Our move was less than ideal with Suburban Solutions. The team did not arrive with full manpower until 10:30 am. Per the paperwork, our move was scheduled to begin between 9-9:30 am. During the course of the move, we saw our mattress get dragged on the floor through the building. A lot of small hardware got lost in the shuffle from point A to point B. The owner did his best to make up time at our first stop which was appreciated, but ultimately would not use this company in a future move. read more

I had set a cross-DC cross-quadrant move for an unassuming date in December. I ran a bunch of quotes, and honestly, Suburban Solutions was on the high side. I've moved four times in the ten years before this - I have used the cheapest option before and I never once thought that it was perfect. I was always a flat rate mover kind of person before this. Hourly movers have a reputation of taking longer to run up the hill, etc. I even got a flat rate quote from another mover in DC -- this ended up being far cheaper. I was impressed by Brian's responsiveness and professional emails and went with this company. As the day approached, good turned to crap as the weather forecast predicted the first snow of the season. Even worse, the day of, my no parking signs were not respected and the moving truck couldn't park in front of my building for almost an hour. The four movers -- unfortunately I can't remember all their names -- Reggie and maybe Josh were two of them -- these guys were LIGHTNING FAST. Not fazed by the snow or parking, my life was loaded into a truck with surprising alacrity. Brian and another guy stopped by and helped for a bit. The move in was just as smooth. They brought neoprene floor protectors ($15) to make sure my new home's floors weren't wrecked by the nasty slush that had accumulated outside. Everyone asked where different pieces went and everything was moved into its right space. The quote from Brian was VERY conservative - $820-1050 for a four to five hour move. We ended up a little over $600. It was amazing to give a pretty nice tip and not be near the high end of the service only estimate. I would repeat if I had to move again. read more

I used the company for a move from DC to NY and would not recommend. Yes, my items arrived at my location, but one of my tables was damaged beyond repair. Also, I received an invoice at the beginning, but toward the end, Suburban came up with extra charges. In particular, about 3 months after they began storing my items, they told me they had to charge me for two storage units because my items did not fit into one (I lived in a studio apartment...how can that be?). The main office also told me my move was more expensive because my items would be the only ones on the truck, however, when the movers arrived, they disclosed that they had a second customer's items on the truck as well. So after I wrote this review, I received a phone call from Brian, the owner of Suburban, and the gentleman with whom I e-mailed during the quoting process. Speaking very quickly (mind you, while I'm at work...I thought it was my ACTUAL movers calling me!), he accused me of bringing down his Yelp rating and asked me what I could do to raise my four stars to five. And then he threatened to flag my review. AND THEN he e-mailed me offering to personally move me and my belongings for $95/hour. This is not what I want to deal with 12 hours before moving (for the first time!) on a holiday weekend. I thought his behavior was extremely unprofessional, and I was a little frightened he was going to show up at my (old) apartment on Sunday to "personally" move me for free. On the one hand, I admire his dedication to making his business work, but I think he'd save EVERYONE a lot of time and hassle by just offering quality pricing and customer service upfront. I will note that their prices are much more in line with a city-to-city move rather than an in-city small apartment move. That's my fault for not knowing the difference when gathering quotes. Moved my one bedroom apartment from Largo to my friends house in Indian Head, MD without complaint. They beat me to the house (I stopped to get them lunch) and waited for me outside. Suburban Solutions cares, and they proved it. We had some unfortunate damage during a move back in July compounded by an employee of the firm lying both to us and to his boss. When we notified the owners of recently discovered evidence of the lie, we received a letter of apology from the two employees still with the company involved in the move, cash refunds of the tips we gave the crew, AND a check for the ENTIRE cost of the move. I would note that at no time did we ask for or expect anything from the company beyond acknowledgement of the problem. For us it had been sufficient that the mystery had been solved. We were completely blown away by the company's response. There is no better evidence of quality control than this generous gesture on their part. We have had some bad experiences with other movers, and I come from a military family, so I have seen it all. Here are all the excellent things you can expect from Brian and co: 1. We relocated to the Washington, DC area after 29 years of living in a large house in a college town. Our daughter had used Suburban Solutions for a much smaller local move in the DC area, and she recommended them. They lived up to her strong recommendation. 1. Quote: the form for generating a quote is easy to follow, and very complete. Our move involved multiple pick-up and drop-off points. These were all entered in to the quote form by address. Each room's furnishings were summarized. The result was a firm, fixed-price quote. We altered it once when we deleted one of the drop-off locations. Otherwise, the service we received was what was quoted, and at the quoted price. 2. Pick-up: the team arrived a day early (in the evening) and began the packing. They made two trips to the secondary location (a storage facility) and were on the road at the end of the next day. 3. Drop-off: occurred on the appointed day (the team was on the road overnight) and on time. All parking and delivery instructions were followed exactly. Each piece was placed where it belonged and unpacked. The team finished the drop-off by lunchtime. They packed up all the moving materials and left us. The bill was settled by check at that time. We gave them a generous tip. 4. Total cost: the move was reimbursed by my employer, who imposed an allowance on the reimbursement. The total cost of the move was within that allowance, which was based on prevailing rates for the distance and size of the move. You will most likely be very pleased if you use the company for your move. read more

My experience with Suburban was not a nightmare by any means, but given the rave reviews and the price that I paid I expected better. The movers who came did their best and were pretty good, but they had problems that were the fault of the management. Overall it wasn't bad and there are way worse mover stories, but I've had better from other companies that charged less, most notably Khan Movers. First, the company did not provide them with tools. They didn't have a set of wrenches, just an adjustable wrench. Fine if a bolt isn't tight, but if it is then you either can't get it or you will strip the bolt. They also just had crappy tools for the rest of the stuff and no rubber mallet. The company was supposed to provide them with tools and failed to do so. This also cost me time because it takes longer to get things done when you don't have the right tools. Fortunately I was able to dig up a drill that wasn't packed yet and so I did the grill, but everything else moved slowly. I've seen other crews take apart my furniture and they worked much faster. Secondly, the guys were extremely tired and as a result this was slowest moving crew I have seen in my four moves with movers. Again, the problem was management. They were out on a job until 2:30 in the morning, then sent to my house at 9:00 to do a full packing and move. They were exhausted and although they worked hard and did their best, their fatigue showed and definitely cost time. I'm guessing they would have done a better quality job of packing with better rest too. You can't send a crew to this kind of job with this little sleep. This was my first time to get a company to pack for me so I'm not in the best position to judge, but I expected them to do a little better. I think they did well with the breakable stuff and seemed very careful, but I notices other boxes with pots and pans rattled around and with other stuff they threw stuff in bins that were half full. Seems like it should have been more systematic and better packed. Not sure if fatigue affected this, though when I saw how young the crew was (all of them extremely young) I wondered about how good a packing job. All that said, I liked and trusted the guys and appreciated them, and I tipped them for their good efforts. I don't blame these individuals, but the management let me down a little. They should have sent a crew better equipped with tools and most importantly they should have been better rested and not kept out until the early morning on another job the night before. In addition, young guys probably would have been great for carrying stuff, but I think that people with a little more experience may have done a better job of packing (though it was not awful and probably adequate just for storage, but still should be a little more efficient). So if they were the cheapest company I wouldn't have complaints, because nothing really bad happened. But they aren't a cheap company (not super expensive either) so I expected better. I usually pay a crew less per hour and they accomplish more per hour. They need to manage their crews a little better. read more

Short version: meh. I hired Suburban Solutions to unload heavy furniture from a long-distance move (read: piano, plus some other stuff). First meh: it was raining -- not heavy, but drizzly -- and they made no effort to protect my floors. Which, since I went cheap, was not a service I expected, but it would've been nice. As it was an afternoon move, the team that helped me came from a few different other jobs, so they arrived piecemeal. When the first guy arrived, he started in on unloading the trailer, but as a single body, he brought in boxes, not the big stuff I really needed assistance with. Because the boxes came in first, they went out of the way: into the corner & along the wall ... where I wanted the furniture to go. So when additional bodies arrived to handle the furniture, the loveseat and a table wound up stacked in the middle of the room, because where they belong was filled with boxes. Being back in the corner, behind the furniture, things were more difficult to unpack than they should have been -- Suburban Solutions got the job done, but they didn't make my life any easier either. On the upside, once the full team finally arrived, they moved the piano inside without major incident (just one, breathtaking slip). Which is really what I hired them for. So while I wouldn't necessarily recommend them, I wouldn't warn somebody to cancel them either. Just meh *shrug* read more

Best - most relaxing moving experience ever. Was very personalized. They knew I had a nightmare move last time (with another company) and strove to put me at ease. The guys were young and athletic and could move quickly. They were respectful of my stuff. My husband and I moved on December 11th, 2012. We hired Suburban Solutions to move just our furniture and they really exceeded our expectations! We had two bedrooms, a living room and dining rooms worth of furniture. Kevin called the night before to confirm everything and he, Gary and Andre showed up exactly at noon as scheduled and got started right away. There are about a million things I'd rather do than move. I absolutely hate it. So when it comes to moving I always procrastinate. Thank God for these guys... I scheduled my move a few weeks out and then on Sunday night I realized I booked the move for the WRONG day! Ugh. The good news, I called Brian and he acted like it was no big deal and set me up for the following day. Suburban Solutions helped me with a move from an 800' apartment on the 18th floor to a 10x9 storage locker. Brian R and Darnell were simply amazing! They were friendly, fast, and careful with my belongings. Nothing was broken and we were able to move everything in less than the estimated time frame. I really appreciated all the care they took especially with my few "fragile" items, and a few boxes that needed to be placed at the front of my storage locker for easy access. So this is "Move 2" review, if you've seen my Tolstoy post written in April already and don't want all the delicious details, suffice it to say I have now posted 2 5-star reviews of this company and just email Brian (owner) now without reservation. After my move out of my dad's 2br condo went so smoothly, he called to set up HIS move to a new townhouse. He opted for a 4-man crew that came with both a moving truck and a large flat-bed pick-up (for the garage items) which I think only ran him a little more than double my move (and about 3-4 times the amount of stuff). This next statement is in no way a negative reflection on the first crew, but the next group of guys that came were even better than the first! I said several times throughout the day that Brian had impressed me yet again. All 4 movers were professional, personable and genuinely made the move enjoyable. Everything made it safely to the new townhouse without damage, due to careful packing, wrapping and handling. The truck was packed to the brim - PJ's Tetris skills were quite impressive. Neither of us have any plans for more moves in the near future, but when the time comes, this will be my go-to company for myself or any referrals to friends. read more

I've used Suburban Solutions twice in the past and have been blown away by the level of service, from getting the initial quote to the end of the move and transaction. Both times I was impressed by how quickly the movers worked, even though it's a pay-by-the-hour kind of deal, and how affordable it ended up being. During prep for the move, every potentially breakable item was professionally wrapped and transported without any issues. During the second move, my team ran into a bit of traffic (I did as well though) and called to keep me updated on their progress, even took some of the traffic time out of the final quote (which was a surprising touch!) At my final destination, they even asked where things should go instead of just dumping it in the main room--nice touch for someone who might not be able to move it alone. They also helped set up the support for my bed before bringing in the box springs/mattress so nothing was ever resting on the floor. Surburban solutions: an apt name. The 3-man moving crew of Andre, Joshua, and Jeff helped us move from a 2nd floor apartment to a 3 floor house and proved to be a well-oiled moving machine. The trio moved our items with a determined focus, and always asked questions if they had them (something I'd prefer over someone just guessing where something goes). They were amiable and always friendly, never complaining and seemingly having a decent time while conducting hard work. Our items got here in great shape and they made sure they put our belongings in the right rooms or desired areas. They charge by the hour but you certainly get what you pay for and it's all laid out beforehand. We wanted to keep the time spent as low as possible (who wouldn't?) but even though we went over our desired time, which was likely unreasonable due to the amount of stuff we had, by an hour, it wasn't due to any lackadaisical action on their part. Always keeping the time in mind the 3 movers continuously worked with a high efficiency, even coming up with a solution (hah) to circumvent moving heavier items up a flight of stairs (they just handed them up from their truck to the balcony, a simple tactic but effective in saving time and energy). They worked as quickly and safely as can possibly be expected and finished in a good time period. I'd highly recommend using surburban solutions for your moves, and again, a big thanks to Andre, Joshua, and Jeff. Here's hoping you guys get recognized for your hard work. read more

I knew these movers would be solid when I went through the estimate process--you send exactly what you need moved and Brian will give you back an itemized list so that there isn't any confusion about how much you will pay (and possibly pay if you go over/under). The moving crew was here on time (right on the minute, to be exact), and they didn't need any special instructions as they moved in the condo building before (great!). They were all really nice, funny and cordial and asked questions as needed. We trusted them to stay up in our condo to move items while we shuttled things on our own. They were very careful with all of our pieces, wrapping in blankets and plastic very quickly. They are a well oiled machine. We went over our time by several hours and over the estimated items (lots of unexpectedly large items, more walking than anticipated), but the team was still nice and went with it. They only took a 30 minute lunch break and took off the time from the total. Once we got to our new home, moving the pieces into the home was a breeze. All we did was help quicken the process by cutting through any plastic that had blankets to return to them. In the end, we tipped them all because they were so wonderful. A great headache alleviation during your big move, at competitive pricing. Credit cards are accepted...they do it old school via carbon copy! read more

I scheduled an appointment for a move on Sunday afternoon on *Saturday night* after A Few Good College Men Movers showed up so late, I had to cancel the Saturday move. Brian was very communicative and his movers stayed in touch about their whereabouts in the hours preceding the move. They showed up on time, packed efficiently and carefully. The two men were really polite, personable and professional. The equipment they used was nice and our stuff didn't have a single scratch. This was the first move I can think of where I wasn't even exhausted after the movers finished up. Outstanding! We hired Suburban Solutions for our recent move since they were available on fairly short notice, had the best rates we saw, and were very responsive. Brian sent a very detailed estimate and some helpful tips -- we went with the Repax crates they suggested and loved them! On the day of the move, the movers showed up 20 minutes early. They were polite and so careful -- I don't think they ran into a single wall, which is more than what I would have done! They very carefully wrapped up all of our furniture and packed it securely in the truck, and it all made it to our new condo in great condition. They were up front about one small item that got broken (which was totally our fault because we should have packed it, we just left it loose). They were very patient with difficult circumstances -- we had more stuff than we expected, a very small elevator, and the new residents were moving in the same time we were moving out! I normally get so stressed about moving, but these guys made it as stress-free as possible. I spent most of the move sitting on the couch watching them do a great job! By far, this was the easiest move I've ever had. Brian was extremely thorough and knew what questions to ask to make the move as painless as possible. A week before the move, they called to verify as well as the night before to confirm the time. I moved from VA to DC and my move crew consisted of Alan, Purcell, and Lawrence. They were extremely professional and the total move only took 4.5 hours, to include the drive from VA to DC. These guys were quick and my furniture and all my boxes were all intact. Some people said they were pricey, but I think you get what you pay for... And in this case, I got a really good deal all things considered. I will definitely use them again if I move...
