Was it outstanding and memorable? No, not really. Was it authentic? I would guess no , not really . Is it overpriced? Yes, especially for the small portion sizes. We showed up at about 5pm on a Monday night and sat outside. The plates are all on the small side , and the service was very spotty. We ordered about 5 plates and they all came out one by one. That made for an awkward dinner as someone was eating and the rest of the family watched. Our dinner came out to around 100.00 not including tip. You'll see Dumpling Times right away :) We were one of their first customers and we had our puppy with us. We first sat facing the courtyard but it was windy and chilly. The staff promptly moved us to an area of no wind and with working overhead space heater for our comfort, while maintaining our view. Our server was very attentive. I've never been to Dumpling Time but when I noticed that they served jellyfish salad, I was ALL in. Jellyfish salad is amazingly delicious especially at dim sum restaurants or even at weddings, however, the salad here was slightly different. Since we were craving just the jellyfish salad, that was all we ordered. The jellyfish was on the crunchier side and was marinated in what seemed to look like chili oil. It wasn't salty whatsoever and was slightly bland. On its own we rated it a 4/10 but once we dressed it up with extra soy and chili, it became a 7/10 as it tasted much better. The portions were reasonable, but the tables felt pretty small for a group of five, even though we didn't order a lot of food. The main reason for the lower rating, though, was cleanliness. The spoons at our table were dirty, with crusty residue inside. We went to grab Xiao Long Bao spoons from another table and noticed the same issue. Later on, we even saw another diner behind us asking for a new spoon. That was pretty off putting and not something you'd expect at this price point. I saw a customer wait for a while at the entrance, and walk out frustrated, saying, "I can't believe I had to wait 10 minutes and nobody can even take my order!" Not the staff's fault imo, they're handling a lot. Food: Egg scallion noodles 6.5/10: Tasted okay, but greasier than I would've liked. Egg was cooked well, still runny. Bbq pork bao 7/10: Not badd but could've been from the frozen section of an Asian market and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. We had the mapo tofu and the popcorn chicken . The mapo tofu was really crispy on the outside and soft tofu on the inside. The sauce it came with was spicy and went very well with the tofu. The popcorn chicken was crispy but I felt it would taste better with a sauce. I had the vegetable dumplings in a garlicky sour soup. For that cold night it brought the warmth. We began with confusion over seating, where one server told us if we waited for 10 mins, we could sit outside (which is what we wanted), while the other server said that was not possible as people outside have just begun their meals. They were respectful, but I would have appreciated some coordination between the servers. The food was unimpressive, we tried chicken bao buns (sweeter side, more dough less filling and not much flavor in the filling), lamb dumplings and chicken XLB. Overall the entire experience left us feeling very underwhelmed and we decided to leave even though we were still slightly hungry. For restaurant of that size on Santana Row, I would have expected higher standard and higher quality. Appetizers, main courses etc. We started with the wood-ear mushroom salad. It was good, mixed with some type of chili oil. We also had the green beans, which was recommended by the host. Also good. Then we had the sui mai, which was okay. I wasn't expecting much, definitely wasn't in the better half of sui mai's I've been in the past. Then we had a wide variety of the soup dumplings. You get 2 of each on the menu, which is a great way to try all of them. We weren't really blown away by any of them. The pho one was probably the best of the 5? The rest weren't our favorites. It was nice to try something different, then I realize this is exactly what fusion is. The best dishes were the veggie dishes we started with.. Service was okay at best. We were seated promptly and our sever took our order in a timely manner. Our food shortly followed. However, no one came by to explain which XLB was which in the 10pc combo. Kim chi originally tasted like pho. The server did tell us what each flavor was but our palettes couldn't tell the difference at first. Wagyu had a distinct truffle taste. Broccolini was well seasoned with garlic and well cooked. If you order any of their hot teas, make sure to wipe the bottom of the cup. Ours still had residue at the bottom. I compare this with the likes of Din Tai Fung (Valley Fair) and Dumpling Hours (in Palo Alto). Service was a bit slow. Restaurant is in a good location on Santana Row with parking really close. We used the InKind app for this visit. The pork XLB were standard dumplings with thicker skin, served in those tin foil vessels that cause the dumpling to stick and break open when removing. But the flavor was good, soup could be hotter. The pork potstickers were somewhat unique with the crusted edges. Pretty good. The Har Gow (shrimp dumplings) were fairly standard and similar to other restaurants. Still good. The snap peas were good as well, but would have loved if they were also cooked with garlic, like the green beans. The sesame balls were some of the best I've had.
