Shelly does a wonderful job of maneuvering between hostess and hall monitor. Stoney's is the quintessential old school jazz club -- like my wife and I went to in NYC or LA. The table near us - it took them 45 minutes to get severed then the server didn't know how to open a bottle of wine. I think I'll stop going there. What an unexpected surprise! Like a lot of reviewers before me, I too have passed this unassuming little spot multiple times when wandering over to the lower Greenville area. but luckily, I happened to buy the Groupon on one of my usual Groupon binges and I'm really happy I did! The inside of the shop is a cute, homey space, with eclectic furniture and a cool and swanky vibe. I got to catch Stoney doing some live Jazz (which I believe he does every weekend) and it does not disappoint! The wine and accompanying plate selections are also great, making this a great place to hang out or a chill date space. Now my favorite thing here is the wine class. I have been to a number of wine pairing classes, and this is one of the top. Stoney has a really easy and amiable way about him which comes off as someone teaching something he is very much passionate about. And he breaks down the skill of wine pairing very well and concretely. In addition, the wines (including a very flavorful port when I did the class) as well as the meats and cheese that make up the class were excellent! Came here yesterday with my gf after a recommendation. I will say this place delivers. For $7 a person on Friday/Saturday, you can enjoy live jazz. The atmosphere is very nice: dim lights, cozy seating. They have a wide variety of wines to choose from. You can get a glass or the entire bottle. They do not offer food but do have some snacks like pies and cheeses. Friday and Saturday night from 8p-10p is when they have live jazz performance. Checking the website calendar can give you an idea of who is playing. The band that played yesterday during my visit was phenomenal and got me hooked. The crowd was mostly 45+ with me and my gf(26 and 23) being the youngest. This is a very good date spot or place to enjoy some time with friends. read more

Came to Stoney's for a wine education class through Groupon. I've passed Stoney's before, but this was my first time stopping by and am so glad I did. Stoney's is an intimate wine bar/lounge with plenty of seating and an AWESOME selection of wine. The wine education class was fun and a great date night! Stoney lead the class and you can really get a sense for his passion and knowledge of wine. The primary focus of the class was pairing wine with food and included 6 wine tastings and a plate of food for pairing. The class was definitely worth the price and would recommend it if Groupon is still offering. I will definitely be back to Stoney's and will probably come back on the weekend when they have live Jazz. read more

Visited for the first time on a random Thursday and very much enjoyed the ambiance, wine and live music. Returned a few weeks later on a Friday, and saw small cards on the tables announcing the $7 per person, per table cover charge for live music. We sat down, the band finished their song and went on break for most of the remainder of the time we were there. We still had to pay $14 in addition to the cost of our wine. Non pretentious and knowledgable staff, relaxing atmosphere, cheese and charcuterie. Was super excited to find a Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir on the list, as well as several other fantastic wines I rarely see elsewhere. A jazz band featuring some of the best musicians in the metroplex was playing when we were there. What a perfect evening. No douche crowd here. Stoney's is small enough that you'll probably miss it if you're not looking for it. However it makes a adequate impression as a cozy and chilled wine bistro. The staff is attentive to your wine experience. They have a nice selection of wine & cheese. I found out there is live music on some evenings and that's a nice element. You will also notice a couple tables out front, which is perfect when the Texas weather isn't 200 degrees in the shade. Parking is available in front and on the side of the building. No valet - woot! This is a tough one to review because I love the idea of this place but the delivery / experience mostly failed.. but here goes... my party of four purchased the Living Social Deal for a wine class and a cheese plate (to add wine was extra $ - legal deal) We called a month or so in advance to make a reservation so I was feeling impressed that they seemed organized about their classes. This all changed when we arrived... We arrived 5 or so minutes early and we were invited to take any seat of our choice. The place is cute - several tables to choose from plus a couch setup. As we sat down I noticed the workers scurrying around to put down wine glasses, napkins and the cheese plate.. Shortly after, Stone checked-in everyone on his guest list. So I am wondering; if they knew who was coming, why didn't they have the tables set? Unorganized. The class begins... Stone has a TON of great knowledge to share but his delivery isn't the best.. at few times he lost control of the room and I found myself thinking about other things while he was talking. Too bad. We tasted 6 wines - 4 white, 2 red. I prefer red wine so was a little disappointed that we didn't get a choice and I just didn't love any of the selections we tasted. Pros: 1.) Stone had a lot of wine knowledge. From food pairing, to the wine process, to the different regions that harvest wine, etc.. 2.) Location is easy to get to 3.) Cozy setup Cons: 1.) The wine pour was inconsistent and a very small amount (perhaps they could add a logo or line on their glasses to prevent that) 2.) Overall it just seemed unorganized 3.) No water offered Misc: 1.) You can find a food truck parked next to his lounge (he mentioned is changes daily) 2.) He offers wine storage (for a fee) in their cellar 3.) Live music on Saturday nights 4.) Wine Classes on Tuesdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 5pm Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this class. Room was full and we were waiting patiently for someone to take our drink order. Eventually, I tried to make eye contact or raise my hand several times with staff and was never acknowledged. So I tried to tap the waitress and she was blowing by and it was more of a paw at her shoulder. I apologized to her for the snafu and she admitted others were having to do the same because they were understaffed. All was said and done but then the manager decided it's her duty to put me in my place and passive aggressively asks our whole table if we were not getting good service. I immediately owned up to the incident and assured her I had already apologized. Then she goes on to berate me again in front of the whole table to say how you don't treat people like that. Good riddance, take some responsibility and hire some help. I didn't get up and walk out because there was actually great music. read more

I had never heard of this place but passed by it when we were walking the dogs yesterday. I was curious and looked it up and saw because of the shelter in place order, they're doing custom boxes of wine with free delivery in the area . Put in an order online last night with a few notes on what kinds of wines we wanted and it was hand delivered by Stoney himself today! 6 wines, good mix of varietals and price points for $75 Definitely will be ordering more from them while we're stuck at home and can't wait to stop in once everything is back to normal. read more

Reading Wayne C's diatribe reminds me of old people whose life frustrations are taken out by writing negative reviews about great places. Stoney's is a little wine bar/lounge that is tucked away in the heart of Lakewood. One might say, blink and you'll miss it. My first visit was on a special night - apparently, the owners brought in their own piano, freshly tuned and restored, and the performer that night was part of a piano trio. The ambiance inside is relaxed, and cozy. It's a very intimate setting for a jazz show. That also translates to: Get there early, or find yourself standing up. Although, the owners go through great pains to try to seat everyone, which was nice. The waitress that night was very attentive, and had a big smile on her face. The music was exquisite, and the wine was quite good. All in all, the experience exceeded my expectations. Note: Cover on weekends is $5.00, and they do close at 11 PM (found that out right at 11 PM when I still had a little wine left in my glass!) read more

Unfortunately our experience at Stoney's was a disappointment. Unless you are a beginner to wine, the Wine Education Class is probably not worth your while. First, we did not realize that a voucher for a Wine Education Class and Cheese Plate for two did NOT include the cost of the wine tasting. When we arrived, we had to pay an additional $9 per person for the 6 very modest tastings that were served. Additionally, the gentleman leading the class had very poor presentation skills; he often trailed off while speaking, spoke in a very low voice, and several times even mysteriously stepped away to a back room in the middle of speaking. The content of his presentation was supposed to be focused on wine and food pairing, yet he did not complement any of the wines to the cheese or apples on our plates and was very vague in his discussion. The presentation was not engaging at all and the entire group seemed largely disinterested. The only redeeming factor about our experience at Stoney's was that the decor and ambiance of the facility was pretty nice. There was also a decent amount of parking in the adjoining lot. read more

I had a Groupon so that made it cheaper but I would have still gone here if I didn't have a voucher with me.(Regular price $9/person) The owner was very accommodating for me and actually scheduled a class for me because I told him Paul H. was only going to be here for a short period of time. (he's visiting from out of town) During the wine tasting, we were able to try about 5 to 6 types of wine. The wine tasting came with a fruit and cheese plate. The owner was very knowledgeable about the wines served (mix of reds and whites)and I would definitely love to come back. Don't think of the wine class as a typical class. This is more like an intimate wine tasting. It's very casual. The tasting lasts about an hour and I think it's a great way to start a date. i highly recommend coming here for a tasting. read more

Not impressed. That was the overall consensus of our group of 4. We used a Living Social voucher for which we paid $19 for a wine education class for 2, including a cheese/fruit/cracker plate. The wine (which cannot legally be discounted via the coupon) was an additional $18/couple. We arrived a few minutes early and were invited to be seated. We never got a tour of the place, although we were told that they have a cellar and wine storage available for rental. There were 2 bookshelves filled with wine bottles (for sale), which I thought was a very cute little set-up. There's a large dining table and then side bench tables along the wall (half bench, half chair type of seating). Our class was about wine and food pairings. I felt that it was disorganized and not well rehearsed. I do think that Stoney had a lot of interesting and new (to me) things to share, but the delivery was bland and cumbersome and he lost control of the room, especially towards the end, which made it difficult to even follow him or realize he was still talking. I felt that it could have been better prepared with pre-set glasses at the tables. There was no water set or even offered either. Given that everyone had reservations, I was frankly shocked that it was better prepped. There were 6 wines offered in the tasting, 4 of which were whites, which I found odd. I felt bad because my husband prefers red and really doesn't like white much. There was no choice of what we would be tasting. They weren't the best wines either. The pours for the tasting were inconsistent and conservative. If they're going to do tastings and offer a small prescribed amount of wine, it should at least be consistent. They could have logos on their glasses or even lines, as most established wineries and wine tasting rooms do. There also was not a rinse bucket in between wines which I found to be a bit gross. The food plate consisted of 3 green apples slices, a small bunch of green grapes, about 10 small slices of mild cheddar cheese and about 6 crackers - 3 different varieties. The wine tastings are offered Tuesdays at 7pm and Saturday at 5pm. They did mention that they have live music on some Saturdays @ 7:30 pm. They do not keep up info on the website but rather via their email list. Overall, it was disappointing. Luckily it did not cost much. I do think that it has potential to be great, but as it stands, you're better off buying a couple of bottles of wine with some friends elsewhere. read more

This is a little hidden gem in Dallas! We went in for a wine & food pairing hosted by Stoney himself. It was awesome. It starts out with about a 5-10 minute introduction about the history of wine and grapes. Then the food plates are brought out. Stoney then explains each wine and pairs in with a food. The entire process was about an hour and 10 minutes. Super informative! The place also has jazz music on certain days and feels like a coffee shop more than a bar. Cute place to catch up with friends or have a low key 21st birthday. read more

A friend of min and I went to Stoney's Wine Lounge for a wine tasting I bought thru Living Social. The place is small, but nice. Stoney is a pretty laid-back guy, with lots of wine knowledge. The only thing I would suggest is that he have some kind of sheet or link to a website to give out so that you actually remember what was discussed. After tasting six different wines, this light-weight couldn't remember the hints and tips he gave us. I did end up buying three bottles of wine that I tasted. Next time we go, we'll stay for the live jazz. Another reviewer said that Stoney's is "Your mother's wine place". That's not so bad, in my opinion. I'm in my 40's and the idea of a loud, obnoxious "party place" no longer really appeals to me, add to that the fact that the "over 40 crowd" are the ones with the $$$ and Stoney may have stumbled onto something, either unintentionally or intentionally! read more

A fun little wine bar - I hope to be back! My girlfriends and I were having lunch and decided we needed drinks after lunch. We turned to our trusty Yelp app to find somewhere we could go at 3:00 on a Saturday and lucked into Stoney's Wine Lounge. We were the only customers in the bar for the 2 hours that we were there. We ordered a bottle of champagne and cheese tray. The man working (maybe the owner, not sure) would stop by every little bit to make sure we were doing ok. However, he basically left us alone to talk. The signs on the wall advertise free jazz in the evenings. It's a cozy atmosphere with comfortable seating and a good wine list at reasonable prices. I hope to go back sometime when there's jazz playing. read more

I went for happy hour. Wine by the glass was half priced, so $4 for a large pour of pretty good cabernet was pretty darn good. I love this laid back little cubby hole. You can have a conversation with someone without shouting and without someone knocking into you and spilling your drink. It is now one of my favorire places to go for wine. read more

WOW!! What an incredible experience our group had at Stoney's last week!! We purchased a Groupon for a wine tasting with another couple and really went in completely blind to the whole thing . . . came out complete experts all thanks to Stoney. The whole evening from start to finish was extremely informative and delicious, including the cheese and fruit trays. Sipping exotic wines from a vast spectrum of places around the world from France, Argentina, California and New Zealand to name a few. Just want to say thank you for educating our group and for spending the time to teach us the basics about wine. . . I now feel confident ordering a bottle (and opening one haha). What world did we step into? After finishing a great dinner at Jack's Kitchen, we saw the neon lights of Stoney's Wine Lounge across the street. We were going to stop in and see what it was all about for a future visit but then saw who we later found out to be Bob Pike setting up a drum set and were told that in 45 minutes a "jazz jam session" would be starting. We're neophytes as far as the appreciating the levels/quality of jazz and intricacies of setup but as the other musicians arrived we felt we were back stage seeing all the preparation and educated talk amongst the music profession - like watching Mozart in the Jungle (show on Amazon Prime) we both commented. Such an inviting and intimate setting. Then there was the buzz that Brian Piper was going to join the ensemble that night and that certainly was worth waiting for as he is well-known internationally and then we even met Steven, a classical pianist that had come to simply hear and enjoy the group and he too explained how special the night was going to be. We met Stoney and Diana (proprietors) - got a bottle of great wine and relaxed on the couch just taking in all the preparation and inside talk. Then John Adams (bass) arrived bringing with him a 25-year old protege (my term) on clarinet - I didn't catch/remember his name, but he was so honored, humbled and appreciative to be in the session for part of the night (more on him later). More and more aficionados of jazz showed up in the audience and the music began. We hadn't expected to stay more than 10 minutes, but nearly 1.5 hours after arriving we were still in awe and smiles frozen in place.... the wait was worth it. The young clarinet/sax player wow'd the whole place by joining for two songs, and then the group continued to play joined later by vocals. I can't vouch for the education classes on groupon/living social, but for the night it was beyond anything we imagined and we have since gone on-line to track Brian, Bob and John to see where they're going to be or when they're coming back to Stoney's and we'll certainly be back, but tough to top the first impression. read more

Visited Stoney's Friday nite for a birthday celebration with friends/family. Visit had a two fold purpose - first the birthday of my nephew and second the hear a really good jazz band. Stoney's was at capacity with our group (12 strong) comprising most of the clientele. The waitstaff was initial overwhelmed since the place filled to capacity quickly, but they were gracious, eager, and eventually got everyone served. The sampling portions are small but well presented and the wines quite tasty. Overall an enjoyable experience. Tip: you are allowed to bring in your own food if you wish (our group host found a pizzeria close by that would deliver - but only to the outside for some reason) - bringing in you own food is a bit unique, but added to the festivity of the evening. read more

Stoney's is so good on so many levels. I enjoy wine but am not a student of the vine. I need a friend who knows what's good and won't make fun of me for being such a poser. Stoney is not pretentious about wine and he shares his expertise like a neighbor handing you a glass at a casual backyard soiree. Every wine Stoney has ever recommended to me has been a hit with the family and friends who shared it, and I have rarely experienced the affordability of quality that one gets at Stoney's. Finally, Stoney's has become a beacon of live music, trending toward jazz, but always interesting, no matter the genre. I have to say that I was disappointed with our experience. The jazz was great, but there was a $7 cover charge PLUS a $10 minimum food/wine purchase per person. The wait staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. There were four in our party, but our server only took the order for our friends. I had to chase her down and giver her our order.
