She did my "Zooey Deschanel" bangs for a few years and helped me make the transition to grow them out and try something new. I had never colored my hair, and I decided to take the leap. I love love love the way Laura cuts my extensions to blend with my natural hair... you would never think i have extensions. I got a model cut from Studio 486. My friend referred me to one of her friends who was going to style my hair at the studio. My friend told me it was a cut and color as I said those were the only stipulations in which I would do it under. I get there and there was a delay in getting us started which concerned me knowing that model cuts can take a long time to do. I repeatedly told the girl over text, I have to be out by 2:30 PM. When the girl started working on my hair she told me there was no color. I would have not done this cut had I known that but, at that point, figured, fine, I'm here, I already took the time off of work, etc. (FYI- this was not their fault but, my friends for not communicating the mishap with me.) Little did I know, the owner gave me one of snobbiest, most pretentious, Newport/Orange County like experiences ever. SO rude. I was considering coming back if I liked the cut but no way, dude. They kept looking at my hair with concern because they knew the stylist had messed it up quite a bit. I have a huge chunk of hair in the back of my head that feels open. Meanwhile, I asked her to keep it as long as she could since it was a bob model. Well, to my dismay, once she was finished it was totally lopsided, so they had to cut again and shorter, of course. They started texturizing it after the lopsidedness and again it became shorter and shorter. Why not just shave me bald here?! The owner literally acted like "What? You're getting a free haircut." Just so you know, treat your models like you would the customer. The whole point of a model is PRACTICE. If this is the "la-di-da" service I would get coming in as a regular, I would dare never to step back in. Plus, the model are people in the community with a word of mouth to say. I hope it was a favor for your "assistant" at the very least because this is the SHORTEST haircut I've ever had. Shorter than the pictures you sent my friend. Hope she learned a few things as well as yourself. Nothing makes a customer happy than being kind and leaving the ego behind you. P.S. I make enough to get my hair done at a nice place. I was debating between a 3 or 4 star. I bought a Groupon for a wax with Lindsay a couple weeks ago. The online appointment scheduling is kind of confusing. You need to register and "request" an appointment then they confirm and you receive an email. My wax with Lindsay was a good experience, she's very friendly and makes you feel comfortable. She explained the hair cycle process and what type of wax was used. She is a fast waxer. I was in and out within 10 minutes. However, the growth was back within a few days because the hair broke from just below the surface and wasn't grabbed from the follicle. I was a little disappointed. I guess I'll just have to wait another few weeks before getting waxed again. read more

It was my first time to Studio 486, which is a cute salon that welcomes you with friendly staff and decor that makes you feel like you've walked into the spa. Although the parking is somewhat limited directly in front of the salon, the surrounding neighborhood seems to have plenty of space. It was, however, not my first time visiting Hailey. I've been following Hailey around Orange County since 2009 for colors and cuts and just plain good conversation! I have trust issues when it comes to hairstylists, but she's had my trust 100% from the first time I've met with her. She takes the time to listen to exactly what I want, offer her suggestions (even if it means spending more than 10 minutes helping me decide what color to dye my hair!), and ultimately always leaves me walking away feeling beautiful and happy. I refuse to go to anyone else, even after living in Manhattan for over a year. She's always on my list of people to visit when I go back to CA and I never regret it. I recommend her to everyone I know and everyone only has good things to say. I know she also does lashes and I've never gotten them done, but if I ever did, I know she'd be the one I go to. My recommendation: Go to Hailey; she'll rock your world. read more

I just moved to Newport from San Diego, and of course was reluctant to get my hair cut by a new hairdresser (as many women are once they get comfortable with the same person)! However, Richelle is artistically talented, professional, and so intuitive to her clients' desired results and needs. She listened, reassured me, and made me feel so comfortable. She is also so sweet, easy to talk to, and grounded. She successfully integrated her own expertise with my input and did so with patience and grace. I have what some hair stylists would consider to be "difficult hair". However, for the first time in my whole history of getting my hair cut and styled, Richelle beautifully styled in exactly the way I wanted without me even having to tell her. You know you have found a gem of a hair stylist when you can just sit back and let them do their job because they have that kind of special intuition. Studio 486 is clean, cute, and has such a sweet staff! They have a little snack area up front with pretzels and M&Ms as well as coffee and tea. I love that! I went in for a cut and color with Stephanie and she did an excellent job. She listened to what I wanted and told me exactly what she was doing. I always appreciate when a stylist will explain what certain processes do to the hair. I left feeling very pleased with my color and fresh cut! Found a Groupon deal for a Brazilian wax and read really good Yelp reviews about Lindsay. All of those reviews were correct. My experience with Lindsay was definitely 5 stars! She talked to me the whole time, prepared me for sensitive spots, and gave me helpful tips to prevent ingrown hairs. I will definitely be coming back to Lindsay, even without the Groupon. Also, the ambiance of the room was relaxing (smells of lavender and the wax had lavender in it as well). She uses soft wax with clothe strips, making it WAY less painful than my previous waxes and she was very quick (about 10 min). read more

This review is for Lindsay who does waxing and spray tans. What can I say- Lindsay is awesome! She is sweet, funny and made me feel very comfortable for my very first (naked) spray tan!! The whole process was easier than I thought it would be. It only took about 5-10 minutes and Lindsay directs and positions you so that you get the best and most even tan possible- she can also tailor it to light or dark- I am going to Vegas so I went dark- and I love it!!! I was very surprised that the tanning spray had no scent at all- I was expecting to be blown in the face by toxins to be honest- but this was not the case at all thank God!! I will definitely be back to be sprayed by Lindsay again and would highly recommend her services!!! read more

My son is a type one diabetic. Keeping him safe and healthy can be a bit stressful . . Let's face it, I am not a pancreas, i am human. Often-with type 1 diabetes-illness really complicates life. Often- ketones develop from very high stubborn blood sugar levels caused by the stress on the body from the illness. Treatment requires extra vigilant care, extra pokes, extra insulin... extra TLC.. extra everything. Add in a new pump (we are LOOPING! #wearenotwaiting), retraining for said pump and well it's A LOT. Anyway, after being away from school sick, Talan decided he was ready to go back today. I was so thankful because i had a hair appointment booked for a month that i was very excited to go to. Unfortunately, early in the day I noticed his blood sugar was high- it wouldn't come down. I called him and he wasn't feeling like himself and reluctantly he wanted to come home (totally expected). Talan had large ketones-it's complicated to explain but basically in a person with type 1, ketones can buy you a ticket to the ICU quickly if not treated properly. It requires giving frequent doses of insulin and careful monitoring to clear the body of said ketones.. Anyway- after I picked Talan up we started his increased insulin doses and went to grab lunch. Well, because he requires careful watching of blood sugars, I decided to bring him with me to my coveted hair salon appointment (don't worry, i didn't drag him..he said he was feeling ok to go) When I got to my appointment the nice receptionist called me over to whisper that my son was not allowed to be in the salon. She repeatedly apologized that she has to follow the rules but she wasn't allowed to let him stay. Well, the owner, who was at the salon at the time, would surely understand my predicament... right? NO- the owner of the salon kicked us out! Yes- no children allowed, period, no exceptions under any circumstance. Now for the record- I've been going to this salon for 5 years and do know about the policy. I've never asked for an exception to be made (which is a miracle as far as I'm concerned with 4 kids!), but, I thought, today being extenuating circumstances, coupled with Talan being an older child and not being a rambunctious kid an exception wouldn't be an unreasonable ask. Especially for a loyal customer of more than 5 years. Boy was I wrong. Despite the salon being nearly empty, the owner of @studio486 came out wagging her finger at me (literally) telling me that the policy is stated on the answering machine and there would be NO exceptions. i would have to reschedule my appointment. To which, I TRIED to explain what was going on with Talan and his care- that I had brought his homework and his lunch and that he would sit quietly while i was getting my hair done. I TRIED to explain that i had a special party for the weekend and really wanted to look my best.. I pointed out the salon was nearly empty, the waiting room had no one else in it, and he could sit and work quietly... to which she then proceeded to get more angry because I was trying to ask for an exception and pointing out he wouldn't bother anyone and basically very rudely kicked us out of the salon. I kept my calm the best I could (if you know me you might be laughing at that statement- but it's been a really tough week) and i walked out with tears in my eyes. I have NEVER seen an such unprofessional, entitled, business owner with such a blatant disregard for a loyal customer. Her condescending tone and manner lacked empathy, lacked human kindness, understanding, and flexibility. I mean- it's not like I was about to let my two year old run loose wiping boogers on people. We're talking about a 11 year old boy... with homework and his favorite salad in hand. Her complete lack of apathy for the situation, the stylists that pay her for the rented spaces in the salon, and for the momma who just needs her hair done so desperately that she brought her --needs extra eyes on him medically fragile kid- with her- was disgraceful. I couldn't believe that she could be so inflexible and rude.. So I'm writing all of this to tell everyone to spend their money elsewhere. She doesn't deserve dime. She treated a loyal customer like crap and I highly doubt that she gives a hoot about what she did or the way it made me and my son feel today. I mean, did she think he wasn't smart enough to know when I asked him to go sit in the car that he was unwelcome? Did she at all think, wow this kid might be having a really tough time and just need to be hangin out with his mom right now? Or how about how he felt when he felt he had to apologize to me when we got in the car for making me miss my appointment and feels guilty that he needed to be with me because he has "stupid diabetes"? All I can say is we will NEVER spend money Studio486 again, and hopefully neither will any of you. All of this said the stylist that was going to do my hair handled the tough situation with such grace, and for that i am so grateful. read more

I'm usually left with a ton of wax still stuck on me and not satisfied with the results, even after they go through with tweezers for the price I just paid! Best Blow Out In Newport Beach! Heck! Best Blow Out In Costa Mesa Too! I often need a blow out or touch up so I needed to find someone close whom I could count on when I moved to South County. I was lucky to have found Kara Dilworth a while ago because she does a great job managing my curly hair! I've done high end salons and blow bars but until I found Kara it was pretty much hit or miss. I have followed her to Studio 486 and I am thrilled, now she is just down the hill from my home! Her blow dry skills are excellent and she really knows her products, using just the right amount to keep my hair sleek and shiny! She always manages to give my hair the right amount of sleekness and fullness that gets attention! She goes out of her way to fit me in even at the last minute and everyone at the salon is so friendly and accommodating. You should also know that she is a great colorist too! I have plenty of grey coming in and need to have the roots done often, I also have a rather involved ombre look with dark roots and reddish low lights on the ends. There are three or more colors involved. I get compliments on my hair color all the time. If you want a fantastic colorist, talk to Kara, she has some great ideas! Lindsay is awesome!!! I've had a Brazilian wax 2 other times in my life, and both times were super awkward and expensive. Lindsay is very professional and fast. It hurts like a mother, but it's over before you know it. I found her on Groupon. She's got a great deal.. GET THE DEAL FOR 2 WAXES!!! I only bought 1 in fear of wasting my money on a shotty groupon deal (it's happened to me before with massages), but Lindsay is worth every penny! The salon is very clean and organized.
