Grabbed a coffee next door and headed over for some sweet treats from Stuart's- the huge, beautiful assortment and friendly service made it my choice over other nearby options. Unfortunately, the fruit tart crust was extremely crunchy and the chocolate cheesecake was heavy and dense with a chalky aftertaste that we didn't care for. After I got my Americano from JJ Beans, we strolled over to Stuarts Quality baked goods. The have a huge variety of breads, cookies, cakes, tarts, croissants, cheese cakes, buns, etc. You get the point, lots of yumminess! It's a little on the pricey side but it's located in the middle of a big tourist spot. So, I don't mind the premium as it's totally worth it. The cheese cakes are very tantalizing with so many different types. I see so many people walking by just staring at the mouth watering display of loveliness. They usually don't buy anything on the first walk by, but they eventually break down by the third. Don't fight your urge to splurge, people! Unless you are blind, there is no way you will miss the colorful, seductive dessert display of Stuart's Bakery if you are walking around in the Granville Island Public Market! Anything you can think of, it's most likely in the selection and maybe even beyond your imagination. Everything in the display looks so delightful, and fortunately or unfortunately (Depending on your prospective) each item is slightly pricier so you can't just collect 'em all. However don't be shy and get yourself at least something from here, because any choice you get here will be as delicious as it looks! Update: I was contacted by the manager shortly who was very helpful in informing me that due to staffing shortage during the pandemic, they are not able to make all the items and due to the short personal encounter he wasn't able to tell me that when I was there. I really appreciate for management to reach out to this bakery's fan who has been visiting for the past decade. *********** Today/Sunday, we stopped by to buy some gingerbread man cookies before heading home to the US tomorrow. When I didn't see them I asked if they have any in the back and was told by 2 people that they don't have them until December. Then I told them, I was just here on Thursday (3 days ago) and bought 4 of them plus a snowman cookie. I was told, really?! we usually don't have them until December. I told them I've been here during late November for the past 10 years and I always by them for my kids because they're their favorite. Glad we bought some a few days ago, however it's a disappointment that the folks at the bakery don't know what they're telling their customers. I would've been fine if they said the cookies were sold out but talking about them like they never existed is bazaar. I'm now guessing this is under new management perhaps. In the future, we will call ahead to check and won't expect them to be there anymore so the kids are not disappointed again. Wow the audacity of this place surprises me on how they remain in business... nothing fresh here except their FRESH attitude... My story will be quick i was in search of a key lime pie treat seeing the consistency asked one of the two asian robots about possibly trying a sample of the item prior to purchase since we weren't sure if it was a custard or cream filling i was hoping to get some guidance with that unfortunately they said no sample and don't worry we are the best in Vancouver right now, so i bought one. The inside of it was undercooked i showed it to them they said sorry this is how it is and like the robots they are moved to the next customer. I was drawn to this bakery after some strolling through the market, and seeing the desserts/pastries that all looked appetizing. Unfortunately, I ended up regretting my purchases. Cinnamon Record ($4.65): Like others have mentioned, this is almost like a French Palmer cookie. At first, it seemed pretty good. But then after a few bites, it gets really sweet, and that ended up overpowering the cinnamon flavor. I had to throw in the towel shortly after. Chocolate Chunk & Ginger Snap Cookies ($2.35 each): They both were incredibly dry, and lacked any real flavor. It also seemed like they were both missing some sugar. The amount of pastries that get produced at this location is astounding, and to be quite honest, very overwhelming when you are trying to decide what to get. But that also means there's something for everyone! We opted to share a simple Mousse and also one of their Strawberry Tarts. Initial reactions. Mousse = AMAZING Strawberry Tart = DOUBLY AMAZING i really enjoyed the smooth creamy texture of the mousse, and the strawberries were large and very juice. Also the custard at the bottom of the strawberry tart - light and delicious. The only downside about this place is that the line up to pay is very confusing and not obvious at all. You need to be able to differentiate between people that are just standing there browsing, people that are walking by, and people that are actually placing an order. First time trying out this place. Resisted myself from getting any desserts for the longest time, but this time I tried it with my mom. Mom ordered the french creme brulee and I ordered my default desserts (tiramisu). I didn't really like the creme brulee, but my mom liked it. As for me, I enjoyed the tiramisu! When you go to the Granville Island Public Market, this is one of the shops that always have a lineup. The display is amazing. There's lots of desserts available and they all look yummy. I tried this place a long time ago and felt that the desserts were way too sweet so I wasn't really looking to buy anything. But this time, we got the black forest cake, tiramisu, blueberry pie and a bag of mini brioche rolls. I was pleasantly surprised that this time the desserts were not as sweet. The black forest cake was soft. The blueberry pie had lots of blueberry fillings. And I can now say that I would want to go back for the tiramisu! The brioche buns were fresh and buttery as well. The only complaint was that for a pack of 12 small rolls, these buns cost almost $8 which is pretty steep. Oh well, at least the 2 year old toddler enjoyed this as she ate 3 of them! It may be good to have a numbering system as it was kinda hard to figure out the lineup at times. Some people are just looking and admiring the baked goods while others are wanting to buy. Overall, this is a good place to indulge your sweet tooth and maybe buy something for snacks or breakfast. Prices are higher as with all the other shops in Granville Island. read more

Never Again!!!!! This was my favorite spot for Tiramisu. I'm a tiramisu lover, like all Sundays I came to Grandville Island. This time sometime was wrong with the tiramisu, maybe the whipping cream,it taste like rotten. I xpressed my concern to the cashier and I asked her to try it, she just gave me the receipt of the ingredients and tried another one and then she told me that everithing was ok. Honestly, this shop has good desserts. You run into a lot of pastry shops that have beautiful looking desserts but taste bland. Well, not this one! If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend the maple cheesecake. It is the ultimate Canadian experience for your taste buds. You can smell the maple syrup aroma and the first taste is a nice combination of that sweet maple flavor and cheesecake. It is super delicious. Very creamy and it's just a great combination of taste. The fruit tart we got was also pretty good. Nice chocolate covered, crunchy crust topped with various fruits. It's not too sweet. A lot of pastries tend to make desserts overly sweet and so far, we've had a pretty good experience here. Will definitely come again! read more

Being in Canada for the first time, we stopped over at this dessert place in the market area while visiting Granville Island. The presentation gets 5 stars in itself for all the different flavored desserts that they sell here. They have a variety of choices to pick from. Our friends got all different ones to try. Being the carb addict that I am, I'm always on the lookout for breads and baked stuff. So when Stuart's Bakery was the first thing I see upon entrance to the Public Market, I can't help but stare in awe at all their fresh fruit tarts, cookies, and other delectable goodies. Since we were there first thing in the morning, they had a fresh tray of their awesome cinnamon sticky buns gooey with frosting. Of course, we had to order that. We also went with a few cookies and a fresh blueberry tart that was absolutely phenomenal. The blueberries were still juicy, sweet and tart, and piled up high on the tart. Definitely worth the trip to Granville Island. As for the cookies, I decided on a Skor cookie, as well as a raspberry jam filled shortbread one. Both were tasty, tasy, tasty- I only wish I could get a steady supply of these cookies at all times. I'd love to know why Stuart's thinks it's okay to sell stale pastries for the same price as fresh. Earlier today I popped by to grab a croissant. It was an expensive croissant, and I had high hopes. This was an abomination of French proportions: it was chewy. It was stale. It was not crisp on the outside and buttery on the inside. Sacre bleu, it was just bad. Yes, the location in Granville Island is great, and yes, the display is gorgeous. Don't be fooled, though: looks can be deceiving. Did something change with this bakery recently? Compared to the last time I tried their eclairs, this time it was from a different world. The whipped cream, the pastury and the chocolate, they all had a perfect texture and flavour which was just sublime. I was getting tired of the eclairs where the pastury was too dry or the whipped cream was nothing but sweet/bland, or the chocolates too flakey too eat. So I'm very glad to have found my perfect eclair. I couldn't bring myself to give a 5 star for this bakery with just one item. Maybe I'll change my rating down the road when I've tried more of their goodies. The size was generous, but the $4 price tag seemed a tad pricy. read more

Stuart's is an institution at Granville Island. It's right in the heart of the open market area, and has been there for as long as I can remember. The pastries are luscious with great-quality ingredients and you can tell, baked with loving attention. There are line-ups on both sides of the counter, but worth the wait and to their credit, the cashiers work fast. Tried the granola here for the first time after hearing raves from friends, and worth every delicious, crunchy, sweet, nutty bite. You can buy it by the pound! read more

I think Stuart's should stick to what they do best... pies, pastries, and breads... not having made my macarons in a month, I needed motivation and I saw two kinds on their pastry counter - raspberry and apricot.... Seeing that the filling contained jam / preserves, I knew that it would be a sweet treat. however, the appearance of the shell looked too stiff and shiny, but I thought I would take a risk anyway. Not going to lie, the shell was too hard, and over chewy. I didn't like it. I pretty much opened the shell and licked the jam off it and that was it. Reminded me of the macarons I wouldn't want to share with my friends because they just didn't turn out. Luckily, I have supportive friends who will eat and give me constructive criticism... and I don't charge them. read more

Find your centre. Within about 10 seconds of entering the Granville Island Public Market, I find myself completely by-passing all of the vendors and heading towards the centre of the market. What is it that teases my senses so? Is it the butcher? The candlestick maker? Nay, it is the baker; delicious, thy name is Stuart. It usually takes me a good 3 minutes to finally decide which itty-bitty tart I want to pay $5 for, but once I bite into it, it's always followed by a, 'mmm, that was worth it.' A word to the wise, Stuart's goods should be reserved for special occasions, occasional visits or dire lift-me-ups, in order to prevent its upbringing luster from wearing off. Recommended baked good: blueberry tart, cinnamon disc, or my favourite- any jam-filled treat. Score: You shall find your centre, and it shall be gooey. read more

I come here every time I go to Granville Island and am awed by the stunning display of every dessert imaginable. It's gorgeous, and there are always new items that they play with. Unfortunately, the taste just doesn't deliver. Last year I got an apple pie that was just soggy on the bottom and bland. This year, the blueberry tart was SO gorgeous, but it barely had any pastry cream and the crust was like a hard cracker. The strawberry cheesecake was beautiful but the strawberry itself was really lacking strawberry flavor. The problem is, it then becomes just regular cheesecake because they did not incorporate strawberry into the batter, just the fresh berry on top. The macarons look good, but they're really bulky and something is just off about them. They're not smooth and very very sweet. read more

Great location and beautiful presentation but this is where the good stuff ends. Tiramisu does not represent anything remotely to that italian dessert. It's made via sponge cake and had no flavor what's so ever. Canolis were old and stale. The cheese cake was ok and the creme Brulee was excellent and fresh. Really disappointed with the decline in quality from this place. I used to love the Almond Croissant, enough to pay the crazy high price for it, but the last two times something definitely changed with the taste, and I'm now over it. I also used to love their Fresh Blueberry Tarts, but today the blueberries were shrivelled and kind of tough, so obviously they had been frozen, not fresh plump berries like before. The Key Lime Pie was delicious still, though! The Tiramisu cake slice, my boyfriend said, was not very flavourful, and definitely not what he was expecting, considering its his favourite type if cake. And the Profiterole Cup he got, the whipped cream had soured and hardened and was inedible. No idea how long something has to sit there for that to happen :/ I've called back about the Profiterole Cup, and the girl said we can get our money back for it, which is great. The pastries ($31.00+ for only 6) are not even day old, maybe week? for the bottoms to become soggy takes a few days I think, and this was the case here. I hate this place. Due to an industrial accident involving a LOT of cattle, I can no longer do dairy based foods. And then you walk by this place. Everything looks great. Everything smells great. Long lines of people waiting for baked goods can't be wrong. But, lo and behold at the end was a big container of fresh baked granola. I got some "to go." Half the bag didn't make it out the door of the market. The other half didn't make the water taxi ride to Yaletown. Spent the rest of our vacation trying to convince my wife to walk down the to Island again "Just in case we missed something cool" so that I could sneak another bag of granola. What we bought: The chocolate decadent slice is a thing of culinary beauty but beware it's richness as the first time I had it I was a beast and had to eat the entire thing. Needless to say it did not fair my stomach well. Fraser Valley blue berry tart had fresh real whipped cream and a large handful of berries, the tart was a little hard but still super tasty. Panninis are the best on the island without a doubt as they sell out super fast but a secret for all of you Yelper's, if you call ahead they can set some aside for you so you don't miss out. Princess Cake, okay it's pink but it tastes great so shut your face lol I highly reccomend this cake regardless if you have a daughter or not. My only quall is one slightly unsavourly fellow who works there, he looks like Bishop from the Aliens movies but in fairness to him I don't blame the guy because there are too many looky loos uncertain on what to buy. This bakery looks really yummy and the staff is super nice. However, the things aren't really that good for the price that you pay. The lemon bar was quite bland and had no lemon flavour really, and the chocolate eclair tasted like they forgot to add sugar in any of it. The chocolate was tasteless and the cream was not sweet at all. Quite disappointing as it was around $6. The fresh blueberry tart was the only thing that was decent. My bill for 3 items totalled to about $20 and sadly it really wasn't worth it. read more

Being the sweets lover I am, I was really excited when I saw the huge display of desserts and baked goods at Stuart's! I believe that there is something for everyone here and it was hard to make a decision as there were so many things that looked great! I ended up getting a nutella croissant the first day which was really tasty. The next day we came back to the market I got a Nanaimo bar, which was pretty good as well.
