I surprisingly enjoyed Succotash! My sister and I already had plans to stop by an art exhibit and planned to grab food at any available restaurant afterwards. Succotash happened to be the closest spot so we walked in and waited about 10mins before we were seated. We sat upstairs in a darker area which seemed more like a little bar. There was a single restroom nearby. Our server, Leo, really helped make our experience a great one. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and honest with his recommendations. We ordered French 75 to start, they were good and pretty strong. Then we followed up with oysters and shrimp as appetizers. Both were very good and each had a kick to them. The oysters were cooked and present on small pieces of toast. The battered shrimp came out similar to fried calamari. For our entrees, we went with catfish and garlic smashed potatoes, and dirty chicken with old bay macaroni and cheese. The fish was nice but I requested a side of hot sauce for added flavor. Everything was so tasty. The smash ex potatoes were amazing. And dirty chicken had Asian spices and is doubled fried. We ended up adding dessert, going with the banana pudding and hummingbird. Delicious!!! The hummingbird cake was huge and I couldn't eat it all. I'm so happy it all worked out and even happier with the exceptional service Leo gave. I'd definitely recommend this spot. The happy hour here is phenomenal! They have a great selection of food and drink items. The country ham and biscuits were to die for. The biscuits tasted like they were made from scratch. The crispy Korean cauliflower was so good as well. The portion sizes were large enough to share with two people. I got 4 happy hour glasses of wine and two happy hour food items for $36! The ambiance was very relaxing. The lights were dim and the music wasn't too loud. If you want a table, I would definitely make a reservation. The bar gets crowded pretty fast too. Came here with a party of 4, friends from out of town. We were able to get reservations and it's conveniently located off the metro stop. We decided to the taste of the south and it did not disappoint. This selection came with many different items and if you decide to order this, it does take time. The tasting menu and its portions were thoughtfully crafted and we were able to try every dish without feeling hungry or without too much extra. Each item was so good and I would eat any of them again. My favorite was the Kim chee collard greens. The collard greens were cooked well without being mushy, like how I sometimes get them, and they had a nice Kim chee kick. The chicken and waffle was another one I enjoyed. The chicken was so good and the waffle also was golden and had a crunchy, not soggy waffle. If you're hungry and the items on the tasting menu are interesting, then I would recommend it! Arrived at Succotash as a Valentine's Day surprise, my husband decided we should start trying new places especially after we watched a culinary show with Chef Edward Lee. Upon arrival the restaurant is within a building with two large doors with I believe corn shaped handles. Upon entrance it has a nice dim lit ambiance with tables set up on two floors. The second floor overlooks the first. There was an available Valentine's Day menu to enjoy in its entirety or a la carte. There were options on the traditional menu to do a tasting of a few menu items - the taste of the south. I decided on the Valentine's Day menu lamb option my husband ordered ribs. Comparing both our meals the lamb was definitely more flavorful while the ribs and dirty rice felt they were missing something not quite hitting the mark on expected flavor profiles, although they did look visually appealing and were very tender. We did also try the deviled eggs with bacon jam, which was enjoyable with a nice piece of bacon paired under with jam beneath the whipped deviled egg yolk. As well as the fried oysters which we were informed had a kick but we also enjoyed. Service was great, our waiter informed us of menu items they enjoyed, drinks we might consider and ways to explore the menu from his experience. Easily one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. I had some very high end restaurants even Michelin Star, and numerous other very high end notable places. Being born and raised in the south and loving a good meal this was more than just fantastic, I would consider it a destination point for consideration of returning to DC to include this as a reason. We ordered the taste of the south sampling meal so we got to try everything. The smoked wings were fantastic and the sauce was phenomenal. I love dipping sauces. The corn bread was the best I've ever had. Moist and flavorful. The deviled eggs were surprisingly great. The fried green tomato salad was a standout surprise absolutely fantastic. Very fresh and flavorful. The sides were Mac n cheese, and collards. Again amazing all around! creamy and lots of cheese. Savory and large fresh greens. The main was chicken and waffles, steak, shrimp and grits. All fantastic. This is getting long but all 3 mains were just as good as anything else. Tender chicken, fresh waffles, perfect temp steak, popping shrimp n grits. Desert had the only thing I could pass on. The pecan pie was just a small taste round type and was just ok, maybe a full slice would be better. The humming bird cake was great. The vanilla ice cream was fantastic. I had the hey peaches drink as well that was refreshing and heavy poured. Easy 9.8/10 verging on 9.9. I would come here all the time if we lived here. The flavors and taste were so well executed it's hard to explain it all. Our server was Briyan and he complemented the meal and experience and was extremely helpful and pleasant. It's really only in a couple of the side-dishes. It's a fusion restaurant, right? We did the taste of the South tasting menu to mark our wedding anniversary. It was great! You get everything listed and it's plenty of food for 2 people. Food: Awesome and really flavorful, very nicely presented and portioned. Highlights were the cornbread, Shrimp N Grits, side succotash, chicken and waffles, and the Fried Green Tomato salad. I also liked the sliced ribeye, although it was a just a smidge chewier than preferred. Also, I feel like there could've been another veg on the plate or bigger rammekin of the sauce. I reserved an early morning slot, thinking their Sunday brunch would draw in tons of customers, but to my surprise it didn't crowd nearly as much as I expected. However, there was a good number of diners present by the time I departed the restaurant. The food was delicious. I enjoyed all of the food items I ordered. The food quality is a mix of authentic southern comfort and modern influence. The dining room has an 1900s architecture with beautiful decor and comfortable seating. We tried the Taste of the South menu for 2 for $60/person. It came with a large amount of food, in fact, every item listed in that section! (Was expecting to choose from 1 item per category). The highlights of the meal were the cornbread, smoked chicken wings, smoked ribeye, and smashed potatoes. I would 100% come back to order those again. We were particular impressed with the wings and ribeye. The wings had an excellent smoky flavor to them that really highlighted the natural taste of the chicken and the ribeye was very high quality meat. The smashed potatoes looked like a potato salad but were not, and were closer to a traditional mashed potatoes which larger potato chunks and skin. Services was attentive and professional, and efficient at removing our finished plates after we were done eating, since the food came out in rounds (appetizer, entrees and sides, then dessert). Succotash brings a fun Southern-New Orleans French Quarter vibe right to the heart of downtown DC. It's a great spot for groups -- lively atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu full of flavorful dishes. We started with the cornbread and cauliflower appetizers, and both were hits. The cornbread was especially good -- warm, buttery, and just the right touch of sweetness. We liked it so much we ordered an extra serving to go though the serving size was only really good for two. The cauliflower we could split four ways. I had the trout sandwich, which had a nicely cooked piece of fish. The flavor was great, but the bread-to-filling ratio was a bit off -- found myself with more bread than fish and sauce by the end. My family and I died here on a recent trip to Washington DC. I made reservations for brunch because I saw that they had a Kentucky hot brown on the menu for brunch and I loved the Kentucky hot brown! We are big top Chef fans and therefore know chef Edward Lee. We are also both native Kentuckians and so he has quite the reputation in that state and we were excited to try this restaurant. We were lucky to catch the end of restaurant week and I was able to get a restaurant week three course menu for a very reasonable $35. I started with the corn fritters which were kind of like corn nuggets, but they were really good and extra fancy. For my entrée, I had the hot brown and I would describe this as a deconstructed hot brown. The bacon was on the top/side of the plate and the tomatoes were on top as well. They were sliced cherry tomatoes instead of a big slice of a traditional tomato like I'm used to. The morning sauce was flavorful and excellent. The turkey was thick cut. The bacon was a little overdone for my taste, but I liked that it was thick and candied. Overall, I really liked the dish. For dessert I had an apple cake which was really good and it was a small portion that just gave that perfect amount of sweetness. I did not care for the pineapple cheesecake sorbet that came on top of it. I did not think that flavor combination worked. I actually preferred my son's vanilla ice cream with it. My son had the kids grilled cheese and french fries, which came with a bowl of vanilla ice cream at the end. he really enjoyed the french fries but thought the bread for the grilled cheese was a little too thick. He thought about getting the kids mac & cheese, but it didn't come with anything and he was worried. He wouldn't like it because he's very picky about his mac & cheese. My husband had the shrimp and grits which was similar to a shrimp étouffée and he thought it was very delicious and flavorful. However, I think his favorite thing was the dessert which was the chocolate waffle with old Bay marshmallow and fruit. We were very intrigued by the idea of old Bay marshmallow, but it really worked. The restaurant itself is very beautiful. Our service was ok. I had to ask for ice and sweetener for my iced tea multiple times. This is not the end of the world but I would think a restaurant headed by a southern chef that serves southern food wouldn't have such trouble with iced tea. read more

During our visit to DC, we decided to get brunch around our hotel, and Succotash showed up as one of the most popular places to go to. We managed to get brunch reservations for a Sunday morning, and were welcomed by a very friendly staff who accommodated our request to get us seated in a booth with our little one. Kayla, our waitress was very kind and friendly and chatted with our little one and kept him entertained! They have a good selection of beer, and their cocktails were good too. Their Bloody Mary (Southern Bloody) was very tasty, and their pickled Okra offered a great flavor punch. Whiskey lovers should definitely try their Whiskey Sour or Nuts about Nana. We ordered from their Culinary Class Wars menu, the KY Fried Tofu ($15) which was very tasty and got the Delta Rice Bowl ($19) and Shrimp 'N' Grits ($24.75) for our mains. We decided to try the "Taste the South" experience -- $60 per person -- which includes a full lineup of dishes. Appetizers: Pickled green tomato deviled eggs, smoked chicken wings, fried green tomato salad, and cornbread. Entrées: Smoked & sliced ribeye, chicken & waffles, and shrimp 'n' grits. Sides: Mac 'n' cheese and tater tots. Dessert: Chocolate bourbon pecan pie and hummingbird truffle cake. The food overall was decent, but for the price and portion sizes, it didn't quite hit the mark. The standouts of the night were the smoked wings, the ribeye, and the mac 'n' cheese. The ribeye was tender and flavorful, sliced thin and perfectly cooked -- I just wish there had been more of it. If you come here hungry and plan to share the "Taste the South" meal, be prepared to leave still feeling a bit hungry, especially if you don't eat every dish they bring out. That said, the service was outstanding -- our server was attentive, friendly, and made the experience feel special. For $450 (group of 5), I was expecting more. Most of the dishes were not up to par with their price tag. Our waiter highlighted that this restaurant is known for bourbon and recommended a few bourbon drinks. We tried the old fashioned and the Manhattan. Both were delicious even coming from non-bourbon drinkers. For appetizers we tried the deviled eggs, crab and kimchi dip (from their holiday menu), and the fried green tomato salad. Deviled eggs: The eggs were great! Very creamy. The bacon flavored egg was our favorite of the two. Crab dip:The crab dip was almost really good. It was cheesy with a lot of crab. Only a hint of kimchi. For $28 I really wanted this to be great but it was only okay. The bread was a little too soft/floppy. It didn't hold the dip that well. Fried green tomato salad: the tomatoes were well seasoned but not a stand out dish. Tomahawk steak: We requested medium rare but the meat came out more on the rare side. Also the cuts were very inconsistent- some were super thick while other were thin. For $145, this dish should have been at least cooked right. On the bright side, the meat tasted amazing. Also the sauces that came with it were very good (blue cheese furikake, horseradish cream, and peppercorn caper) Catfish: probably the most disappointing of every dish we got. The picture speaks for itself. I could have made better catfish Dirty chicken: this was the saving grace of the meal. Very similar to Korean fried chicken. Very balanced, sweet, spicy, savory Collards and kalettes: these were fine. Not very memorable. The collards weren't cut up and we're super large which was a little difficult to eat. There was supposed to be kimchi in the collards but I couldn't tell at all. I would maybe recommend trying different sides. These were both just okay. Overall at this price point, "just good" isn't going to cut it. This needed to be great and it wasn't. We came for lunch on a weekend and I'm not sure if they were just off their game this day or if it's always like this. We saw chef Edward Lee on the Korean Netflix show and wanted to support his DC restaurants. We ordered an appetizer, two side dishes, and two mains, but everything came all at once and surprisingly fast. Fast as in it may have just been sitting and waiting there. Deviled eggs with pickled green tomato: - this was the best dish we had here. The green tomato was at the bottom of the eggs and added a really nice texture and flavor to traditional deviled eggs Biscuits and gravy: - this dish was so salty it was almost inedible. My husband had to force himself to eat one biscuit. Fried chicken sandwich: - the chicken was cooked to perfection, but lacked in flavor. The pimento cheese overpowered the sandwich, so I took it off, but the crispy chicken coating only tasted like salt and pepper. Ironically the fries that came with the dish had no salt on them so we dipped them into the biscuits and gravy dish. Pecan sticky bun: - this was so disappointing, because it's just so easy to make it good. It must have been sitting under a heater because it was as hard as a rock. The flavor was ok, but not as good as cinnabon, which is kind of sad. Succotash: - we enjoyed this side dish and besides the appetizer it's the only thing we could finish. It had a lot of vegetables and a nice slight curry flavor. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were nice, but I think they were training new people because they weren't very attentive to anyone at the bar. The restaurant decor was nice and had the vibe of an expensive restaurant and also the prices for it, but I'm not sure I'll be coming back. The ribeye was also excellent, and the bourbon sauce was . Fried oysters = DELISH. Mac n cheese = a must-order. Deviled eggs tasted like, well, deviled eggs, but very creamy with good flavor. My dad was into the kimchi crab dip (I just wish the toast it came with was warmer/crispier, it was a little cold by the time I ate it). The only real miss was the collard greens. Since they were mixed with kimchi, they ended up way too salty and not the flavor I was craving, we couldn't finish them. But overall? Pretty dang good! After watching that cooking show on Netflix, the lady and I concluded we HAD to come to Chef Edward Lee's restaurant. I must say the food didn't disappoint. We made reservations prior to coming here and I highly recommend you do that. It was really busy when we arrived so much so that even with our reservation we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Aside from that our the service here was amazing. Our waitress so awesome. She answered each of our million questions, explained the menu, offered helpful input, and just made sure we were taken care of overall. The food was absolutely phenomenal. Firstly, for food, we ordered a number of items from the deviled eggs, to the gochujang butter steak, chicken and waffles, the hush puppies, as well as the Kentucky fried tofu. The deviled eggs were great, super solid deviled eggs that the whole family enjoyed. Solid 8/10. The Gochujang Butter steak was excellent, probably the best main dish we ordered. Definitely a must get if you're visiting. 10/10 The Hush Puppies and Chicken and Waffles were both fine, but couldn't really live up to the Gochuhang Butter Steak. 7/10. The Kentucky Fried Chicken was also alright, while it was very interesting how the tofu texture was similar to chicken, I felt it was lacking in flavor overall. 6/10. Food wise, everything was decent to great, but the service was definitely lacking. It was lunch time and the restaurant wasn't exactly packed, but we had two sides that never came out until we asked again, and the wait staff seemed stretched a bit thin. We came here for a dinner before a conference with a large group. The top floor was rented out, the restaurant itself is very beautiful and was a great place for a large group. The food was family style which makes it hard to judge because when cooking for larger groups some food can be sitting out a bit before brought to the table. In any city, I don't expect to find terrific local restaurants near the convention center and the NBA arena. But Succotash Prime fits the bill. We showed up at 5:30 on a Sunday without a reservation, but the staff worked to find us seats at the bar. All the staff was knowledgeable and efficient. I could not decide if I preferred the deviled eggs with pickled green tomato or with bacon jam. I was just glad I got some of each. Jamie's cornbread with hot honey had just the right sweetness. The apple cider pork ribs were tangy and toothsome. Don't skip the decadent mini chocolate bourbon pecan pie, rightly served warm. We devoured it before we remembered to take a picture. The one thing that was weird was that the ribs were supposed to come with dirty rice, which we were excited about. Such a beautiful place. I was astonished by the interior and the atmosphere. The booth seating made it feel even more special, and the service was delicate and thoughtful. Our server even replaced the utensils for every course. We ordered a course called 'Taste the South,' which was very well-priced, and every dish was delicious with an interesting twist. Couldn't decide on what to get so my friend and I ordered "Taste the South." It is a prefix menu and shared family style. The food can be best described as the south merging with korean influence. First time trying this flavor profile. It was pretty good. The restaurant was beautiful and ambiance was nice. Overall had a good time. The food and service at Succotash were top tier. The waiter was super friendly and a manager came to check up on us to make make sure we had a great time. The building is also beautiful, making for a wonderful dining experience. My parents and I ordered the Taste the South menu and it came with so much food! Loved being able to try everything. We especially liked the wings, fried green tomato salad, corn bread, steak, mac and cheese, and shrimp and grits. The steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was juicy. The wings had a good amount of flavor and were not dry. The only dish that was a little blacklist was the chicken and waffles. Maybe it was because we were already so full from the other parts of the meal, but nothing stood out as special about the fried chicken and waffles dish. Overall, it was a great dinner to celebrate my mom's birthday. Definitely come if you like southern food and great service. read more
