"You can't leave here until you try the Strudel" I'm told. I enter "steak" into Yelp and Student Prince comes up in my search. I start reading about this spot, Student Prince is an authentic German restaurant. I speak fluent beer so my choice is now made up. I had a big lunch so I figured I'd drink a pint of good German beer and a small plate before I'm on my way. Yeah right! My waitress was fantastic, she was suggesting all these great dishes but I didn't have the room. I started with a tap beer and Jägerschnitzel (Schnitzel with Mushroom Gravy, my favorite) the dish came with two sides, sauerkraut and spaetzle. The Jägerschnitzel is a big cutlet, there is a lot of food on my plate. I take a bite of Jägerschnitzel along with some sauerkraut. I take it slow and I was able to knock it all out. The Jägerschnitzel was very good, this is a fantastic spot. The restaurant feels very authentic, from the booths to the bar, they did a great job in recreating a German pub. My waitress kept coming over to make sure I'm ok. She told me to make some room because the Strudel shouldn't be missed. I'm told it's also topped with vanilla ice cream. Another great dish and highly recommended. Student Prince, I don't get the name. I'm glad I found this spot on Yelp. If you want a great German restaurant, Student Prince is a must. read more

Went on a Saturday for lunch to get the "game month" special. Sat in the bar area and our waitress was very helpful and attentive. A wide beer selection including non-alcoholic. For my main I had the Cornish Hen in a cream sauce. The meat was crispy and the cream sauce flavorful. For dessert I shared the apple strudel which was a very healthy serving. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. Although we had a reservation, we probably could have walked right in and gotten seated immediatly. The dining room and bar area are both very attractive with dark woodwork, and we were seated right next to a gorgeous stained glass window. Our server was friendly, knowledgable, and very helpful in telling us what the top menu items are since it was our first time visiting The Student Prince. To start, we ordered the Fried Camembert and the potato pancakes. Both were really good and we would order them again. For my entree, I ordered Paprika schnitzel with spatzle and pan fried potatoes. Yum! It was excellent and the serving size was large enough for left overs. My friend ordered a burger, and although I scoffed at him for not trying something German, his burger did look amazing. We had previously been to a different German restaurant in a nearby town, but we much preferred The Student Prince and will look forward to visiting again when we are back in Springfield. read more

Loved our time at Student Prince looking at the German decor throughout the restaurant and sitting at the bar. The drinks were poured perfectly from the bartender with the Olympics playing on the tv. My burger was perfectly seasoned and I could taste every flavor from the mushrooms to the oozy egg on top. The pretzel bun is a nice bonus on top of everything else and just puts this restaurant above all else. The delicious chicken sliders are sold individually so you can have as many as you'd like! The fresh red potato skins in the mashed potatoes made us feel at home with sense of the home cooked meal. Absolutely delish! read more

A little disappointing based on my pasts visits years ago. The Sauerbraten I ordered, I believe, was an eye of the round cut rather than a customery, chuck or Rump Roast which would have been infinitely more flavorful than the eye round. Meat was tender but lacking in flavor and very dry. Spätzle while not bad, I don't think it was made fresh, might have been a frozen product. Nothing wrong with frozen products but fresh is best when doing dumplings. Can't say I picked up on the gingersnap flavor in the gravy either. Rotkohl was very good, however; the real standout was the Sticky Pudding it was phenomenal! Service was good; the ambiance is exceptional, for $91 incl. tip I would have expected more. read more

The dining experience here is outstanding. Food is delicious, service is friendly and attentive, and I love the atmosphere. My last 2 visits I've had the schnitzel, and the sausage plate. You get a crazy amount of food in each order. I took leftovers back with me after both visits. Decent selection of wine, and an abundance of beers. Both times my servers were beyond attentive even though during my first visit, the bar had a private event happening and the atmosphere was insane, I feared I would never get waited on, but was greeted within minutes. The second visit I was able to sit at the bar after lunch and before dinner, so it was very quiet. I believe the bartender's name was Jennifer. She was awesome. German specific menu created some limitations for diners not ready for ethnic food, and diners are made aware of the menu beforehand. The Sauerbraten, which should be any German Restaurant's bread and butter in my opinion, was both tender and very dry. The gravy didn't have even a hint of a sour zing like one would expect with a good sauerbraten. Very disappointing for a German restaurant. The spätzle was cooked nice but way too salty. I couldn't eat it. My compainion said it was okay, but agreed it was over salted. The red cabbage, well can't go wrong there, tasted like a good quality out of the jar red cabbage. On a very hot day went for dinner -- the schnitzel with home fries and sauerkraut is authentic, absolutely adore the cucumber salad! Enjoyed a signature cocktail for dessert. I'd heard about the Student Prince but always decided to go someplace else-- it felt austere and a bit intimidating to me. After a recent dentist appointment with no Novocain involved I parked at the railroad station, walked over and gave it a try. They sat me in a cozy booth and the waiter, Matthew, was polite, prompt and attentive. I ordered a tuna melt and salad, both quite good, and was about to decline dessert when Matthew mentioned Indian pudding. "You have Indian pudding?" I asked. "Yes," he said, and brought me a dessert bowl filled with this warm old-time dessert made primarily of cornmeal, molasses and eggs, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. I've been back three times since and it's always the same high standard whether the server is Matthew, Ella, Stephanie or Michael. The Student Prince is a product of a world that doesn't exist anymore. It's a Valiant hold out to when restaurants embraced unique identities. From when you walk in and you see the walls lined with one of the most Impressive collection of beer steins and a keen eve can spot here and there the infamous Das Boot! From Beer Fest. The food is hearty and rich. The menu leaves you feeling satisfied and full the wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable of German cuisine. They know their dishes and they know the subtle differences between the schnitzels and the brats. I had the Pork Shank with a side Caesar. Since I am diabetic. The pork was tender well seasoned was covered in a rich brown gravy. Their Caesar was perfect romaine, Caesar dressing, croutons parm cheese and bacon... a nice twist giving a nice salty savory flavor to the salad. My wife Sauerbraten and it was tender and flavorful. The spatle is also great. Overall it was a great dinner paired with a nice white wine and a Jack and Diet Coke for myself. Very good meal made great by our amazing and hilarious waiter, Jeff who interacted and cajoled our son; it won't be a meal we'll ever forget. We had a giant soft pretzel to start, accompanied by beer sauce (ok) and honey mustard (great). Entrees included a burger, chicken schnitzel and braised pork shank. It is my fault for coming to a German restaurant and ordering a burger. I was looking for a burger, and there really wasn't a lot open mid day during the week. At least not the day I was here. Student Prince was near my hotel and the reviews were good. Didn't find much about the burger, but they had two on their lunch menu, so thought it would be a good option. I ordered their Haus Cheeseburger sans the garlic aioli and asked for mustard instead. I also went with the tots instead of fries. It came out and looked very impressive. The tots were great. In my opinion, tots are hard to beat. The burger was disappointing. It had caramelized onion on it, that were completely unseasoned, the burger patty was greatly under seasoned, the bacon was sparse and SO thin that it added absolutely nothing to the overall sandwich. I ordered the burger medium and though it was technically correct, it was over cooked on one side and under on the other. The cheddar cheese was placed on the undercooked side and wouldn't melt. Luckily I could pull it away and add some salt to the meat to give it a little something. The service was really friendly and they had tables set up outside which was nice. The weather was perfect to enjoy the outdoors and it was really dark inside. I have coworkers who love this place...but they go on about the German food. So, don't be like me and order the burger. read more

Went in a couple weeks ago following Thanksgiving for lunch, ate at the bar with a friend. The restaurant was on a limited menu for Christmas (this wasn't explained to us, but that's OK) but was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Definitely worth going to for that reason. We both had the same thing right off of the menu, two orders of Jager schnitzel, potato pancakes, and a couple beers. The food was great, no complaints there, and it came out pretty quickly. We didn't ask for too much, and were not demanding. My only issue was with service. Our bartender was a 30s male, tattoos, hipster-y. There was an older couple at the corner of the bar that had the majority of his attention. Besides complaining about earlier business (he said he had to make too many specialty drinks), he made it clear to the bar that these two on the corner were regulars, and they were worthy of extras, such as a double serving of their chauvinette (ice cream liquor drink). When we ordered one to split he made it clear that ours would not look like theirs because they are "regulars". Didn't say goodbye or thank you to us, just ran the check and that was it. That's fine that you give your regulars a bit extra service but don't make this known to everyone else at the bar. We left feeling a bit deflated and underwhelmed. read more

Went for lunch the other day at the Student Prince. The food was excellent. They have a luncheon special for $23.99. We opted for that and I had a cup of Goulash which was excellent. Next I had the Paprika schnitzel, you could have chicken , pork or veal. I had the pork and finally dessert , Apple strudel. There was not one complaint. The service was excellent and our waiter couldn't have been more helpful. The restaurant was clean, and inviting. The only complaint was the cost of the drinks. 16.50 for a Lemon Drop was rather high. So yes I will return but minus the drink. read more

Step into history. If a restaurant could talk I'd want to hear what this one has to say the most. The decor on the walls, on the ceiling and in the cabinets were mesmerizing. Honestly they should give tours of the place. Valet parking was a breeze, the guys were really helpful, parking would be daunting.
