Overall, we're satisfied with the work done on our '53 Commander Starliner. We found Tommy to be a great guy who really knows Studebakers. The problem with his shop seems to be that he's working with mechanics who don't. That causes communications problems, delays, and expensive repair errors, even though we had sent our repair requirements in writing. We did have to send the car back before everything was right. Also, be sure to check any billing from them. We ended up making our own spreadsheet of repair billing and it saved us a couple thousand dollars. As others have said, their comunication with customers needs improvement. Our upholstery is beautiful, but took way longer than it should have, leaving us anxious and fearing terrible things. Turns out that the upholsterer was out of the country, and then very sick, but nobody thought to tell us. Bottom line, if you're careful here and you check in regularly with them, they'll do a good job for you. read more

Ok. Let's start from the beginning. I asked to have my entire brake system checked over and make sure it was working properly. I had this shop go over my car to make sure it was road worthy. I picked up my car the FORST time and the owner says it's working perfect. I drive it home and had to have it towed back because the battery was dead and it wouldn't start. The second time I picked it up they said it was fine to drive. I took it home and after 12 hours I go to drive it and the brake pedal went to the floor. Had to have it towed back to the shop. They said they fixed it and sent me back home. I go to drive it and was on the road coming to a light and ALL t brakes failed again. I had to tun the car up into the sidewalk almost crashing into another car and running over some trash cans. I had this shop go over my whole brake system. The emergency brake was nonexistent. Had to have it towed back AGAIN. The fourth time I picked it up and drove it home the brake cylinder went out. This is after I had them go over the entire brake system. I get it home and tried to drive it the following day and it was backfiring and not running properly. I had it towed back to the shop for the fifth time. They call me and tell me that my #7 valve is burned up. I don't think this shop has any qualified mechanics. I've spent over 14k to have my car fixed and it now resides in my driveway because it's not running. W T F is wrong with these people. Is there no reputable shops left. I'm in the same position as I was when I first brought my car to them. If you want your car to be properly maintained and or worked on DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR TO STUDEBAKER RESTORATION. THIS IS A RIPOFF SHOP. I could have bought another car that was already running. PLEASE IF YOU WANT TO BE DISAPPOINTED BY ALL MEANS BRING THERE. We have Classic Car Restoration Company in Goliad, Texas and found ourselves in need of expert service 1400 miles away from our business. We sold a 1953 Studebaker Truck, which was taken by a transport to the Port in Long Beach on its way to Hawaii. The transport driver ended up killing the battery and causing some problems under the hood. The transport then had the truck taken to a garage close to the Port. Needless to say, the work was beyond their capabilities. We took a leap and called Studebaker Restoration, Ltd. if we would've done that in the first place we would have been able to catch the first boat! Tommy at Studebaker Restoration is a wizard. I had a 1963 Studebaker Hawk GT restored back East in Philadelphia and had it shipped to LA for it to enjoy the rest of its life on the road. Of course, once I began to drive it regularly things need adjusting repairing and fixing. I found Tommy through the Studebaker Drivers Club and once I visited I thought I was in heaven. Affable, relatable, knowledgable, and sociable, Tommy manhandled the biggest and smallest of the car's issues (fuel pump leakage, big electrical short, power steering leak, gas tank leak, squishy floor shifter, emergency brake failure, air lock issue) in record time. And, if it wasn't fixed the first time, he'd fix it again at no charge. Tommy totally stands behind his work, so much so that this little ol' Hawk found its way into the Quail show at Pebble Beach week this year! I would not give them 1 star. Tommy who seems like a nice southern gentleman, had my 1953 Chevy Pick up for 3 weeks, he was supposed to put a new front end on, install engine and transmission. Nothing was done complete. The engine was mounted too high, and crooked. The new motor mounts were only welded 30% of complete. The Transmission tunnel he "built" looked like a 3rd grader installed. The engine had a new AC pump that was installed incorrectly by him. I gave the shop over $10k for labor alone, I was charged 5 hours for "cleaning an engine" (the engine was not clean at all. The place i believe was once good, Daryl and Jay and Carol ( who supposedly manage the place) are absolutely clueless when it comes to cars, Tommy writes checks with his mouth his rear end cannot cover. They are constantly asking for more money, as I stated $10k for 3-4 weeks of subpar work. I am now having to have all of Tommy's work redone correctly. Buyer beware they in my opinion are going thru some major money issues. Stay away stay very far away. read more

I give this shop 5 stars but wish that I could give it more. My 1928 FB President was pulled from the woods up in Oregon and brought down to Long Beach. GM and owner Tommy took the car completely apart, down to the frame and restored, rebuilt and refinished all of the original parts as if it just came off the assembly line. The care and thoughtfulness in even choosing the correct wood to replace damaged/worn pieces of the shell was impressive. I'm very picky and I couldn't be happier with the fit and finish of everything on this car. I shopped around and few shops in the country know pre and post war Studebakers like this shop does and can rebuild them as new. They also do tons of cool custom work on other older cars.
