I've been coming here since the early 2000s, and nothing has changed--the same old place, and the owner still has a way of sucking the air out of the room. I think his name is Rob. There's one lady who's been there forever, though, and she's incredibly sweet, with blonde hair. The rest of the staff is friendly as well. Cream cheese is amazing but bagels use to be good. This owner believes his store is on 5th Avenue with the prices he charges. A roll with eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, and avocado with a cup of coffee $18?! for a couple dollars more, I will go to a diner where the service is brought to my table and get free coffee refills. I love this Strathmore, friendly staff, delicious bagels, love that you get delicious potatoes with the egg sandwich. I came here a couple weeks ago with my 1 year old son, it was busy but I was craving a BEC and didnt mind waiting a few minutes on line. Since it was a little busy we were there for about 7-10 minutes. Seeing my son was getting a little antsy, the owner gave him a rainbow bagel to munch on as we wait. Solid bagel joint. Line moved a bit slow this morning but the staff on hand did as well as they could. Give them credit and happy to see they are doing well as their bagels are worth it. Soft inside, just right crisp on the outside, and a good sized bagel. Sesame and everything bagels totally covered which I love. They don't skimp on the ingredients here. The owner of this bagel shop is the most disrespectful arrogant person that I have ever met. I give it 3 starts for offering no gluten kneaded bagels, they are amazing and love they support another local business. Where I take issue is that they like to close early on Sundays. We have tried on 2 of occasions to run in a get a quick bagel 10 minutes before closing and they shouted both times that they were closed. Ok, I get it, no one likes for people to come right before closing but you say you close at 2. Close at 2 or advertise you have to be there by 1:45. So this time when we attempted to come at 1:35 we walked in and we were told that the grill was already off. Again, I get it, Sunday isa busy day and you are probably over it, but again, not the best business practice. I will say that everyone is alway nice when they share this info.. Update: I updated the review and gave the 2 stars back. I appreciate the owner explaining the situation. I don't usually post bad reviews, I own several businesses across Long Island, and I believe in giving a buisness a chance to do the right thing before posting, but also make it easy for customers to reach the owner. Since they don't have a website or answer Facebook. I'm leaving it on here. Purchased bagels, have no problem with service and bagels thought they where great. My only problem is the law that was broken charging a convenience fee. I didn't by a $1.29 drink and got charged I purchased $13.00 worth of food. And got charged a fee for using my debit card and I didn't even get told that I'm going to be charged for it. Charging someone to purchase something at there buisness is pretty stupid if you ask me. It's going to cost them more because my $14 a week that I'm spending will now go somewhere else. If I would have been told that they charge a fee, I would have walked out and they would have lost a sale. Pretty shady if you ask me, Definitely won't be back. My friend and I ordered an egg bagel and a poppy seed bagel, both of which were far less dense than what a real bagel should be, a sure indication a proper boiler is nowhere in sight. Baked hard roll anyone? But the cream cheese selection is quite good, cleverly disguising the forgery underneath a mountain of flavor (at least they can't be accused of being cheap on the toppings). The garlic/herb spread was excellent, as was the ever-so-rare vanilla/raisin/walnut (warning: it contains sugar). As others have said... decent sandwiches, kinda annoying they force the whole meal on you and don't really tell you that when you think you're ordering a basic bec, I was excited to get a coffe with my sandwich then they rang me up... almost ten bucks, yeah you get home fries too...but that's not what I asked for, they should offer the mean instead of just ringing you up for it, some people aren't thaaat hungry and just want a sandwich. As for the bagels.... stonybrook is sooo much better, the ones at this location are always well done and dried out bc of it, I recommend getting it toasted with butter to enjoy it bc by itself it's very dry and overdone, it doesn't taste right with cream cheese. I go here for the convenience but there's better places, it's a shame bc the other locations are great but this one only seems to share the name and price point (pricey AF), the bagels are the same flavors but completely different in look and taste.
