I feel amazing after getting my haircut, it's really hard to find quality curl hair stylist. Capri is a kind and polite lady who is fantastically savvy with hair. As some of you may know, Visions salon in Hayward f**ked me over (didn't see that vision coming), and for months I've been in limbo repairing my hair. So over it. My friend suggested I see Rachel (and my friend's hair is always laid) so I made an appointment and came on in. Rachel is so nice, professional and talented. She confirms everything via text, so there's no shadiness once you get there and no flip flopping on the price. I'm so happy with my sew-in. I had someone put in a weave with kind of last minute notice which I was thankful for, But I had a situation with my base braids where it just didn't lay flat. I had my engagement photos coming up in 3 days. I was in a panic because when I straitened my hair there were really big bumps on top of my head. This just didn't look right. It looked good when is was wavy and full of volume because it would hid the bumps. So I decided that I needed some adjusting. I searched countless places . So I decided to stop by. The moment I stepped in the door I was greeted with nothing but kindness and smiles. I waited for about a couple of minutes while the receptionist talked to Capri of my current hair situation. Brought the little man in to get cleaned up the day before picture day, and it was PACKED! My bad for waiting until the day before Valentine's Day! The usual spots that I take my son to were busy, so I opted for Strictly Styles Barber Shop since they are the closest to our home, and because of their awesome business hours. It's damn near impossible to find barber shops who stay open late! We arrived at 6:30, and my son did not get out of the chair until 8:30. His barber was nice, and did an ok job. It wasn't the worst cut my son has ever had, but I wouldn't come in again without an appointment, lots of free time on my hands, and patience. I feel partially to blame for not communicating that I wanted my son's hair a bit shorter but it had been two hours and we were both tired and hungry. Lesson learned! The barbers here did good work. I saw a lot of great cuts coming out of this place. I just wasn't crazy about our experience. I'm not totally writing this place off. The business hours are a blessing to busy moms! read more

I have found my forever salon! I went back in December and had a virgin relaxer done by Rachel. She did a great job. My hair has tight and unruly coils and was damaged from mistreatment. She cut the dead ends off and gave me a beautiful head of hair. I needed to book a touch up and Rachel was not available. I booked with Capri instead. I didn't think it would be quick, but it was quick and wonderful! I had 3 inches of really wavy growth and she took care of me in less than two hours! Given the good reviews, I was truly disappointed. I'm sure they are great with straight and loose curls hair types, but when it comes to kinkier textures they do not do so well. I was not impressed by the cornrows Fiyore did to my daughter & she pulled her hair so hard. For one week her hair was painful & her scalp developed blisters! She also dumped the remaining braiding hair scattered in a plastic bag after cutting them unproportional what a waste! I would not recommend her to anyone with a sensitive scalp. My daughter said she was on her phone 95% of the time she was braiding & didn't listen to her pleas that she was pulling her hair hard. It was our first time in the salon. This is an update to my last review. Recently I came back from getting my hair done at the salon and was LIVID! I wrote how Tenae was a good hair dresser but the experience was dampened by attitude issues. Well Friday that was HIGHLY confirmed. Since 5 years now I have my hair permed by one person and the cut (I have short hair) from someone else. I moved to San Jose and had a hard time finding a stylist who was on time and was reasonably priced. I finally found Stricly Styles. I went to Tenae and immediately she asked if she could trim my hair because it was badly in need of it. I said thanks for letting me know but no thank you. I tried to be as kind as possible because I know that some hair dressers dont like you going to other people for other services. Since then she has always made snide comments to me about it. I vowed that I would find someone else soon. But in the meantime, she was a good stylist and on time, etc. I could handle under-the-breath comments. Friday, after she washed the perm out, I saw a lady in the shop whose hair was quite cute and cut similarly (not the same) as mine and I asked if she could curl my hair similar to hers but have tighter curls? (She was always giving me a stink about not letting her "do what she would do with my hair" and how she would give me a "flip"). Boy - what did I say that for? She slammed the dryer head down and pointed to me in the face and said....You don't have that type of cut to do that - you have a WHITE GIRL hair cut! If you let ME do your hair, you have have a BLACK GIRL hair cut! WHAT? AND I AM PAYING THIS LADY TO DO MY HAIR...AND INSULT ME? OH HELL NO. NOT ANYMORE. Disclaimer: There are other ladies in the shop who seem to do excellent jobs on their clients. I don't know about their prices, attitudes, etc but their clients leave with super cute dos. I love Capri. I've been going to her for years!! I actually use to live in San Jose while I attended San Jose State. Although, I moved to Oakland I still commute down to San Jose to get my hair done. It is well worth the drive. Capri and her assistant Joyce are a perfect team. Capri uses the best products for African American hair Kera Kare, Mizani, Affirm, Designer Touch & others. Pros- She doesn't overcharge. She doesn't add a lot of heat to your hair and burn it out. She doesn't overbook her clients therefore you don't have to wait hours. She has a very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly attitude. Most importantly she doesn't cut your hair off when you just need a trim!!!! I have referred a ton of people to her. Most of them still come outside the area to get their hair done. Capri takes late appointments. Cons- she doesn't do hair on Saturdays or Sundays anymore :( read more

However, both stylists I've seen here (Adonica and Capri) have been really rough on my hair and I haven't been satisfied with the outcome. I wanted to get my hair straightened for New Years Eve. I haven't had a regular hair stylist since I stopped relaxing my hair in 2005. My ends were also in need of a trim and some shaping. After reading reviews on Yelp (note: there are a lot of useful reviews that are filtered out, check the bottom of the page) and reviewing their very detailed price list online I decided to give Strictly Styles a try. I made an appointment for Thursday morning with Tasha. Tasha was a little taken aback by the thickness of my hair. She assured me she could get it relaxer straight and she did. It took a blow out, press, and flat iron to do it but it was silky straight. Like Dark and Lovely box model, swinging, and swaying straight. I was impressed Tasha definitely has skills. Truthfully, it's probably more heat that I'd like to expose my hair to on a regular basis. But for a special occasion I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. The whole service took two hours. Tasha worked on my head pretty much the whole time. With a few pauses for deep conditioning etc. In other shops, stylists end up working on two or three clients at a time. That ends up driving total appointment times up. I didn't see any of that at Strictly Styles. One client, one stylist. Maybe my hair salon hiatus is coming to an end... read more

I called the shop for a same day appt and I made an appt with D'mara for a little later that day. I got there at 2:30, I was in her chair by 2:40 (which is HUGE if you're used to black salons). For that alone I would have given them at least 3 stars, especially since I called for a same day appt and was still in the chair within 10 mins of my appt time. D'mara gave a GREAT wash-sometimes people don't really wash your hair well enough. I was in and out of the shop within 2 hours. She asked me how I wore my hair and gave me a nice flat iron. After leaving, I realized I would have like my ends curled a little more-but when she asked me what I wanted, I told her I only wanted it bumped a little at the ends, so that was my fault. I was afraid the prices were going to be ridiculous because it's San Jose, but they were the same as the shop I go to in Oakland. The reason they get 5 stars instead of 4 is because not EVERYONE accepts credit cards. I was under the impression that everyone at the shop accepted them. Hip shop (read: hip-NOT ghetto), nice stylists, and they understand that you DONT want to be in the shop all day just to get your hair done! I'll be coming back when I'm in the area. read more

I must say that when I relocated to Palo Alto I had difficulty finding a stylist who understood me and could work with my hair. Then Tanesha C. and Strictly Styles came into my life and viola! I am transformed! I loved Tanesha from the first time I spoke with her on the phone. I had tried 3 different salons before I found her. Every time I called a salon and told them I wanted to a blowout they informed me they could do it. WRONG! Liars all liars. Over the phone, Tanesha informed me that my Chicago style blow out was not a method used in California. I was disappointed, however she assured me that she could give me a nice sleek, straight style. And boy did she deliver. Tanesha is an excellent stylist. She is knowledgeable about hair, very funny and super sweet. She taught me how to wrap my hair, and techniques to get my hair in great shape. I hugged her after my first appointment because I was so happy. :) I have made ongoing appointments with her and I can't be more pleasured. Strictly Styles is easily located in San Jose off of The Alameda (I-280, use the Julian St Exit and take a right). Clean salon, nice atmosphere and cheery stylist. You can't go wrong with this place. It's the perfect salon for black women on the peninsula. I live in Palo Alto and it only takes me 15-20 mins to get there. read more

After finally making up my mind over many weeks, I decided it was time for another big chop (to the uninitiated/our multicultural neighbors out there: a "big chop" is when a Black/African-American woman decides to cut off all of her chemically treated hair and wear her natural texture, referred to as "going natural"). I did not realize that the salon had moved and changed names. Thanks to fellow yelpers, I found out that this was the place that used to be Multicultural Heritage (formerly known as "Black Hairitage"). Brian did my first-ever bc (shorthand for "big chop") years ago and the results were fantastic. Amazingly, he was available tonight and did it again for me. Same results - he took his time and it shows. I am sooo happy to have my short hair back!! Plus, it wasn't even expensive. If you're considering your own bc, definitely give Brian a try. read more

I've been trying to find a new place to get my hair straightened and after looking at the reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this place a chance. Well, that and my hair was becoming unmanageable, lol. When I called on a Thursday, I knew that there was a very slim chance I'd be able to get an appointment on Saturday. However, Tanisha (sorry if I misspelled it) was able to book me for 10am and Saturday! I got there and since there was no receptionist, I had to catch the attention of one of the hairdressers who let Tanisha know I was there. She was really great with my hair (she even suggested a sensitive skin relaxer for next time-something no other hairdresser has offered). She didn't talk to me much, mainly the other women that seemed to be regulars. I kind of miss the chitchat of my old hairdresser. But the end result was amazing. My hair was straight and lovely and completed in an hour and a half! And the price was only $70! The guy butchered my hair and cut it too short after I told him exactly what I wanted and he said he knew exactly what I meant. my hair has giant chops in it and is not blended at all so I just look stupid now, and I have to wait till it grows out to even get it cut again. its the worst. My favorite part (sarcastically) is that the guy offered me a beer and talked to me the whole time so he thinks he has a customer for life, but he's dead wrong. He swiveled me around in the chair so he could just watch the football game. Then our conversation was him just not paying attention to me or my hair and just watching football. then he would just say something barely related to what i just said, but not really. seriously awful and cannot do mens hair if it is anything besides a fade (I guess, but i bet they would screw that up too). They are exactly what you don't want. just guys who pretend to talk "bro" to you and don't pay attention at all while they butcher your hair short enough so you cant even get it fixed for weeks without it looking worse (although i'm not sure that's possible.) While contemplating what to do with the pack of hair I bought for prom at a beauty shop in Eastridge mall, a woman named D'Mara approached me with a business card. She told me that she works here and that she could do my weave job. I was excited and immediately booked an appointment. I showed up 30 minutes before my cutting work to get my hair done when she told me that she was unable to go through with our appointment because a client before me was surprisingly taking longer than expected. I was very bummed but rescheduled. Her schedule was pretty was a little inconvenient because I had school and had to skip school to fulfill the new appointment. She charged $25 per track of weave. I have no idea whether it's too much or not, so it's up for you to decide. She also said it would be $10 to get them tightened. It took me a good two hours to get three tracks done, which i didn't think was enough but crunched by time, i had to leave. Over-all my experience here was ok. I would go back just because i've befriended the hair stylist but if i found a better and maybe cheaper place, i'd definitely give that place a try also. read more

Just finished my hair appointment with Claudia and I couldn't be happier. Finally, I've found a beauty shop that I actually like in the South Bay. I was on the verge of giving up on Bay Area stylists, but Claudia has renewed my faith. Why the 5-star rating? Timing: She had me in about out of my appointment in under 2 hours. Always a plus in my book if it didn't take the whole day to get my hair laid. I called a day before my requested appointment date and was able to get in early the next day, which I also appreciated. Appearance: The place is kept clean and each stylist at their station was relatively pleasant. The babershop is also separate from the beauty shop, which I appreciated. I noticed credit card and Square stickers on the windows, so it looks like they accept credit cards as payment, but just in case there is an ATM machine within the shop to get cash. However, be warned it charges $3 per transaction. Location: Right on the Alameda and easy to find. It's a block away from my favorite coffee shop Crema. Be aware that they only offer street parking, which has a 2 hour time limit. Trust me the meter lady, will come by and get you! Overall, I enjoyed my experience and will be book an appointment with Claudia again. read more
