A very cute and aesthetic brunch spot in Galveston! It's a small location but there is outdoor seating, and parking is always a bit difficult and limited in the Strand. Overall, the food items are presented nicely, but in my opinion the food is nothing particularly special or different as a food item to order in a restaurant. However, I did order only the Avocado Toast and maybe I should have considered ordering something different and more special or popular from the restaurant to fully gauge the quality of the dishes compared to their prices. The servers were friendly and attentive to us, and everyone is dressed nicely to fit the pink aesthetic of this restaurant. I went in Christmas Eve near closing time and was nevertheless greeted with warmth and hospitality. I mentioned I really only wanted dessert, and they accepted me still. I was sat outside on the patio and given fresh, crisp water to sip on until my food arrived. The aesthetic and atmosphere of Sugar + Rye was unlike anything I've seen on the island so far: a well-lit, well-decorated Cajun restaurant that was brightly painted and yet pleasing to the eyes. I ordered the beignets and a glass of Texas Straight Bourbon on the rocks. I had never had a beignet before and I am proud to sad to say I probably never will again, as I believe I have found probably the best beignet on the island if not in the whole of the state. This brunch has one of my favorite ambiances on the island because of how colorful and bright it is with all the natural lighting and the leafy wallpaper. I thought everything from the plates to the tables to the glasses were super cute for a girls brunch, and the service was wonderful. Our waitress had great recommendations for us, and she was very kind. I ordered the smokin skillet, which had an egg, potatoes, and meat to top it off, and while it tasted good, I would've liked more sauce or something to complement the heaviness of the potatoes and meat. Either a different kind of carb or some greens to help balance the meal out would've been beneficial. It had a nice outside covered outside seating. It looks to be an old house that they turned into a restaurant, which is cool. Service - there was so much staff standing around, but the service was very slow. One of us got our food the crab cake, super late, when we were almost done eating. The server apologized but didn't offer anything else to rectify it. They were all pretty young, so I am going to blame it on being 18 or younger, and not knowing how to solidify customer experience. Food- I ordered the hot shrimp and Cesar salad as my meal. The salad was good, well dressed. The hot shrimp was not Nashville hot as described on the menu, just had seasonings, but shrimp was plump and fresh. I tried some of the crab cake, it was good. The crab cake sandwich looked ok, I think it was fine. The ceviche was not good at all, very dry not wet at all, not seasoned and no other seafood besides crab, and the ratio of chips versus the ceviche was way off. Had such a great experience at Sugar and Rye in downtown Galveston! The atmosphere is super cute, especially with the outdoor seating--perfect for enjoying the coastal vibe. We ordered the crawfish étouffée and the prime rib sandwich, and both were absolutely delicious. The flavors were spot on, and everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. This is a quaint restaurant/bar with a dozen tables inside and another dozen outside. They do not have a parking lot, street parking only (2 hr limit). Once you get seated at the bar or a table you'll be handed an impressive cocktail and drink menu complete with a few Texas craft beers. We were handed two glasses of warm tap water, which we asked to be dumped out. We were then given a cold bottle of water, but even that needed ice and a wedge of lemon. We noticed that even with less than 20 people in this place, it gets quite loud. We decided on the seared tuna salad and the prime rib sandwich. The seared tuna salad comes with sliced tuna that is cooked on the rare side. I liked the prime rib sandwich, although I did have to pick through a little fat and gristle, otherwise it was great served on crusty bread. We decided on the sheet cake for dessert which was actually better than it sounded, although it was overly sweet. I like the fact that they drop the bill off at the table which gives you plenty of time to contemplate the tip. Despite some minor issues, they do a lot right here, which would have us coming back. Our party (15 or less people) tried calling and making a reservation the previous night for brunch the next day and were told that all reservations were booked, but that we could just show up and if they had room they would work us in, so that's what we did we got there as soon as they opened and low and behold, there was one table that had people sitting at it. The brunch manager asked if we had a reservation, we told her no, and very rudely and clearly displayed an annoyed face And acted like we were causing her an inconvenience. The brunch food was awful and made me sick the remainder of the day (I got eggs and bacon). I was not the only person in my party that got sick from the food either. Our party was then TOLD that we would have to put the bill on 1/2 peoples cards and then each person would have to figure out how much their meals/drinks and send their money to whoever paid the total bill.
