There aren't that many stromboli options here in Rochester, but this one is solid. Whenever I'm in this area, I definitely choose a calzone over a pizza. Something satisfying about being able to eat a pocket that oozes filling over a pie. Their stromboli definitely needs to be dipped in their home sauces to get that flavor going. do not eat a stromboli straight without dipping in their sauce. Their service is pretty fast. I like their chicken and broccoli option dipped in their meat sauce. Their meat options tend to be saltier and heavy, so I wouldn't get that unless you can handle heavier salts/oil on your calzone. The veggie ones are definitely a safe option especially once you add that tomatoey meat sauce. This place has an open mic/live music area so this is a casual eatery with nice couches/tables to sit at. I can't attest to the actual service but the front desk people are fast to take your order and the dishes come out relatively fast/hot. read more

Greetings! We went to Strombolis for lunch and decided to go all out and order a lot. We started with the Jalapeño Poppers and they were good. However, they separated a lot when we took a bite, and would've loved more cheese coming out. Salad was simple and we got ranch and caesar as the dressings and the ranch wasn't very good. However, the bread was very delicious, a classic white bread with delicious butter. The eggplant parm was yummy with generous amount of spaghetti with meat sauce! Deliciously unique and fun experience on my "Pizza Tour"! I suggest calling and asking what the specialty of the day is! This is a fun and creative establishment that will have many off menu items if you ask for a suggestion! I asked for a recommendation and received a chicken parm "on a wedge", which is like a wrap made from pizza dough. Delicious! I was welcomed into a casual relaxing pizzeria atmosphere where you can order by the slice, I was told they add the ingredients to a plain slice and then heat it up again. That makes for a very fresh slice which I love. Note: the "display slices" resemble to NYC style and ordering a pie out will be more upstate NY style. I got takeout here and it was pretty darn good! The minis are quite large which I was happy about. We got chicken, pepperoni, and bacon bolis, and one of the chick'n broccoli vegan ones. They were all great. Only note was that the broccoli wasn't seasoned well so could have been a bit more flavorful. Additionally, I'll skip the cinnamon sticks next time as they weren't very good. We decided to hit a close place to the hotel. My wife wanted Spaghetti and she said it was good. The salad that came with it was a nice salad. I got a Stromboli and the way they cut it is great. It's not to often you find a place that takes as much care in slicing Stromboli's. It was definitely one of the better Stromboli's I have ever had. We also got a small 4" sandwich. Oh my gosh. From the pictures on Google maps, it seemed like they weren't that great. But the food here is amazing. Althought my first impression was that they wouldn't be that great for a small establishment, I was pleasantly blown away! Their ambience is unique, the musician was just packing up as we were coming in, they have an interesting jazz theme going on, so I think they have live music often. They have a bar, comfy couch seating, as well as tables and chairs. It's a pretty relaxed environment. I was surprised to see a vegan menu at the front of their counter. The staff was really friendly, and I'm not sure if the sign outside their store front is accurate, but it seemed like a really chill place to hang put, eat good food, and listen to live music. They are pretty affordable and the quality and presentation of their food is amazing. I ordered the vegan grilled cheese, the cashier me that the cheese is created by a local vegan cheese maker. My friends ordered a stromboli and pasta. The grilled cheese was really flavorful and melty. The cheese wasn't stringy like normal cheese, and it was kind of messy to eat, but really good! My friend said it was the best stromboli he's ever had, and the pasta was good. We went here for dinner, but the day after my friends also went here for lunch because the food was just so good, and affordable. This is a great cafe near Eastman School of Music, featuring a solid vegan menu - I had the vegan chick'n fajita pizza on gluten free crust and it was really good and creative. They have some bottled beers and other drinks too, and some beers on tap. It's got a good vibe and I recommend it as a solid food stop in the area, particularly on weekend mornings when not much else is open downtown. I just picked up a "small" stromboli for lunch. $13 gets you a monstrous foot-long "small" stromboli. Only in America, is something this humongous considered small. I can't even imagine the bigger sizes, but apparently they do have a "mini" version that is intended for one person that is 3" x 9" for $8. I'm definitely not a stromboli connoisseur, but I've had my fair share of late night (and post-alcohol) stromboli. This was a solid stromboli. It was flavorful without being too salty and also quite generous with the meat filling. The breading was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the stromboli. It's no frills, but it checks all the boxes and will satisfy any late night (or daytime) craving. The portions are huge and prices are fair. If Boli was a guitar, then you might "Strumboli." Whereas if Boli was the name of a guy who competed it fitness competitions, then he would be "Strongboli." And if he was a drug addict then it would be "Strungooutboli." As it happens, it's just a solid downtown pizza place. What to get: A slice for around $3. What else: Drugs are bad, m'kay. I visited Stromboli on a weekend, which is actually bizarre if you think about it, because it's the kind of place that is packed at weekday lunchtimes and then dead on the weekends. And so it was. Nice and quiet. The server was really friendly to me, not so much to the other customers but they were giving her a bit of a hard time. The pizza itself was huge, greasy, filling, and decidedly average. Compared to Pizza Stop down the road it did nothing for me, but on its own merit, it was fine. It wasn't dry... that I did appreciate. It was one of those large foldy-overy NY-style slices which seem to be a lot more common in Rochester than Buffalo. The pepperoni was added before reheating. It was the large deli-kind, so it wasn't well done pepperoni, just lightly warmed pepperoni on hot greasy pizza. You might end up absolutely loving this pizza, so give it a try if it sounds like your thing. Just don't do drugs, people. read more

Strombolis is THE best pizza parlor in the east end. Hands down. Everyone here is friendly. It's popular with the local college - Eastman/UR- crowd. The food is amazing and the ambience is cool, casual, cultured and comfortable. The owner loves music. Jazz is his favorite and it shows! The wallpaper alternates between a montage of jazz greats like Ellington, Davis, and Fitzgerald and there are several large pieces of art on the walls. The soundtrack is 105.9 North Coast Radio, our local jazz station. It's even used as a venue for small combos during our acclaimed Jazz Festival in the summers. Now for the food - amazing! They're known for their bolis which are kinda like stuffed breads or rectangular calzones minus the ricotta. Anything you can put on a pizza you can put in these bolis. A crowd favorite is the Tim's Special with spinach, bacon, mushrooms, ricotta and mozz. My favorite is the chicken club - all white meat chicken, cheddar, mozz, bacon and tomatoes - YUM! They recently got a liquor license and have 4 beers on tap and a wine list! This place has come a long way since I was a kid and I hope my kid enjoys it here someday. read more

One of the fads in restaurants recently has been fusion. Stromboli's is fusion of a different kind, blending good, Italian food with jazz. What else could you expect in a college town except places that cater to the collegiate crowd? Stromboli's does, but it also caters to the non-collegiate crowd, even old farts like me. (Private note to old farts, it helps if you like great jazz!) It's a simple place, and before you walk in the door, you realize this is an artsy and music type place - the laser cut G-clef on the door pretty much gives that away. Wallpaper is a score. Seating is simple with stylish, yet utilitarian tables. Two tables stand on sculpted instruments, a guitar and a saxophone. There's also an overstuffed couch and easy chair with a cocktail table, if that's your preference. Sidwalk seating wasn't attractive tonight as the cool spring evening air wasn't condusive to al fresco dining, but feel free as the temperature rises. The menu is simple, a tri-fold laid flat and laminated to protect it from marinara and other potential disasters. You'll find a full array of sandwiches, appetizers, pizza, calzones and a specilaty called a Boli. Boli's defy description, think pizza only rolled into a long pastry-like concoction. (There are several supporting photos here.) They come in mini, small, medium and large depending on if you're feeding yourself, you and a friend or you and a bus load of friends. A Boli is cut into finger-size slices so you can dip each piece into the supplied maranara sauce (which tastes like it's homemade). They come filled with several standard pizza combinations, a few more eclectic fillings or you can create your own. I opted for the Hawaiian Boli, ham, pineapple and Mozzarella (which is a basic ingredient in all Bolis) and I enjoyed it. My dinner mates had the Tim Special and Chicken Club. They were eagerly consumed! (As usual, I took about half of mine home, sigh.) The menu says they serve "NYstyle" pizza. I may have to try that next time I'm in town. I have been getting take out from this place for years. Every single time it is excellent. Many of my coworkers and I used to place an order together. Even though the order was huge and we ordered from them a lot, the order was correct and perfect every time. I ordered from them today for the first time in several years. My coworkers had never had food from here and they loved it. My friends ordered a Turkey Club (all that was said was OMG), a Buffalo Chicken Salad, a Chef Salad (presentation was cool, meat was rolled), a burger, and I got a side salad and an Eggplant Boli. They are already talking about when we order again! The sandwiches came with HOMEMADE chips and they were delicious. The Bolis are always amazing...dough and all breads and rolls are made in-house. The Bolis are always served with a side of sauce to dip in (they have different sauces). My side salad was kind of pricy for what I got. It was field greens with tomatoes and onions served with bread and butter. I'd personally rather skip the bread and have a larger side salad with more toppings. The salad wasn't worth the $3.50 to me. A few other things: *You can order online and it's so easy! Do it! *Their pizzas are also fantastic! Had them before. Every bit of the 3 stars is for the food. Everything else about the establishment was... not great. Went in about an hour before close and there were two guys in front of me, the phone rang a couple times with pick up orders/deliveries while I was there. and they have an online ordering system too, so the wait for the food may have been due to all of that. However, there's only one other restaurant I know of where food- regardless of volume- takes 40 minutes, and since I know that from working there, that restaurant shall remain nameless. That one is a full-service place with a complicated menu this, however, was pizza- which is essentially all a stromboli is, rolled up pizza. Basically the food took an extreeeeemely long time, and the 10 minute wait in line before I ordered without being acknowledged even when I was right in front of the cashier was not ideal. When I got up there the girl had no extra smiles for anyone, customers or coworkers. I'm hoping she was having a bad day and isn't just like that all the time, sounds awful. She also appeared to hit approximately 900 buttons for each item she was ringing in, so perhaps they should change the system if that is truly what needs to happen with each order... as it seems to be pissing off the employees and slowing down the whole process. Or maybe she's just not very good at that, tough to say. The wait wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't have some awfully loud deep house music or something playing from the kitchen the whole time. It will definitely be my last time ordering to go in person and waiting for it at Club Boli, that's for sure. Finally, and this is not important but kind of funny and sums up the vibe of "derf" that I got from the staff, I ordered a veggie stromboli, they asked if i wanted meatless marinara for dipping, I guess their default is a meat sauce. Sure. So when I get the stuff home there's two sauces, bf's fully meated sauce and my non-meated. But instead of labeling one "meat" or the other "veg", or "no meat" or any other logical thing, they label it " - meat", because as we all know the universal way to label a vegetarian dish is to write the word "meat" on it, with an ambiguous line in front of it. I have to say, before our experience tonight I would have given this place 5 stars. Normally the pizza is Delicious, and the first time I've ever ordered wings here they were boneless and fresh chicken that we've never had anything like before. Tonight, the wings were like any regular wings with minimal sauce. We ordered a specialty pizza and asked to remove one topping and add another and they unnoticeably charged us for another topping. In addition, they charge you a 3.99% service charge if you don't pay cash or check, but are never communicated that until you walk away confused about your bill and notice it at the bottom of your receipt.
