Very disappointed in this place lately. Chicken has been small pieces and overdone. Chicken was so dried out tonight, I didn't even eat my entire piece. My daughter had "mashed" potatoes and there were entire huge lumps of potatoes in them. Like whole potatoes. The "cinnamon" rolls had no cinnamon on them. I used to love their cinnamon rolls, but I didn't even eat one tonight because I looked at it as wasted calories. If you aren't going to enjoy it at all, why waste the calories to eat it! Delicious. They've adjusted their menu for pricing and portions. Still a bit pricy. $10.95 or $12.95 for a chicken sandwich and fries. I like their appetizer/starter chicken nibbles (not sure what they're called, little round deliciously fried chicken balls) Just $8.95 with plenty to share and plenty to take home! Their mashed potatoes are delicious! I found a "lump" so they are made from scratch! Chicken noodle soup is their specialty... enjoy! You won't leave hungry. One negative note, follow up service for refills, sauce, etc ...you pretty much need to flag down wait staff. For that reason only 4*. Pretty average fried chicken... that's about all. The food... I tried the fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes and my two sides. After much acclaim from my co-workers I was expecting a lot of the friend chicken. While it might be freshly fried, I don't think there's really any real seasoning or strong flavor to the chicken. The breading is fairly thin and moderate (maybe good for some folks), but that means you're really just getting chicken plus a bit of fried skin. Still decent, but nothing amazing. The sides were all okay, nothing out of the ordinary or too impressive. The venue... definitely a Midwestern family restaurant. The service is extremely polite, prompt, and nice. There's more than ample seating here. Overall... I don't think it's worth it, but for a quick fried chicken fix, maybe. read more

Never ever again! We found ourselves scrambling for restaurants open on Thanksgiving and were excited when we found Stroud's (Overland Park) had an opening. The online description said carving stations. There were no carving stations. The mashed potatoes tasted like fish...and I tried different batches. Extremely overpriced at near $40/person not including a beverage. The cinnamon rolls resembled something one gets from a can. So disappointed. Never again!!! read more

I love visiting this restaurant even though it's far from where I live. There is always this nice gentleman that greets you in the front area. Everyone at that place should be like him with a smile on his face. There is always a wait time if it's weekend. My only dislike is that the server we had was a little bit grumpy. She was always in a hurry that's why she usually spilled things. Servers should be more welcoming to their customers. My choice of food is the spicy chicken bites and it's always crunchy and hot with a lot of sauce too. The portion is also big which is very nice since not a lot of restaurants do that. Overall, I will recommend this place to my family and friends. read more

My friend and I arrived here at 5:30 on a chilly Sunday evening. We had both heard wonderful things about Stroud's in the past, and had eaten here years ago. Well, a lot has changed. The prices are still pretty high - $17.95 for a 3-piece chicken dinner with sides - but the chicken was just dry and tasteless. I can get better fried chicken at Walmart or Price Chopper. We wondered when we entered why the place was mostly empty. Only two other tables had customers at what should have been prime dining time. The waitress was nice, but a bit inattentive - she never refilled my water glass throughout the whole meal, even though it sat empty. We each ordered a beer ($5.25) and chicken dinners. The salad was nice: a small saucer of lettuce and carrot shreds with croutons & lots of shredded cheese. There was a basket of crackers and mini-breadsticks already on the table, which we munched on while sipping our beers. The chicken came on a big platter. There was also a big bowl of mashed potatoes and two smaller bowls of gravy and green beans. No dinner rolls were served. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent - just like grandma used to make, and good enough to make a meal of by themselves. The green beans were pretty tasty, too. But the chicken - nope, nope, nope! Nasty, dry, and completely tasteless. I can do better than that, and I am no cook. They asked if we wanted the cinnamon rolls (included with the dinner) served with the meal or after. We had them served after, and they arrived hot and fragrant. But they weren't really cinnamon rolls. They were medium-sized dinner rolls baked on a bit of cinnamon and butter, with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled over the top. No trace of frosting, either. They were tasty, but they weren't anywhere near The Corner Cafe's, either. The waitress obligingly brought boxes & bags for our leftovers. (I forgot to mention that there were free refills on the sides.) She also brought extra gravy for us to take home with our leftover potatoes, since we'd eaten it all. The restrooms, like the rest of the place, were pretty shabby. The bathroom door was so worn, it should have been repainted YEARS AGO. The sinks were an impressive hammered brass, but old and shabby-looking as well. It's pretty bad when a place famous for its fried chicken can no longer cook good chicken. This place has really gone downhill. It's not worth the price just for the mashed potatoes and gravy. read more

Very disappointed on weekend carry out order! Somethings changed in last month or so at Strouds South! Go North! They shorted us 1 salad, green beans were cold, chicken tasted great like usual but 25% smaller and gravy was watery and super soupy! I've been a loyal customer to all locations for over 30 years and this place was embarrassing to me with my friends visiting and I bragged they were (literally WERE!) the best chicken place in the Country! We traveled 11 hours yesterday non stop from Colorado in the car yesterday to dine at Stroud's Overland Park. Not only were we greeted with open arms, the service was outstanding and the fried chicken...OMG. The best ever. So hot and crispy and pan fried to order with homemade mashed potatoes, delicious real pan gravy and slow cooked seasoned green beans with chunks of ham and fresh cinnamon rolls. Does it get any better? How about livers and gizzards? So good. Did I mention homemade chicken noodle soup? It was boiling hot and the perfect starter on a below zero January evening. And chicken fried steak to take home along with more potatoes/gravy and green beans. So many leftovers for three more meals. We were celebrating Jordan Spivey's birthday and our server Janelle brought over a mini bundt cake with a sparkler. She came by several times to refill soda and tea and clean the table. So efficient and attentive. Jeanie, the manager, was working the floor, checking tables and stopped by several times to say hello and make sure all was ok. We have enjoyed Strouds for many, many years, but last night's carryout truly disappointed us. The chicken portions were smaller than in the past. Baked potatoes are no longer available, only mashed, French or cottage fries. Far from the jumbo baked potatoes of the past. Lastly, offered up with an apology, only one cinnamon roll per dinner, where in the past it was two. This was still a $28+ dinner, it's chicken, not a steak! Not sure I'll be back. So let's be short and sweet, the fried chicken is perfect in most every way. The breading is just right, the meat juicy and tender. Beyond the fried chicken, the sides are incredible! The mashed potatoes (real I might add) taste like something you would eat growing up at your grandma's house, and the gravy I believe comes from heaven. The green beans are one of my favorite as well. Also, the massive jumbo fried shrimp is excellent. read more

This was supposed to be the best fried chicken I ever had... it wasn't. I ordered the spicy dark meat 2 piece. For an outrageous price I got two small pieces of very oily, flavorless chicken. The meat was very moist, but tasteless. The spice on it was weird. It was slightly hot and oddly...sweet. Not delicious at all. The fries were oily and limp. Not my type of fry. Even the salad was too small and over drenched in dressing. Also it was just lettuce and one slice of cuc. Where's the tomatoes and other yummies? Atmosphere was nice. Service was good. Had early lunch here today. Very disappointing! $60 for two. We both had chicken and it was hot and fresh but part of it was over cooked and dry. The sides were not even warm. The cinnamon buns weren't the same as they used to be. Service was poor. Sad to see this place so far downhill from the Stroud's I know and loved. read more

I've been a big fan of Stroud's for years, so it was big let down tonight! Our server Jody is a Rock Star and was the best part of the experience. The restaurant only had a handful of customers when we arrived at 6. Our chicken arrived before we were halfway done with our salad, which I knew that unless time travel had been invented, there was no way "freshly" pan fried chicken was now possible in 15 minutes. A peek under the skin ended my dream of time travel with the sad reality of being served old chicken. Hours old! The manager brought out another "fresh" batch but it was clearly from the same bunch that had been cooked for lunch? Sorry to see the Stroud's legend reduced to soggy dry OLD chicken. Shame on the manager for her role in trying to pass off garbage as fresh! First time here and had to try the fried chicken (duh!). The chicken itself was super moist and flavorful, the portions were large, and our server (Becky) was amazing. Unfortunately, there was no flavor in the skin, which is the best part to me, and should be full of flavor and able to be enjoyed almost on it's own. Might be the style for pan fried, which admittedly I don't eat often, but also unfortunately the gravy had the same issue. It looked great and the consistency was perfect, but very bland. Had reservations for 7 o'clock on a saturday. Went right in with no delays even though there were several parties waiting in the lobby. Started off a little slow. Our server warmed up once she knew we were long time customers to multiple strouds locations. I had the chicken liver appetizer. Could easily be a meal. Ordered the chicken breast for dinner. Tried the express in Mission tonight and sad to say the indoor dining was closed so we did take-out. Not disappointed at all! Chicken was hot and fresh and outstanding. The pan fried chicken is pretty good- which is what its famous for- crusty skin and tender meat with sweet oily taste. The boneless cHicken nuggets were kind of dry, nothing special. We ordered jumbo shrimp and liver as appetizers- both tasted so bad we couldn't take more than one bite. Had the spicy chicken sandwich- not spicy at all and taste was mediocre. I really wanted to love this. Service was excellent. However a place famous for fried chicken left me wanting chicken for my local grocery store. The chicken was very bland . The cottage fries were over cooked and bland and instant potatoes. When we addressed there issues with the manager. He stated "we don't season our chicken , we let the customers do it." This surprised me so much I asked him to repeat it. Food seasoned in the cooking process is different than throwing a salt shaker at a customer. To sum it up . Very overpriced and very bland . I went to Strouds and had the 2 piece chicken lunch! I was in fried chicken heaven which is what I grew up eating! The food was great with mashed potatoes n chicken gravy and a bowl of beans. Now about the beans: they seemed to be so heavily peppered that I couldn't eat them! Take thee pepper shaker away from the cooks!! I have always loved Stroud's, my favorite one is in Wichita. I keep giving the OP location a chance, but the food is not consistent. More often then not, I leave disappointed in the quit of food for the high price. This past visit several in my party ordered chicken, and I was shocked at how small the pieces were. I ordered a two piece dark meal, and they gave me an extra leg because they acknowledged that they were small, but to be honest, it would take three to get the meat that should come on one. And the thigh was tiny. It was also dry, and kinda made me wonder if they were left over from the weekend. The crackers on the table were stale, and the salad was not what you would expect for the price of the meal. Their saving grace is always the waitresses. They are very accurate and attentive. Sadly, I'm thinking it might be time to forgo this location. read more
