We were fortunate enough to grab a table during the World Cup match since the lounge seating was first come first served. Oddly, we weren't provided menus and had to request them ourselves at the front. Our server took quite some time to initially check on us, though she was consistent with water refills afterward. Food timing was extremely inconsistent, with dishes arriving at completely different points throughout the match. The fries came out around halftime while the final noodle dish didn't arrive until nearly the end. *Clarified Milk Punch: tasted nothing like its listed ingredients of Thai tea, tamarind, spices, and whiskey. There was no noticeable fragrance, warmth, or spice profile, and I genuinely couldn't detect any alcohol. *Straits Smashburger: came with two promising patties and white American cheese. However, instead of the advertised pickled shiitake mushrooms, we received an entire raw mushroom cap. The fries lacked both garlic flavoring and toppings. Their purchasable Sambal fancy sauce also lacked complexity and tasted more like a thicker ketchup. *Crispy Cauliflower: unfortunately undercooked and unpleasant. The portion was meager and the light coating had not fried properly, leaving behind a grainy texture. The lime aioli was creamy and bright, though it couldn't salvage the raw crunch. *Straits Frites: a very small portion for $15, but admittedly quite tasty. The fries were crispy outside and fluffy within. Each piece had visible minced garlic and the intense garlic flavor worked wonderfully. The lime aioli paired well here too. *Pad Thai: far from authentic but still passable. The noodles had a nice chew and were evenly coated, though the toppings felt sparse compared to the generous amount of noodles. The sauce leaned overly sweet without enough savory depth or acidity. *Garlic Noodles: their signature dish for good reason. The noodles were thoroughly coated in a rich garlicky, peppery sauce and easily carried the strongest seasoning of the night. The shiitake mushrooms were juicy and slightly sweet. There wasn't much bok choy, but what was there absorbed the sauce beautifully. *Spicy Street Noodles: also labeled as Mee Goreng. These had a pleasantly pungent aroma that I personally enjoyed, though it may be overwhelming for some. The house sambal tomato sauce almost carried a fish sauce quality. The noodles were slightly overcooked but coated well. This dish leaned quite salty and desperately needed more lime for balance. This was ultimately a 1.5 star experience rounded downward because most of my party had such a poor time. Throughout dinner, wrong dishes repeatedly arrived at our table and we were interrupted three separate times by food intended for other guests. While I enjoyed the garlic noodles, I especially felt bad for my vegetarian companion who ended up disappointed by the poorly executed cauliflower. How frustrating my son didn't want anything to do with them. Kept them cause we don't like sending food back. Ordered A plain cheeseburger so he can eat, just meat and cheese, well that comes with sauce! Ugh had to play mind games with son and tell him it was cheese melted. Went to Straits for brunch on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to find it quiet and welcoming. It must've been before the rush hit so we were able to enjoy a quiet brunch with some hearty food. The chicken wings were incredible - albeit a little expensive for what we get - but we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had our management dinner here and were one of the first reservations of evening. The server was incredibly patient and polite, which we appreciated. After years of walking by and wondering about the food, I'd say it was just okay. My director and I both ordered the garlic noodles, but neither of us could really taste any garlic. They were heavy on the pepper, decent, but not what we were expecting. Everyone else's dishes looked so-so as well, nothing really stood out. The chicken lollipop appetizers and calamari were good, but it's hard to go wrong with fried food. The Moonlit Lily mocktail was delicious, though, and definitely a highlight. Went for Valentine's Day dinner and had a good time. First time in Santana Row in over a decade and have to admit, it's pretty amazing how crowded it is now in the area. Suggest going early as there are a few big parking garages, but lots of traffic on a Saturday and takes some time to get into the garages, too. As for Straights, we sat outside in the front patio since we had our dog and the staff was very nice and accommodating. We ate somewhat early at 5:45 so plenty of tables and heat lamps were helpful for outside seating in February!! Inside restaurant seemed bustling and lively, with a large fashionable looking bar/lounge area that seems like a good place for a cocktail or two after shopping or to start a nice night out! Enjoyed our meal and attentiveness of our server! The Roti Prata was very good with a nice creamy curry dipping sauce. We liked the Golden Crunchy Salad, too, with refreshing taste with nice crispy crunch from dried noodle topping. We must've went at an awful time since there was only 1 server for the whole restaurant for morning and lunch time. The experience was absolutely terrible, we ordered 3 smash burgers and 3 kimchi Bloody Marys and continued to sit for an entire 40 minutes before checking in with our server. "The drinks are being made and coming out!" Cool, it is busy due to the end of the San Jose half marathon so it's understandable. I kid you not, another 40 minutes passes and the waiter finally drops by to apologize and say "the order wasn't processed and I have to re-fire the order. It'll take another 20 minutes for the food to come out oooorrrrr..." OR WHAT?! OR WHAT?! WE CAN JUST LEAVE?! You gotta be kidding me at least act like you want us there. We have been here for an hour and a half with NOTHING so I was a bit snippy but please understand that we just ran in the 8k and it's been an hour and a half for NOTHING!! We stay which was definitely the wrong move but in for a penny in for a pound ya know? Our drinks come out 10 minutes later and those Bloody Marys were WAY too spicy, like a level below Korean buldak noodle spicy, it's like it had the wrath of our server and were absolutely undrinkable. There's no way the drinks are supposed to be that spicy for the general public with no warning on the spice level (if intentional). The burgers were ok and we were just gunna leave it at that, but when I saw the receipt I knew I had to write a review. Yall please look at the attached picture. The math ain't mathing because in what world is 15% of a 64$ bill 0.60???? We were so done with this place at this point and just wanted to leave. They had a great happy hour. It was 3-7pm almost everyday. I got a picture of the happy hour. They had cocktails for $10- they were delicious and strong. I asked the bartender to make the strawberry drink a little less sweet and he took his time to taste the sweetener to make sure he knew how much to put in my drink! I love the attention to detail. My BFF took me shopping and afterwards we went to Straits. I had not eaten here and I was dying to try their Laxsa. It was much closer to what I had in Melbourne Australia where a LOT of Malaysians emigrated to. None of the other places I have tried in the US compared. We always have a great experience when we come to Straits. It's definitely on the pricier side but that's what you come to expect given the location. We don't typically get a full entree but chose different appetizers and plates to share. Not often I go out to eat and the salad is the best dish but their Fuji apple salad is top notch. Can't miss with the roti prata or samosas. The cauliflower and lollipop chicken weren't as good but still solid. Also had a non alcoholic drink (Bali breeze) that was really good. Solid restaurant. We worked closely with the manager, Lily, to organize everything, and she was incredibly responsive, organized, and professional throughout the entire process. What really stood out was how proactive she was. At many local restaurants, customers often have to initiate and follow up repeatedly, but Lily consistently checked in with us and took the lead without being asked. She made the entire planning experience so much easier for my team and me. We hosted a Lunar New Year event, and the venue was perfect. The decorations were beautiful, the service was excellent all night, and our attendees had great things to say about the food and drinks. Everything came together seamlessly. Our last experience here was really bad but Straits invited us back to give them another try. This experience on Thursday night was 1000x better. I really applaud this restaurant for taking the time to try to make things right for the customer. We had reservations for 8:30pm here but it wasn't that busy. The host took us in right away and was really nice. Our server, Tuan, came immediately to our table and was very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. He went over his recommendations and put in our orders quickly. We ordered the chicken skewers, roti (my favorite), and the wings for appetizers. All were really great and came out quick. I love the peanut butter sauce that goes with the skewers and the curry sauce for the roti. The waitress who was taking the menus said this was not the area for happy hour and happy hour was over. It was 5:58 and happy hour ends at 6 so technically we still had time to put an order in. We told them how we already moved tables for happy hour and thankfully our waiter Luis saved the day as he was willing to accommodate our happy hour order. If it wasn't for him, we would have not gotten it bc the lady was dead set on making us move again and telling us happy hour was over. As a business you can either happily invite people to come in and quickly get a last happy hour bite or rudely make it difficult for people to squeeze in a happy hour order and I feel like Straits did the later. It was an unwelcoming vibe and the waitresses didn't seem to know where happy hour was taking place. Is the food good? Yes. The corn fritters and chicken lollipops are always my go tos. The fries are good w the dips and the garlic noodles were good. Happy hour vodka drink was decent too just a bit sweet. Overall, I don't know how to feel about this place. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong from a service perspective: - I ordered Basil Gin & Tonic - I got a regular G&T - when I asked where my berries and orange and Basil and rosemary were - instead of apologizing for the wrong order, he said they ran out of those ingredients! And then the manager showed up magically, with the exact drink I had ordered - we ordered our food with the manager - then 30 mins passed- 45 mins / the main server asked if we wanted to order and we said your manager has already taken our order - he didn't bother checking - 1.5 hrs later we asked him and he said they had not put the order in at all! - finally the order came - my friend asked for a glass of wine - which never came but did show up on the bill - glad we checked the bill and asked them to remove it - we went to use the restroom and the bathroom flushes weren't working The manager did come over and apologize and took off the charges for the food that showed up 1.5 hrs late. Straits is like a little bit of Vegas on Santana Row. A fun, vibrant lounge where you can have the nightlife experience even during the day. I can't remember what drew us to this place on our first visit several years ago, but remembering what a fun time we had, we decided to make a return visit this past weekend after an appointment in the area. It's dark inside like a typical lounge, but the side facing Santana Row is wide open, which is great for people-watching. They have a pretty extensive happy hour menu 3-6pm. From the HH menu we ordered a dozen oysters, chicken satay sticks, and the garlic noodles. The chicken satay was probably the best part. I'm not much of a meat eater, but this chicken was super tender and paired very nicely with the flavorful peanut sauce. Good drinks also, with a wide selection of spirits, cocktails, mocktails, wine, and beer, something to quench everyone's thirst. The service was somewhat inconsistent, and we kept getting different servers throughout our visit, but all the servers were friendly when they did come around. As you would expect with a nightclub-like scene, music was upbeat, no downer pop here, thank you. Reminds me of our time in Serbia where literally every restaurant/cafe/bar plays upbeat music, day or night; music sets the entire mood, and it's really difficult to be down while listening to upbeat unce-unce music. Came here for happy hour during the weekday. Sad that they were already out of oysters by the time we were there, ~5pm on a Wednesday. Nonetheless, we ordered the following: -roti prata - this was yummy, crispy roti with a yellow dipping curry -straits frites - can never go wrong with fries. Came with some aioli and ketchup -crispy califlower - exactly like it sounds, crispy califlower with some aioli dipping sauce -crispy chicken lollipops - we thought this was ok, the sambal flavoring was a bit much -satay chicken sticks - comes 3-4 pieces with a dipping sauce. This was delicious. -straits poke nachos - house made chips with tuna bits and imitation crab with an avocado spread. This was alright for us. -garlic noodles - simple, a little greasy but it is garlic noodles. Overall, some food items were better than others. Service was good, the servers kept coming around to check on us often and refilled our waters multiple times. It was a nice day to sit outside and enjoy the weather and people watch. read more
