Not much in the way of ambience when it comes to dining at Sub-base Sandwich Shoppe but I enjoyed my experience and as many know, love holes-in-the-wall. After class one day, I figured that I would finally stop by. I love good doughnuts and sandwiches can float my boat. I walked in and noticed that no one else was there. To give you some context, it was approximately 1:30 pm on a weekday. Probably Tuesday or Thursday, since that's when I have class this semester. Anyway, I perused the menu and admit that I probably have the blandest sandwich preferences. I got a turkey with pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, and Italian dressing on wheat. I asked for it to be toasted, as the chilliness of the day had my body wanting something warm to eat. After I ordered my sandwich at the registered, I looked at the wall of doughnuts. Not many remained, which I expected, given the hour I had arrived. I asked the older woman which one she recommended and she must have guessed that since I am Asian that I wouldn't want something too sweet. I agreed that, at least for this round, I wasn't in the mood for anything too tooth-aching. She recommended the the sour cream cake doughnut and also mentioned what her favorite one was (I think cinnamon? Sorry, I can't remember). I went with the sour cream cake, but was intrigued by the Boston creme and apple fritters. Those will be tried on another visit, for sure. Once I paid in cash (they charge a minimal fee if you use your card, something like $0.50, but don't quote me), I sat down and watched whatever was on the TV to pass the time. After 5-7 minutes, my sandwich came out. Now I had the doughnut with me and if I had been alone, it would have been gone by the time the sandwich made its way to me but since I was honestly concerned about being judged (haha!), I held together my composure. It was a good move though, as the sandwich hit the spot, not being anything completely mind-blowing (but what could have I wanted for what I ordered?). On my drive home, I devoured my doughnut and was thoroughly pleased that even buying something in the afternoon, the taste was still fresh and the cake doughnut had that ever-so-slight crispy exterior that cake doughnuts should have. Friendly service and lots of seating, if you want to park it while you grub. As already stated, don't expect to fall in love with your surroundings, but for a casual lunch, ain't nothing wrong with that. read more

I feel bad giving this place a 2 because the female cashier which I assume is the owner is super sweet and polite. I'm giving this place a 2 because the philly cheesesteeak game was probably the weakest I've ever had. There was very little meat and loaded mostly with lettuce. The bread wasn't fresh or even warm. Bread was cold. Philly cheesesteak should be meaty, warm and toasty altogether. I tried the cinnamon twix. Cashier gave it to me as is when I asked for it. I then asked her to please warm it up as it was at room temperature and I like my pastries warm. The cinnamon twix was good but I've had better. I was heading to the DeKalb animal shelter for my foster dog and drove by this place and the name caught my eye. I had to check it on yelp first and figured i would swing in. It is definitely a little seedy outside in a random plaza that is old, never ruining that this place had someone good to offer inside. I walked in to a bunch of tables and metal chairs(prob from the 70's) and then I saw the donuts on the left of the shop. They advertise sandwiches and donuts, I only tried the donuts this visit. Two older Viet ladies were behind the counter and quickly helped me choose my donuts, it cost me around $7 for 6 donuts and a cinnamon roll. When I got home my family tore into the bag and loved each one. The sour cream were crunchy outside with a soft center, the cinnamon roll was super fresh and good. My husband and daughter loves the blueberry the best which isn't the case for blueberry at any other donut shop. Come try them out and don't be intimidated by the outdated storefront or decor. Here's the thing. Customer service matters to me. The donuts are fine. Marginally better than Dunkin Donuts. But the customer service is so bad and aggressively rude that it isn't worth it. Dandy Donuts has the best donuts! If you can get there early, try their donut holes. They sell out early, but for good reason -- warm and pillowy, they are easily the best donut holes I've ever had. Taking into consideration the impact that the coronavirus had on the culinary industry, I have to say that this quaint yet vibrant sandwich/ donut shop has pulled through to maintain excellent quality, service and cleanliness. Walking in, I seemed to be greeted with almost a surprised look as if I weren't expected to be here(laughingly). However the level of humility and customer service received was beyond my expectations. Because they aren't your typical flashy, mainstream and gaudy sandwich shop it may send many to pass them, not knowing this humble gem waiting in the shadows of Chamblee. No, I'm not being paid nor am I coerced into writing this review. I'm not part owner nor do I have any investment in this restaurant any more than purchasing and delicious and reasonably priced sub, drink and chips. Now saying that let me say that 5 stars is near impossible to obtain in my opinion and should be done with more tact and reservation. The few issues I have with this shop is none other than it looks as though the shop may be owned by first time restaurant owners only by the way the tables are set and the fact that some of their "back stock " is in the dining area. They also have a lot of plants out there as well, but it just adds to the lesser "qualms" I mentioned earlier in this review. I hear it wherever we go. "Can we look for doughnuts?" My reply we can but they will suck. That was true until we found this place. Oh my just like LA, not Lower Alabama you twit, real honest Hollywood and movie stars LA they have Asian ladies making doughnuts. The quest for the buttermilk bar was finally fulfilled. Not a 100% substitute for an LA doughnut shop but a good emergency buttermilk bar supplier. It gives 5 because Atlanta doughnuts suck. The next person who mentions Revolution gets my thumb second knuckle deep in their eye socket. Get here early, get a buttermilk bar, an apple fritter, and a glass of milk. Seriously get milk though the coffee here isn't bad but just get the damn milk I tell you. The place is clean, friendly and a must visit. If you need a real doughnut shop fix this is the place. This morning my husband woke up craving homemade cake donuts. "Do you want to drive down to Sublime?" I asked him. "No..." he sighed. So we searched the web for "Donuts" and discovered this place was only 10 minutes from our house! We immediately hopped in the car and scooted to 285 down to Chamblee-Dunwoody. Don't drive too fast or y'all will miss this place. It's tucked in a shopping center across the street from a school. On a Sunday morning at 11 a.m. the parking lot was empty because all the good folks were still in church and us lushes were hungover and craving donuts. This place is technically "Dandy Donuts" along with being "Sub Base". And the restaurant is split down the middle with donuts on the left and a sandwich bar with a grill on the other side. When we walked, we found an elderly woman waiting at the counter with shelves of donuts stacked behind her. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of all that sweet, carb goodness. I had 3 donuts and they all rocked my face off: 1. Chocolate Frosted - this fudge-topped cake donut was one of the best I've ever had. 2. Buttermilk - tasted like a donut made love to a biscuit in a bagful of sugar. 3. Raspberry - donut infused with the same raspberry filling used for crepes. Much to my pleasant surprise, the coffee here was also really good. And only $1.89 for a large! Take that Dunkin Donuts! A dozen donuts plus 2 coffees and a juice was only $14 with tax. Now that's a sweet deal! I definitely want to venture back to try the sandwiches at some point. And maybe I'll start working out more during the week so I can have more Dandy Donuts. read more

Definitely 5 stars for the donuts. Our family has been coming to Dandy Donuts for years! Their donuts can't be beat and are a must-try. The same Cambodian family has owned this shop for years. They are kind, hard-working folks that put out a consistently fresh and delicious line of donuts as well as croissants and apple fritters their customers love. Subs are also good. I notice they've added a new low-price lunch special of hot dog, chips and drink. The surroundings are definitely "hole-in-the-wall", but go and try the donuts. read more

I'm still licking my lips from their tasty donuts! I've heard of this place by the name Dandy Donuts (Title is actually Sub-Base and Dandy Donuts). It is in Chamblee directly across from Chamblee High school. This part of Chamblee is retro but right off Peachtree Rd/Peachtree Industrial. I bought 3 donuts. Honey dipped (glaze), Raspberry filled and apple something. The raspberry filled was average, the donut part was soft and tasted good but the filling was the type from chain donut places (thumbs down). The honey dipped and apple were great though! Soft, fresh, large and delicious! Their prices are great! I got those 3 donuts for $2.50! I checked the prices of several items, for future visits. Donut holes are one dozen for $1.95 and two dozen for $2.95. They are 1 1/2 - 2 inches big. The shop is a nice size but nothing special. You can tell they have not updated the interior in a few decades. Clean though. I will go back here! Ain't that always the way. We used to order doughnuts ahead of time to be picked up. The last time we tried to do this, my husband got there and they hadn't even bothered to box up the doughnuts for us. Of course, by then they were out of everything. After being mad for several months and avoiding the place, we finally decided to try again this morning. I called and asked if we could order doughnuts to be boxed up now and picked up later. Good little stop here for some donuts and croissants! Atmosphere - not the prettiest of places. Children's toys are scattered throughout the shop. Place is kind of an ameba of tables and chairs. Not really the most inviting place to stay and eat, but typically I just go in get my order to go and leave. Donuts - massively underrated among other donut shops in the area who use gimmicky toppings to bring you in. If you want a traditional yeast chocolate glazed donut, look not further. They have better donut holes than Dunkin, especially the plain yeast glazed. And the buttermilk bars are to die for! More donuts range ($1.75/dozen for holes or under $1 a donut). Croissants - you have to stop by early enough to grab one of these! The ham and cheese croissant is awesome! Ask to get it warmed up and it cannot be beat for $2.75. Dandy Donuts and Sub-Base is the best place I've found in the Atlanta area for light and fluffy glazed donuts, called "honey-dipped" here, that are fresh and fat as overstuffed pillows but so light they melt in your mouth. There are variations on this basic donut including a chocolate frosted, cream cheese filled, and Boston cream, which has chocolate frosting and a vanilla cream filling. There's also a cinnamon twist made with the same dough. If you want something heavier, they have cake style donuts that are crispy on the outside and dense on the inside. You won't find seasonal flavors, wacky colored frosting or gourmet flavor pairings on these donuts. But who seriously wants bacon and caramel and green St. Patrick's day frosting on their donuts? The tables are usually empty because most people get their stuff and go, but if you come on a Saturday morning you'll have to fight for a seat because the Donut Derelicts gather around 8:00 am, and most of them drive classic vehicles. I've seen everything from Model-Ts to Rolls Royces and even a refurbished 1960s Greyhound bus pull in. So if you like your glazed donut with a side of old cars, stop by this weekend and you won't be disappointed. read more
