I was touched inappropriately in the restaurant while sitting at the bar. This was told to the management (an older blonde woman) and I asked to move tables. The management did not remove the other person from the establishment but rather just told me that she talked to them and kept giving me excuses. I did not feel comfortable at all after this happened and wanted to leave. I did not even want to eat my food. I explained to her that the situation was not okay and I was feeling uncomfortable and the same older blonde women just kept feed us excuses. Visiting from CA(don't hold that against me..lol) for work and Yelp'ed S&R. We went in on a Monday night the place was hopping. Loved the vide and chill atmosphere. We were greeted at the hostess stand, by the owner Brian. Great guy, friendly and very engaging. You can tell his passion for the place. When talking with Brian, we learned a little about him and his Louisiana roots, which helped him with the whole S&R concept and menu decisions. Our server, Kam, was phenomenal. She was very attentive, extremely friendly and helpful explaining the menu. The food was fantastic. I had never had grits so BRIAN suggested I try their grits. They have a red creole sauce on the top. They were awesome. Never knew what I was missing with grits. We also had coconut shrimp, crab cakes, steak tacos, fried green tomatoes and bread pudding . All of the food was delicious. It was so good, we brought six people with us the following evening . If you're in Galveston, you have to try this place out. You will not be disappointed. I came here during a girls trip in Galveston after being referred by a couple people, so I was really excited to go but sadly our experience with service and the food left much to be desired. As we walked in the place has a cute esthetic but once the hostess handed us off to our server we knew it would be an interesting meal based on their interaction and whispers from other servers. Our server was pretty short with us and service was slow. Once our drinks and food finally came out, most of us had issues with our orders. I got the shrimp basket and upon its arrival the fries were soggy and greasy. I asked the server about it and she seemed annoyed making it sound like fries usually came out like that. I asked if I could have some fresh fries but I'm pretty sure she just left and then came back with the same fries because they didn't look any different. I have been to Sugar and Rye many times and always have had a pleasant experience. However, our experience on Sunday turned sour due to the unprofessional and very rude manager. We were a large party of 11 there for Mother's Day. One person of our group ordered the Orleans Pasta and requested no onions or peppers. The waiter took note of this. The food came out in a timely manner, but the Orleans Pasta did not come out with everything else. The waiter told us that the dish was "given to someone else". When the replacement dish came out it was basically a fettuccine Alfredo with chicken dish. The waiter explained that the kitchen could not remove the peppers and onions from the Orleans pasta, so instead of asking if he would like something different they just served him a different dish all together. Because of the delay, most of our party was almost finish so he ate the dish as is. We did not receive any acknowledgment of either error from management which was odd. When the checks came, he asked the waiter to make sure that he was charged for the dish he actually received and not the dish he ordered as there was a price difference. The waiter called the manager over and she was incredibly rude. We were not asking them to remove the dish from the bill, but to be charged for what was actually received. The manager rolled her eyes many times and scoffed to just comp the dish. A few minutes later after all of the checks were closed out, the waiter came back out and said the manager insisted he be charged for the automatic gratuity on the amount of the original dish ($5 per the waiter). We frustratingly paid the additional $5. All in all our tab was $700+ The waiter, who told us at the beginning of the meal that he was new, was very nice and patient during all of this. The whole issue could have been avoided if the manager acted like a manager and had these conversations directly with the table instead of forcing the waiter to be the messenger. Her attitude towards us was incredibly unprofessional and rude. When I mentioned something to her about asking for additional money after closing the tabs as we left she insisted the dish was comped, which was never what we asked for. I told her that the waiter said she herself was the one asking for additional money. As I said previously, I have been many times and always had a great experience. After reading other reviews it seems there have been other issues with this same manager. While we are not "regular" customers as we do not live on the island full time, we do have a residence here and are repeat customers. At this time I don't think I will be returning anytime soon, which is unfortunate considering how much we have enjoyed this restaurant in the past. Adding that all of the food was delicious as always. We were just very disappointed at the handling of the situation by management. read more

We've been here a few times since it opened earlier this year. Each time I get a mixed experience. The bartenders are great, but the kitchen execution varies. For example, the shrimp Crevette tonight was excellent. Shrimp was grilled perfectly and the sauce was sublime. Glad there was bread to sop up the sauce! On the other hand, The Snapper on the half shell was overcooked and dry. The rice was barely room temperature and the asparagus was soggy. The seasoning wasn't bad but for $40, it was so disappointing. My shrimp tacos were ok. The tempura batter was pretty thick but at least it wasn't over cooked. All in all, we will probably go back, but maybe just for apps and drinks at happy hour. They just need to keep working on consistency in the kitchen. read more

May 2, 2023 Took friends from out of town/state here (which was the old M & M's and Prohibition Reds location) Owners are Emily and Brian Root who also own an interior design firm, "the white house" Airbnb and the oleander hotel. They have a great selection of bourbons and just got absinthe (can't miss it, sits in this cool dispenser on the bar) so, of course we had Nick Frias (one of the bartenders) make us a sazerac shot; it was smooth He made it the more traditional way, which you muddle the sugar (not light it on fire) put absinthe in the glass but, then poured it out (just want a subtle taste of the absinthe) and it was really smooth. Bravo, Nick! They had a guy playing the piano and he was awesome, very relaxing music We tried the fried green tomatoes - lightly fried which was perfect (cornbread was dry) and the pizza (good but not memorable) The Blanton's bourbon bottle caught my eye because (at the bar where we sat) it had this curved wooden stand next to it and I asked about it. COOL STORY Blanton's Kentucky Bourbon -small batched -date-time-barrell-bottle number, etc- all of that is on the label Each Derby horse "corked" top has a different letter (enlarge it to see it on the bottom left) that put together will eventually, spell out, "Blanton's!" Arriving it looks like a cute spot. Our utensils were not clean that was the first ick. Order the bread pudding French toast and bacon. The French toast was Lukewarm and so was the bacon. Very disappointing! If your bread pudding French toast is pre made how does it come out lukewarm all you have to do is crisp it up! The person with me order a wrap. This was our third time visiting this restaurant. In 2025 it was recommended to us by the place we were staying at prior to our cruise.It was so good we went back for 2 nights, This year, on Feb 13; we arrived again pre cruise, The woman at the front door was lovely and accommodating, I needed to charge my cell phone and she really helped me out. We sat at the bar and there were 3 bartenders and not one of them acknowledged us. My husband had 3 drinks, I had 2; and we had to ask for each drink. Not one bartender asked us if we wanted another, even when the glasses sat empty. Two women came in and sat beside us, immediately they were served with ice water and drinks. We were completely ignored the entire time. When I finally got a hold of a bartender to order food, he seemed annoyed and glanced at his watch, it was 9:15 When my Cobb salad came that I ordered with a chicken breast on top, the chicken was extremely tough, The lettuce was warm and wilted as if it had been sitting out. My husband ordered a chicken entree and it was very tough as well. Not once during the meal were we asked if everything was okay, our water was empty as well. While we are eating the female bartender is spraying Lysol on the bar mats and cleaning them about 10 inches from our meal plates. The only verbal conversation we had was when the annoyed bartender said,,,,,,,,would you like the bill??? He certainly stood there while we paid. Unfortunately we will never go back and we often travel thru Galveston. So, no I would not recommend this restaurant. The restaurant is very cute, with art deco vibes and immediately we were greeted with friendly hellos upon entering. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The food was delicious, highly recommend the fried green tomatoes. The cornbread was flavorful and moist. The grits were so delicious and the sauce almost had a allá vodka vibe. Then we had the wedge salad and it was great - the pickled pears on top were out of this world!! Pairs great w the blue cheese and salad!! Lastly the main dishes...the ribeye steak was OUTSTANDING AND YOU CAN TELL THE QUALITY!! I ordered the brisket skillet which was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Definitely recommend trying! Also to drink, I ordered the lavender espresso martini, which I was a bit hesitant about, but what's not to like about an espresso martini? Excellent dinner at this new place in town. They start you with some pimento cheese and crackers, and although I don't normally like pimento cheese, it was a nice bite to start off with. The space is an old building that's been renovated very nicely. Hats off to the owners for creating a classy looking space. I ordered one of their signature cocktails, "Take Me to Church...Street" which has smoked cherry simple syrup and is delicious. My husband had the "A Little Nutty" which is amaretto-based and was very good as well. My friends and I decided to reserve a spot here after our final exam and to do a quick Secret Santa gift exchange/late birthday brunch. I've heard really good things about Sugar and Rye so I had pretty high expectations that were not met. The food (I got the avocado toast) and the ambiance of the place were great. It's a good spot for aesthetic pictures and the decorations were really festive and cute. I came a little late past our reservation time, but my friend who was the first person to arrive told us that two separate people commented that they weren't sure if our party would be coming. Apparently we were supposed to separately email the restaurant to confirm our reservation, but nowhere in the initial reservation was this made clear, and I don't believe this is standard practice. Our group was pretty big, about 10 people, so I can understand if the staff is a little frustrated or overwhelmed with the logistics of taking orders/payments from such a big group, and I tried to be apologetic and make things easier as much as possible. Our waitress was polite at first when taking our orders, but when we asked for separate checks, she rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything. Had lunch here yesterday with a friend. The restaurant is so quaint and decorated beautifully. I love the peonies on each tape. Favorite flower! I had the fried tomato BLT with the brisket onion soup. Both were absolutely delicious. She had a brisket onion soup with the classic salad. She really enjoyed hers also. The price for this lunch special was excellent and the serving size was perfect also. They had several other lunch specials that looked really good and next time I go, I tend to try the prime rib sandwich. Our service was tiptop. We will definitely return! read more
