Both amazing with fresh ingredients and delicious buns- the dipping sauce with the Mexican burger was spicy and sweet, sort of like molé. Visiting New York this week. We were anticipating a visit with our niece; which included lunch at Strong Hearts Café! For first timers like me, Strong Hearts Café sits in an unassuming building with no outside signage marking its location. There is instead a banner up high inside the front window. This makes finding Strong Hearts challenging for newbies. After several satellite voyages around and around Genesee St., our niece Nicole guided us successfully to the objective. The ambiance of SH is excellent with 1940s lighting fixtures, fans, and woodwork, and a large front window letting in plenty of light. What is lacking in outside signage is made up for by plenty of inside menus, décor items, pastries, baked goods, and t-shirts for sale. A very warm and comfortable café with great smells. We ordered Sweet and Sassy Tofu and BBQ Tempeh Sandwiches, a Cesar Chavez Chocolate Espresso shake, and for dessert, a Pina` Colada Cupcake. The Sweet and Sassy tofu sammie is exactly that! With fresh veggies and baked tofu served on a Ciabatta roll, it is distinctively savory and sweet with a great sauce. Likewise the BBQ Tempeh was delicious sitting between slices of toasted marbled rye bread. Finally, the Pina` Colada cupcake was delectable with that enticingly unique flavor! Even though Strong Hearts Café is a challenge to find, once you do you'll never forget where it is. If I lived in Syracuse, Strong Hearts Café would definitely be one of my home away from home hangouts where you could find me anytime! Oh my!! The milkshakes alone are worth the trip! Non-dairy? No way!! They were out of what I originall wanted, but they readily customed another to my liking. I forget the name of the sandwich I had, but it was huge and amazing. I had the hardest time deciding what to get- I really don't think there is a bad thing on the menu. The food service was really slow but we were there right at peak hours, and since the shakes came out first, we were happily occupied! I was excited to be able to visit Strong Hearts on a day trip from Buffalo to Ft Drum. We placed a to-go order online when we were about 15 min out and it was ready shortly after we got there. We ordered the Cali tofu scramble - I didn't taste this but was told it was delicious, the avocado toast - a unique take on an old favorite that was absolutely incredible, and the fingerling potatoes, which were perfect. Everything was delicious and exceeded our expectations, so much so that we decided we would be returning on our way home for a sit down meal. We ordered the feta dip, a chicken salad sandwich, and the sassy burger for dinner. The portions were all quite large and we each brought home a sizable portion of leftovers. Once again everything was delicious and we were thrilled to have made the small detour to eat here. Then we got our leftovers packed and went up to the counter to order desserts to go. One of the staff already had the cheesecake out to box up an order for another customer so I let her know that we would also be getting a slice. She thanked us (the tray was heavy) and boxed one up and set it on the back counter. We ordered the slice of cheesecake and a cherry vanilla cupcake from the person at the register and let her know the cheesecake was already boxed up. She asked us if we would like a bag to carry everything and we packed up our stuff and moved off to the side so the people behind us could order while we waited for the cupcake. After a few minutes I told her that we were still waiting for the cupcake. She turned around toward the back, I thought she was getting the box. Then it became apparent that she was talking about us to two other employees, what with all of their glances toward us and the dessert display counter. Then the person who had boxed the cheesecake also saw what was happening and moved over toward the group and shook her head while she said "That was for a different customer." Only then did the person who took our order move to package up the cupcake and give it to us without a single word to us. The person who did this appeared to be management. She had nodded to us while we were eating, cleaned the table next to us, and interacted with us when we placed our dessert order. She could have easily said "Oh, I thought she boxed it when she boxed the cheesecake." Or just asked us, instead we stood there awkwardly while she acted as if we were trying to steal a cupcake. Sadly, we will not be stopping there again on future trips. read more

Their burgers USED to be phenomenal, and then their changed their burger patter to the impossible burger and now it's just no longer special or as good as the previous patties they used to use. Their burgers now might as well be Burger King Impossible burger that's overpriced. The price went up but patties taste worse? huh? make it make sense. I absolutely love this restaurant. The staff are ALWAYS friendly, and the food is sooo delicious. They care about their customer's allergies and are conscious cookers. The vibe of the restaurant is relaxed and clean, and they have outdoor seating too. My only complaint is that the food is pricey. I appreciate that there's a place like Strong Hearts Cafe in the area. Especially when I was visiting from out of town for an extended time and following a strict vegetarian/vegan diet. I ate there several times so I didn't bother my family having to make me separate plant based meals or think of making my own stuff everyday in their kitchen. There are places with vegan options on their menu but this place being 100% vegan takes a lot of planning and pressure out of it all together. I liked a majority of the things I tried but nothing on the menu stands out to me as the "best thing ever" or as something that I would personally recommend. Like all places (vegan or not), not everything on the menu will be a winner for everyone, that's just personal taste. I am a big fan of their milkshakes. I'm a fan of milkshakes in general but the fact that these are vegan milkshakes that hold their own with the rest makes them stand out. There are not even many non-diary ice creams that I even enjoy out there so it's major to have these delicious less guilt milkshakes available. The Bobby Sands (mint chocolate chip) and Fred Hampton (chocolate, oreo) are the two I usually go for. My only complaints are the parking situation (metered) and the small space/not enough dining or standing/waiting room. Sometimes it's just awkward to stand and wait to order or wait for a table to clear up. I hear that they are relocating to a larger space soon so I hope that that would elevate some of the issues I brought up. Strong Hearts is a casual and quaint cafe that offers a variety of vegan eats and drinks. This place has been recommended to me for several months and I finally got to try them out on this rainy day, and it was definitely worth the trip! I just want to say that I love that they have such a variety of vegan dishes! I'm not vegan but it was actually pretty hard for me to choose what to order, which isn't a horrible problem to have... I decided on the "chicken" salad sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it! The chicken salad itself wasn't too heavy and the portion was great for a hearty lunch. I do wish there was a pinch of black pepper added, but that's a personal preference. I was a bit curious if the gardin chicken would still have enough moisture for the chicken salad, but it did. And the sandwich was nicely paired with the dressed greens. My friend also enjoyed her food, she ordered the roasted vegetables hummus wrap. I wanted to order this but unfortunately, they only have cilantro hummus... Hopefully they'll consider a different hummus flavor next time! The staff are friendly but pretty hands-off with service, which can be nice for some folks. The space itself is smaller than I expected given the building size, but it reminds me of hipster/trendy coffee shops I frequented back in grad school--that's a positive for me! This seems like a great spot to get some work done as well and wasn't too crowded during the late lunch hours. So, if you're looking for vegan dishes or a change in your average fast food or quick lunches, I'd recommend Strong Hearts. The prices don't break the bank and they offer much more than just your average veggie sandwich as they have different vegan/vegetarian-friendly substitutes such as tempeh, tofurky, gardin chicken, etc. Also, they offer milkshakes! The staff is extremely friendly and the service was quick! Its hard enough as a vegan to find food options but a place that is 100% catered to it -- is such a treat. I am dairy, soy and gluten free due to an allergy. I chose this restaurant because it was vegan and had gluten free options. When I asked the person at the front if there was anything I could have without soy, she just blatantly said no. She then pulled out a binder and started looking at ingredients and did offer to ask in the back about a particular food choice. When she got back, she just started taking other customers without even letting me know if they could accommodate me. I understand they aren't a restaurant for people with allergies but I thought I would have been treated like a decent customer instead of a nuisance. The Chef's Special was a plate of delicious apple pancakes that were some of the best pancakes I've ever eaten. The avocado toast hit the spot, as well. I'm in love with this place all over again! I don't live nearby, but whenever I visit Syracuse, eating here is my number one must-do activity. I've been away for a few years and now that they've moved to their new home at 900 East Fayette St, it's a brand new experience for me with a familiar menu. In summer 2021, I had the chicken spiedie sandwich, the sweet n sassy Beyond burger, and the chicken bacon ranch sandwich. Oh and a milkshake every time too, from their list of over 40 different flavors. All of my orders came out correct and within a decent time. The employees here have a lot of positive energy, were really professional and efficient, and just seemed to be enjoying their day. I spent a few moments gazing longingly into the dessert display, but I'll have to save that for another time. The cupcakes look fantastic. read more

Non-vegan here! This place is very cute. Conveniently located, lots of options. My friend and I split a macaroni salad to start, which was hearty and unbelievably non-diary. For lunch, we ate a bbq tempeh sandwich with chips and a sweet and sassy sandwich with tofu. The sauce on the sweet and sauce sandwich was to-die-for and with the added avocado, it was delicious. I'm not a big fan of tofu or tempeh, but I definitely enjoyed the food. We split a cola from the fridge, which was made from cane sugar. I'm not much of a soda drinker, but it was way better than Coca-Cola. To end off our meal, we split a chocolate coconut cupcake, which was definitely yummy. It tasted like those snowball desserts from 7/11 but with half the calories, it's a no-brainer! Restrooms are conveniently located around the corner (inside) and there's a massage spot upstairs. For my first vegan experience in Syracuse, I'd definitely recommend, and I wish I could've tried a milkshake and/or the double-decker burger, advertised at the front. Both sounded amazing! We were in Syracuse for a day. We decided to try Strong Hearts Cafe since their vegan offerings appeared interesting on Yelp. We were glad we did! We had the Grilled Cheese with Tomatoes and Seitan "Bacon" and the "Eggs Benetricked" The Grilled Cheese sandwich was delicious. The Grilled Cheese sandwich can hold its own against any grilled cheese sandwich I've had. The Seitan Bacon was delicious. The Tomato was fresh. Excellent for breakfast and I'm sure for lunch too. The "Eggs Benetricked" is one of the best Vegan or non Vegan breakfast items I've had the privilege to enjoy. The "Eggs" were perfectly prepared Tofu discs. The sauce with chopped sweet Onions had the requisite creaminess, savoriness and pleasantly subtle tartness. The "Eggs Benetricked" is worth driving several hours to enjoy. The Recess drip Coffee served the Strong Hearts Cafe was perfectly made. A bargain at $2.4O for a bottomless cup (if partaken in the cafe). Nice comfortable space. I don't find myself in Syracuse very often and I'm still not entirely sure how I ended up there yesterday but I'm pretty glad we stumbled upon the Strong Hearts Cafe! This place is located across the street from a nice park and located in what likes like some sort of old government building. It's a small but spacious little cafe that gives you a bunch of different sandwich options, scramble options, sweet options, and a plethora of milkshakes I'm currently kicking myself for not trying. I ended up settling on a tofurky club sandwich with fake bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, mayo, and some kind of sprout with a monstrous cookie on the side (this with split between two people, I swear). The sandwich took a bit to come out because they were busy (Which is definitely no problem) and when it did come out I ended up liking it way more then I expected! The sandwich was absolutely delicious and satisfied my hunger more then I could of imagined. It's cut in 4's and it was served with some greens on the side (You could also get potato chips). The cookie though, the cookie was next level. It's basically a massive piece of cookie dough where the middle is pretty much raw (which is how every cookie should be). Alright I went here sober earlier this month and can now actually speak on the amazing food. The menu is displayed on the wall to the right of the register. You order at a register, they give you a number, you sit down and they bring it over when it's ready. When you're done, you throw trash away and put the dirty dishes into a bus bin. They have a ton of options that could make anyone happy. This time, I enjoyed the eggs benetricked. Instead of seitan, I asked for vegan sausage. They upcharged me for this, but I think it was worth it since I don't care for seitan. It was really good! And unique. Their hollandaise is just bomb. The prices are decent for the quality of food. Service was regular paced. Woman at the register was nice. No issues! Definitely check this place out, whether you're vegan or not! read more

I love vegan desserts so despite being very full from lunch I swung by to check out the dessert case. This cafe was bustling on a Sunday afternoon! I kinda wish I had stopped here for lunch instead. But I'll just need to come back for lunch now! Oh well! So- they had a great variety of desserts! I ended up picking between 3 different kinds of cookies. They have Recess Cookies (another local coffee shop), and two house made ones. Per recommendation, I went with the double chocolate and it was amazing!! It was a nice balance of crunchy and chewy! I also grabbed their muffin for the day. I didn't pay attention to the type because I was hooked on the candies nuts sprinkled on top. Turns out it had an amazing chai flavor and the muffin had chunks of candies nuts inside it as well! So so good!! I very much recommend coming here!! read more

This place is the best. As a vegan, Strong Hearts has really improved the quality of my life because, basically, I'm too lazy to cook. The menu is very large, and all the food is great quality. I really can't imagine who would like their sassy sauce or want peanut butter in a smoothie or shake, but that's just personal preference. I get so super psyched when I suddenly realize I either have to order strong hearts or sink into a deep depression. Mmm, I not sure I have a favorite item on the menu, but maybe it's the wild west burger - I just take out like half of the jalapeños. Stronghearts has over 50 nondairy milkshake flavors on its menu - some make it feel like you do when you won't have to go to work the next day. Guys, I'm most definitely not a vegan, but I have to admit that sometimes vegans just do it right. Strong Hearts whips up tasty, creative, and decadent meals, baked goods, and beverages. When I first came in, I noticed the menu, and I mean two chalkboards full of milkshakes, for which I've heard Strong Hearts does fantastically. I asked the cashier which milkshakes she likes and she recommended a customer favorite, the peanut butter & chocolate and another fruity milkshake, the pineapple orange. It's so hot today, I'm talking 94, and so I almost had the smoothie-like, refreshing pineapple orange, but I chose the peanut butter chocolate because apparently it's super popular. Okay so the milkshake was THICK, and deeply chocolate. Our cashier also told us that it had other nut butters in it, so there was a surprising element of another texture and taste which certainly improved the overall quality and distinguished this milkshake from any other peanut butter chocolate. My friend, who had come here previously on a date, loved this place. Can I just say that Strong Hearts is doing something good when my friend goes on a date with a crappy guy who introduces her to this restaurant and she likes the restaurant better than the guy? Anyways, we both enjoyed our breakfasts. My friend ordered the French toast and a cookie dough milkshake and I had the spicy tofu scrambled eggs with my milkshake. Something I did not know--either Strong Hearts makes the best tofu scrambled eggs or tofu scrambled eggs are a revelation. They taste exactly like regular eggs, same texture, bite, flavor. My meal was served with rye bread, all buttered and toasted. The eggs packed a punch--flavorful and spicy and light, but filling, like I can't think about eating for a bit. They had some banana peppers that just popped. The ambience was exactly how you'd picture a vegan, well-known/liked/respected, culinary sharp and modern, hipster cafe/restaurant to look like. Dark color scheme, chalkboard writing, beverage drink self-serve fridge full of lemon blueberry cupcakes, sriracha, kombucha, and gourmet lemonade (think blood orange). The waitress/cashier girl was so cute with her tattoos and piercings. And super helpful and kind. Great service. Even if you're not a vegan, you can still have some delectable vegan food. I don't know why people are so against it. I'm not Italian, but I freaking love fettuccini and gelato and pizza. So whatever. Ditch Panera, eat here. read more

I was looking forward to try out this place with so many good reviews but I left disappointed and with stomach aches. I am familiar with vegan food, I also make tofu scramble at home but was curious how it tastes at the restaurant. I ordered Green Tofu Scramble with a side of salad, and the presentation was pretty nice. However, the scramble was very oily. The taste was good (even though it was not better than what I make at home) no complaint there, but all that oil! Really, it's unnecessary. I make tofu scramble without any oil, actually it's even softer and nicer if you add a bit of water instead of oil. So yeah, it was very greasy breakfast. My stomach was pretty upset afterwards. My husband tried it and he also thought it was too much oil. Then I ordered their famous Cajun Seitan Sandwich to go, just curious how it tastes. The sandwich was actually good, except the seitan part. Not a fan of it really, but someone who likes the taste of cajun meat, this could be a great and filling option. I also have to comment on the side salad. The dressing was simple and basic, tasted cheap and vinegary. And for my to go sandwich (with salad) I did not receive a fork and napkins. The tofu Thai salad is great here, and while the menu has evolved to cater to the university crowd with more fried food options it is still a great vegan restaurant. The side salads of pasta, potato and macaroni are all good, and several bakery items are tasty and round out a meal here. read more

Staff is always pleasant and helpful. Food is cafeteria grade, some good, some okay, The restaurant is nice, clean, comfortable and well lit. I think daily specials are a good idea, but at least one special could be a-bit cheaper, (i.e. a soup & sandwich). We will continue to stop in, but more because it's a nice place with good staff and okay food. Also we are happy there is a local vegan restaurant that isn't horrible. read more
