I was super excited to try this place after hearing about the wood-fired ovens and the fact that they make Turkish pastries like borek and pogaca. Unfortunately I was thoroughly disappointed. We got there a couple minutes before they opened, and after we were let inside we were told the wait for fresh borek would be about 20-30 minutes depending on the ovens. This is totally fine, I know how temperamental wood fired ovens are. But 60-70 minutes into waiting there was still no borek in sight. Finally around the 90 minute mark we were able to get what we wanted, and it was nothing like a traditional borek. It was made like a hand pie, although the lamb filling was seasoned well and tasty the overall pastry was SO HORRIBLY GREASY. Borek is supposed to have some grease to it, but not to the point that it's slipping off of your hands. Oh and we never got to try the pogaca because two hours in, they still didn't have them ready. The Turkish tea was decent and the staff were quite nice, so the two stars are for that. Do not go to this place expecting Turkish pastries. It's more so an average Western bakery that tries to dabble in Turkish goods. read more

This place was highly recommended to me from various uber drivers and from my airbnb hosts. The place seemed pretty typical with their own decide that's special to their business. The ambiance is rrally laid back and it's perfect for someone that needs to do some work. I ordered a latte along with the pain au chocolate and a banana pudding. Of the two, my favorite was the pain au chocolate. It can be pretty messy when you bite into it because of the crumbs that fly off. It's very crispy and along with the chocolate taste, there's a hint of butter inside. The two flavors go hand in hand and make this pastry and MUST try. The bread pudding was decent. I've had various bread puddings in the past. To me, this one wasn't anything special. The latte was pretty good and tasted like the typical latte. My only thing and it's not major or anything, was that my latte didn't have a cool design like those seen in the various photos people have posted haha. Overall, I definitely recommend this place. Expect to pay $13-$15 a person if you get a drink and two items. read more

Unclear why anyone has given a poor review. I picked up a loaf of the classic, a sour cherry and pistachio pastry, and a cheese and salami pastry for lunch with the family. Before leaving I had a cup of the Turkish tea, it was well blended and nothing short of perfect. The loaf of bread we sliced thinly to make some gourmet sandwiches and it's flavor alone was enough for me. The rest was used at dinner to dip in oil and herbs which it was perfect for. My only complaint about the pastries is that I didn't buy more of them. The sour cherry surprised the picky eaters in my family with its light and sweet flavors. The savory salami and cheese was wonderful, we heated it up a bit to make it melty and there was a bit of a scrum for who would get the last bite. Unfortunate that this is the first time I've ventured here but I will not be staying away for long! read more

It was just an overall great experience going here. The wood-fire oven gives the environment a wonderful smell and feel. The service is very good. I went on a chilly autumn day, which is the perfect time to visit their location and just hang out, although I'm sure I will be back to visit during all seasons of the year. I had the fig and cheese croissant and it was easily one of the best things I've eaten in my life--flaky, buttery, not too sweet. MMMMMmmm. Thank goodness I don't live in Church Hill because damned if I wouldn't die a happy, yet impoverished and early death from eating nothing but pastries every day. After a long waiting period for Sub Rosa to reopen their doors, my wish has finally materialized. There is something magical about it, honestly. I enjoy coming in for my morning Lamplighter coffee that complements my buttery croissant. I commit a sin every time I eat a chocolate croissant...my derriere knows it. But, I love that I can work that off by walking just a few blocks to indulge myself with a read and a savory prosciutto, arugula, and mozz panini. Lastly, you can bet if you sit in that window seat long enough, you'll be exchanging words with a fellow denizen. So, if you are looking for a place to sit and relax and feel welcome, then you want to be at Sub Rosa. My experience can be summarized in three letters: WOW! This is exactly what I imagined a relaxing sunday breakfast/brunch should be. Small cozy shop at the corner of the street, filled with the scent of coffee and fresh baked goods, with a violinist playing in the background. I've only been to Sub Rosa once at my sister's suggestion, and I loved the chocolate almond croissant and spinach feta tart. The croissants here are humongous... almost twice the size of my face. It is also extremely flakey on the outside, filled with promised gooey chocolate and crispy, toasted almonds. The tart has artichoke (I think) on top, and that's not my favorite part... but it still tasted yummy! I wanted to try some other flavors of their tarts and quiche, but they were all sold out by the time we go to the store on Sunday around 12. Definitely, definitely, definitely will be back and try some more of their stuff. And I will go earlier! read more

Two words -- pastry excellence. Sub Rosa's baked goods are divine. The goods I've tried (thus far): 1. The fig and cheese twist: perfection. Super flaky crust twisted over a sweet (but not too sweet) fig jam and nutty flakes of manchego, all glistening under a very light glaze. You need to try it. This was absolutely my favorite one (though they were all freaking amazing). 2. The sour cherry and pistachio pastry: a dream. A little tangy from the dried cherries and a nice nutty pistachio crumble swirled in between soft cakey dough (think super elegant cinnaswirl bun). It's dusted with pistachio crumbs too. 3. The spring greens tart: outstanding. Imagine the stuffing of a spinach pie atop a crusty pie shell instead of phyllo. 4. The chocolate almond croissant: superb. A flaky croissant topped with toasted almonds and powdered sugar with a super gooey, rich, dark chocolate filling. This one is sinful. I went on a Sunday morning at around 10 and barely had to wait. By the time I left at like 10:30 there was a bit of a crowd. There are a few tables with chairs, a couple lounge chairs and a few stools -- so you can enjoy your pastries on the premises. The staff is not particularly friendly or warm but I don't care -- it's basically impossible for me to knock a star with how good the food is. Sub Rosa made better baked goods than I've had in Paris. Of course the cute guy whom you hired locked eyes with us so he knew to work it. Still it was savvy on your part to learn how to greet customers, look them in the eye, smile and be engaging. What a concept. So kudos to you The menu has grown and the price points, though the same, get the customer a more reasonable food item. We had coffee, a meat pastry and a tart. We liked them and told a few friends locally how the baked goods improved. The place is warm. The A/C is not sufficient given the ovens are proximal to the seating area. We imagine they will eventually redesign the business to balance the kitchen area with the need to provide a comfortable eating experience While the interior space is small, the view of the neighborhood is appreciated since this is our hood. It would be great if they could expand the dining area so perhaps the business owners can work with the property owners on a suitable agreement to grow the business We want to see our local neighborhood businesses grow but they need to be welcoming, friendly, inviting and provide a decent product. We don't like to travel to the other regions of RVA because our hub is the epicenter. So lets all work together to make Union Hill / Church Hill a place that rivals South Beach without the high price points and divas Andiamo! read more

I have been wanting to check this place out for a few weeks and a sunny Sunday morning walk seemed like a great idea! This place lived up to the hype I have been hearing and then some! A friendly greeting when we walked in and my favorite new method of payment - iPad with a square and we had placed our orders. The interior is bright and sunny with tables, bench seating with smaller tables and a bar with stools looking out an awesome curved front window. Now on to the food! I had a chocolate croissant and my hubby Dan H. had the almond one. I wanted to try the salami and cheese one but I only have one stomach :( These were hands down the best croissants I have had since a trip to France a few years ago. Flaky on the outside with a nice buttery soft flavor in the middle. The chocolate was perfect - not too sweet. The almond was also the perfect amount of flavor. Also the complaint of the pastries being too small is crazy - they were huge! I can't wait to go back and try their bread plate with warm bread, goat cheese, honey and black pepper. J'adore Sub Rosa! Their baked anything is delicious! The crossaints are flaky, warm and are the best ones I've had in my life. Their coffees are strong which isn't my liking but it's no big deal. Love this place! Their selection of pastry and bread is top notch. I've been here twice and have gotten various croissant rolls and each time they have been great. The pastries are light, airy, and buttery with a nice oven char on them to create a crisp crust. The two times I've been, I did not see an almond croissant offering which I hope they will consider offering more often as it is my ultimate favorite pastry. Two pastries and two coffees will run you about $17+ so it's a bit on the pricey side. I believe they sell their breads priced by the ounce or pound. They serve Lamp Lighter coffee and their breads are served at local restaurants. We got some slices at Metzger's that came with their Mette and it was a very flavorful bread. Only problem is that I have to drive there, but maybe this is a good thing since I would end up going all the time otherwise! read more
