I haven't been to DC in 15 years and so I wasn't sure if the culture requires reservations, therefore I placed one (for 2 pm when it was 1:30 pm). When we walked in we were greeted by the front staff who seemed a little judgmental that made a reservation (they gave each other looks). Nonetheless the service by Devon made up for the front staff experience. He shared some of his favorite items from the menu and explained about the fusion cuisine. We ordered the bacon jam deviled eggs, iced tea, chicken and waffles, and the pimento cheese burger. We were happily full from our meal! My friend who ordered the burger said it was unique and her first time enjoying pimento on a burger. We really loved the interior of the space as well. Came to succotash during happy hour and was not disappointed. Ambiance: much bigger space than I would have expected. Bar seating is a bit limited but there are a good amount of tables and booths across the main and second floor. Service was good. I sat at the bar and the bartenders were able to answer all the questions I had regarding the menu. I went to Succotash with my colleague for a quick bite before my hair appointment. We were greeted at the door and sat in the bar area as it was happy hour. We waited service and after 8 mins, a nice table neighbor told us that we needed to order online using the QR code. We ordered our food and drinks and waited for our order to arrive. My food and drinks arrived first. When my colleagues' drinks came, the waiter asked if anyone else was joining. We informed him it was only the two of us... and he then inform us that we could only order one drink at a time as she ordered two. I told him that the rule was fine, but no one told us that and the system did not give us a warning sign or prohibit us from ordering multiples which is why we ordered in the way we did. The waiter agreed with me that there was no notification regarding the limit. He then told my colleague that he would bring her the additional drink when she was ready. My colleague also informed the waiter that the drink that she had gotten (the Sangria) was not up to par per her usual standard. The waiter see apologized about it, and then said he would talk to the bartender about it. A few moments after, a guy came over to us and stood over our table. He made no introduction, he just asked us how we were doing. My colleague asked, "how can we help you", and he replied, "you tell me", which is when we gathered that he was the manager. My colleague told him about her dismay regarding the drinks and he asked her in a condescending tone if she had ever had one before. She informed him that she was a regular patron at succotash and the sangria was her usual drink. My colleague added that she just expected it to be better. The manager did not apologize for her experience, he nonchalantly attested that the drinks were always made the same and made well. My colleague then said that she didn't know what the issue was tonight but it was definitely not was she was used to, but she didn't want to make a big deal of it. I then said, "well, I would like to add that we were told that we could only get one drink by the waiter in an accusing tone". I told him, that ordering one drink at a time was fine; however, it did not state that in the app, and it would be helpful if they could update the app so that people are not accused of doing the wrong thing. I told him at it was uncomfortable when the waiter brought it to our attention. I then told the manager that the app could be easily corrected because it is a simple coding error and he could recommend the change. When the manager heard me talk about coding and the app, his face literally changed and he seemingly got increasingly upset at what I said, which was very odd. He then told me that it was the law that we order one drink at a time. I then corrected him and said, "Sir, that is not the law" while laughing at his attempt to usurp authority, and then I said, "so please, don't say that to me." The manager then told me that he could say whatever he wanted. I then said, "well listen, I don't have to come back". He then proceeded to say, "Actually, you can leave right now." I was shocked that he would take this attitude. I then said, "Listen, I'm planning to leave anyway because I have a hair appointment in 30 minutes, so you can bring me my bill and a box to take my food." He then said, "You don't have to worry about the bill. You can leave right now we are no longer serving you." I was literally amused at his reaction. Unbelievable. My colleague was very upset and asked why he was as acting like that because I wasn't being rude to him. He then said, "I don't have to be talked to any kind of way", and my colleague said, "she's not being rude, or talking to you any kind of way... all she said was that you can update the app." He then apologized to her and said, "I'm sorry about this, you can stay... but we are no longer serving her". He also offered to comp her bill as well. Mind you... this discussion did not escalate in volume. I was simply talking to him... but he completely overreacted and it was unnecessary. Man, I had high hopes for Succotash Prime, but it fell short. Not sure what was up or if the catfish sandwich is just an item to avoid, but I didn't like my meal all that much. Plus, the prices for what you get is questionable. We visited Succotash Prime for lunch on a weekday, and the place quickly filled. The space itself is beautiful. Located in the Galleria area in D.C., its old building has vault ceilings and prohibition-era style and decor. It's also very large and spacious, so fitting for a group celebration. My biggest complaint of my order, the catfish sandwich was how lacking there was of fish! Because of so, the proportion of the bread, slaw and sauce to the protein was off. I tasted mostly bread, slaw, sauce and even fry on the fish, but not much of the fish itself. The filet was super thin. But get this - when I asked for a side of aioli for my fries, THEY CHARGED AN EXTRA THREE DOLLARS FOR AIOLI. THREE DOLLARS. Like, what? That's such a large fee for just a dipping sauce for fries. Was that indicated somewhere on the menu? It was not vocally explained, so this should be written somewhere that there's an extra charge of THREE DOLLARS for aioli. Fifty cents? Yes. A dollar? Fine. But three dollars is absurd. So what's worse - the lack of fish in the catfish sandwich or the massive additional fee for a dipping sauce? Either way, I sadly won't be returning, especially with how many other awesome restaurants there are nearby. I will say though that the staff was super friendly and service was efficient. I was excited to try Succotash as it's long been on my radar and overdue, and here goes-- I was surprised at the same time underwhelmed with the food! The chicken and waffle, while it looked appetizing on its face set in that nice Toile plate, was overcooked and dry; and worst, no flavor! The catfish sandwich my companion had was also very bland even despite it set with coleslaw. The only redeeming quality it had was the nicely cooked fries. BUT when we asked for Aioli sauce to dip it with since, just like the other orders we had, it was slightly bland, they put it on the bill and charged $3 for the Aioli sauce for the price(hidden charge, waiter never mentioned it was extra!). Obviously, 2 stars would be too punishing so 3 stars was appropriate for ambience --the place definitely was nice, gives off that country club feel in that Southern charm ambience! And the waiter was actually amiable despite not disclosing the upcharge on that dipping sauce for the fries! Still, for price point and quality of the food we had today--this somewhat nicely rated place disappointed me greatly as did my Seattle similarly-discriminating-taste counterpart! In fact, prior to sitting in today, I was inclined to return for the fried oysters on that nice bun BUT if the Chicken and Waffle was any indication of what we can expect of an analogous fare, this will be a one off for me--; thus, not coming back! Came here for a Wednesday happy hour at the upstairs bar. It was pretty crowded but we were able to snag the last table where we could get the HH specials. Also who knew they were a "Steakhouse" I put that in quotes because I dont think they really are I just think they added a couple steak options to justify the $10 sides. Everyone at the table was really impressed by the taste. I ordered a single deviled egg with bacon jam and my table got the hushpuppies to share. The deviled egg was great (although most deviled eggs are) and the hushpuppies, which come with 6, were tasty as well. For happy hour you can either sit at the bar downstairs or in at upstairs bar tables. The decor inside is unique - teetering on the edge of gaudy, but done exactly the right way. We were huge fans of Edward Lee in Culinary Class Wars so of course we had to try Succotash on our anniversary. We would've wanted to try Taste of the South if we were more hungry, but we just ended up just ordering a la carte. Started off with the Fried Green Tomatoes which were delicious and surprisingly my favorite dish. Also got the Popcorn Shrimp, which were a bit underwhelming. It wasn't as crispy as I would've liked, probably because the sauce was on the bottom and made them soggy. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles and got a side of Caulini. The waffles were SO good, but the chicken was lackluster - not bad but not great either. Caulini was wet and mushy. Overall, we had a positive experience dining at Succotash. Our server was fantastic and even treated us to a dessert since it was our anniversary! We got the Chocolate Ganache "Waffle" which was absolutely divine. I came here for dinner before a show at Ford's Theater with high expectations based on the delicious Southern fusion menu. The location is gorgeous and the service is exceptional. There truly isn't a bad place to sit in the entire restaurant. Many things on the menu were delicious! The hush puppies were the star of the show, perfectly fried and sitting atop a delicious creamy and spicy sauce. The Brussels sprouts (seasonal) were fine, although I didn't taste any miso in the honey-miso glaze. For the entrees, I enjoyed the shrimp and grits, although the shrimp needed just another few seconds on the stove to get the perfect consistency. I was surprised by the layers of acidic flavoring in the grits, which was a great surprise! The pimento burger was also very tasty. Vibes vibes vibes. Whether in the main room or the happy hour back lounge, I love the ambiance at Succotash. Brought some visiting family here and they were equally impressed. We came for Friday lunch and it filled up quite nicely with the working crowd. The chicken wings never disappoint and they didn't this time either. I got the salad with roasted acorn squash and grilled shrimp as recommended by the waiter. Any time a restaurant makes a salad with veggies that I don't have to roast myself, I'll try it. And this delivered. The dressing could've used a little more punch or maybe just more seasoning on the dish overall but the components were great and relatively healthy. Succotash came highly recommended among my friends who have been to DC, and it certainly did not disappoint! We came in for Sunday brunch and we're one of the first few people at the restaurant. We were seated and greeted right away. We decided to get drinks to start off the day, after all... when on vacation right? Succotash was a great combination between American classics and southern spices. I had the lobster eggs Benedict, most places just put bits and pieces of lobster but to my surprise there were large chunks of lobster. Although it was a bit spicy for me but it was still delicious and worth every single bite! I will say, my favorite were the thick slices of maple bacon. They say vacation calories don't count, so why not enjoy it on yummy bacon. All in all, we had an incredible experience. Let me tell you, this place was amazing. The food, drinks, and ambiance was so nice. The building is an old bank and the natural light makes everything so bright and open. Our server, Nikkie, was really great. Quick, attentive, and very personable. She made sure we were taken care of and quickly. We couldn't be seated until our whole party was there, which is totally okay, I completely understand that. The front of house could have been nicer when we entered though. The last time I visited this place was in 2018 after I just moved to DC. Drink: I ordered a virgin mocktail given that I had to return back to work. Ummm honey, this drink.....Summer time in Fall! That's how I can best describe it. I had been wanting to try Succotash for some time, mainly because of the cool building. The restaurant is situated inside a remodeled bank. There is an elegant mezzanine and high ceilings. The front of the restaurant has a mural of southern marsh. It's a cool aesthetic. The restaurant serves both southern comfort food and prime steaks (with an Asian-inspired twist). We ended up ordering from mostly the southern menu items. For appetizers, we had the coconut shrimp and the hush puppies. The hush puppies were out-of-this-world amazing! I could have eaten the whole plate of them. The coconut shrimp were also succulent, so the meal started out very strong! For an entrée, I had the grilled trout and broccolini. The fish was tender and flaky. I was very pleased with the meal. I had a side of fries, but I did not like the ketchup sauce because it was mixed with a spicy cocktail sauce flavor. I would have preferred normal ketchup. My husband enjoyed a fresh heirloom tomato salad and a side of Mac and cheese. He said both were very good. We have to say, our server was amazing! I wish I could remember his name, but he was very friendly, energetic and funny. He explained the menu well and checked on us often. He offered menu suggestions, too. There was almost like a floral or lavender type of flavor to it that was off putting. The kimchi and collards were not amazing. I LOVE kimchi and collard separately and I eat collards and cabbage together but the kimchi and collards together, at this spot just were not hitting the spot. The deviled eggs were the best part but they weren't really special either. They seemed to be confused about how to cook steak. Some of the guys asked for medium. We came here on a Friday evening with a party of 4. Ambiance was nice and the decor was very unique. We were seated at a table in the wall and had a nice private area for our group. Onto the food, we had very high expectations given the famous Chef Edward Lee but we were left disappointed, unfortunately. Popcorn Shrimp - tasted decent, pickled fresnos were a great compliment but the shrimp were not too crispy. Hot-Fried Oysters - absolutely fantastic, the bread was soft, flavor was great, and the texture of the oyster complimented each other perfectly. Pimento Cheese Hush Puppies - tasted fine but the cheese was a bit overcooked. Jamie's Cornbread - the cornbread was whatever but the hot honey brown butter was a game changer. Dirty Chicken - the blue cheese overpowered the honey gochujang sauce and the chicken was overcooked. Batter was tough and hard instead of crispy. Slightly disappointed. Crispy Local Blue Catfish - this was the worst fried catfish I've ever eaten. Overcooked and bland. Lettuce slaw was decent but the star of the dish was an absolute disappointment. Apple Cider BBQ Pork Ribs - ribs had a great flavor and the dirty rice was excellent. However, ribs were not tender enough to fall off the bone. Collards, Kimchi & Country Ham - nothing fancy, collard greens were not cut and felt very stringy, which I think were the stems. Hummingbird Cake - not sure if this dessert is supposed to be moist but it wasn't. Flavor was great but it was so dry. Drinks were good and I appreciated the bourbons unique to Succotash. Service was good as well, our waiter was super friendly and the food came rather quickly. The waiter told us Chef Lee is currently working on some new specials, which is super exciting!
