I tried out Stromboli's for a late lunch on Saturday. It was quite nice to be able to get a stromboli to go and eat it across the way in the beautiful greenspace outside Christ Church. Mine had chicken, feta and spinach with very tasty sauce to dip it in. I think I read on the menu that the sauce was homemade. The crust was very good too, even when I warmed up the leftovers later that day. Since it wasn't the normal lunch hour, I was one of three people in there and my food came out within 15 min. I noticed that they have wine and beer as well which is great if you plan to eat in. read more

This has been a go to place for my office. Their pizza comes out hot and the owner is always super friendly and interactive. Stromboli's are by far the best, but we love going here for the slices (couple slices and a drink for under $10) and salads. Specialty slices change everyday. Horrible I ordered a vegan Med Seitan Boli, lacks flavor just dough, couple green peppers and vegan cheese absolutely horrible. Not only that my Boli was $23 added jalapeños $1.50 like 5 of them. By the time my disgusting meal was delivered to me the total was $31.82 go figure!! I'm so annoyed that they would even sell something so disgusting. $31.82 for garbage I can't even eat it. I was just in the city for about 30 hours and this place was down the street from my hotel. I love stromboli's and Calzones and they did not disappoint at all. Cute small place, great service and even enjoyed a beer while I waited for my food. My real only issue was they guy making the food was wearing crocks or some type of sandals in the kitchen and were covered in flour not sure how sanitary that is. Stopped in on a whim with a friend- we both have food allergies so had been looking at websites for restaurants in the area to see who could accommodate both of us. They have an extensive vegan menu, and my friend got the stuffed shells (and highly recommends!). I'm gluten free, and have been trying nearly every gluten free food I can find. I will DEFINITELY be returning for more. The gluten free pizza was even better than any "normal" pizza I've ever had. I was happy to find some comfort vegan food downtown. They have a two page vegan menu (pics posted). Note that the costs go up a little compared to the non-vegan options. I tried the seitan steak stromboli. It hit the comfort/greasy craving that I find hard to fulfill. Be patient, it took about 5 min longer than the non-vegan orders after me. We're back. I swore I'd never be back, but here we are. It feels like just yesterday I was being preached at, lectured and over charged in this wonderful establishment. Today however, sooo much better. While we tried to order I was told ordering a Stromboli as a pizza as forbidden. What the hell? Like I'm not asking for the same price or same box or same anything. I'm just asking for the same toppings. Apparently some toppings are strictly for calzone usage and not to be placed anywhere near a pizza. Then we moved to a sandwich where I tried to order a hot sub with a couple extra toppings. Rookie mistake. They don't DO that here. The guy taking my order literally said 'It doesn't come like that' like ten times. Finally I just asked if I could order a custom sub to be made at which point he humored my fancy and only charged me $12 for it. A real saint. The owners are so incredibly homophobic and their staff are totally lost 100% of the time. Today, it's just the one guy, who's been taking orders for the past 20 minutes AFTER we put ours in. Fingers crossed we get our food within the hour. I'm not sure HOW this place is still in business. I never write terrible reviews but no joke...if I could write 10 more terrible reviews about this place. I totally would. Very good food. Guy taking our order made us feel guilty for ordering 20 minutes before close, and we heard him guilt three other parties blatantly while we waited for our food. "I need an order RIGHT now, and it NEEDS to be takeout". It happened the last time we were here as well. Again - great food but they should revise their closing policy. Asked the waitress/cashier/short order cook if the sub special was any good. She looked at me and asked "what do you want me to make for you?" Thought I would throw her a curve, roast beef and turkey, banana peppers, sweet peppers, flavored oil, lettuce, provolone, pepper jack and tomato on the side. First of all... the bread!!!!! Shakes the camera for effect...THE BREAD!!! All the ingredients were fresh, not too wet not too dry! and I got chips and a drink with it! WHAT!?!?!? Came to this place because I had purchased a groupon for $15 Its basically a hole in the wall,pizza joint downtown on East Ave, next to the bar Salingers, East Ave Commons etc. Stromboli Express is low frills. Seems like they specialize in strombolis but I did see some people ordering pizza slices. When my buddy and I walked in, sure we were a little skeptical. Did I mention the place is very low frills? I would call it a mom and pop place, but really there was only a mom. Yes, this was a one woman show. The cashier, cook and server were all one clearly overworked woman. I almost felt too guilty to order anything. Almost...I went with the chicken, pepperoni boli w/ a side salad, buddy chose the spinach feta boli with a side of fries. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the food here. Everything is made fresh to order, so there was a bit of a wait, but chatting it up with my bud and checking out the interesting characters that came in made time fly. We both finished our bolis, salad and fries. Cleaned our plates. I can't really comment on WHY the boli was good, it just was. I'm totally opinionated when it comes to conventional pizza, but when you basically roll it up into a boli, I'm at a loss for words? I mean the crust, sauce, fillings, cheese tasted great. The service was damn near exceptional considering there was just one broad running the place. I would definitely go back here, maybe next time I'll try the pizza. read more

Well, the pizza tasted good going in, but did not sit well on my stomach. I've never been sensitive to greasy food before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. Granted, the pizza was very greasy... I would have given it 4 stars as the food was okay, the outdoor seating was nice, and the kiosk to order so you didn't have to wait in line was very convenient. However, while I was waiting to order at the kiosk and chatting with a coworker, one of the cooks pushed through the line and said "out of my way" to me. How rude! I couldn't believe it. That's no way to treat a paying customer, let alone another human being. I hope that was just a one-off bad experience, but someone should talk to the cooks about proper manners. read more

Great pizza, even better Stromboli. My personal favorite thing here is the breakfast stromboli, but the original pepperoni is great as well. This place also has great subs for a more than reasonable price. As far as food for the price, this place is a 10/10. I love the atmosphere and the staff, as well as the food. I've been walking past this place in the East End for a while and my boyfriend and I have been very curious. After another place was closed, we stopped in for an impromptu drink on a Sunday afternoon/early evening. Everyone was extremely nice and allowed us to stay while we drank and not rush us out. So when we got caught in a storm yesterday (another Sunday!) we decided to try their food. After how nice they were and the ambiance inside, we had to try it. Somehow, the food surpassed even the kindness of the staff. We were able to order online, the delivery came quickly and was reasonably priced, and when we tried our food it was PHENOMENAL. We got the mini bolis which were still a decent size. The chicken and broccoli boli was great, the bacon cheeseburger boli was delicious, but the real star was the original boli. Every flavor worked well together and each bite was a punch of amazing flavors. Definitely a must have and it already has me itching to have more! read more

Pros: They have vegan cheese; the pizza I ordered tasted OK; the staff were polite. Cons: They seem disorganized; I think I was overcharged, and they didn't respond when I tried to contact them through their website; parking on East Avenue can be a real problem. My review is based on just a single take-out order. I bought a vegan-cheese pizza to go. When I first tried to call-in the order, the employee told me that Stromboli's didn't have any vegan cheese that day, so we ended the call. Then, a minute later, he called me back and told me that they did, in fact, have vegan cheese. So I ordered a large pizza with four toppings. When I came to pick it up, the clerk apparently hit the wrong button on the point-of-sale system, and couldn't figure out how to fix it. Another woman came out from the back, and she couldn't fix it, either. So they couldn't charge my credit card. Luckily, I had enough cash on me to pay the bill in greenbacks. When I got home and started to think about the cost, I felt that they had over-charged me. I tried to contact them through the website to ask about the cost, but I never heard back from them. It's so luck that I have tried 4 kinds of Bolis for free(Thanks for Warner School!) Eggplant, Chicken Broccoli, Ham Cheese and Supreme. For me, eggplant and ham cheese are not very special, they are OK though. Chicken Broccoli is good, but not as good as Supreme, my favorite one! I want to start by say that I regularly order from stromboli express and have had good experiences,until today I ordered boneless chicken wings and in rochester the assumption is that they they are breaded and fried chicken but what we got was was unbreaded and unfired chunks of chicken. When I called back to see about getting this fixed I was told that was how they served boneless wings and they won't replace them or give me a refund, I spoke to the owner and was told I can get a $5 credit for the next order basically saying he doesn't care how others make their food he makes food the way they want and doesn't care if people like or not if it's wrong or not what you want you're stuck with it. As an executive chef my goal is to make my guests happy so they come back this was not his customer service goal. They just can't seem to get it together here. Food is good but they are constantly late on orders and do not seem to understand how to time things. I ordered a pizza over the phone. Arrived ten minutes late of the pickup time and they hadn't made it yet. I bought the pizza for the office and now I won't have time to eat it myself. This is not the first time this has happened either. I got an apology and nothing else. It's a shame. Great location. Great food so far but when the cook was refillibg the sauce on the line he poured from the can into the pan that had been there. Not a new one. He then stuck the can under the tap for the handwash sink, swirled it around and poured that mix into the pan holding the sauce. Not sure its unsanitary but its def something. read more

Came in at 11:00 am. Despite the door being, open, the place was dark and music was blaring. I asked the (owner?) if they were open, and he condescendingly replied, "we are always open." I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fried mushrooms. It took about twenty minutes to get my food. I was the only one in the restaurant. I get my food and drive back to work. I discover that there were no fried mushrooms. I drive back. The cashier who took my order said she heard me say fried mushrooms, but forgot to bill me for them and didn't put them on the ticket. Then I get back to work and discover that the burger is raw, not rare, RAW in at least half of the burger. If this is how they are at 11:00, I can't imagine the messed up orders when they are busy. read more

I really tried to convince myself that 5th time was a charm. Because this establishment is across the street from my work and there are limited food options, i decided to give Stromboli's one last try..... That was a mistake. I won't even bother getting into the prior 4 times my order was trash, but this was the absolute tipping point. I ordered a vegan stromboli online and selected a side of blue cheese. Online there is no designation as to vegan or regular, so i made sure to check with the gentleman cashing me out. He assured me that everything in my order was vegan and i went on my way. The blue cheese was great and i was raving to my coworker how close it tasted to regular blue cheese dressing that contains dairy. I know they have a vegan chef on board for their cheeses so i figured the individual was just really good at recreating flavors. There were no chunks of cheese to let me believe otherwise. Once i reached the bottom of the cup i found a chunk... I squished the chunk between my fingers to discover it was not tofu but an actual piece of blue cheese. When i walked back to the establishment to make the restaurant aware of their error, the owner became indignant and said it was my fault for not specifying in my online order that i wanted vegan blue cheese. (Mind you there was no option for V blue cheese, i ordered a vegan stromboli, and the guy at the register assured me everything was vegan.) When i explained they did not give an option online and that i verbally asked an employee he said that most of his customers that order vegan aren't vegan -_- I said that is irrelevant to my situation and that i was assured by the cashier it was vegan. His response was that that guy didn't know what he was talking about, and that if the sauce was vegan it would say this on the outside. I asked how i as a customer am supposed to know how they designate their sauces and explained that i just consumed nearly a whole container of sauce when i haven't had dairy in 2 years. He asked what i wanted him to do about it... A simple apology and recognition of their error from the beginning would have sufficed but instead it became a whole ordeal resulting in me never ordering from here again. I do hope they can learn from their very obvious mistake. In the meantime i will be letting everyone i know (especially people following a plant based diet) to not patronize this establishment. read more

This place sucks. I was told 30 minutes for the delivery of a calzone. One hour and 15 minutes later it arrived. Cold, soggy, and completely inedible. It was quite honestly one of the grossest things I've ever attempted to eat. It was completely undercooked, I tried feeding it to my dog so it wouldn't be a complete waste of $20, but even he wasn't having it. Never again. GROSS. read more

Unbelievable pepperoni pizza (two times in a row). Not too thick, perfect sauce. This is the only place I have have gotten a good pizza at in Rochester in a year, and we've ordered out and been disappointed a lot. Get this- I call ten minutes before they close for delivery.
