Sub Rosa is the closest thing you'll find to the 'local corner bakery in Paris' that you're going to find without having to fly to France. The bakery itself is quaint and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They have a great selection of bread loaves (they change daily) and you can see them going in and out of the oven in the back.You also can't go wrong with the pain au chocolate or the salami and cheese pastry. I've also heard that they have the nicest espresso machine in Richmond. Really great coffee drinks. read more

The chocolate bomb was delicious. All the baked goods look so appetizing. Try coming earlier in the day because they run out of a lot of things so quickly! If you want fresh baked goods come here. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE! The fact that they aren't open on Mondays makes that day of the week even more annoying; however, I totally understand needing to take a day off and don't hold it against you. They have the best lattes in town: so foamy and thick and amazing! Even when I get regular coffee, I'm always satisfied with the perfectly roasted lamplighter blend - sometimes I wish I could get a bigger latte or coffee to go, but the size is still a good one! The most important features of the bakery are top notch- the smell, the service, and of course the pastries are mouth watering. I see room to grow as far as the total variety available at any given day, and the types of drinks it offer. I had a friend that recommended this bakery and I was not disappointed! I went when they opened on a Saturday (early riser). Street Parking was fairly easy but imagine it could be limited during peak times. I had the chocolate croissant right from the over which I thought was the most amazing thing I had ever had until... they kept announcing new batches of things got from the oven. I ended up grabbing a couple other pastries (savory and sweet) to take home and share and they were all unbelievably delicious. This place is worth the trip! read more

This is an incredible bakery. Worth the wait in line. The pastries are all a dream. My favorite is the fig and cheese, but you can't go wrong with any of the classics. The case turns over quickly, so be sure to scan it right before you go to order. The price is indicative of the quality of ingredients and the size of the pastries. The breads are so good. The flatbread's flavor is perfect and the size means you will enjoy it all before it gets stale. Absolutely horrendous treatment. I have a medical condition preventing me from wearing a face covering that has been documented with my primary care physician. This establishment has contactless pickup from a table located at the front entrance. Patrons are required to stand outdoors where there is no governors order or requirement to wear a face covering. I was asked to wear a face covering while I wait, I kindly refused due to being outside on a public sidewalk not owned by Sub Rosa. The gentlemen that asked, was very demanding and refused service (which was fine) and told me he would refund my order. After leaving I called the manager to discuss any possible accommodations as I would like to continue to patronize. Even after explaining a medical issue, and the fact that there were no other customers around or waiting, she continued to repeat "our policy" and "we do not want to make our customers fee;l uncomfortable". She also went on to explain that Saturdays (with this Saturday at 8am being the exception I guess) are very busy with customers waiting. I guess customer comfort only applies to those that do not have medical conditions. Sub Rosa has no right to require a face covering on a public access sidewalk. I was willing to wait in my vehicle, wait around the corner, anything, none of which were satisfactory for Sub Rosa. read more

My daughter brought my husband and I there for Sunday morning breakfast.... a sunny day we sat in front of this rustic bakery and were delighted with their wood oven baked goods. I enjoyed the salami and cheese croissant.... no I mourned my last bite because I was enjoying it so immensely. And this is coming from a vegan! The individual hand crafted baked goods made the experience even more special. Oh and yeah the Turkish tea - a small cup with just the perfect blend! I never had anything like it. Excellent lamination and perfect amount of chocolate in the pain au chocolat. I've only tried the sesame rye, but their breads are beautiful, and they appear to mill their own flours. Coffee from lamplighter was good. Friendly and knowledgeable service in a cozy, bright shop. read more

I found Heaven on Earth on 25th Street this morning and hope to make this a Saturday morning routine. For me, the location of Sub Rosa in Church Hill can't be beat and I enjoyed a stroll around my old neighborhood waiting for the doors to open. My 4 year old son's eyes were immediately drawn to a beautiful fruit and goat cheese croissant, while I HAD to try the salami and cheese and fig and cheese. I know I've never had a better croissant, crispy on the outside with the perfect amount of chew and density on the inside. The combinations they create are balanced and scrumptious and I can't wait to try more...and revisit that salami and cheese!! read more

Partner and I came in here to check out this bakery for the first time about a month and a half ago. Young hipster lady ringing folks up was not very friendly. I would say mildly hostile even. Weird.
