My favorite new spot to drink, I'm a beer snob and this is a beer snob's dream. While they don't lack in quantity, the quality of the brew on tap and in bottles in one of the best in the metro. I never leave disappointed in the selection, always something new on tap to try out. I'm a fan of Flying Saucier and the Moth too, but Strangeways always has oddball stuff you'll never find at those places. The music is right up my bandwagon as well, can't go wrong with Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, and the like. Go on weekend when the DJ is playing, probably here some great tunes you hadn't heard since college (if you're my age). Easy to find, easy parking across the street, and a front porch to hang out on if the weather is right. I really need to try the food, we usually eat before we go so hadn't tried that yet. read more

You've probably driven by and never noticed it. It's just an unassuming brick building in an unassuming part of Old East Dallas with a dimly lit spray painted sign. But step inside and find a craft beer stronghold. Rivaled only by Craft & Growler, Strangeways boasts the most eclectic, diverse, and adventurous beer selection in the city. There's always something casked, always something new to sample, and always a good mix of people on hand. One of the few places I can regularly expect to find Jester King and Prairie Artisan Ales being poured. Haven't gone too deep into the menu but what I tried was very tasty. The vibe is just right for me. The music sets a cool tone and the raw interior is lit just well enough to still feel inviting. The collection of designer vinyl toys are a whimsical touch to an otherwise rugged space. One of the bartenders can be gruff and these specialty beers aren't cheap, which is why I usually go on Monday to avoid both ($5 drafts and he's not working). read more

Give me your dark, slightly damp, cement floor bar with tons of taps full of the best selection of brews (okay, granted I can't drink any but a few sips of my BF's) and a full bar and I'm back in Bushwick. And I'm loving it. The outdoor seating is nice too but we prefer to hide from the daylight and be closer to the action (aka the taps). We can also enjoy sitting inside since you guys play music at a respectable level that still allows for conversations in our normal voices. I perused through some of the other reviews and I don't agree with a lot of the rants. Came here two weeks ago (been a few times prior as well!) with some not-so-well versed beer drinkers and had great service and they got us quite a few samples before they made decisions. I partake in the titos n sodas and they are strong and tasty as usual. We've had some of the homemade food and it was enjoyable. Strangeways has the best beer selection of any bar I've ever been to. They get the smallest batch kegs in town, and have a great bottle selection too. The food is also great. Service isn't as attentive as it could be, but that just adds to the charm of feeling like you're among friends. read more

I think I understand where some of the other reviewers are coming from when they complain about the service here, although I had really good service from one of the tenders (bartender A), the other (bartender B) was kinda rude when I asked a simple question. Bartender A: caucasian gentleman Bartender B: chubby hispanic dude Bartender A is the kind of service I'd expect and totally deal with from this type of place, short and not a babysitter but not really rude at all. Bartender B, however, gave me a very unhelpful answer to a simple question. I drink mostly local Texas beers, and a ton of the beers on their board seemed to be from out of state. I had just had a very dark beer which was quite good but wanted to try something a bit lighter/more refreshing. So I asked (paraphrasing but this was very close to the original wording): "Can you recommend me a Pilsner or a Golden, something lighter?" A pretty straightforward question, and I got some smart-ass remark about how a "Pilsners a pilsner, man." That might sound like small potatoes and it is, but if a customer asks something as simple as "recommend me a lighter beer" you'd think it would be easy enough to just do that, especially when you are playing $6-9 a beer before tip. That being said, the atmosphere is great and the food seemed to be priced reasonably relative to the beer prices, and tasty. The beer selection is excellent and the crowd seemed not at all douchey. It was easy enough to shrug off a rude comment from a bartender, but I could see how some people would be put off by that kind of thing. read more

I keep recommending Strangeways to people in person, so I figured I should go ahead and write a review. Strangeways, unassuming as it is, is known for its beer selection. The taps change fairly often, and there are always at least 20 beers I haven't heard of available for purchase. The variety is exciting. The atmosphere is very low-key: dim, casual, walls full of trinkets - somebody there has a serious affection for action figures and The Smiths. I'm not going to try to go any deeper into these things, because I don't know enough to have a conversation. I like to go here to find new beers to try, but they also have good food. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and a funky mix of music is always playing. I would appreciate a lower price tag, but I go back for the novelty of things. This bar sits in a bit of a more quiet "ghetto" locale than the Henderson street bars, and when it comes to the food, the tamales and elote con chile are great, the rest is about average compared to its knox/henderson counterparts. But, what makes this place great? The beer selection. I have been to most craft beer bars in Dallas, and this place takes the gold medal. Sure there's meddlesome moth, flying saucer, old monk, etc... but this place offers the most diverse and unique blend of beers you will find in Dallas. I have been dumbfounded by some of the rare beers they've been able to get their hands on, beer that you would never find at places like the above mentioned bars. The staff is friendly and super chill. The building and art is interesting with its own certain charm. And they have good TVs. If you're a fan of craft beers, check this place out. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting from Los Angeles and I'm always shocked when I see more hipsters in Dallas than I do at home. Regardless of the scene, this place has a great beer selection! We both got a flight and the bartender was really helpful in helping us choose. There were a few people out on the patio, but we were the only people inside on a Saturday afternoon, so we had great service. I was really surprised by the food menu here as well. It was a small selection, but I had the Elote and my boyfriend had the caprese stack and both were REALLY good. The boyfriend is a fan of Sour Beer, so he was in heaven with their selection here. Hands down my favorite hole in the wall to drink with my friends. This bar is in my neighborhood so I just walk over but parking never seems to be a problem for my friends (there is ample parking across the street at the meat market). I've never had a problem grabbing a table on the patio with girlfriends or holing up at the bar with my boyfriend. Beer selection is AMAZING and of course, they have a full bar so if beer isnt your thing sit back and grab a $3 Vodka soda. Food is pretty awesome as well.... my favorite? HANDMADE POTATO CHIPS. They come out warm sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, fresh basil and truffle oil. I'm drooling just thinking about it. So go and support this great local bar. Dallas need more like it!! read more

The beer selection is diverse, large for Texas, and very delicious! If you are looking to explore new beers or find some hard to find favorites, check this place out. My experience was a slow night and the bar tender turned out to be the owner. He is passionate about solid drinks and experiencing the qualities and complexities of each drink! He is very knowledgeable and cares about excellent drinks. The liquour selection is even good. A few wiskies I have never heard of. This is a preliminary review because I think they need just a little more time to get their legs under them. Dark windowless bar which, if the AC is good, I will really like next summer. Bare brick interior and a nice sized bar. Rosie is super nice although I think the bar might be a little to tall for her. :) There is an outdoor patio but scenery of run down laundromats & shady convenience stores can be a little intimidating to those with delicate sensibilities. Maybe when more of the neighborhood gets re-done it will be more appealing. The little toys (maybe psuedo asian hello kitty style) were entertaining to look at. My martini was fine, nothing super special and my friend's watermelon drink was just ok. She had it cut with some sprite or something. Next time I'll probably order off the extensive beer selection. The only thing that bugged me is there are no TVs. When I'm done listening to you or if I have nothing more to say to you I want to be able to glance at a TV. I think I saw wiring for it so I bet its coming so that's not a deal breaker right now. I think it will only get better & I foresee a stumble-y beaten path going from Strangeways to Redfork to home. read more

I rarely make it down Fitzhugh anymore, but I stumbled my way to Strangeways on Tuesday night this week. Though the place was pretty empty when I got there, I felt that I got enough of an experience to garner a Yelp review. First off, though they do not have a large tap list comparable to say World of Beer, what they do have are often local and mostly fantastic. The bar is also dim enough to enjoy your beer quietly while listening to whatever track by The Knife or Crystal Castles plays around you. The only real downside is the parking or lack thereof. However, that does seem to be a trend in most Fitzhugh establishments. However, the discerning hipster within you should love it here. NOTE: This review is for drinks only. read more

This is a great space and they always have great beers on tap. The bartenders are attentive and they always have good suggestions to try. You can sit inside in a big open room or outside on the patio with picnic tables. I dont usually go for food but it's been good the couple times I've ordered an appetizer. Make sure to go to their day of the dead party! Only reason I didn't give Strangeways the fifth star is because sometimes I feel like their drinks are overpriced. BEST neighborhood bar yet! Stopped in last night with a friend that insisted on bringing me there. AMAZING!! The bar owner is very down to earth. He was working bar back along with his employees. He loves to bring a very diverse beer selection to his clientele. Also has an amazing selection of whiskey and tequila. We did not eat there yet, but the menu was simple and elegant. i'm looking forward to driving from north Carrollton just to hit this amazing bar. If you live close to it consider yourself lucky!. What's the point of so many beers on tap if you're gonna drink them in a nasty old building overlooking a nasty old street? This place has very little going for it other than the selection of beers. Outside, the patio fronts a view of La Michoacana and hot, oily pavement. There is no shade. Inside is a weird combination of bare brick with someone's toy collection on display. It feels like a dungeon with toys. Or maybe it's what a dog feels like when it has to be in a kennel all day. Behind the bar is a big dude and a girl. Hard to get anything but glares from them. Smiles and friendly attitudes must cost extra. I know this is a beer place, but could the mixed drinks be served with any less care? What's up with ice cubes so tiny they could pass for slush? They water down any mixed drink way too fast. The food was only so-so. The hominy was cold and stale, and the elote obviously came from canned corn, not fresh, hot off the grill corn. I guess I'll have to walk across to Michoacana for that. I can't tell if this place tries too hard or doesn't try hard enough. Either way, I'm gonna try to go somewhere else. read more

Weirdest customer service experience ever... I ordered a beer and the line tasted stale and clogged... I had one sip of the beer and had my girlfriend have another. Two sips down. After agreeing that the beer tasted like a horses foot I asked the lovely waitress if we could exchange it. She obliged and asked what for... I exchanged the skunked beer for something not rotten and on we went... However! When i got the bill I was charged for the crappy beer that was thrown away AND the new non-crappy replacement! WHAT?! If you try on a pair of shoes that don't fit and then try on another... you aren't charged for both... Why? Because that's idiotic. As is this place. You're sure to be greeted with a "ugh" instead of a "Hi"... if "Paddy's Pub" from FX could have a real live bar... this would be it. ____________ Ladies and gentleman, the comment below is indicative of the service you'll receive. Holy sh*t with the crazy owner comments on poor reviews. We popped in here after a company event and drinks at Lark. The guys wanted something laid back and one of them had been here before. Me and the fiance arrived first and I hobbled my way to the bar with my broken leg. Hardly anyone is sitting at the bar and we plop down. The bartender proceeds to ignore me (and fiance) and after a few minutes, asks the dude standing in a group behind me what he wants. Nice little eff you. Okay. Not a good first impression. I did eventually get drinks and just migrated to the patio. The set up is nice, the patio has ample seating, the booze selection is great. BUT if you're gonna ignore customers and be rude, I'm going to go somewhere else. read more

This place has the most amazing tap wall. I'm always so impressed with the options when I come here. The problem is, the bartenders are so rude and demeaning that I hardly ever want to come here, even though I live across the street. It's sad really. I love beer and love the beer selection so much but am so tired of being treated so poorly that I only come here when I have no other choice. Hopefully someday the owner will realize that the bane of his business is the staff behind that bar. They can't be bothered to discuss a beer or give a taster or tolerate questions. Eric- I felt strongly enough about the experience to make my first review about that bar. That's how bad it was. And honestly- your response only makes it worse. This is something we are bringing to the BBB because it made a few people sick. The only place we were all together was the bar. Aside from that, you lost loyal customers. And I'll be telling everyone else I know who enjoy craft beer to avoid it. I've never had such awful customer service or response as a customer. And I'm sure the breweries that distribute their beers to you would be pretty unhappy you're tainting their beer and making their art taste and smell so bad.
