Damn this patio! It's honestly the only reason I ever hang out at Strangeways. The staff is definitely not friendly, I'm not really /that/ into craft beer. The prices are alright. I want to like it more than I do. Sunday evening was my first visit to family-owned and operated Strangeways, and it definitely won't be my last. I had seen people out on the lighted patio earlier in the season and wanted to check it out. When I heard that it had an amazing selection of beer, I wanted to go even more. Met two friends there. At first we sat at a table, expecting a waitress. We realized no waitress, so we went to the bar to order food and drink. The bartender was great! Short wait time. Good conversation. Personable. She made the ordering process easy by offering us their special beer (it had a name but can't remember.) Now I thought I considered myself an aspiring beer connoisseur, but realized I had a lot to learn! Just going to places like The Londoner, Flying Saucer, Gingerman and breweries across the nation hadn't prepared me for all the rare beer they have at Strangeways. The bartender explained that this keg is from a brewery in (some European country, forgot the name), but it is a "nomadic" brewery. I didn't know those existed. Order the goat cheese appetizer. It had me at "fried cheese and balsamic glaze." When I got it, I felt kinda fancy. It was a rich dish. Perfect pairing with a dark beer. The plaintain chips, I'm sorry, but not good. Lack of flavor. Thin and crunchy like they came out of a bag. I'm sure the homemade potato chips are better. They looked good. People at Strangeways were approachable and friendly. The bar is a good place to meet people and make friends. The music is not too loud, like at J. Blacks. We met some people who were on the Bike Friendly Oak Cliff tweed ride. This bar made me feel like I was in Austin because of the bikes, and the fact that everyone was so friendly! At first I was thinking of going to Strangeways to do a little studying, rather than Starbucks. I did not end up bringing my books, and will probably not go there to study. Although you could find a quiet corner, the lighting is not bright enough for that. The bathroom was clean. They have hooks for your purses, ladies, underneath the bar and every table! I found it interesting that they do not serve Shiner, not like I would order a Shiner at this type of place. You go here to try new and good beer. They serve liquor and wine, too, for our friends who don't drink beer. Two different people, who were also there for the first time, said this place would be perfect for private group events. The space lends itself to that with its intimite, but not intimidating, environment. Strangeways pays for parking at the grocery store across the street, Michocana I think it's called. Park there in the parking lot, in front of the grocery store, in front of Strangeways, or in the lot behind Strangeways. Chances are the parking lot will be full at Strangeways, but it was good to know that we can park across the street for free. The bartender explained to me that you can also park at the lot next door (to the west), but don't leave your car overnight there because it will get towed. Love this neighborhood divey bar. It's not too big or small. We came on a Saturday afternoon and there wasn't much of a crowd unfortunately but the drinks were delicious and strong for a good price. I'd definitely want to come back at a different time to see what the crowd is like. read more

Strangeways is a pretty nice laid back bar. The bartenders were friendly and they were able to answer my questions about the beers they offer. I'm not too sure what you expect out of a pub/bar but this is pretty much on point. The music selection isn't really my type of stuff but it's not bad. I have driven by this place, but never been. This is the kind of bar that I wish that was next door to my house. I loved it. I had a hard time picking out my beer, but the bartender was super patient and helpful. The food was good also. The fried plantains and the torta were excellent. I may have found my new favorite bar! I went for the first time this weekend and I met the owner (Erica) and she was extremely nice and personable. The service was good (the staff were all very friendly) and the prices are very reasonable. They also have an excellent beer selection, and while I didn't get to try the food, it did look tasty for bar food. The inside of the bar has an urban feel to it, making it one of the more unique bars I have been to. Good crowd and it seems like this place will be the next big thing in the coming months. Cooll laid back pretty divey place. A bit of a change from the uptown scene. The drinks are reasonably priced and you can actually have a conversation and hear what the other person is saying. I'm not familiar with the London-pub scene that this place is supposed to be tailored after - but I like it! Very laid back, not quite a dive bar, but not far from it. The service was excellent and really excited about their new endeavor. Lots of beers on the menu but they do have a complete stocked bar if you're not a beer connoisseur. I went here on New Year's and had a blast! They even gave free party favors, which I loved. Anyway, this place is so nice and laid-back, they didn't even card us or anything when we walked in. There is a huge selection of alcohol, but truthfully I don't remember any of it now. There is a front area to dance if you're into it and the bartenders are really friendly. They played an eclectic mix of music, but it waw all danceable. All in all this is a great local bar and I know I'll be back! read more

Cool dive to grab a few beers and relax. People and staff were friendly and there is a great array of beers to choose. They also didn't mind giving small samples if you have trouble choosing! This place is a diamond in the rough. Anytime you come to Dallas or have someone visiting you MUST STOP HERE. The entire staff is amazing and I can't even put into words how phenomenal their BAR is. THIS PLACE IS CRAFT HEAVEN. They can make all the fancy craft cocktails you could ever ask for and their ENTIRE KEG SELECTION IS ROTATING CONSTANTLY. Definitely a kick-ass, unique beer selection. Wouldn't say it's "the best" as others have when there was not a single lager or pilsner on tap. (A delivery issue was the explanation, but in general the selection is heavy on IPAs and stouts.) Bartender was helpful nonetheless and I ended up trying a solid hefeweizen (not served in a hefe glass tho :/) then switched to an excellent Danish milk stout. We tried this place out because it was listed as one of the best beer bars in America for some beer magazine. The outside looked a little sketchy and we weren't even sure they were open. Is certainly got the duvet bar feel down. But the inside was fantastic! They have 40 beers on tap, most of which I've never even heard of. The bartender was very nice and gave us excellent beer suggestions which were perfect. The food is fantastic and unexpected for a dive bar. The music is good. If you didn't know what you were looking for from the outside you would probably walk right by this place. It looks sketchy from the outside but once you go inside you feel relaxed as this place is not pretenious at all. I walked into this bar and there was dust, darkness, and silence. I thought I was in the wrong place. I turned around to leave and suddenly right in front of me was the owner. He asked me what I was looking for and I said good drink. He said "well, let me show you something." The lights came on and this crazy music started playing. Then I sensed others around me. God help us. The main thing here is that the bar carries a lot of better spirits than what you usually find. Rare stuff on the tap wall too. How does he do it? Wizardry.
