and doesn't even greet you or tell you have a nice day. Every time I go there, it's usaully her working and she's rude. The cashiers thru the check out lines seem to be nice but stay away from the courtsey booth when tht girl is working, cuz she truely shouldn't be in customer service. I've received better service at McDonald's along with better attitudes. I will NOT shop at this store anymore. read more

I want to say that the only reason I shop at town and country is because of my mother being a loyal employee for 20 years. I have sat back and watched her while she works and she always has a smile on her face even when I know she may be under stress or she doesn't feel good. If you do shop in the store and are ready to checkout, my mother Denise is the one to approach in line. She will greet you, she will make you feel like the loyal consumer of the store that you are. There is a lot of other employees there I won't give names that need to learn better customer service. To end my review I just want whoever reads this to enjoy being in my mothers line she's an amazing woman. read more

Kudos to the team redesigning this store...especially produce! This department has gone from confused, dingy and dated to fresh, current and inviting in just a few days. Looking for an olive bar? A salad bar to rival any restaurant? A wings bar? Maybe a sushi bar? These are all there now. Everything is changing, so for we frequent shoppers it will take a while to find everything, but it's looking very positive right now. The produce and dairy aisle changes really stand out. Still under construction, so if you're fussy about finished spaces, you may want to wait a few weeks. But it looks like T&C is really addressing the need for a 21st century market in Portage read more

They put moldy raspberry on shelf and I bought two before I realize it is so BAD. I took several pictures and took them back to store for a 3 dollar refund. you know what I got? Yelling from their store manager ( I yelled back) and threats to call police since there is an unwritten policy that I have take the moldy raspberry back to the store after 2 weeks???? Bakery department is extremely cheap, especially when it comes down to their donuts. Everything looks rushed and quickly made. After a while, it all just looks like bread with some kind of frosting on it, a variety only based by food coloring. Same stuff, different color. It's obvious donuts are put out in the morning and what's there is it. If they're gone, too bad. If you come in at noon and there's nothing but jelly filled donuts stacked on eleven racks, too bad. I asked a question and the bakery employees at that time already mentally finished their work shift early, so I had to deal with their theatrics and eye rolls because they had no boxes for donuts out. I guess that was my problem. I'm a paying customer, so clearly I'm annoying and wasting their time. The selection of donuts are always the donuts no one likes, rushed, quickly made, and then maybe a dozen of the donuts people DO like, but they're gone. Nobody wants bread lightly dusted with cinnamon. Nobody wants a dozen powdered donuts with processed jelly. Everyone wants cake donuts, frosted with sprinkles and because they're more time consuming, you only make five of them. Hire a new bakery staff, please. Preferably people who want to work and not cut corners in order to get to their next cigarette break. Also, please check the donut windows. Clean them. They are dirty every time I shop at this store. UPDATE: Bakery donuts are much better and the selection is fantastic. Donut windows are much cleaner. Now you have to work on the fruit fly and gnat problem. I had seen them circling around inside the donut case the last 3 times I was there. We're dealing with dough and bread and icing. You have to really stay on top things when dealing with a plethora of sugar products. read more

Avoid the meat department. Bought 3 sirloins from them and had to throw them out after i got home to cook them. Rotten meat sold here. Literally smashed between fork with ease. Ground beef is always brown in middle with layer of fresh on the outside. read more

Clean and well lit, though some aisles are rather narrow. The pricing is relatively good if you pay attention to the sale flyer they provide. Staple items are frequently on special pricing. I find my average cart to be cheaper there than at Walmart. Very broad inventory - many specialty items, but not especially well laid out. I often have to ask an employee for help finding things. Different brands of the same item may be in different aisles! Good luck finding the tonic water on your own! The employees are always friendly, and will guide you to what you seek. A sushi bar in this area? Outstanding! Produce is a solid B or B+, but don't look for many exotics. Deli is only fair, 95% routine stuff. The "fresh" shrimp has been frozen. Beer and wine aisles are substantially mass market brands. All together, it is the best alternative in the area. read more

I shop at Town and Country every single day because I love to cook and make 2 to 3 meals a day in my house. The needed a certain vinegar and the shelf sign said they sold it- after digging on the shelf I found the last one. The lady at the cash register told me to go to the courtesy desk to make sure that they re-order. Although I didn't have time- I went over there. The lady didn't look up from her magazine that she was reading (not job related) brushed me off and said o.k. that she would tell the night manager. REALLY? You didn't even look at the item. Not a way to treat a loyal customer of 30 plus years- that really irked me and I have never in my life posted a bad review of any store- but that lack of customer service really got to me. Read your People magazine on your own time!! read more

I have found everyone who works at this store to be very pleasant and helpful, whether it's the clerks at check-out, baggers, the seafood counter, or if you're just calling in to check whether an item is in stock. Thank you T&C staff! I typically find what I need at this store for regular weekly shopping, including organic milk and some (many but not all) vegetarian items. Sometimes I can't find a specific herb (ie fresh mint) and sometimes an item of produce will look off, but I have found that to be true of Jewel in Chesterton as well. In fact, sometimes it's better at T&C! Wish there was more organic/ethical meat here--that's one issue. Also: there's a lack of ambience in this store. It's just too darn bright, too many LEDs. Management: perhaps you could at least switch to 'warm' LEDs? Meier has a similarly massive store (even more so), but their lighting is a little more inviting. Anyway, that's a minor issue.
