Kelsey at Upper Hand Salon has some magic hands and not only do I leave every time with an amazing cut but her color is completely perfect. I took my 10 year old daughter to the 1800 Westheimer location. John was her stylist. This was our first experience with this salon. I was charged $65 for the haircut plus I left a $10 tip (I left the tip out of a sense of obligation, not because i was satisfied). My daughters hair would have been better if I had taken her to Supercuts and paid $25.00. The initial greeting by the receptionist was very disappointing. I was expecting a more "upscale" greeting considering the area was River Oaks. My appointment at the other location, 1905 Westheimer, was equally disappointing in regards to the initial greeting but I was more fortunate to have a competent and experienced stylist named Alex. I am very happy with the haircut but not satisfied with my overall experience. When you pay as much as I did for a haircut I expect a certain level of service beyond the initial haircut. I would recommend the 1905 Westheimer salon location with Alex but be prepared to be treated as if you are just another haircut.. I will probably not return to this establishment, nor would I recommend it to anyone that I like. read more

I had a more than wonderful experience at the Upper Hand Salon Hyde Park with Phuong. The atmosphere was very chic and sophisticated, the ladies are all very professional and polite as I was often asked if I were comfortable or if I needed a drink. Phuong is a master at what she does, she took my bland and dried up hair and transformed it into a piece of art full of dimension. I felt as if the new hairdo transformed me and brought more confidence to myself! I couldn't thank her enough for her expertise and her time. I will definitely be going back with Phuong for my next session. elisa is an artist and made me so confident with my hair!!! she packed some major highlights in. not only did i love it then, but 5 months later it STILL looks amazing. my hair never tends to hold color well. whether it be brown, red, blonde or silver- it always fades. im not sure what elisa was able to do, but my hair still looks vibrant and incredible. not only is she amazing with color and highlights, but she is super personable. i was immediately able to make a friend with her and felt so comfortable from the get go. there was no awkwardness. she is such a people person. also, the salon is beautiful. very clean and everyone is so nice. i am excited to go back soon to get freshened up! read more

I came prepared with a few pictures of what I was trying to achieve and Mary gave a thorough consult. Ended up paying $300 for a "Partial Balayage" which turned out to be barely noticeable highlights. The front desk staff are exactly as one reviewer put it "arrogant and snobbish". I would also expect to not leave with color dye still on either side of my face for paying as much as I did. Also the stylist tried "curling" my hair with a flat iron which fried my hair and looked awful. The price here is ridiculous for the poor quality you get. Will not return. Would not recommend. I see John for blonde hair and he does really well at making me blonde but keeping my hair healthy. You can tel the products used here are higher end and they are all well trained. This is my stylist, Megan Hudgin's new salon. While I have yet to visit her at the new locale, Megan has been an actual Godsend for my hair. I'm a very cool brunette, and for whatever reason, no one--and I do mean no one--has been able to color it without turning it pitch black besides her. She's also super open to my pain in the butt, on-a-whim requests, which are many--I'll go from a brown and blonde ombré to auburn to straight brunette and back again. Mellanie at Upper Hand in Hyde Park fixed my hair (after a horrible experience by someone else at a different salon) and I couldn't be happier! A little insight into my situation: My hair was an overbleached balayage (I asked for darker brunette balayage), it was blonde and it looked orange. This bad color job was done by a stylist in Houston who claims to be "One of the best in Houston". I was there from 5 pm to 10:30pm. And she charged me about $400! I felt robbed. Worst experience ever. Thank God I found Mellanie, she knew exactly what I wanted and knew exactly what to do. My hair came out just as I imagined it would. She's so good about listening to the client and what the client wants. I've been to stylists before who listen to what you want but you end up with something totally different. That did NOT happen with Mellanie. She hears you and she delivers exactly that! She educated me on my hair and what my hair needs and how to care for it. I can't say enough great things about her. I really wanted to like this place. After seeing how gorgeous the salon was and following Melannie on Instagram, I loved her work! But, I've had 3 sessions and that was enough for me to realize this salon takes complete advantage of their clients! I booked an appt for partial balayage in which I had previously done with Melannie as well, just wanted a touch up. Melannie insisted I do high/low lights and forced me to get long layers saying "otherwise I'm coloring your hair for nothing." only to upsell me since no matter what hair cut you get her set price is $90 on top of color charge. First session my hair was down to my waist and jet black. I did a blunt cut to my shoulders and had full balayage done. Was charged $270 which was no surprise considering the work that had been done. Final session my hair is to my bra and still has the balayage Melannie had done 5 months previously. Melannie urged high/low lights instead of balayage and recommended nicely (at first) long layers and I really wanted to keep my length so I said no. Throughout the 4 hour session she was adamant that I get the layers and finally exhaled loudly and said "you need them, your hair is going to look flat!" I finally gave in not realizing for the 2 layers she gave me I would get charged $90 extra on top of the $250 hair coloring (that doesn't make sense) I looked up prices on their website and I get the + sign means they are subject to change but the gap from $105 to $250??? The day of I thought the price was crazy but just handed over my cc since I was in a rush. Big mistake! 3 days later I sent Melannie a direct message on Instagram nicely asking for a price breakdown. She was extremely defensive when I asked. Only replied with "Please call the salon for price breakdown" following "Also if you had a problem with the price you should have said something the day of" next "Not sure what to say here" and finally "if you have a problem you can talk to my manager." The stylist receive 70% commission of total session, which is why they scam/upsell you for haircuts, blowouts and hair products. I was crying and I walked out with wet hair and was shaking when I went to my car. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. I called the owner of the salon and she asked me if I wanted another stylist and Kaitlin did my hair for a while and she was wonderful. She fix all of Logan's mess, and fix every band Logan left in my hair. These stylist are very stuck up and I come to find out that more of them leave than stay. They are also extremely OVER PRICED. The first time I came my hair was a disaster from another Salon and Mary worked her magic, performed a color correction and made my hair beautiful!! How did I get so lucky ? My second appointment was for a toner and again Mary was awesome, so professional, her vision and suggestions for your hair are always on point. First, I spent $75+ before tip for a simple haircut/trim. I felt it was way overpriced for less than an hour in-and-out of the salon, but returned 2 weeks later for single-tone highlights. I brought photos and was looking for a cherry-red tone. After 5 hours in the chair I had orange highlights which set me back $230+ before tip. (Everyone is very nice and professional.) I was told that this was the closest my hair color would get to a change and that I would need to come back for additional treatments every 5-6 weeks to get my hair to the ideal color. (Uhhh but how can I afford that?!) After 2 washes with pricy purple shampoo and conditioner, they turned a bright brassy orange. Pumpkin style. The look at the salon wasn't what my goal was, but I could deal. However these bright orange highlights are just bad. I called the salon and asked for a follow-up toner session and was told it $60+. (No thanks!) I'm also now on month 2 of waiting for phone call about a product being available to purchase but I don't think I'll ever get that call. $300 before tip for very generic hair cut + hugely disappointing single tone highlight -- be sure to ASK in advance how much your services will cost. I was shocked that the (shoddy, to be honest) highlights cost $230 and then I was asked to pay extra for what my friends agree should be color correction. Ugh, oh well. Buyer's remorse.
